Size Ramsey numbers of stars versus cliques
Published • View PublicationBIB
The size Ramsey number $ \hat{r}(G,H) $ of two graphs $ G $ and $ H $ is the smallest integer $ m $ such that there exists a graph $ F $ on $ m $ edges with the property that every red-blue colouring of the edges of $ F $, yields a red copy of $ G $ or a blue copy of $ H $. In $ 1981 $, Erdős observed that $\hat{r}(K_{1,k},K_{3})\leq \binom{2k+1}{2}-\binom{k}{2}$ and he conjectured that the corresponding upper bound on $ \hat{r}(K_{1,k},K_{3}) $ is sharp. In $ 1983 $, Faudree and Sheehan extended this conjecture as follows: \hat{r}(K_{1,k},K_{n})=\left \{ {lr} \binom{k(n-1)+1}{2}-\binom{k}{2} & ~k\geq n~ \text{or}~ k~ \text{odd}. \binom{k(n-1)+1}{2}-k(n-1)/2 & \text{otherwise}. \right. They proved the case $ k=2 $. In $ 2001 $, Pikhurko showed that this conjecture is not true for $ n=3 $ and $ k\geq 5 $, disproving the mentioned conjecture of Erdős. Here we prove Faudree and Sheehan's conjecture for a given $ k\geq 2 $ and $ n\geq k^{3}+2k^{2}+2k $.

Maximizing $H$-colorings of connected graphs with fixed minimum degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
For graphs $G$ and $H$, an $H$-coloring of $G$ is a map from the vertices of $G$ to the vertices of $H$ that preserves edge adjacency. We consider the following extremal enumerative question: for a given $H$, which connected $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree $δ$ maximizes the number of $H$-colorings? We show that for non-regular $H$ and sufficiently large $n$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{δ,n-δ}$ is the unique maximizer. As a corollary, for non-regular $H$ and sufficiently large $n$ the graph $K_{k,n-k}$ is the unique $k$-connected graph that maximizes the number of $H$-colorings among all $k$-connected graphs. Finally, we show that this conclusion does not hold for all regular $H$ by exhibiting a connected $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree $δ$ which has more $K_{q}$-colorings (for sufficiently large $q$ and $n$) than $K_{δ,n-δ}$.

The $k$-proper index of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A tree $T$ in an edge-colored graph is a \emph{proper tree} if any two adjacent edges of $T$ are colored with different colors. Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and $k$ be a fixed integer with $2\leq k\leq n$. For a vertex set $S\subseteq V(G)$, a tree containing the vertices of $S$ in $G$ is called an \emph{$S$-tree}. An edge-coloring of $G$ is called a \emph{$k$-proper coloring} if for every set $S$ of $k$ vertices in $G$, there exists a proper $S$-tree in $G$. The \emph{$k$-proper index} of a nontrivial connected graph $G$, denoted by $px_k(G)$, is the smallest number of colors needed in a $k$-proper coloring of $G$. In this paper, some simple observations about $px_k(G)$ for a nontrivial connected graph $G$ are stated. Meanwhile, the $k$-proper indices of some special graphs are determined, and for every pair of positive integers $a$, $b$ with $2\leq a\leq b$, a connected graph $G$ with $px_k(G)=a$ and $rx_k(G)=b$ is constructed for each integer $k$ with $3\leq k\leq n$. Also, the graphs with $k$-proper index $n-1$ and $n-2$ are respectively characterized.

On the Long-Repetition-Free 2-Colorability of Trees
Published in Rose-Hulman Undergrad. Math. J. 18 (2017), no. 1, Art. 15, 262--269 • Search Publication
A word $\bar{w} = \bar{u}\bar{u}$ is a $long$ $square$ if $\bar{u}$ is of length at least 3; a word $\bar{w}$ is $long$-$square$-$free$ if $\bar{w}$ contains no sub-word that is a long square. We can use words to generate graph colorings; a graph coloring is called $long$-$repetition$-$free$ if the word formed by the coloring of each path in the graph is long-square-free. Our results show that every rooted tree of radius less than or equal to seven is long-repetition-free two-colorable. We also prove there exists a class of trees which are not long-repetition-free two-colorable.

