Star Edge Coloring of the Cartesian Product of Graphs
A star edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring of $G$ such that every path and cycle of length four in $G$ uses at least three different colors. The star chromatic index of a graph $G$, is the smallest integer $k$ for which $G$ admits a star edge coloring with $k$ colors. In this paper, we first obtain some upper bounds for the star chromatic index of the Cartesian product of two graphs. We then determine the exact value of the star chromatic index of $2$-dimensional grids. We also obtain some upper bounds on the star chromatic index of the Cartesian product of a path with a cycle, $d$-dimensional grids, $d$-dimensional hypercubes and $d$-dimensional toroidal grids, for every positive integer $d$.

Optimal bounds on codes for location in circulant graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Identifying and locating-dominating codes have been studied widely in circulant graphs of type $C_n(1,2,3,\dots, r)$ over the recent years. In 2013, Ghebleh and Niepel studied locating-dominating and identifying codes in the circulant graphs $C_n(1,d)$ for $d=3$ and proposed as an open question the case of $d > 3$. In this paper we study identifying, locating-dominating and self-identifying codes in the graphs $C_n(1,d)$, $C_n(1,d-1,d)$ and $C_n(1,d-1,d,d+1)$. We give a new method to study lower bounds for these three codes in the circulant graphs using suitable grids. Moreover, we show that these bounds are attained for infinitely many parameters $n$ and $d$. In addition, new approaches are provided which give the exact values for the optimal self-identifying codes in $C_n(1,3)$ and $C_n(1,4).$
Anti-van der Waerden numbers on Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper arithmetic progressions on the integers and the integers modulo n are extended to graphs. This allows for the definition of the anti-van der Waerden number of a graph. Much of the focus of this paper is on 3-term arithmetic progressions for which general bounds are obtained based on the radius and diameter of a graph. The general bounds are improved for trees and Cartesian products and exact values are determined for some classes of graphs. Larger k-term arithmetic progressions are considered and a connection between the Ramsey number of paths and the anti-van der Waerden number of graphs is established.

Switching and partially switching the hypercube while maintaining perfect state transfer
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is said to exhibit perfect state transfer (PST) if one of its corresponding Hamiltonian matrices, which are based on the vertex-edge structure of the graph, gives rise to PST in a quantum information-theoretic context, namely with respect to inter-qubit interactions of a quantum system. We perform various perturbations to the hypercube graph---a graph that is known to exhibit PST---to create graphs that maintain many of the same properties of the hypercube, including PST as well as the distance for which PST occurs. We show that the sensitivity with respect to readout time errors remains unaffected for the vertices involved in PST. We give motivation for when these perturbations may be physically desirable or even necessary.

On The Circular Altitude of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Peter Cameron introduced the concept of the circular altitude of graphs; a parameter which was shown by Bamberg et al. that provides a lower bound on the circular chromatic number. In this note, we investigate this parameter and show that the circular altitude of a graph is equal to the maximum of circular altitudes of its blocks. Also, we show that homomorphically equivalent graphs have the same circular altitudes. Finally, we prove that the circular altitude of the Cartesian product of two graphs is equal to the maximum of circular altitudes of its factors.

Anagram-Free Chromatic Number is not Pathwidth-Bounded
Published • View Publication • BIB
The anagram-free chromatic number is a new graph parameter introduced independently Kamčev, Łuczak, and Sudakov (2017) and Wilson and Wood (2017). In this note, we show that there are planar graphs of pathwidth 3 with arbitrarily large anagram-free chromatic number. More specifically, we describe $2n$-vertex planar graphs of pathwidth 3 with anagram-free chromatic number $Ω(\log n)$. We also describe $kn$ vertex graphs with pathwidth $2k-1$ having anagram-free chromatic number in $Ω(k\log n)$.

About chromatic uniqueness of some complete tripartite graphs
Published in Sib. Elektron. Mat. Izv., 14 (2017), 1492 --- 1504. (Russian, English Abstract) • Search Publication
Let $P(G, x)$ be the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$. A graph $G$ is called \textit{chromatically unique} if for any graph $H,\, P(G, x) = P(H, x)$ implies that $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic. In this paper we show that full tripartite graph $K(n_1, n_2, n_3)$ is chromatically unique if $n_1 \geq n_2 \geq n_2 \geq n_3 \geq 2, n_1 - n_3 \leq 5$ and $n_1 + n_2 + n_3 \not \equiv 2 \mod{3}$.

