Let $μ_1\ge μ_2\ge\cdots\geμ_n$ denote the Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ with $n$ vertices. The Laplacian-energy-like invariant, denoted by $LEL(G)= \sum_{i=1}^{n-1}\sqrt{μ_i}$, is a novel topological index. In this paper, we show that the Laplacian-energy-like per vertex of various lattices is independent of the toroidal, cylindrical, and free boundary conditions. Simultaneously, the explicit asymptotic values of the Laplacian-energy-like in these lattices are obtained. Moreover, our approach implies that in general the Laplacian-energy-like per vertex of other lattices is independent of the boundary conditions.

In this article we introduce the {\it cylindrical construction} for graphs and investigate its basic properties. We state a main result claiming a weak tensor-like duality for this construction. Details of our motivations and applications of the construction will appear elsewhere.
Shellable drawings and the cylindrical crossing number of $K_n$
The Harary-Hill Conjecture States that the number of crossings in any drawing of the complete graph $ K_n $ in the plane is at least $Z(n):=\frac{1}{4}\left\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor \frac{n-2}{2}\right\rfloor\left\lfloor \frac{n-3}{2}\right\rfloor$. In this paper, we settle the Harary-Hill conjecture for {\em shellable drawings}. We say that a drawing $D$ of $ K_n $ is {\em $ s $-shellable} if there exist a subset $ S = \{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_ s\}$ of the vertices and a region $R$ of $D$ with the following property: For all $1 \leq i < j \leq s$, if $D_{ij}$ is the drawing obtained from $D$ by removing $v_1,v_2,\ldots v_{i-1},v_{j+1},\ldots,v_{s}$, then $v_i$ and $v_j$ are on the boundary of the region of $D_{ij}$ that contains $R$. For $ s\geq n/2 $, we prove that the number of crossings of any $ s $-shellable drawing of $ K_n $ is at least the long-conjectured value Z(n). Furthermore, we prove that all cylindrical, $ x $-bounded, monotone, and 2-page drawings of $ K_n $ are $ s $-shellable for some $ s\geq n/2 $ and thus they all have at least $ Z(n) $ crossings. The techniques developed provide a unified proof of the Harary-Hill conjecture for these classes of drawings.

A topological graph drawn on a cylinder whose base is horizontal is \emph{angularly monotone} if every vertical line intersects every edge at most once. Let $c(n)$ denote the maximum number $c$ such that every simple angularly monotone drawing of a complete graph on $n$ vertices contains at least $c$ pairwise disjoint edges. We show that for every simple complete topological graph $G$ there exists $Δ$, $0<Δ<n$, such that $G$ contains at least $\max \{\frac nΔ, c(Δ)\}$ pairwise disjoint edges. By combining our result with a result of Tóth we obtain an alternative proof for the best known lower bound of $Ω(n^\frac 13)$ on the maximum number of pairwise disjoint edges in a simple complete topological graph proved by Suk. Our proof is based on a result of Ruiz-Vargas.

We examine semi-bar visibility graphs in the plane and on a cylinder in which sightlines can pass through k objects. We show every semi-bar k-visibility graph has a (k+2)-quasiplanar representation in the plane with vertices drawn as points in convex position and edges drawn as segments. We also show that the graphs having cylindrical semi-bar k-visibility representations with semi-bars of different lengths are the same as the (2k+2)-degenerate graphs having edge-maximal (k+2)-quasiplanar representations in the plane with vertices drawn as points in convex position and edges drawn as segments.
Connectivity patterns in loop percolation I: the rationality phenomenon and constant term identities

Loop percolation, also known as the dense O(1) loop model, is a variant of critical bond percolation in the square lattice Z^2 whose graph structure consists of a disjoint union of cycles. We study its connectivity pattern, which is a random noncrossing matching associated with a loop percolation configuration. These connectivity patterns exhibit a striking rationality property whereby probabilities of naturally-occurring events are dyadic rational numbers or rational functions of a size parameter n, but the reasons for this are not completely understood. We prove the rationality phenomenon in a few cases and prove an explicit formula expressing the probabilities in the "cylindrical geometry" as coefficients in certain multivariate polynomials. This reduces the rationality problem in the general case to that of proving a family of conjectural constant term identities generalizing an identity due to Di Francesco and Zinn-Justin. Our results make use of, and extend, algebraic techniques related to the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation.
Hard squares on cylinders revisited
We consider the independence complexes of square grids with cylindrical boundary conditions. When one of the dimensions is small we use simple reductions induced by edge removals to show explicit natural homotopy equivalences between those spaces. In the second part we expand the results of Jonsson, who calculated the Euler characteristic of cylinders with odd circumference. We describe a series of results for cylinders of even circumference. Finally we define a completely independent combinatorial model (necklaces) which calculates the generating functions of the Euler characteristic of cylindrical grids. We conjecture that this model has some particularly simple structure.