Total monochromatic connection of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is said to be {\it total-colored} if all the edges and the vertices of the graph are colored. A path in a total-colored graph is a {\it total monochromatic path} if all the edges and internal vertices on the path have the same color. A total-coloring of a graph is a {\it total monochromatically-connecting coloring} ({\it TMC-coloring}, for short) if any two vertices of the graph are connected by a total monochromatic path of the graph. For a connected graph $G$, the {\it total monochromatic connection number}, denoted by $tmc(G)$, is defined as the maximum number of colors used in a TMC-coloring of $G$. These concepts are inspired by the concepts of monochromatic connection number $mc(G)$, monochromatic vertex connection number $mvc(G)$ and total rainbow connection number $trc(G)$ of a connected graph $G$. Let $l(T)$ denote the number of leaves of a tree $T$, and let $l(G)=\max\{ l(T) | $ $T$ is a spanning tree of $G$ $\}$ for a connected graph $G$. In this paper, we show that there are many graphs $G$ such that $tmc(G)=m-n+2+l(G)$, and moreover, we prove that for almost all graphs $G$, $tmc(G)=m-n+2+l(G)$ holds. Furthermore, we compare $tmc(G)$ with $mvc(G)$ and $mc(G)$, respectively, and obtain that there exist graphs $G$ such that $tmc(G)$ is not less than $mvc(G)$ and vice versa, and that $tmc(G)=mc(G)+l(G)$ holds for almost all graphs. Finally, we prove that $tmc(G)\leq mc(G)+mvc(G)$, and the equality holds if and only if $G$ is a complete graph.
Brooks's theorem for measurable colorings
Published in Forum of Math., Sigma, 4, 2016, E16 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize Brooks's theorem to show that if $G$ is a Borel graph on a standard Borel space $X$ of degree bounded by $d \geq 3$ which contains no $(d+1)$-cliques, then $G$ admits a $μ$-measurable $d$-coloring with respect to any Borel probability measure $μ$ on $X$, and a Baire measurable $d$-coloring with respect to any compatible Polish topology on $X$. The proof of this theorem uses a new technique for constructing one-ended spanning subforests of Borel graphs, as well as ideas from the study of list colorings. We apply the theorem to graphs arising from group actions to obtain factor of IID $d$-colorings of Cayley graphs of degree $d$, except in two exceptional cases.

Coloring connections with counting mountain-valley assignments
Published in Origami6: Proceedings of the 6th International Meeting of Origami in Science, Mathematics, and Education, The American Mathematical Society, 2015, pp. 3-11 • View PublicationBIB
We survey more recent attempts at enumerating the number of mountain-valley assignments that allow a given crease pattern to locally fold flat. In particular, we solve this problem for square twist tessellations and generalize the method used to a broader family of crease patterns. We also describe the more difficult case of the Miura-ori and a recently-discovered bijection with 3-vertex colorings of grid graphs.

On some multicolour Ramsey properties of random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The size-Ramsey number $\hat{R}(F)$ of a graph $F$ is the smallest integer $m$ such that there exists a graph $G$ on $m$ edges with the property that any colouring of the edges of $G$ with two colours yields a monochromatic copy of $F$. In this paper, first we focus on the size-Ramsey number of a path $P_n$ on $n$ vertices. In particular, we show that $5n/2-15/2 \le \hat{R}(P_n) \le 74n$ for $n$ sufficiently large. (The upper bound uses expansion properties of random $d$-regular graphs.) This improves the previous lower bound, $\hat{R}(P_n) \ge (1+\sqrt{2})n-O(1)$, due to Bollobás, and the upper bound, $\hat{R}(P_n) \le 91n$, due to Letzter. Next we study long monochromatic paths in edge-coloured random graph $G(n,p)$ with $pn \to \infty$. Let $α> 0$ be an arbitrarily small constant. Recently, Letzter showed that a.a.s.\ any $2$-edge colouring of $G(n,p)$ yields a monochromatic path of length $(2/3-α)n$, which is optimal. Extending this result, we show that a.a.s.\ any $3$-edge colouring of $G(n,p)$ yields a monochromatic path of length $(1/2-α)n$, which is also optimal. In general, we prove that for $r\ge 4$ a.a.s.\ any $r$-edge colouring of $G(n,p)$ yields a monochromatic path of length $(1/r-α)n$. We also consider a related problem and show that for any $r \ge 2$, a.a.s.\ any $r$-edge colouring of $G(n,p)$ yields a monochromatic connected subgraph on $(1/(r-1)-α)n$ vertices, which is also tight.

