Algorithm on rainbow connection for maximal outerplanar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider rainbow connection number of maximal outerplanar graphs(MOPs) on algorithmic aspect. For the (MOP) $G$, we give sufficient conditions to guarantee that $rc(G) = diam(G).$ Moreover, we produce the graph with given diameter $d$ and give their rainbow coloring in linear time. X.Deng et al. $\cite{XD}$ give a polynomial time algorithm to compute the rainbow connection number of MOPs by the Maximal fan partition method, but only obtain a compact upper bound. J. Lauri $\cite{JL}$ proved that, for chordal outerplanar graphs given an edge-coloring, to verify whether it is rainbow connected is NP-complete under the coloring, it is so for MOPs. Therefore we construct Central-cut-spine of MOP $G,$ by which we design an algorithm to give a rainbow edge coloring with at most $2rad(G)+2+c,0\leq c\leq rad(G)-2$ colors in polynomial time.

A note on the augmented Zagreb index of cacti with fixed number of vertices and cycles
Published in Kuwait J. Sci. 43(4), (2016) 11-17 • Search Publication
Let $\mathcal{C}_{n,k}$ be the family of all cacti with $k$ cycles and $n\geq4$ vertices. In the present note, the element of the class $\mathcal{C}_{n,k}$ having minimum augmented Zagreb index ($AZI$) is characterized. Moreover, some structural properties of the graph(s) having maximum $AZI$ value over the collection $\mathcal{C}_{n,0}$, are also reported.

An inertial lower bound for the chromatic number of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $χ(G$) and $χ_f(G)$ denote the chromatic and fractional chromatic numbers of a graph $G$, and let $(n^+ , n^0 , n^-)$ denote the inertia of $G$. We prove that: \[ 1 + \max\left(\frac{n^+}{n^-} , \frac{n^-}{n^+}\right) \le χ(G) \mbox{ and conjecture that } 1 + \max\left(\frac{n^+}{n^-} , \frac{n^-}{n^+}\right) \le χ_f(G) \] We investigate extremal graphs for these bounds and demonstrate that this inertial bound is not a lower bound for the vector chromatic number. We conclude with a discussion of asymmetry between $n^+$ and $n^-$, including some Nordhaus-Gaddum bounds for inertia.

A Classification of Isomorphism-Invariant Random Digraphs
We classify isomorphism-invariant random digraphs according to where randomness resides, namely, arcs, vertices, and vertices and arcs together which in turn yield arc random digraphs (ARD), vertex random digraphs (VRD) and vertex-arc random digraphs (VARD), respectively. This digraph classification can be viewed as an extension of the classification of isomorphism-invariant random graphs. We introduce randomness in the direction of the edges of a given graph and obtain direction random digraphs (DRD) as well. We classify DRDs according to which component is random in addition to the direction and study the relations of DRDs with VARDs, VRDs and ARDs. We also consider random nearest neighbor digraphs and determine their membership with respect to these digraph families.

The Gyori-Lovasz theorem
Gyori and Lovasz independently proved the following beautiful theorem. Let $k\ge2$ be an integer, let $G$ be a $k$-connected graph on $n$ vertices, let $v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_k$ be distinct vertices of $G$ and let $n_1,n_2,\ldots,n_k$ be positive integers with $n_1+n_2+\cdots+n_k=n$. Then $G$ has disjoint connected subgraphs $G_1,G_2,\ldots,G_k$ such that for $i=1,2,\ldots,k$ the graph $G_i$ has $n_i$ vertices and $v_i\in V(G_i)$. We give a self-contained exposition of Gyori's proof.
Uniform hypergraphs and dominating sets of graphs
A (simple) hypergraph is a family H of pairwise incomparable sets of a finite set. We say that a hypergraph H is a domination hypergraph if there is at least a graph G such that the collection of minimal dominating sets of G is equal to H. Given a hypergraph, we are interested in determining if it is a domination hypergraph and, if this is not the case, we want to find domination hypergraphs in some sense close to it, the domination completions. Here we will focus on the family of hypergraphs containing all the subsets with the same cardinality, the uniform hypergraphs of maximum size. Specifically, we characterize those hypergraphs H in this family that are domination hypergraphs and, in any other case, we prove that the hypergraph H is uniquely determined by some of its domination completions and that H can be recovered from them by using a suitable hypergraph operation.

Testing Equality in Communication Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected undirected graph with $k$ vertices. Suppose that on each vertex of the graph there is a player having an $n$-bit string. Each player is allowed to communicate with its neighbors according to an agreed communication protocol, and the players must decide, deterministically, if their inputs are all equal. What is the minimum possible total number of bits transmitted in a protocol solving this problem ? We determine this minimum up to a lower order additive term in many cases (but not for all graphs). In particular, we show that it is $kn/2+o(n)$ for any Hamiltonian $k$-vertex graph, and that for any $2$-edge connected graph with $m$ edges containing no two adjacent vertices of degree exceeding $2$ it is $mn/2+o(n)$. The proofs combine graph theoretic ideas with tools from additive number theory.

