Independence polynomials of graphs
In this paper, we study the independence polynomial $P_G(x)$ of a finite simple graph $G$, with emphasis on the evaluation at $x=-1$, symmetry, and its connection with the $h$-polynomial of the edge ideal of $G$. For big star graphs, we determine exactly when $P_G(-1)$ is $0, 1$, or $-1$, characterize the pseudo-Gorenstein$^*$ members, and show that there is a unique big star with symmetric independence polynomial. We also study graphs obtained from a graph $H$ by attaching leaves to selected vertices. We derive an explicit formula for the resulting independence polynomial, determine the corresponding value at $-1$, and prove that if every vertex of $H$ receives at least one leaf, then the independence polynomial is symmetric if and only if each vertex receives exactly two leaves. As an application, we obtain exact criteria for the values of $P_G(-1)$ and for the pseudo-Gorenstein$^*$ members of caterpillar graphs. For cochordal graphs, we classify all symmetric independence polynomials. Finally, for connected graphs on $n$ vertices with small independence numbers, we determine the exact range of possible values of $P_G(-1)$.

Lattice points arising from regularity and $\mathrm{v}$-number of Graphs: Whisker and Cameron-Walker
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices and $I(G)\subseteq R$ be its edge ideal. In this paper, we initiate the study of determining lattice points in $\mathbb{N}^2$ that appear as a pair $(\mathrm{reg}(R/I(G)), \mathrm{v}(I(G)))$, where $G$ ranges over all connected graphs on $n$ vertices, and we denote this set by $\mathcal{RV}(n)$. Here `$\mathrm{reg}$' denotes the (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity and `$\mathrm{v}$' denotes the $\mathrm{v}$-number. We establish general bounds for $\mathcal{RV}(n)$ by identifying two sets $A(n)$ and $B(n)$ satisfying $A(n)\subseteq \mathcal{RV}(n)\subseteq B(n)$. Furthermore, we explicitly determine the subsets of $\mathcal{RV}(n)$ consisting of all possible pairs $(\mathrm{reg}(R/I(G)), \mathrm{v}(I(G)))$ arising from whisker graphs and Cameron-Walker graphs on $n$ vertices. Finally, we propose a conjecture on the subset of $\mathcal{RV}(n)$ arising from connected chordal graphs.

Algebraic Invariants of Edge Ideals Under Suspension
The central question of this paper is: how do algebraic invariants of edge ideals change under natural graph operations? We study this question through the lens of suspensions. The (full) suspension of a graph is obtained by adjoining a new vertex adjacent to every vertex of the original graph; this construction is well-understood in the literature. Motivated by the fact that regularity is preserved under full suspension while projective dimension becomes maximal, we refine the construction to selective suspensions, where the new vertex is joined only to a prescribed subset of vertices. We focus on two extremal choices: minimal vertex covers and maximal independent sets. For suspensions over minimal vertex covers of an arbitrary graph, regularity is preserved and projective dimension increases by one. Moreover, the independence polynomial changes in a controlled way, allowing us to track $\mathfrak a$-invariants under cover suspension. In contrast, the analogous uniform behavior fails in general for suspensions over maximal independent sets. We therefore analyze paths and cycles and give a complete description: projective dimension always increases by one, and regularity and the $\mathfrak a$-invariant are preserved except for a unique extremal family of paths, where both invariants increase by one.

The stable set of associated primes of a complementary edge ideal
We explicitly determine the associated primes of every power of a complementary edge ideal, prove that they satisfy the persistence property, and compute the $\text{v}$-function. In the course of the proofs, we completely describe the homological properties of all powers of squarefree monomial ideals generated in degrees large relative to the number of variables defining them.

On Toric Ideals Arising from the Chip-Firing Game
We study certain groups and ideals arising from the chip-firing game on a generalisation of graphs called pargraphs. Several well-known families of toric ideals, including those defining rational normal curves and binomial edge ideals of complete graphs, arise as toppling ideals of pargraphs. We provide sufficient conditions under which the toppling ideal of a pargraph to be toric. In addition, we construct a Gröbner basis for the toppling ideal, a minimal cellular free resolution for a distinguished initial ideal known as the $G$-parking function ideal, and establish Cohen-Macaulay property for these ideals. We also study the Picard group of a pargraph and provide sufficient conditions ensuring its freeness.