Improper Twin Edge Coloring of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph whose each component has order at least 3. Let $s : E(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_k$ for some integer $k\geq 2$ be an improper edge coloring of $G$ (where adjacent edges may be assigned the same color). If the induced vertex coloring $c : V (G) \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_k$ defined by $c(v) = \sum_{e\in E_v} s(e) \mbox{ in } \mathbb{Z}_k,$ (where the indicated sum is computed in $\mathbb{Z}_k$ and $E_v$ denotes the set of all edges incident to $v$) results in a proper vertex coloring of $G$, then we refer to such a coloring as an improper twin $k$-edge coloring. The minimum $k$ for which $G$ has an improper twin $k$-edge coloring is called the improper twin chromatic index of $G$ and is denoted by $χ'_{it}(G)$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a graph with vertex chromatic number $χ(G)$, then $χ'_{it}(G)=χ(G)$, unless $χ(G)=2 \pmod 4$ and in this case $χ'_{it}(G)\in \{χ(G), χ(G)+1\}$. Moreover, we show that it is NP-hard to decide whether $χ'_{it}(G)=χ(G)$ or $χ'_{it}(G)=χ(G)+1$ and give some examples of perfect graph classes for which the problem is polynomial.

Bounded colorings of multipartite graphs and hypergraphs
Let $c$ be an edge-coloring of the complete $n$-vertex graph $K_n$. The problem of finding properly colored and rainbow Hamilton cycles in $c$ was initiated in 1976 by Bollobás and Erd\H os and has been extensively studied since then. Recently it was extended to the hypergraph setting by Dudek, Frieze and Ruciński. We generalize these results, giving sufficient local (resp. global) restrictions on the colorings which guarantee a properly colored (resp. rainbow) copy of a given hypergraph $G$. We also study multipartite analogues of these questions. We give (up to a constant factor) optimal sufficient conditions for a coloring $c$ of the complete balanced $m$-partite graph to contain a properly colored or rainbow copy of a given graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$. Our bounds exhibit a surprising transition in the rate of growth, showing that the problem is fundamentally different in the regimes $Δ\gg m$ and $Δ\ll m$ Our main tool is the framework of Lu and Székely for the space of random bijections, which we extend to product spaces.

A Note On Vertex Distinguishing Edge colorings of Trees
A proper edge coloring of a simple graph $G$ is called a vertex distinguishing edge coloring (vdec) if for any two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, the set of the colors assigned to the edges incident to $u$ differs from the set of the colors assigned to the edges incident to $v$. The minimum number of colors required for all vdecs of $G$ is denoted by $χ\,'_s(G)$ called the vdec chromatic number of $G$. Let $n_d(G)$ denote the number of vertices of degree $d$ in $G$. In this note, we show that a tree $T$ with $n_2(T)\leq n_1(T)$ holds $χ\,'_s(T)=n_1(T)+1$ if its diameter $D(T)=3$ or one of two particular trees with $D(T) =4$, and $χ\,'_s(T)=n_1(T)$ otherwise; furthermore $χ\,'_{es}(T)=χ\,'_s(T)$ when $|E(T)|\leq 2(n_1(T)+1)$, where $χ\,'_{es}(T)$ is the equitable vdec chromatic number of $T$.

Discrepancy of line segments for general lattice checkerboards
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a series of papers recently "checkerboard discrepancy" has been introduced, where a black-and-white checkerboard background induces a coloring on any curve, and thus a discrepancy, i.e., the difference of the length of the curve colored white and the length colored black. Mainly straight lines and circles have been studied and the general situation is that, no matter what the background coloring, there is always a curve in the family studied whose discrepancy is at least of the order of the square root of the length of the curve. In this paper we generalize the shape of the background, keeping the lattice structure. Our background now consists of lattice copies of any bounded fundamental domain of the lattice, and not necessarily of squares, as was the case in the previous papers. As the decay properties of the Fourier Transform of the indicator function of the square were strongly used before, we now have to use a quite different proof, in which the tiling and spectral properties of the fundamental domain play a role.

Complexity of choosability with a small palette of colors
A graph is $\ell$-choosable if, for any choice of lists of $\ell$ colors for each vertex, there is a list coloring, which is a coloring where each vertex receives a color from its list. We study complexity issues of choosability of graphs when the number $k$ of colors is limited. We get results which differ surprisingly from the usual case where $k$ is implicit and which extend known results for the usual case. We also exhibit some classes of graphs (defined by structural properties of their blocks) which are choosable.

Pathwidth and nonrepetitive list coloring
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 23/4:P4.40, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
A vertex coloring of a graph is nonrepetitive if there is no path in the graph whose first half receives the same sequence of colors as the second half. While every tree can be nonrepetitively colored with a bounded number of colors (4 colors is enough), Fiorenzi, Ochem, Ossona de Mendez, and Zhu recently showed that this does not extend to the list version of the problem, that is, for every $\ell \geq 1$ there is a tree that is not nonrepetitively $\ell$-choosable. In this paper we prove the following positive result, which complements the result of Fiorenzi et al.: There exists a function $f$ such that every tree of pathwidth $k$ is nonrepetitively $f(k)$-choosable. We also show that such a property is specific to trees by constructing a family of pathwidth-2 graphs that are not nonrepetitively $\ell$-choosable for any fixed $\ell$.

