On indicated coloring of some classes of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Indicated coloring is a type of game coloring in which two players collectively color the vertices of a graph in the following way. In each round the first player (Ann) selects a vertex, and then the second player (Ben) colors it properly, using a fixed set of colors. The goal of Ann is to achieve a proper coloring of the whole graph, while Ben is trying to prevent the realization of this project. The smallest number of colors necessary for Ann to win the game on a graph $G$ (regardless of Ben's strategy) is called the indicated chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $χ_i(G)$. In this paper, we obtain structural characterization of connected $\{P_5,K_4,Kite,Bull\}$-free graphs which contains an induced $C_5$ and connected $\{P_6,C_5, K_{1,3}\}$-free graphs that contains an induced $C_6$. Also, we prove that $\{P_5,K_4,Kite,Bull\}$-free graphs that contains an induced $C_5$ and $\{P_6,C_5,\overline{P_5}, K_{1,3}\}$-free graphs which contains an induced $C_6$ are $k$-indicated colorable for all $k\geqχ(G)$. In addition, we show that $\mathbb{K}[C_5]$ is $k$-indicated colorable for all $k\geqχ(G)$ and as a consequence, we exhibit that $\{P_2\cup P_3, C_4\}$-free graphs, $\{P_5,C_4\}$-free graphs are $k$-indicated colorable for all $k\geqχ(G)$. This partially answers one of the questions which was raised by A. Grzesik in \cite{and}.

How many randomly colored edges make a randomly colored dense graph rainbow hamiltonian or rainbow connected?
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the randomly edge colored graph that is obtained by adding randomly colored random edges to an arbitrary randomly edge colored dense graph. In particular we ask how many colors and how many random edges are needed so that the resultant graph contains a fixed number of edge disjoint rainbow Hamilton cycles. We also ask when in the resultant graph every pair of vertices is connected by a rainbow path.

Twists and Twistability
Published • View Publication • BIB
Metrically homogeneous graphs are connected graphs which, when endowed with the path metric, are homogeneous as metric spaces. In this paper we introduce the concept of twisted automorphisms, a notion of isomorphism up to a permutation of the language. We find all permutations of the language which are associated with twisted automorphisms of metrically homogeneous graphs. For each non-trivial permutation of this type we also characterize the class of metrically homogeneous graphs which allow a twisted isomorphism associated with that permutation. The permutations we find are, remarkably, precisely those found by Bannai and Bannai in an analogous result in the context of finite association schemes.

On a fractional version of Haemers' bound
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we present a fractional version of Haemers' bound on the Shannon capacity of a graph, which is originally due to Blasiak. This bound is a common strengthening of both Haemers' bound and the fractional chromatic number of a graph. We show that this fractional version outperforms any bound on the Shannon capacity that could be attained through Haemers' bound. We show also that this bound is multiplicative, unlike Haemers' bound.
On the computability of graphons
We investigate the relative computability of exchangeable binary relational data when presented in terms of the distribution of an invariant measure on graphs, or as a graphon in either $L^1$ or the cut distance. We establish basic computable equivalences, and show that $L^1$ representations contain fundamentally more computable information than the other representations, but that $0'$ suffices to move between computable such representations. We show that $0'$ is necessary in general, but that in the case of random-free graphons, no oracle is necessary. We also provide an example of an $L^1$-computable random-free graphon that is not weakly isomorphic to any graphon with an a.e. continuous version.

Irreducible 4-critical triangle-free toroidal graphs
The theory of Dvorak, Kral, and Thomas (2015) shows that a 4-critical triangle-free graph embedded in the torus has only a bounded number of faces of length greater than 4 and that the size of these faces is also bounded. We study the natural reduction in such embedded graphs - identification of opposite vertices in 4-faces. We give a computer-assisted argument showing that there are exactly four 4-critical triangle-free irreducible toroidal graphs in which this reduction cannot be applied without creating a triangle. Using this result, we show that every 4-critical triangle-free graph embedded in the torus has at most four 5-faces, or a 6-face and two 5-faces, or a 7-face and a 5-face, in addition to at least seven 4-faces. This result serves as a basis for the exact description of $4$-critical triangle-free toroidal graphs, which we present in a followup paper.

Minimal toughness in special graph classes
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 25:3 special issue ICGT'22, Special issues (November 22, 2023) dmtcs:10180 • View Publication • BIB
Let $t$ be a positive real number. A graph is called $t$-tough if the removal of any vertex set $S$ that disconnects the graph leaves at most $|S|/t$ components, and all graphs are considered 0-tough. The toughness of a graph is the largest $t$ for which the graph is $t$-tough, whereby the toughness of complete graphs is defined as infinity. A graph is minimally $t$-tough if the toughness of the graph is $t$, and the deletion of any edge from the graph decreases the toughness. In this paper, we investigate the minimum degree and the recognizability of minimally $t$-tough graphs in the classes of chordal graphs, split graphs, claw-free graphs, and $2K_2$-free graphs.
Subgraph counts for dense random graphs with specified degrees
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 30 (2021) 460-497 • View Publication • BIB
We prove two estimates for the expectation of the exponential of a complex function of a random permutation or subset. Using this theory, we find asymptotic expressions for the expected number of copies and induced copies of a given graph in a uniformly random graph with degree sequence $(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. We also determine the expected number of spanning trees in this model. The range of degrees covered includes $d_j = λn + O(n^{1/2+\varepsilon})$ for some $λ$ bounded away from $0$ and $1$.