Independence Polynomials of graphs and degree of $h$-polynomials of edge ideals
Let $G = (V, E)$ be a finite simple graph. In this paper, we characterize the degree of the $h$-polynomial of the edge ideal of $G$ in terms of the independence number of $G$. The key tools are the value of the independence polynomial of $G$ at $-1$ and its derivative. Using this approach, we obtain, in particular, combinatorial formulas for the degree of the $h$-polynomial of paths, cycles, bipartite graphs, Cameron-Walker graphs and antiregular graphs.

Shellability in Clique-Free Complexes of Graphs
We study combinatorial and algebraic properties of $t$-clique-free complexes, a family of simplicial complexes associated with finite simple graphs that generalize the classical independence complex. For a graph $G$ and an integer $t \ge 2$, the $t$-clique-free complex $\mathsf{CF}_t(G)$ is the simplicial complex on the vertex set of $G$ whose faces are the subsets inducing no cliques of size $t$. Our main results provide sufficient conditions for shellability and related decomposability properties of $t$-clique-free complexes. In particular, we show that if $G$ is a $t$-diamond-free chordal graph (in particular, a block graph), then $\mathsf{CF}_t(G)$ is $(t-2)$-decomposable and hence shellable. We also investigate how graph modifications via clique attachments influence shellability. Generalizing earlier constructions involving whiskers and clique extensions, we introduce the following operation: given a graph $H$, a subset $S \subseteq V(H)$, and an integer $t \ge 2$, we form a graph $\operatorname{Cl}(H,S,t)$ by attaching to each vertex in $S$ a clique of size at least $t$. We prove that $\mathsf{CF}_t(H\setminus S)$ is shellable if and only if $\mathsf{CF}_t(\operatorname{Cl}(H,S,t))$ is shellable. This yields a flexible method for constructing shellable complexes, particularly when $S$ is a cycle cover. In addition, we extend the notion of clique whiskering and show that for any graph admitting a clique vertex-partition, the resulting $t$-clique whiskering produces a pure and shellable, and hence Cohen-Macaulay, $t$-clique-free complex. Finally, we establish a Fröberg-type result linking chordality and linear resolutions. We show that for any chordal graph $G$, the edge ideal of the complement $t$-clique clutter $\overline{\mathcal{CH}_t(G)}$ admits a $t$-linear resolution over any field.
Realizable (reg, deg h)-Pairs for Cover Ideals via Independence Polynomials
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $n$ vertices and set $R=\Bbbk[x_1,\dots,x_n]$, with edge ideal $I(G)$ and cover ideal $J(G)$. We give an explicit description of the $h$-polynomial of $R/J(G)$, in a form that extends to the Alexander dual of any squarefree monomial ideal. We then express $\textrm{deg } h_{R/I(G)}(t)$ and $\textrm{deg } h_{R/J(G)}(t)$ in terms of the independence polynomial $P_G(x)=\sum_{i\ge 0} g_i x^i$ via an invariant $M(G)$, the multiplicity of $x=-1$ as a root of $P_G(x)$. In particular, we prove \[\textrm{deg } h_{R/I(G)}(t)=α(G)-M(G) \qquad\text{and}\qquad \textrm{deg } h_{R/J(G)}(t)=n-2-M(G), \] where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. As a corollary, $M(G)$ is the additive inverse of the $\mathfrak{a}$-invariants of $R/I(G)$ and $R/J(G)$. We develop recursions and closed formulas for $M(G)$ for broad graph families, and use them to analyze which (reg, deg h)-pairs occur for cover ideals within chordal classes, including explicit constructions realizing extremal behavior. We conclude with a conjectural bound on $\left|\textrm{reg }(R/J(G))-\textrm{deg } h_{R/J(G)}(t)\right|$ for connected graphs.

Generalized binomial edge ideals of whisker graphs via an extension of generalized corona products
In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of generalized binomial edge ideals of whisker graphs by working within a substantially broader class of graphs. We extend the notion of generalized corona products, and through this enlarged framework, investigate fundamental algebraic invariants such as depth, (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity, and the Cohen-Macaulay property. In particular, we establish a sharp lower bound on the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals for our extended class, and further obtain explicit depth formula for a broad subclass of this family, which in turn recovers the depth formula for whisker graphs. We also establish sharp upper bounds for the regularity, and in the case of binomial edge ideals of whisker graphs over gap-free graphs, determine the exact value of the regularity. Finally, for our extended class, we provide a combinatorial classification of all Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, which in turn yields a new construction of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals.
Constructing Koszul filtrations: existence and non-existence for G-quadratic algebras
Given a standard graded algebra over a field, we consider the relationship between G-quadraticity and the existence of a Koszul filtration. We show that having a quadratic Gröbner basis implies the existence of a Koszul filtration for toric algebras equipped with the degree reverse lexicographic term order and for algebras defined by binomial edge ideals. We also resolve a conjecture of Ene, Herzog, and Hibi by constructing an example where this implication fails. These results are underpinned by algorithms we develop for constructing Koszul filtrations. We also demonstrate the utility of these algorithms on the pinched Veronese algebra.