In this paper we study the inverse Dirichlet-to-Neumann problem for certain cylindrical electrical networks. We define and study a birational transformation acting on cylindrical electrical networks called the electrical $R$-matrix. We use this transformation to formulate a general conjectural solution to this inverse problem on the cylinder. This conjecture extends work of Curtis, Ingerman, and Morrow, and of de Verdière, Gitler, and Vertigan for circular planar electrical networks. We show that our conjectural solution holds for certain "purely cylindrical" networks. Here we apply the grove combinatorics introduced by Kenyon and Wilson.

In this article we examine the adjacency and Laplacian matrices and their eigenvalues and energies of the general product (non-complete extended $p$-sum, or NEPS) of signed graphs. We express the adjacency matrix of the product in terms of the Kronecker matrix product and the eigenvalues and energy of the product in terms of those of the factor signed graphs. For the Cartesian product we characterize balance and compute expressions for the Laplacian eigenvalues and Laplacian energy. We give exact results for those signed planar, cylindrical and toroidal grids which are Cartesian products of signed paths and cycles.
We also treat the eigenvalues and energy of the line graphs of signed graphs, and the Laplacian eigenvalues and Laplacian energy in the regular case, with application to the line graphs of signed grids that are Cartesian products and to the line graphs of all-positive and all-negative complete graphs.

We solve the monomer-dimer problem on a non-bipartite lattice, the simple quartic lattice with cylindrical boundary conditions, with a single monomer residing on the boundary. Due to the non-bipartite nature of the lattice, the well-known method of a Temperley bijection of solving single-monomer problems cannot be used. In this paper we derive the solution by mapping the problem onto one on close-packed dimers on a related lattice. Finite-size analysis of the solution is carried out. We find from asymptotic expansions of the free energy that the central charge in the logarithmic conformal field theory assumes the value $c=-2$.

We study, using transfer-matrix methods, the partition-function zeros of the square-lattice q-state Potts antiferromagnet at zero temperature (= square-lattice chromatic polynomial) for the special boundary conditions that are obtained from an m x n grid with free boundary conditions by adjoining one new vertex adjacent to all the sites in the leftmost column and a second new vertex adjacent to all the sites in the rightmost column. We provide numerical evidence that the partition-function zeros are becoming dense everywhere in the complex q-plane outside the limiting curve B_\infty(sq) for this model with ordinary (e.g. free or cylindrical) boundary conditions. Despite this, the infinite-volume free energy is perfectly analytic in this region.
Independence Complexes of Cylinders Constructed from Square and Hexagonal Grid Graphs
Fendley, Schoutens and van Eerten [Fendley et al., J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 38 (2005), pp. 315-322] studied the hard square model at negative activity. They found analytical and numerical evidence that the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix with periodic boundary were all roots of unity. They also conjectured that for an m times n square grid, with doubly periodic boundary, the partition function is equal to 1 when m and n are relatively prime. These conjectures were later proven by Jonsson [Jonsson, Electronic J. Combin., 13(1) (2006), R67]. There, it was also noted that the cylindrical case seemed to have interesting properties when the circumference of the cylinder is odd. In particular, when 3 is a divisor of both the circumference and the width of the cylinder minus 1, the partition function is -2. Otherwise, it is equal to 1. In this paper, we investigate the hard square and hard hexagon models at activity -1, with single periodic boundary, i.e, cylindrical identifications, using both topological and combinatorial techniques. We compute the homology groups of the associated independence complex for small sizes and suggest a matching which, we believe, with further analysis could help solve the conjecture.
The enumeration of independent sets on some lattices
In this paper, firstly we show that the entropy constants of the number of independent sets on certain plane lattices are the same as the entropy constants of the corresponding cylindrical and toroidal lattices. Secondly, we consider three more complex lattices which can not be handled by a single transfer matrix as in the plane quadratic lattice case. By introducing the concept of transfer multiplicity, we obtain the lower and upper bounds of the entropy constants of crossed quadratic lattice, generalized aztec diamond lattice and 8-8-4 lattice.
Asymptotic energy of graphs

The energy of a simple graph $G$ arising in chemical physics, denoted by $\mathcal E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of eigenvalues of $G$. We consider the asymptotic energy per vertex (say asymptotic energy) for lattice systems. In general for a type of lattice in statistical physics, to compute the asymptotic energy with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions are different tasks with different hardness. In this paper, we show that if $\{G_n\}$ is a sequence of finite simple graphs with bounded average degree and $\{G_n'\}$ a sequence of spanning subgraphs of $\{G_n\}$ such that almost all vertices of $G_n$ and $G_n'$ have the same degrees, then $G_n$ and $G_n'$ have the same asymptotic energy. Thus, for each type of lattices with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions, we have the same asymptotic energy. As applications, we obtain the asymptotic formulae of energies per vertex of the triangular, $3^3.4^2$, and hexagonal lattices with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions simultaneously.

