This article contains a proof of the MDS conjecture for $k \leq 2p-2$. That is, that if $S$ is a set of vectors of ${\mathbb F}_q^k$ in which every subset of $S$ of size $k$ is a basis, where $q=p^h$, $p$ is prime and $q$ is not and $k \leq 2p-2$, then $|S| \leq q+1$. It also contains a short proof of the same fact for $k\leq p$, for all $q$.
On the complete cd-index of a Bruhat interval

We study the non-negativity conjecture of the complete cd-index of a Bruhat interval defined by Billera and Brenti. For each cd-monomial M we construct a set of paths, such that if a "flip condition" is satisfied, then the number of these paths is the coefficient of the monomial M in the complete cd-index. When the monomial contains at most one d, then the condition follows from Dyer's proof of Cellini's conjecture. Hence the coefficients of these monomials are non-negative. We also relate the flip condition to shelling of Bruhat intervals.
The maximum agreement subtree problem

In this paper we investigate an extremal problem on binary phylogenetic trees. Given two such trees $T_1$ and $T_2$, both with leaf-set ${1,2,...,n}$, we are interested in the size of the largest subset $S \subseteq {1,2,...,n}$ of leaves in a common subtree of $T_1$ and $T_2$. We show that any two binary phylogenetic trees have a common subtree on $Ω(\sqrt{\log{n}})$ leaves, thus improving on the previously known bound of $Ω(\log\log n)$ due to M. Steel and L. Szekely. To achieve this improved bound, we first consider two special cases of the problem: when one of the trees is balanced or a caterpillar, we show that the largest common subtree has $Ω(\log n)$ leaves. We then handle the general case by proving and applying a Ramsey-type result: that every binary tree contains either a large balanced subtree or a large caterpillar. We also show that there are constants $c, α> 0$ such that, when both trees are balanced, they have a common subtree on $c n^α$ leaves. We conjecture that it is possible to take $α= 1/2$ in the unrooted case, and both $c = 1$ and $α= 1/2$ in the rooted case.
Rainbow Induced Subgraphs in Replication Graphs
A graph $G$ is called a replication graph of a graph $H$ if $G$ is obtained from $H$ by replacing vertices of $H$ by arbitrary cliques of vertices and then replacing each edge in $H$ by all the edges between corresponding cligues. For a given graph $H$ the $ρ_R(H)$ is the minimal number of vertices of a replication graph $G$ of $H$ such that every proper vertex coloring of $G$ contains a rainbow induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$ having exactly one vertex in each replication clique of $G$. We prove some bounds for $ρ_R$ for some classes of graphs and compute some exact values. Also some experimental results obtained by a computer search are presented and conjectures based on them are formulated.

We prove that if $E \subset {\mathbb F}_q^2$, $q \equiv 3 \mod 4$, has size greater than $Cq^{7/4}$, then $E$ determines a positive proportion of all congruence classes of triangles in ${\mathbb F}_q^2$.
The approach in this paper is based on the approach to the Erd\H os distance problem in the plane due to Elekes and Sharir, followed by an incidence bound for points and lines in ${\mathbb F}_q^3$. We also establish a weak lower bound for a related problem in the sense that any subset $E$ of ${\mathbb F}_q^2$ of size less than $cq^{4/3}$ definitely does not contain a positive proportion of {\bf translation} classes of triangles in the plane. This result is a special case of a result established for $n$-simplices in ${\mathbb F}_q^d$. Finally, a necessary and sufficient condition on the lengths of a triangle for it to exist in $\mathbb{F}^2$ for any field $\mathbb F$ of characteristic not equal to 2 is established as a special case of a result for $d$-simplices in ${\mathbb F}^d$.
Packing of Rigid Spanning Subgraphs and Spanning Trees

