Matching polytopes, toric geometry, and the non-negative part of the Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we use toric geometry to investigate the topology of the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian (Gr_{kn})_{\geq 0}. This is a cell complex whose cells Delta_G can be parameterized in terms of the combinatorics of plane-bipartite graphs G. To each cell Delta_G we associate a certain polytope P(G). The polytopes P(G) are analogous to the well-known Birkhoff polytopes, and we describe their face lattices in terms of matchings and unions of matchings of G. We also demonstrate a close connection between the polytopes P(G) and matroid polytopes. We then use the data of P(G) to define an associated toric variety X_G. We use our technology to prove that the cell decomposition of (Gr_{kn})_{\geq 0} is a CW complex, and furthermore, that the Euler characteristic of the closure of each cell of (Gr_{kn})_{\geq 0} is 1.

The asymptotic volume of the Birkhoff polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let m,n be positive integers. Define T(m,n) to be the transportation polytope consisting of the m x n non-negative real matrices whose rows each sum to 1 and whose columns each sum to m/n. The special case B(n)=T(n,n) is the much-studied Birkhoff-von Neumann polytope of doubly-stochastic matrices. Using a recent asymptotic enumeration of non-negative integer matrices (Canfield and McKay, 2007), we determine the asymptotic volume of T(m,n) as n goes to infinity, with m=m(n) such that m/n neither decreases nor increases too quickly. In particular, we give an asymptotic formula for the volume of B(n).

A Generating Function for all Semi-Magic Squares and the Volume of the Birkhoff Polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a multivariate generating function for all n x n nonnegative integral matrices with all row and column sums equal to a positive integer t, the so called semi-magic squares. As a consequence we obtain formulas for all coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of the polytope B_n of n x n doubly-stochastic matrices, also known as the Birkhoff polytope. In particular we derive formulas for the volumes of B_n and any of its faces.

Groebner Bases for Transportation Polytopes

The toric ideals of $3\times 3$ transportation polytopes $T$ are quadratically generated. The only exception is the Birkhoff polytope $B_3$. If $T$ is not a multiple of $B_3$, these ideals even have squarefree quadratic initial ideals. This class contains all smooth $3 \times 3$ transportation polytopes.

Algebraic Combinatorics of Magic Squares
We describe how to construct and enumerate Magic squares, Franklin squares, Magic cubes, and Magic graphs as lattice points inside polyhedral cones using techniques from Algebraic Combinatorics. The main tools of our methods are the Hilbert Poincare series to enumerate lattice points and the Hilbert bases to generate lattice points. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs, and give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.

Magic graphs and the faces of the Birkhoff polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
Magic labelings of graphs are studied in great detail by Stanley and Stewart. In this article, we construct and enumerate magic labelings of graphs using Hilbert bases of polyhedral cones and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of polytopes. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs. We give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.

The volume of the 10th Birkhoff polytope
The n'th Birkhoff polytope $B_n$ is the set of all doubly stochastic $n \times n$ matrices, that is, those matrices with nonnegative real coefficients in which every row and column sums to one. A long-standing open problem is the determination of the relative volume of $B_n$. In [arXiv:math.CO/0202267] we introduced a method of calculating this volume and used it to compute $\vol B_9$. This note is an update on our progress: with the same program (but much longer computing time), we have now derived $\vol B_{10}$.

The Ehrhart polynomial of the Birkhoff polytope
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 30, no. 4 (2003), 623-637 • View PublicationBIB
The n'th Birkhoff polytope is the set of all doubly stochastic n-by-n matrices, that is, those matrices with nonnegative real coefficients in which every row and column sums to one. A wide open problem concerns the volumes of these polytopes, which have been known for n up to 8. We present a new, complex-analytic way to compute the Ehrhart polynomial of the Birkhoff polytope, that is, the function counting the integer points in the dilated polytope. One reason to be interested in this counting function is that the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial is--up to a trivial factor--the volume of the polytope. We implemented our methods in form of a computer program, which yielded the Ehrhart polynomial (and hence the volume) of the ninth Birkhoff polytope.
