On the local genus distribution of graph embeddings
Published in J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput. 101 (2017), pp. 157-173 • Search Publication
The $2$-cell embeddings of graphs on closed surfaces have been widely studied. It is well known that ($2$-cell) embedding a given graph $G$ on a closed orientable surface is equivalent to cyclically ordering the edges incident to each vertex of $G$. In this paper, we study the following problem: given a genus $g$ embedding $ε$ of the graph $G$ and a vertex of $G$, how many different ways of reembedding the vertex such that the resulting embedding $ε'$ is of genus $g+Δg$? We give formulas to compute this quantity and the local minimal genus achieved by reembedding. In the process we obtain miscellaneous results. In particular, if there exists a one-face embedding of $G$, then the probability of a random embedding of $G$ to be one-face is at least $\prod_{ν\in V(G)}\frac{2}{deg(ν)+2}$, where $deg(ν)$ denotes the vertex degree of $ν$. Furthermore we obtain an easy-to-check necessary condition for a given embedding of $G$ to be an embedding of minimum genus.

Generating maps on surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe procedures for generating all 2-cell embedded simple graphs with up to a fixed number of vertices on a given surface. We also modify these procedures to generate closed 2-cell embeddings and polyhedral embeddings. We give results of computer implementations of these procedures for seven surfaces: the sphere, the torus, the double torus, the projective plane, the Klein bottle, the triple cross surface, and the quadruple cross surface.

Variation of the local topological structure of graph embeddings
The $2$-cell embeddings of graphs on closed surfaces have been widely studied. It is well known that ($2$-cell) embedding a given graph $G$ on a closed orientable surface is equivalent to cyclically ordering the edges incident to each vertex of $G$. In this paper, we study the following problem: given a genus $g$ embedding $\mathbb{E}$ of the graph $G$, if we randomly rearrange the edges around a vertex, i.e., re-embedding, what is the probability of the resulting embedding $\mathbb{E}'$ having genus $g+Δg$? We give a formula to compute this probability. Meanwhile, some other known and unknown results are also obtained. For example, we show that the probability of preserving the genus is at least $\frac{2}{deg(v)+2}$ for re-embedding any vertex $v$ of degree $deg(v)$ in a one-face embedding; and we obtain a necessary condition for a given embedding of $G$ to be an embedding with the minimum genus.

Partial duality and closed 2-cell embeddings
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2009 Chmutov introduced the idea of partial duality for embeddings of graphs in surfaces. We discuss some alternative descriptions of partial duality, which demonstrate the symmetry between vertices and faces. One is in terms of band decompositions, and the other is in terms of the gem (graph-encoded map) representation of an embedding. We then use these to investigate when a partial dual is a closed 2-cell embedding, in which every face is bounded by a cycle in the graph. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a partial dual to be closed 2-cell, and also a sufficient condition for no partial dual to be closed 2-cell.

Heffter Arrays and Biembedding Graphs on Surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Heffter array is an m by n matrix with nonzero entries from Z_{2mn+1} such that i) every row and column sum to 0, and ii) no element from {x,-x} appears twice. We construct some Heffter arrays. These arrays are used to build current graphs used in topological graph theory. In turn, the current graphs are used to embed the complete graph K_{2mn+1} so that the faces can be 2-colored, called a biembedding. Under certain conditions each color class forms a cycle system. These generalize biembeddings of Steiner triple systems. We discuss some variations including Heffter arrays with empty cells, embeddings on nonorientable surfaces, complete multigraphs, and using integer in place of modular arithmetic.

On the Roman Bondage Number of Graphs on surfaces
A Roman dominating function on a graph $G$ is a labeling $f : V(G) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ such that every vertex with label $0$ has a neighbor with label $2$. The Roman domination number, $γ_R(G)$, of $G$ is the minimum of $Σ_{v\in V (G)} f(v)$ over such functions. The Roman bondage number $b_R(G)$ is the cardinality of a smallest set of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with Roman domination number not equal to $γ_R(G)$. In this paper we obtain upper bounds on $b_{R}(G)$ in terms of (a) the average degree and maximum degree, and (b) Euler characteristic, girth and maximum degree. We also show that the Roman bondage number of every graph which admits a $2$-cell embedding on a surface with non negative Euler characteristic does not exceed $15$.

Character-theoretic Techniques for Near-central Enumerative Problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
The centre of the symmetric group algebra $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ has been used successfully for studying important problems in enumerative combinatorics. These include maps in orientable surfaces and ramified covers of the sphere by curves of genus $g$, for example. However, the combinatorics of some equally important $\mathfrak{S}_n$-factorization problems forces $k$ elements in $\{1,...,n\}$ to be distinguished. Examples of such problems include the star factorization problem, for which $k=1,$ and the enumeration of 2-cell embeddings of dipoles with two distinguished edges \cite{VisentinWieler:2007} associated with Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase operators in Yang-Mills theory \cite{ConstableFreedmanHeadrick:2002}, for which $k=2.$ Although distinguishing these elements obstructs the use of central methods, these problems may be encoded algebraically in the centralizer of $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ with respect to the subgroup $\mathfrak{S}_{n-k}.$ We develop methods for studying these problems for $k=1,$ and demonstrate their efficacy on the star factorization problem. In a subsequent paper \cite{JacksonSloss:2011}, we consider a special case of the the above dipole problem by means of these techniques.