We prove that every (6k + 2l, 2k)-connected simple graph contains k rigid and l connected edge-disjoint spanning subgraphs. This implies a theorem of Jackson and Jordán [4] and a theorem of Jordán [6] on packing of rigid spanning subgraphs. Both these results are generalizations of the classical result of Lovász and Yemini [9] saying that every 6-connected graph is rigid for which our approach provides a transparent proof. Our result also gives two improved upper bounds on the connectivity of graphs that have interesting properties: (1) every 8-connected graph packs a spanning tree and a 2-connected spanning subgraph; (2) every 14-connected graph has a 2-connected orientation.
A note on heterochromatic cycles of length 4 in edge-colored graphs
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph. A heterochromatic cycle of $G$ is one in which every two edges have different colors. For a vertex $v\in V(G)$, let $CN(v)$ denote the set of colors which are assigned to the edges incident to $v$. In this note we prove that $G$ contains a heterochromatic cycle of length 4 if $G$ has $n\geq 60$ vertices and $|CN(u)\cup CN(v)|\geq n-1$ for every pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. This extends a result of Broersma et al. on the existence of heterochromatic cycles of length 3 or 4.
New Bounds on van der Waerden-type Numbers for Generalized 3-term Arithmetic Progressions
Let a and b be positive integers with a \leq b. An (a,b)-triple is a set {x,ax+d,bx+ 2d}, where x,d \geq 1. Define T(a,b;r) to be the least positive integer n such that any r-coloring of {1,2...,n} contains a monochromatic (a,b)-triple. Earlier results gave an upper bound on T(a,b;2) that is a fourth degree polynomial in b and a, and a quadratic lower bound. A new upper bound for T(a,b;2) is given that is a quadratic. Additionally, lower bounds are given for the case in which a = b, updated tables are provided, and open questions are presented.

We prove that a two-spherical split Kac-Moody group over a local field naturally provides a topological twin building in the sense of Kramer. This existence result and the local-to-global principle for twin building topologies combined with the theory of Moufang foundations as introduced and studied by Mühlherr, Ronan, and Tits allows one to immediately obtain a classification of two-spherical split Moufang topological twin buildings whose underlying Coxeter diagram contains no loop and no isolated vertices.

In [9], the codewords of small weight in the dual code of the code of points and lines of Q(4, q) are characterised. Inspired by this result, using geometrical arguments, we characterise the codewords of small weight in the dual code of the code of points and generators of Q+(5, q) and H(5, q2), and we present lower bounds on the weight of the codewords in the dual of the code of points and k-spaces of the classical polar spaces. Furthermore, we investigate the codewords with the largest weights in these codes, where for q even and k sufficiently small, we determine the maximum weight and characterise the codewords of maximum weight. Moreover, we show that there exists an interval such that for every even number w in this interval, there is a codeword in the dual code of Q+(5, q), q even, with weight w and we show that there is an empty interval in the weight distribution of the dual of the code of Q(4, q), q even. To prove this, we show that a blocking set of Q(4, q), q even, of size q2 +1+r, where 0 < r < (q +4)/6, contains an ovoid of Q(4, q), improving on [5, Theorem 9].
On the linearity of higher-dimensional blocking sets

A small minimal k-blocking set B in PG(n, q), q = pt, p prime, is a set of less than 3(qk + 1)/2 points in PG(n, q), such that every (n - k)-dimensional space contains at least one point of B and such that no proper subset of B satisfies this property. The linearity conjecture states that all small minimal k-blocking sets in PG(n, q) are linear over a subfield Fpe of Fq. Apart from a few cases, this conjecture is still open. In this paper, we show that to prove the linearity conjecture for k- blocking sets in PG(n, pt), with exponent e and pe \geq 7, it is sufficient to prove it for one value of n that is at least 2k. Furthermore, we show that the linearity of small minimal blocking sets in PG(2, q) implies the linearity of small minimal k-blocking sets in PG(n, pt), with exponent e, with pe \geq t/e + 11.
Euler flag enumeration of Whitney stratified spaces

The flag vector contains all the face incidence data of a polytope, and in the poset setting, the chain enumerative data. It is a classical result due to Bayer and Klapper that for face lattices of polytopes, and more generally, Eulerian graded posets, the flag vector can be written as a cd-index, a non-commutative polynomial which removes all the linear redundancies among the flag vector entries. This result holds for regular CW complexes.
We relax the regularity condition to show the cd-index exists for Whitney stratified manifolds by extending the notion of a graded poset to that of a quasi-graded poset. This is a poset endowed with an order-preserving rank function and a weighted zeta function. This allows us to generalize the classical notion of Eulerianness, and obtain a cd-index in the quasi-graded poset arena. We also extend the semi-suspension operation to that of embedding a complex in the boundary of a higher dimensional ball and study the simplicial shelling components.
Graphs with large generalized 3-connectivity
Let $S$ be a nonempty set of vertices of a connected graph $G$. A collection $T_1,..., T_\ell$ of trees in $G$ is said to be internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ if $E(T_i)\cap E(T_j)= \emptyset$ and $V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S$ for any pair of distinct integers $i, j$, where $1 \leq i, j \leq r$. For an integer $k$ with $2 \leq k \leq n$, the generalized $k$-connectivity $κ_k(G)$ of $G$ is the greatest positive integer $r$ such that $G$ contains at least $r$ internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ for any set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$. Obviously, $κ_2(G)$ is the connectivity of $G$. In this paper, sharp upper and lower bounds of $κ_3(G)$ are given for a connected graph $G$ of order $n$, that is, $1 \leq κ_3(G) \leq n - 2$. Graphs of order $n$ such that $κ_3(G) = n - 2, n - 3$ are characterized, respectively.