An infinite family of subcubic graphs with unbounded packing chromatic number
Recently, Balogh, Kostochka and Liu in [Packing chromatic number of cubic graphs, Discrete Math.~341 (2018) 474--483] answered in negative the question that was posed in several earlier papers whether the packing chromatic number is bounded in the class of graphs with maximum degree $3$. In this note, we present an explicit infinite family of subcubic graphs with unbounded packing chromatic number.

Extensions of Erdős-Gallai Theorem and Luo's Theorem with Applications
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing (2020), 29, pp. 128-136 • View Publication • BIB
The famous Erdős-Gallai Theorem on the Turán number of paths states that every graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges contains a path with at least $\frac{2m}{n}$ edges. In this note, we first establish a simple but novel extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem by proving that every graph $G$ contains a path with at least $\frac{(s+1)N_{s+1}(G)}{N_{s}(G)}+s-1$ edges, where $N_j(G)$ denotes the number of $j$-cliques in $G$ for $1\leq j\leqω(G)$. We also construct a family of graphs which shows our extension improves the estimate given by Erdős-Gallai Theorem. Among applications, we show, for example, that the main results of \cite{L17}, which are on the maximum possible number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex graph without a path with $l$ vertices (and without cycles of length at least $c$), can be easily deduced from this extension. Indeed, to prove these results, Luo \cite{L17} generalized a classical theorem of Kopylov and established a tight upper bound on the number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex 2-connected graph with circumference less than $c$. We prove a similar result for an $n$-vertex 2-connected graph with circumference less than $c$ and large minimum degree. We conclude this paper with an application of our results to a problem from spectral extremal graph theory on consecutive lengths of cycles in graphs.

Graph limits of random unlabelled $k$-trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study random unlabelled $k$-dimensional trees by combining the colouring approach by Gainer-Dewar and Gessel (2014) with the cycle pointing method by Bodirsky, Fusy, Kang and Vigerske (2011). Our main applications are Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov and Benjamini-Schramm limits, that describe their asymptotic geometric shape on a global and local scale as the number of hedra tends to infinity.

Long scale Ollivier-Ricci curvature of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the long scale Ollivier-Ricci curvature of graphs as a function of the chosen idleness. As in the previous work on the short scale, we show that this idleness function is concave and piecewise linear with at most $3$ linear parts. We provide bounds on the length of the first and last linear pieces. We also study the long scale curvature inside the Cartesian product of two regular graphs.
Curvature calculations for antitrees
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we prove that antitrees with suitable growth properties are examples of infinite graphs exhibiting strictly positive curvature in various contexts: in the normalized and non-normalized Bakry-Émery setting as well in the Ollivier-Ricci curvature case. We also show that these graphs do not have global positive lower curvature bounds, which one would expect in view of discrete analogues of the Bonnet-Myers theorem. The proofs in the different settings require different techniques.
Quantum Fractional Revival on Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fractional revival is a quantum transport phenomenon important for entanglement generation in spin networks. This takes place whenever a continuous-time quantum walk maps the characteristic vector of a vertex to a superposition of the characteristic vectors of a subset of vertices containing the initial vertex. A main focus will be on the case when the subset has two vertices. We explore necessary and sufficient spectral conditions for graphs to exhibit fractional revival. This provides a characterization of fractional revival in paths and cycles. Our work builds upon the algebraic machinery developed for related quantum transport phenomena such as state transfer and mixing, and it reveals a fundamental connection between them.

Earthmover Resilience and Testing in Ordered Structures
One of the main challenges in property testing is to characterize those properties that are testable with a constant number of queries. For unordered structures such as graphs and hypergraphs this task has been mostly settled. However, for ordered structures such as strings, images, and ordered graphs, the characterization problem seems very difficult in general. In this paper, we identify a wide class of properties of ordered structures - the earthmover resilient (ER) properties - and show that the "good behavior" of such properties allows us to obtain general testability results that are similar to (and more general than) those of unordered graphs. A property P is ER if, roughly speaking, slight changes in the order of the elements in an object satisfying P cannot make this object far from P. The class of ER properties includes, e.g., all unordered graph properties, many natural visual properties of images, such as convexity, and all hereditary properties of ordered graphs and images. A special case of our results implies, building on a recent result of Alon and the authors, that the distance of a given image or ordered graph from any hereditary property can be estimated (with good probability) up to a constant additive error, using a constant number of queries.