Some sharp results on the generalized Turán numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
For graphs $T, H$, let $ex(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. In this paper we prove some sharp results on this generalization of Turán numbers, where our focus is for the graphs $T,H$ satisfying $χ(T)<χ(H)$. This can be dated back to Erdős, where he generalized the celebrated Turán's theorem by showing that for any $r\geq m$, the Turán graph $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,K_{r+1})$. For general graphs $H$ with $χ(H)=r+1>m$, Alon and Shikhelman showed that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+o(n^m)$. Here we determine this error term $o(n^m)$ up to a constant factor. We prove that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+biex(n,H)\cdotΘ(n^{m-2})$, where $biex(n,H)$ is the Turán number of the decomposition family of $H$. As a special case, we extend Erdős' result, by showing that $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,H)$ for any edge-critical graph $H$. We also consider $T$ being non-clique, where even the simplest case seems to be intricate. Following from a more general result, we show that for all $s\leq t$, $T_2(n)$ maximizes the number of $K_{s,t}$ in $n$-vertex triangle-free graphs if and only if $t<s+\frac12+\sqrt{2s+\frac14}$.

Multicoloring of Graphs to Secure a Secret
Vertex coloring and multicoloring of graphs are a well known subject in graph theory, as well as their applications. In vertex multicoloring, each vertex is assigned some subset of a given set of colors. Here we propose a new kind of vertex multicoloring, motivated by the situation of sharing a secret and securing it from the actions of some number of attackers. We name the multicoloring a highly $a$-resistant vertex $k$-multicoloring, where $a$ is the number of the attackers, and $k$ the number of colors. For small values $a$ we determine what is the minimal number of vertices a graph must have in order to allow such a coloring, and what is the minimal number of colors needed.

On coset leader graphs of structured linear codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We suggest a new approach to obtain bounds on locally correctable and some locally testable binary linear codes, by arguing that these codes (or their subcodes) have coset leader graphs with high discrete Ricci curvature. The bounds we obtain for locally correctable codes are worse than the best known bounds obtained using quantum information theory, but are better than those obtained using other methods, such as the "usual" information theory. (We remark that our methods are completely elementary.) The bounds we obtain for a family of locally testable codes improve the best known bounds.

On Quadratic Embedding Constants of Star Product Graphs
A connected graph $G$ is of QE class if it admits a quadratic embedding in a Hilbert space, or equivalently if the distance matrix is conditionally negative definite, or equivalently if the quadratic embedding constant $\mathrm{QEC}(G)$ is non-positive. For a finite star product of (finite or infinite) graphs $G=G_1\star\dotsb \star G_r$ an estimate of $\mathrm{QEC}(G)$ is obtained after a detailed analysis of the minimal solution of a certain algebraic equation. For the path graph $P_n$ an implicit formula for $\mathrm{QEC}(P_n)$ is derived, and by limit argument $\mathrm{QEC}(\mathbb{Z})=\mathrm{QEC}(\mathbb{Z}_+)=-1/2$ is shown. During the discussion a new integer sequence is found.

Combinatorial proofs for identities related to generalizations of the mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$
Published in The Ramanujan Journal, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
The two partition functions $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ were introduced by Andrews, Dixit and Yee, which are related to the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$, respectively. Recently, Andrews and Yee analytically studied two identities that connect the refinements of $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ with the generalized bivariate mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$, respectively. However, they stated these identities cried out for bijective proofs. In this paper, we first define the generalized trivariate mock theta functions $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$. Then by utilizing odd Ferrers graph, we obtain certain identities concerning to $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$, which extend some early results of Andrews that are related to $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$. In virtue of the combinatorial interpretations that arise from the identities involving $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$, we finally present bijective proofs for the two identities of Andrews-Yee.

Asymptotic behavior of lifetime sums for random simplicial complex processes
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan, Vol. 71, No.3 (2019), 765-804 • View Publication • BIB
We study the homological properties of random simplicial complexes. In particular, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of lifetime sums for a class of increasing random simplicial complexes; this result is a higher-dimensional counterpart of Frieze's $ζ(3)$-limit theorem for the Erdős-Rényi graph process. The main results include solutions to questions posed in an earlier study by Hiraoka and Shirai about the Linial-Meshulam complex process and the random clique complex process. One of the key elements of the arguments is a new upper bound on the Betti numbers of general simplicial complexes in terms of the number of small eigenvalues of Laplacians on links. This bound can be regarded as a quantitative version of the cohomology vanishing theorem.