Robust Hamiltonicity of Dirac graphs

A graph is Hamiltonian if it contains a cycle which passes through every vertex of the graph exactly once. A classical theorem of Dirac from 1952 asserts that every graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n/2$ is Hamiltonian. We refer to such graphs as Dirac graphs. In this paper we extend Dirac's theorem in two directions and show that Dirac graphs are robustly Hamiltonian in a very strong sense. First, we consider a random subgraph of a Dirac graph obtained by taking each edge independently with probability $p$, and prove that there exists a constant $C$ such that if $p \ge C \log n / n$, then a.a.s. the resulting random subgraph is still Hamiltonian. Second, we prove that if a $(1:b)$ Maker-Breaker game is played on a Dirac graph, then Maker can construct a Hamiltonian subgraph as long as the bias $b$ is at most $cn /\log n$ for some absolute constant $c > 0$. Both of these results are tight up to a constant factor, and are proved under one general framework.
Shorter Tours by Nicer Ears: 7/5-approximation for graphic TSP, 3/2 for the path version, and 4/3 for two-edge-connected subgraphs
We prove new results for approximating the graphic TSP and some related problems. We obtain polynomial-time algorithms with improved approximation guarantees.
For the graphic TSP itself, we improve the approximation ratio to 7/5. For a generalization, the connected-$T$-join problem, we obtain the first nontrivial approximation algorithm, with ratio 3/2. This contains the graphic $s$-$t$-path-TSP as a special case. Our improved approximation guarantee for finding a smallest 2-edge-connected spanning subgraph is 4/3.
The key new ingredient of all our algorithms is a special kind of ear-decomposition optimized using forest representations of hypergraphs. The same methods also provide the lower bounds (arising from LP relaxations) that we use to deduce the approximation ratios.
A Multipartite Hajnal-Szemerédi Theorem

The celebrated Hajnal-Szemerédi theorem gives the precise minimum degree threshold that forces a graph to contain a perfect K_k-packing. Fischer's conjecture states that the analogous result holds for all multipartite graphs except for those formed by a single construction. Recently, we deduced an approximate version of this conjecture from new results on perfect matchings in hypergraphs. In this paper, we apply a stability analysis to the extremal cases of this argument, thus showing that the exact conjecture holds for any sufficiently large graph.
The strong rainbow vertex-connection of graphs
A vertex-colored graph $G$ is said to be rainbow vertex-connected if every two vertices of $G$ are connected by a path whose internal vertices have distinct colors, such a path is called a rainbow path. The rainbow vertex-connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rvc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow vertex-connected. If for every pair $u, v$ of distinct vertices, $G$ contains a rainbow $u-v$ geodesic, then $G$ is strong rainbow vertex-connected. The minimum number $k$ for which there exists a $k$-vertex-coloring of $G$ that results in a strongly rainbow vertex-connected graph is called the strong rainbow vertex-connection number of $G$, denoted by $srvc(G)$. Observe that $rvc(G)\leq srvc(G)$ for any nontrivial connected graph $G$. In this paper, sharp upper and lower bounds of $srvc(G)$ are given for a connected graph $G$ of order $n$, that is, $0\leq srvc(G)\leq n-2$. Graphs of order $n$ such that $srvc(G)= 1, 2, n-2$ are characterized, respectively. It is also shown that, for each pair $a, b$ of integers with $a\geq 5$ and $b\geq (7a-8)/5$, there exists a connected graph $G$ such that $rvc(G)=a$ and $srvc(G)=b$.

The Fibonacci cube $Γ_n$ is the subgraph of the hypercube induced by the binary strings that contain no two consecutive 1's. The Lucas cube $Λ_n$ is obtained from $Γ_n$ by removing vertices that start and end with 1. We characterize maximal induced hypercubes in $Γ_n$ and $Λ_n$ and deduce for any $p\leq n$ the number of maximal $p$-dimensional hypercubes in these graphs.