A Notion of Total Dual Integrality for Convex, Semidefinite, and Extended Formulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Total dual integrality is a powerful and unifying concept in polyhedral combinatorics and integer programming that enables the refinement of geometric min-max relations given by linear programming Strong Duality into combinatorial min-max theorems. The definition of total dual integrality (TDI) revolves around the existence of optimal dual solutions that are integral, and thus naturally applies to a host of combinatorial optimization problems that are cast as integer programs whose LP relaxations have the TDIness property. However, when combinatorial problems are formulated using more general convex relaxations, such as semidefinite programs (SDPs), it is not at all clear what an appropriate notion of integrality in the dual program is, thus inhibiting the generalization of the theory to more general forms of structured convex optimization. (In fact, we argue that the rank-one constraint usually added to SDP relaxations is not adequate in the dual SDP.) In this paper, we propose a notion of total dual integrality for SDPs that generalizes the notion for LPs, by relying on an "integrality constraint" for SDPs that is primal-dual symmetric. A key ingredient for the theory is a generalization to compact convex sets of a result of Hoffman for polytopes, fundamental for generalizing the polyhedral notion of total dual integrality introduced by Edmonds and Giles. We study the corresponding theory applied to SDP formulations for stable sets in graphs using the Lovász theta function and show that total dual integrality in this case corresponds to the underlying graph being perfect. We also relate dual integrality of an SDP formulation for the maximum cut problem to bipartite graphs. Total dual integrality for extended formulations naturally comes into play in this context.

The Zarankiewicz problem in 3-partite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F$ be a graph, $k \geq 2$ be an integer, and write $\mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq k } (n , F)$ for the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that is $k$-partite and has no subgraph isomorphic to $F$. The function $\mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq 2} ( n , F)$ has been studied by many researchers. Finding $\mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq 2} (n , K_{s,t})$ is a special case of the Zarankiewicz problem. We prove an analogue of the Kövári-Sós-Turán Theorem for 3-partite graphs by showing \[ \mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq 3} (n , K_{s,t} ) \leq \left( \frac{1}{3} \right)^{1 - 1/s} \left( \frac{ t - 1}{2} + o(1) \right)^{1/s} n^{2 - 1/s} \] for $2 \leq s \leq t$. Using Sidon sets constructed by Bose and Chowla, we prove that this upper bound is asymptotically best possible in the case that $s = 2$ and $t \geq 3$ is odd, i.e., $\mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq 3} ( n , K_{2,2t+1} ) = \sqrt{ \frac{t}{3}} n^{3/2} + o(n^{3/2})$ for $t \geq 1$. In the cases of $K_{2,t}$ and $K_{3,3}$, we use a result of Allen, Keevash, Sudakov, and Verstraëte, to show that a similar upper bound holds for all $k \geq 3$, and gives a better constant when $s=t=3$. Lastly, we point out an interesting connection between difference families from design theory and $\mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq 3 } (n ,C_4)$.

Absolutely split metacyclic groups and weak metacirculants
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $m,n,r$ be positive integers, and let $G=\langle a\rangle: \langle b\rangle \cong \mathbb{Z}_n: \mathbb{Z}_m$ be a split metacyclic group such that $b^{-1}ab=a^r$. We say that $G$ is {\em absolutely split with respect to $\langle a\rangle$} provided that for any $x\in G$, if $\langle x\rangle\cap\langle a\rangle=1$, then there exists $y\in G$ such that $x\in\langle y\rangle$ and $G=\langle a\rangle: \langle y\rangle$. In this paper, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the group $G$ being absolutely split. This generalizes a result of Sanming Zhou and the second author in [arXiv: 1611.06264v1]. We also use this result to investigate the relationship between metacirculants and weak metacirculants. Metacirculants were introduced by Alspach and Parsons in $1982$ and have been a rich source of various topics since then. As a generalization of this classes of graphs, Maru\v si\v c and \v Sparl in 2008 posed the so called weak metacirculants. A graph is called a {\em weak metacirculant} if it has a vertex-transitive metacyclic automorphism group. In this paper, it is proved that a weak metacirculant of $2$-power order is a metacirculant if and only if it has a vertex-transitive split metacyclic automorphism group. This provides a partial answer to an open question in the literature.

Vaccinate your trees!
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$ and an integer-valued function $τ$ on its vertex set, a dynamic monopoly is a set of vertices of $G$ such that iteratively adding to it vertices $u$ of $G$ that have at least $τ(u)$ neighbors in it eventually yields the vertex set of $G$. We study two vaccination problems, where the goal is to maximize the minimum order of such a dynamic monopoly either by increasing the threshold value of $b$ vertices beyond their degree, or by removing $b$ vertices from $G$, where $b$ is a given non-negative integer corresponding to a budget. We show how to solve these problems efficiently for trees.

Combinatorics of One-Dimensional Simple Toeplitz Subshifts
Published in Ergod. Th. Dynam. Sys. 40 (2020) 1673-1714 • View Publication • BIB
This paper provides a systematic study of fundamental combinatorial properties of one-dimensional, two-sided infinite simple Toeplitz subshifts. Explicit formulas for the complexity function, the palindrome complexity function and the repetitivity function are proven. Moreover, a complete description of the de Bruijn graphs of the subshifts is given. Finally, the Boshernitzan condition is characterised in terms of combinatorial quantities, based on a recent result of Liu and Qu. Particular simple characterisations are provided for simple Toeplitz subshifts that correspond to the orbital Schreier graphs of the family of Grigorchuk's groups, a class of subshifts that serves as main example throughout the paper.