Three-coloring triangle-free graphs on surfaces VII. A linear-time algorithm
We give a linear-time algorithm to decide 3-colorability of a triangle-free graph embedded in a fixed surface, and a quadratic-time algorithm to output a 3-coloring in the affirmative case. The algorithms also allow to prescribe the coloring of a bounded number of vertices.

Homomorphisms of Strongly Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that if $G$ and $H$ are primitive strongly regular graphs with the same parameters and $\varphi$ is a homomorphism from $G$ to $H$, then $\varphi$ is either an isomorphism or a coloring (homomorphism to a complete subgraph). Therefore, the only endomorphisms of a primitive strongly regular graph are automorphisms or colorings. This confirms and strengthens a conjecture of Cameron and Kazanidis that all strongly regular graphs are cores or have complete cores. The proof of the result is elementary, mainly relying on linear algebraic techniques. In the second half of the paper we discuss implications of the result and the idea underlying the proof. We also show that essentially the same proof can be used to obtain a more general statement.

On New Thue Colouring Concepts of Certain Graphs
The Thue colouring of a graph is a colouring such that the sequence of vertex colours of any path of even and finite length in $G$ is non-repetitive. The change in the Thue number, $π(G)$, as edges are iteratively removed from a graph $G$ is studied. The notion of the $τ$-index denoted, $τ(G)$, of a graph $G$ is introduced as well. $τ(G)$ serves as a measure for the efficiency of edge deletion to reduce the Thue chromatic number of a graph.

Signed tilings by ribbon L n-ominoes, n even, via Groebner bases
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{T}_n$ be the set of ribbon $L$-shaped $n$-ominoes for some $n\ge 4$ even, and let $\mathcal{T}_n^+$ be $\mathcal{T}_n$ with an extra $2\times 2$ square. We investigate signed tilings of rectangles by $\mathcal{T}_n$ and $\mathcal{T}_n^+$. We show that a rectangle has a signed tiling by $\mathcal{T}_n$ if and only if both sides of the rectangle are even and one of them is divisible by $n$, or if one of the sides is odd and the other side is divisible by $n\left (\frac{n}{2}-2\right ).$ We also show that a rectangle has a signed tiling by $\mathcal{T}_n^+, n\ge 6$ even, if and only if both sides of the rectangle are even, or if one of the sides is odd and the other side is divisible by $n\left (\frac{n}{2}-2\right ).$ Our proofs are based on the exhibition of explicit Gröbner bases for the ideals generated by polynomials associated to the tiling sets. In particular, we show that some of the regular tiling results in \emph{ V.~Nitica, Every tiling of the first quadrant by ribbon $L$ $n$-ominoes follows the rectangular pattern. Probing Graph Proper Total Colorings With Additional Constrained Conditions
Graph colorings are becoming an increasingly useful family of mathematical models for a broad range of applications, such as time tabling and scheduling, frequency assignment, register allocation, computer security and so on. Graph proper total colorings with additional constrained conditions have been investigated intensively in the last decade year. In this article some new graph proper total colorings with additional constrained conditions are defined, and approximations to the chromatic numbers of these colorings are researched, as well as some graphs having these colorings have been verified.

Extracting list colorings from large independent sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We take an application of the Kernel Lemma by Kostochka and Yancey to its logical conclusion. The consequence is a sort of magical way to draw conclusions about list coloring (and online list coloring) just from the existence of an independent set incident to many edges. We use this to prove an Ore-degree version of Brooks' Theorem for online list-coloring. The Ore-degree of an edge $xy$ in a graph $G$ is $θ(xy) = d_G(x) + d_G(y)$. The Ore-degree of $G$ is $θ(G) = \max_{xy\in E(G)}θ(xy)$. We show that every graph with $θ\ge18$ and $ω\le\fracθ{2}$ is online $\left\lfloor \fracθ{2}\right\rfloor $-choosable. In addition, we prove an upper bound for online list-coloring triangle-free graphs: $χ_{OL}\leΔ+1-\lfloor\frac{1}{4}\lg(Δ)\rfloor$. Finally, we characterize Gallai trees as the connected graphs $G$ with no independent set incident to at least $|G|$ edges.