Characterization of Some Graphs Realizing Regularity Bounds for Binomial Edge Ideals
In this paper, we characterize all graphs $G$ satisfying \[\operatorname{reg}(S/J_G)=\ell(G)=c(G)\] where $\ell(G)$ is the sum of the lengths of the longest induced paths in each connected component of $G$ and $c(G)$ is the number of the maximal cliques of $G$. We also characterize all connected graphs $G$ that satisfy \[\operatorname{reg}(S/J_G)=\ell(G)=|V(G)|-ω(G)+1\] where $ω(G)$ is the clique number of $G$. Moreover, we investigate the possible values of the regularity of $S/J_G$ within the intervals $[\ell(G), c(G)]$ and $[\ell(G), |V(G)|-ω(G)+1]$.
Koszul Binomial Edge Ideals
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma , Volume 14 , 2026 , e3 • View PublicationBIB
As the binomial edge ideal of a graph is always generated by homogeneous quadratic polynomials corresponding to the edges of the graph, the question of when a binomial edge ideal defines a Koszul algebra has been studied by many authors ever since the class of ideals was first defined. Several partial results are known, including a characterization of those binomial edge ideals that possess a quadratic Gröbner basis. However, a complete characterization of the graphs determining Koszul binomial edge ideals has remained elusive. Inspired by our recent work characterizing when the graded Möbius algebras of graphic matroids are Koszul, we answer the question once and for all by proving that a graph defines a Koszul binomial edge ideal if and only if it is strongly chordal and claw-free.
Linear strands of powers of certain binomial edge ideals
We provide a closed formula for the graded Betti numbers in the linear strands of all powers of binomial edge ideals $J_G$ arising from closed graphs $G$ that do not have the complete graph $K_4$ as an induced subgraph. We show that these agree with the corresponding Betti numbers for the powers of the lexicographic initial ideal of $J_G$, thereby confirming a conjecture of Ene--Rinaldo--Terai in a special case.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of generalized binomial edge ideals of graphs
In this paper, we mainly study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the generalized binomial edge ideals of graphs. We show that this number can be any integer number from $2$ to $n-1$ where $n$ is the number of vertices in the underlying graph. We are able to show this, after giving some tight lower and upper bounds for the regularity of generalized binomial edge ideals of the join product of graphs. In particular, we characterize all generalized binomial edge ideals with the regularity equal to~$2$ as well as extremal Gorenstein ideals. For this purpose, we give a new combinatorial characterization for the class of $P_4$-free graphs.

Generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels
Binomial edge ideals associated to a simple graph G were introduced by Herzog and collaborators and, independently, by Ohtani. They became an ``instant classic" in combinatorial commutative algebra with more than 100 papers devoted to their investigation over the past 15 years. They exhibit many striking properties, including being radical and, moreover, Cartwright-Sturmfels. Using the fact that binomial edge ideals can be seen as ideals of 2-minors of a matrix of variables with two rows, generalized binomial edge ideals of 2-minors of matrices of m rows were introduced by Rauh and proved to be radical. The goal of this paper is to prove that generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels. On the way we provide results on ideal constructions preserving the Cartwright-Sturmfels property. We also give examples and counterexamples to the Cartwright-Sturmfels property for higher minors.