Classification of nonorientable regular embeddings of Hamming graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
By a regular embedding of a graph K in a surface we mean a 2-cell embedding of K in a compact connected surface such that the automorphism group acts regularly on flags. In this paper, we classify the nonorientable regular embeddings of the Hamming graph H(d,n). We show that there exists such an embedding if and only if n=2 and d=2, or n=3 or 4 and d>0, or n=6 and d=1 or 2. We also give constructions and descriptions of these embeddings.

Classification of nonorientable regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 2-cell embedding of a graph $G$ into a closed (orientable or nonorientable) surface is called regular if its automorphism group acts regularly on the flags - mutually incident vertex-edge-face triples. In this paper, we classify the regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ into nonorientable surfaces. Such regular embedding of $K_{n,n}$ exists only when $n = 2p_1^{a_1}p_2^{a_2}... p_k^{a_k}$ (a prime decomposition of $n$) and all $p_i \equiv \pm 1 (\mod 8)$. In this case, the number of those regular embeddings of $K_{n,n}$ up to isomorphism is $2^k$.

Orientable embeddings and orientable cycle double covers of projective-planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a closed 2-cell embedding of a graph each face is homeomorphic to an open disk and is bounded by a cycle in the graph. The Orientable Strong Embedding Conjecture says that every 2-connected graph has a closed 2-cell embedding in some orientable surface. This implies both the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture and the Strong Embedding Conjecture. In this paper we prove that every 2-connected projective-planar cubic graph has a closed 2-cell embedding in some orientable surface. The three main ingredients of the proof are (1) a surgical method to convert nonorientable embeddings into orientable embeddings; (2) a reduction for 4-cycles for orientable closed 2-cell embeddings, or orientable cycle double covers, of cubic graphs; and (3) a structural result for projective-planar embeddings of cubic graphs. We deduce that every 2-edge-connected projective-planar graph (not necessarily cubic) has an orientable cycle double cover.

Strong embeddings of minimum genus
Published in Discrete Math. 310 (2010) 2595-2599 • View PublicationBIB
A "folklore conjecture, probably due to Tutte" (as described in [P.D. Seymour, Sums of circuits, Graph theory and related topics (Proc. Conf., Univ. Waterloo, 1977), pp. 341-355, Academic Press, 1979]) asserts that every bridgeless cubic graph can be embedded on a surface of its own genus in such a way that the face boundaries are cycles of the graph. In this paper we consider closed 2-cell embeddings of graphs and show that certain (cubic) graphs (of any fixed genus) have closed 2-cell embedding only in surfaces whose genus is very large (proportional to the order of these graphs), thus providing plethora of strong counterexamples to the above conjecture. The main result yielding such counterexamples may be of independent interest.

Annular embeddings of permutations for arbitrary genus
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the symmetric group on a set of size 2n, let P_{2n} denote the conjugacy class of involutions with no fixed points (equivalently, we refer to these as ``pairings'', since each disjoint cycle has length 2). Harer and Zagier explicitly determined the distribution of the number of disjoint cycles in the product of a fixed cycle of length 2n and the elements of P_{2n}. Their famous result has been reproved many times, primarily because it can be interpreted as the genus distribution for 2-cell embeddings in an orientable surface,of a graph with a single vertex attached to n loops. In this paper we give a new formula for the cycle distribution when a fixed permutation with two cycles (say the lengths are p,q, where p+q=2n) is multiplied by the elements of P_{2n}. It can be interpreted as the genus distribution for 2-cell embeddings in an orientable surface, of a graph with two vertices, of degrees p and q. In terms of these graphs, the formula involves a parameter that allows us to specify, separately, the number of edges between the two vertices and the number of loops at each of the vertices. The proof is combinatorial, and uses a new algorithm that we introduce to create all rooted forests containing a given rooted forest.

A classification of prime-valent regular Cayley maps on some groups
Published in Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 47 (2010) 17-27 • View PublicationBIB
A Cayley map is a 2-cell embedding of a Cayley graph into an orientable surface with the same local orientation induced by a cyclic permutation of generators at each vertex. In this paper, we provide classifications of prime-valent regular Cayley maps on abelian groups, dihedral groups and dicyclic groups. Consequently, we show that all prime-valent regular Cayley maps on dihedral groups are balanced and all prime-valent regular Cayley maps on abelian groups are either balanced or anti-balanced. Furthermore, we prove that there is no prime-valent regular Cayley map on any dicyclic group.
