Two Bessel Bridges Conditioned Never to Collide, Double Dirichlet Series, and Jacobi Theta Function
Published in J.Stat.Phys.131:1067-1083,2008 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the moments of the maximum value of a one-dimensional conditional Brownian motion, the three-dimensional Bessel bridge with duration 1 started from the origin, are expressed using the Riemann zeta function. We consider a system of two Bessel bridges, in which noncolliding condition is imposed. We show that the moments of the maximum value is then expressed using the double Dirichlet series, or using the integrals of products of the Jacobi theta functions and its derivatives. Since the present system will be provided as a diffusion scaling limit of a version of vicious walker model, the ensemble of 2-watermelons with a wall, the dominant terms in long-time asymptotics of moments of height of 2-watermelons are completely determined. For the height of 2-watermelons with a wall, the average value was recently studied by Fulmek by a method of enumerative combinatorics.
Coincidence rotations of the root lattice $A_4$
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 29 (2008) 1808-1819 • View PublicationBIB
The coincidence site lattices of the root lattice $A_4$ are considered, and the statistics of the corresponding coincidence rotations according to their indices is expressed in terms of a Dirichlet series generating function. This is possible via an embedding of $A_4$ into the icosian ring with its rich arithmetic structure, which recently (arXiv:math.MG/0702448) led to the classification of the similar sublattices of $A_4$.

Similar sublattices of the root lattice $A_4$
Published in J. Algebra 320 (2008) 1391-1408 • View PublicationBIB
Similar sublattices of the root lattice $A_4$ are possible, according to a result of Conway, Rains and Sloane, for each index that is the square of a non-zero integer of the form $m^2 + mn - n^2$. Here, we add a constructive approach, based on the arithmetic of the quaternion algebra $\mathbb{H} (\mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{5}))$ and the existence of a particular involution of the second kind, which also provides the actual sublattices and the number of different solutions for a given index. The corresponding Dirichlet series generating function is closely related to the zeta function of the icosian ring.

Asymptotics of abelian group-partitions and associated Dirichlet series
We introduce a notion of a group-partition for a finite Abelian group, which is a generalized notion of the standard partition. To obtain asymptoticdistributions of group-partition, we study the Dirichlet series for group-partitions by employing the generating function of the plane partition.

Solution of the coincidence problem in dimensions $d\le 4$

Discrete point sets $\mathcal{S}$ such as lattices or quasiperiodic Delone sets may permit, beyond their symmetries, certain isometries $R$ such that $\mathcal{S}\cap R\mathcal{S}$ is a subset of $\mathcal{S}$ of finite density. These are the so-called coincidence isometrie. They are important in understanding and classifying grain boundaries and twins in crystals and quasicrystals. It is the purpose of this contribution to introduce the corresponding coincidence problem in a mathematical setting and to demonstrate how it can be solved algebraically in dimensions 2, 3 and 4. Various examples both from crystals and quasicrystals are treated explicitly, in particular (hyper-)cubic lattices and quasicrystals with non-crystallographic point groups of type $H_2$, $H_3$ and $H_4$. We derive parametrizations of all linear coincidence isometries, determine the corresponding coincidence index (the reciprocal of the density of coinciding points, also called $\varSigma$-factor), and finally encapsulate their statistics in suitable Dirichlet series generating functions.

Eta-product $η(7τ)^7/η(τ)$
The Dirichlet series associated to the eta-product $η(7τ)^7/η(τ)$ decomposes uniquely into the difference of two L-functions with Euler products. This expression gives a new proof of the positivity of the Fourier coefficients of the eta-product.

Multiple planar coincidences with N-fold symmetry
Published in Zeitschrift fuer Kristallographie 221 (2006) 571-581 • View PublicationBIB
Planar coincidence site lattices and modules with N-fold symmetry are well understood in a formulation based on cyclotomic fields, in particular for the class number one case, where they appear as certain principal ideals in the corresponding ring of integers. We extend this approach to multiple coincidences, which apply to triple or multiple junctions. In particular, we give explicit results for spectral, combinatorial and asymptotic properties in terms of Dirichlet series generating functions.

On the arithmetic product of combinatorial species
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce two new binary operations with combinatorial species; the arithmetic product and the modified arithmetic product. The arithmetic product gives combinatorial meaning to the product of Dirichlet series and to the Lambert series in the context of species. It allows us to introduce the notion of multiplicative species, a lifting to the combinatorial level of the classical notion of multiplicative arithmetic function. Interesting combinatorial constructions are introduced; cloned assemblies of structures, hyper-cloned trees, enriched rectangles, etc. Recent research of Cameron, Gewurz and Merola, about the product action in the context of oligomorphic groups, motivated the introduction of the modified arithmetic product. By using the modified arithmetic product we obtain new enumerative results. We also generalize and simplify some recent results of Canfield, and Pittel, related to the enumerations of tuples of partitions with restricted meet.

Bravais colourings of planar modules with N-fold symmetry
Published in Zeitschrift f. Kristallographie 219 (2004) 72-80 • View PublicationBIB
The first step in investigating colour symmetries for periodic and aperiodic systems is the determination of all colouring schemes that are compatible with the symmetry group of the underlying structure, or with a subgroup of it. For an important class of colourings of planar structures, this mainly combinatorial question can be addressed with methods of algebraic number theory. We present the corresponding results for all planar modules with N-fold symmetry that emerge as the rings of integers in cyclotomic fields with class number one. The counting functions are multiplicative and can be encapsulated in Dirichlet series generating functions, which turn out to be the Dedekind zeta functions of the corresponding cyclotomic fields.

Combinatorial problems of (quasi-)crystallography
Published in In: Quasicrystals - Structure and Physical Properties, ed. H.-R. Trebin (Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, 2003), pp. 160-171 • Search Publication
Several combinatorial problems of (quasi-)crystallography are reviewed with special emphasis on a unified approach, valid for both crystals and quasicrystals. In particular, we consider planar sublattices, similarity sublattices, coincidence sublattices, their module counterparts, and central and averaged shelling. The corresponding counting functions are encapsulated in Dirichlet series generating functions, with explicit results for the triangular lattice and the twelvefold symmetric shield tiling. Other combinatorial properties are briefly summarised.

Invariant Submodules and Semigroups of Self-Similarities for Fibonacci Modules
Published in Aperiodic 97, eds. M. de Boissieu et al., World Scientific, Singapore (1998), pp. 21-27. • Search Publication
The problem of invariance and self-similarity in Z-modules is investigated. For a selection of examples relevant to quasicrystals, especially Fibonacci modules, we determine the semigroup of self-similarities and encapsulate the number of similarity submodules in terms of Dirichlet series generating functions.