Chromatic numbers from edge ideals: Graph classes with vanishing syzygies are polynomially $χ$-bounded
The chromatic number $χ$ of a graph is bounded from below by its clique number $ω,$ but it can be arbitrary large. Perfect graphs are defined by $χ=ω$ for all induced subgraphs. An interesting relaxation are $χ$-bounded graph classes, where $χ\leq f(ω).$ It is not always possible to achieve this with a polynomial $f.$ The edge ideal $I_G$ of a graph $G$ is generated by monomials $x_ux_v$ for each edge $uv$ of $G.$ The bi-graded betti numbers $β_{i,j}(I)$ are central algebraic geometric invariants. We study the graph classes where for some fixed $i,j$ that syzygy vanishes, that is, $β_{i,j}(I_G)=0.$ We prove that $χ\leq f(ω),$ where $f$ is a polynomial of degree $2j-2i-4.$ For the elementary special case $β_{i,2i+2}(I_G)=0,$ this amounts to that $(i+1)K_2$-free graphs are ${ω-1+2i \choose 2i}$-colorable, improving on an old combinatorial result by Wagon. We also show that triangle-free graphs with $β_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ are $(j-1)$-colorable. Complexity wise, we show that these colorings can be derived in time $O(n^3)$ for graphs on $n$ vertices. Moreover, we show that for almost all graphs with parabolic $i,j,$ there are better bounds on $χ.$

Persistent commutative algebra on graphs and hypergraphs
We introduce a persistent commutative algebra for studying the algebraic and combinatorial evolution of edge ideals of graphs and hypergraphs under filtration. Building on the Persistent Stanley--Reisner Theory (PSRT), we develop the notion of persistent edge ideals and analyze their graded Betti numbers across the filtration of graphs or hypergraphs. To enable this analysis, we establish a persistent extension of Hochster's formula, providing a functorial correspondence between algebraic and topological persistence. We further examine the behavior of Betti splittings in the persistent setting, proving a general inequality that extends the classical splitting result to the filtration of monomial ideals. Motivated by graph-theoretic interpretations, we introduce persistent minimal vertex covers, which encode the temporal structure of combinatorial dependencies within evolving graphs or hypergraphs. Applications to alignment-free genomic classification and molecular isomer discrimination demonstrate the interpretability and representatbility of persistent edge ideals as algebraic invariants, bridging combinatorial commutative algebra and data science.

Bounded powers of edge ideals: Pseudo-Gorenstein and Level polytopes
A lattice polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ of dimension $n$ is called level* if (i) $\mathcal{P}$ is normal, (ii) $(\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^n \neq \emptyset$ and (iii) for each $N = 2,3, \ldots$ and for each $\textbf{a} \in N(\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^n$, there is $\textbf{a}_0 \in (\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^n$ together with $\textbf{a}' \in (N-1)\mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{Z}^n$ for which $\textbf{a} = \textbf{a}_0 + \textbf{a}'$, where $N\mathcal{P} = \{N\textbf{a} : \textbf{a} \in \mathcal{P}\}$. A normal polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ of dimension $n$ is called pseudo-Gorenstein* [4] if $ |(\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^n| = 1. $ A pseudo-Gorenstein* polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is level* if and only if $\mathcal{P}$ is reflexive up to translation. In the present paper, level* polytopes together with pseudo-Gorenstein* polytopes arising from discrete polymatroids of bounded powers of edge ideals are studied.

Scarf complexes of connected and path ideals
The $t$-connected ideal of a graph $G$ is generated by all connected induced subgraphs of $G$ with $t$ vertices. When $t = 2$, this coincides with the usual edge ideal of the graph. Following the work of Faridi et al., we give a classification of the graphs whose $t$-connected ideals are minimally resolved by their Scarf complex. We also consider the $t$-path ideal of a graph $G$ which is the ideal generated by all paths of length $t$ in $G$. In this case, we are able to give a classification of the same type for paths of length $t = 4$.
Hilbert Coefficients and Regularity of Binomial Edge Ideals
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices, and let $J_G$ denotes the corresponding binomial edge ideal in $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n,y_1,\ldots,y_n]$, where $\mathbb{K}$ is a field. We show that if a vertex satisfies a certain degree condition, then some Hilbert coefficients remain unchanged upon its removal, thereby providing a reduction technique for computing Hilbert coefficients. As an application, for any $i\geq 0$ and a pair $(r,s)$ with $r\geq 2, s\in \mathbb{Z}$, we show that there always exists a graph $G$ such that $\mathrm{reg}(S/J_G)=r$ and $e_i(S/J_G)=s$, where $\mathrm{reg}(S/J_G)$ and $e_i(R/J_G)$ denote the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the $i$-th Hilbert coefficient of $S/J_G$, respectively. In particular, this demonstrates that there is no inherent relationship between the regularity and the Hilbert coefficients for the class of binomial edge ideals.