We derive some new structural results for the transfer matrix of square-lattice Potts models with free and cylindrical boundary conditions. In particular, we obtain explicit closed-form expressions for the dominant (at large |q|) diagonal entry in the transfer matrix, for arbitrary widths m, as the solution of a special one-dimensional polymer model. We also obtain the large-q expansion of the bulk and surface (resp. corner) free energies for the zero-temperature antiferromagnet (= chromatic polynomial) through order q^{-47} (resp. q^{-46}). Finally, we compute chromatic roots for strips of widths 9 <= m <= 12 with free boundary conditions and locate roughly the limiting curves.
Clique Minors in Cartesian Products of Graphs

A "clique minor" in a graph G can be thought of as a set of connected subgraphs in G that are pairwise disjoint and pairwise adjacent. The "Hadwiger number" h(G) is the maximum cardinality of a clique minor in G. This paper studies clique minors in the Cartesian product G*H.
Our main result is a rough structural characterisation theorem for Cartesian products with bounded Hadwiger number. It implies that if the product of two sufficiently large graphs has bounded Hadwiger number then it is one of the following graphs:
- a planar grid with a vortex of bounded width in the outerface,
- a cylindrical grid with a vortex of bounded width in each of the two `big' faces, or
- a toroidal grid.
Motivation for studying the Hadwiger number of a graph includes Hadwiger's Conjecture, which states that the chromatic number chi(G) <= h(G). It is open whether Hadwiger's Conjecture holds for every Cartesian product. We prove that if |V(H)|-1 >= chi(G) >= chi(H) then Hadwiger's Conjecture holds for G*H. On the other hand, we prove that Hadwiger's Conjecture holds for all Cartesian products if and only if it holds for all G * K_2. We then show that h(G * K_2) is tied to the treewidth of G.
We also develop connections with pseudoachromatic colourings and connected dominating sets that imply near-tight bounds on the Hadwiger number of grid graphs (Cartesian products of paths) and Hamming graphs (Cartesian products of cliques).
Cylindrical lattice paths and the Loehr-Warrington 10^n conjecture
The following special case of a conjecture by Loehr and Warrington was proved recently by Ekhad, Vatter, and Zeilberger:
There are 10^n zero-sum words of length 5n in the alphabet {+3,-2} such that no zero-sum consecutive subword that starts with +3 may be followed immediately by -2.
We give a simple bijective proof of the conjecture in its original and more general setting. To do this we reformulate the problem in terms of cylindrical lattice paths.
Spanning forests and the q-state Potts model in the limit q \to 0

We study the q-state Potts model with nearest-neighbor coupling v=e^{βJ}-1 in the limit q,v \to 0 with the ratio w = v/q held fixed. Combinatorially, this limit gives rise to the generating polynomial of spanning forests; physically, it provides information about the Potts-model phase diagram in the neighborhood of (q,v) = (0,0). We have studied this model on the square and triangular lattices, using a transfer-matrix approach at both real and complex values of w. For both lattices, we have computed the symbolic transfer matrices for cylindrical strips of widths 2 \le L \le 10, as well as the limiting curves of partition-function zeros in the complex w-plane. For real w, we find two distinct phases separated by a transition point w=w_0, where w_0 = -1/4 (resp. w_0 = -0.1753 \pm 0.0002) for the square (resp. triangular) lattice. For w > w_0 we find a non-critical disordered phase, while for w < w_0 our results are compatible with a massless Berker-Kadanoff phase with conformal charge c = -2 and leading thermal scaling dimension x_{T,1} = 2 (marginal operator). At w = w_0 we find a "first-order critical point": the first derivative of the free energy is discontinuous at w_0, while the correlation length diverges as w \downarrow w_0 (and is infinite at w = w_0). The critical behavior at w = w_0 seems to be the same for both lattices and it differs from that of the Berker-Kadanoff phase: our results suggest that the conformal charge is c = -1, the leading thermal scaling dimension is x_{T,1} = 0, and the critical exponents are ν= 1/d = 1/2 and α= 1.

We investigate certain measures induced by families of non-intersecting paths in domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, rhombus tilings of an abc-hexagon, a dimer model on a cylindrical brick lattice and a growth model. The measures obtained, e.g. the Krawtchouk and Hahn ensembles, have the same structure as the eigenvalue measures in random matrix theory like GUE, which can in fact be obtained from non-intersecting Brownian motions. The derivations of the measures are based on the Karlin-McGregor or Lindström-Gessel-Viennot method. We use the measure to show some asymptotic results for the models.

Closed-form expressions are obtained for the partition function of the Ising model on an M x N simple-quartic lattice embedded on a Moebius strip and a Klein bottle for finite M and N. The finite-size effects at criticality are analyzed and compared with those under cylindrical and toroidal boundary conditions. Our analysis confirms that the central charge is c=1/2.