On the complexity of the outer-connected bondage and the outer-connected reinforcement problems
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. A subset $S \subseteq V$ is a dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. A set $\tilde{D} \subseteq V$ of a graph $G=(V,E) $ is called an outer-connected dominating set for $G$ if (1) $\tilde{D}$ is a dominating set for $G$, and (2) $G [V \setminus \tilde{D}]$, the induced subgraph of $G$ by $V \setminus \tilde{D}$, is connected. The minimum size among all outer-connected dominating sets of $G$ is called the outer-connected domination number of $G$ and is denoted by $\tildeγ_c(G)$. We define the outer-connected bondage number of a graph $G$ as the minimum number of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with an outer-connected domination number larger than the one for $G$. Also, the outer-connected reinforcement number of a graph $G$ is defined as the minimum number of edges whose addition to $G$ results in a graph with an outer-connected domination number, which is smaller than the one for $G$. This paper shows that the decision problems for the outer-connected bondage and the outer-connected reinforcement numbers are $\mathbf{NP}$-hard. Also, the exact values of the bondage number are determined for several classes of graphs.
A version of the Loebl-Komlós-Sós conjecture for skewed trees
Loebl, Komlós, and Sós conjectured that any graph with at least half of its vertices of degree at least k contains every tree with at most k edges. We propose a version of this conjecture for skewed trees, i.e., we consider the class of trees with at most k edges such that the sizes of the colour classes of the trees have a given ratio. We show that our conjecture is asymptotically correct for dense graphs. The proof relies on the regularity method. Our result implies bounds on Ramsey number of several trees of given skew.

Some Ulam's reconstruction problems for quantum states
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 51 435301 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
Provided a complete set of putative $k$-body reductions of a multipartite quantum state, can one determine if a joint state exists? We derive necessary conditions for this to be true. In contrast to what is known as the quantum marginal problem, we consider a setting where the labeling of the subsystems is unknown. The problem can be seen in analogy to Ulam's reconstruction conjecture in graph theory. The conjecture - still unsolved - claims that every graph on at least three vertices can uniquely be reconstructed from the set of its vertex-deleted subgraphs. When considering quantum states, we demonstrate that the non-existence of joint states can, in some cases, already be inferred from a set of marginals having the size of just more than half of the parties. We apply these methods to graph states, where many constraints can be evaluated by knowing the number of stabilizer elements of certain weights that appear in the reductions. This perspective links with constraints that were derived in the context of quantum error-correcting codes and polynomial invariants. Some of these constraints can be interpreted as monogamy-like relations that limit the correlations arising from quantum states. Lastly, we provide an answer to Ulam's reconstruction problem for generic quantum states.

Stirling Numbers in Braid Matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Restricted Whitney numbers of the first kind appear in the combinatorial recursion for the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In the special case of braid matroids (the matroid associated to the partition lattice, the complete graph, the type A Coxeter arrangement and the symmetric group) these restricted Whitney numbers are Stirling numbers of the first kind. We use this observation to obtain a formula for the coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for braid matroids in terms of sums of products of Stirling numbers of the first kind. This results in new identities between Stirling numbers of the first kind and Stirling numbers of the second kind, as well as a non-recursive formula for the braid matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Total perfect codes in graphs realized by commutative rings
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity not equal to zero and let $Γ(R)$ be a zero-divisor graph realized by $R$. For a simple, undirected, connected graph $G = (V, E)$, a {\it total perfect code} denoted by $C(G)$ in $G$ is a subset $C(G) \subseteq V(G)$ such that $|N(v) \cap C(G)| = 1$ for all $v \in V(G)$, where $N(v)$ denotes the open neighbourhood of a vertex $v$ in $G$. In this paper, we study total perfect codes in graphs which are realized as zero-divisor graphs. We show a zero-divisor graph realized by a local commutative ring with unity admits a total perfect code if and only if the graph has degree one vertices. We also show that if $Γ(R)$ is a regular graph on $|Z^*(R)|$ vertices, then $R$ is a reduced ring and $|Z^*(R)| \equiv 0(mod ~2)$, where $Z^*(R)$ is a set of non-zero zero-divisors of $R$. We provide a characterization for all commutative rings with unity of which the realized zero-divisor graphs admit total perfect codes. Finally, we determine the cardinality of a total perfect code in $Γ(R)$ and discuss the significance of the study of total perfect codes in graphs realized by commutative rings with unity.