Colourability and word-representability of near-triangulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G = (V,E)$ is word-representable if there is a word $w$ over the alphabet $V$ such that $x$ and $y$ alternate in $w$ if and only if the edge $(x, y)$ is in $G$. It is known [6] that all $3$-colourable graphs are word-representable, while among those with a higher chromatic number some are word-representable while others are not. There has been some recent research on the word-representability of polyomino triangulations. Akrobotu et al.[1] showed that a triangulation of a convex polyomino is word-representable if and only if it is $3$-colourable; and Glen and Kitaev[5] extended this result to the case of a rectangular polyomino triangulation when a single domino tile is allowed. It was shown in [4] that a near-triangulation is $3$-colourable if and only if it is internally even. This paper provides a much shorter and more elegant proof of this fact, and also shows that near-triangulations are in fact a generalization of the polyomino triangulations studied in [1] and [5], and so we generalize the results of these two papers, and solve all open problems stated in [5].
Local symmetry in random graphs
Published in IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering 7 (2020), 1913-1924 • View Publication • BIB
Quite often real-world networks can be thought of as being symmetric, in the abstract sense that vertices can be found to have similar or equivalent structural roles. However, traditional measures of symmetry in graphs are based on their automorphism groups, which do not account for the similarity of local structures. We introduce the concept of local symmetry, which reflects the structural equivalence of the vertices' egonets. We study the emergence of asymmetry in the Erdős-Rényi random graph model and identify regimes of both asymptotic local symmetry and asymptotic local asymmetry. We find that local symmetry persists at least to an average degree of $n^{1/3}$ and local asymmetry emerges at an average degree not greater than $n^{1/2}$, which are regimes of much larger average degree than for traditional, global asymmetry.

A Generalization of the Hamilton-Waterloo Problem on Complete Equipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Hamilton-Waterloo problem asks for which $s$ and $r$ the complete graph $K_n$ can be decomposed into $s$ copies of a given 2-factor $F_1$ and $r$ copies of a given 2-factor $F_2$ (and one copy of a 1-factor if $n$ is even). In this paper we generalize the problem to complete equipartite graphs $K_{(n:m)}$ and show that $K_{(xyzw:m)}$ can be decomposed into $s$ copies of a 2-factor consisting of cycles of length $xzm$; and $r$ copies of a 2-factor consisting of cycles of length $yzm$, whenever $m$ is odd, $s,r\neq 1$, $\gcd(x,z)=\gcd(y,z)=1$ and $xyz\neq 0 \pmod 4$. We also give some more general constructions where the cycles in a given two factor may have different lengths. We use these constructions to find solutions to the Hamilton-Waterloo problem for complete graphs.

Minimal Asymmetric Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Confirming a conjecture of Nešetřil, we show that up to isomorphism there is only a finite number of finite minimal asymmetric undirected graphs. In fact, there are exactly 18 such graphs. We also show that these graphs are exactly the finite minimal involution-free graphs.

Connectivity Functions and Polymatroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
A {\em connectivity function on} a set $E$ is a function $λ:2^E\rightarrow \mathbb R$ such that $λ(\emptyset)=0$, that $λ(X)=λ(E-X)$ for all $X\subseteq E$ and that $λ(X\cap Y)+λ(X\cup Y)\leq λ(X)+λ(Y)$ for all $X,Y \subseteq E$. Graphs, matroids and, more generally, polymatroids have associated connectivity functions. We introduce a notion of duality for polymatroids and prove that every connectivity function is the connectivity function of a self-dual polymatroid. We also prove that every integral connectivity function is the connectivity function of a half-integral self-dual polymatroid.

Families of $2$-weights of some particular graphs
Let ${\cal G}=(G,w) $ be a positive-weighted graph, that is a graph $G$ endowed with a function $w$ from the edge set of $G$ to the set of positive real numbers; for any distinct vertices $i,j $, we define $D_{i,j}({\cal G})$ to be the weight of the path in $G$ joining $i$ and $j$ with minimum weight. In this paper we fix a particular class of graphs and we give a criterion to establish whether, given a family of positive real numbers $\{D_I\}_{I \in { \{1,...., n\} \choose 2}}$, there exists a positive-weighted graph ${\cal G} =(G,w) $ in the class we have fixed, with vertex set equal to $\{1,....,n\}$ and such that $D_I ({\cal G}) =D_I$ for any $I \in { \{1,...., n\} \choose 2}$. In particular, the classes of graphs we consider are the following: snakes, caterpillars, polygons, bipartite graphs, complete graphs, planar graphs.

Statistical structure of concave compositions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study concave compositions, an extension of partitions that were considered by Andrews, Rhoades, and Zwegers. They presented several open problems regarding the statistical structure of concave compositions including the distribution of the perimeter and tilt, the number of summands, and the shape of the graph of a typical concave composition. We present solutions to these problems by applying Fristedt's conditioning device on the uniform measure.
Families of Subsets Without a Given Poset in the Interval Chains
Published • View Publication • BIB
For two posets $P$ and $Q$, we say $Q$ is $P$-free if there does not exist any order-preserving injection from $P$ to $Q$. The speical case for $Q$ being the Boolean lattice $B_n$ is well-studied, and the optiamal value is denoted as $\lanp$. Let us define $\La(Q,P)$ to be the largest size of any $P$-free subposet of $Q$. In this paper, we give an upper bound for $\La(Q,P)$ when $Q$ is a double chain and $P$ is any graded poset, which is better than the previous known upper bound, by means of finding the indpendence number of an auxiliary graph related to $P$. For the auxiliary graph, we can find its independence number in polynomial time. In addition, we give methods to construct the posets satisfying the Griggs-Lu conjecture.

Bandwidth of graphs resulting from the edge clique covering problem
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 25(4) (2018) P4.49 • View Publication • BIB
Let $n,k,b$ be integers with $1 \le k-1 \le b \le n$ and let $G_{n,k,b}$ be the graph whose vertices are the $k$-element subsets $X$ of $\{0,\dots,n\}$ with $\max(X)-\min(X) \le b$ and where two such vertices $X,Y$ are joined by an edge if $\max(X \cup Y) - \min(X \cup Y) \le b$. These graphs are generated by applying a transformation to maximal $k$-uniform hypergraphs of bandwidth $b$ that is used to reduce the (weak) edge clique covering problem to a vertex clique covering problem. The bandwidth of $G_{n,k,b}$ is thus the largest possible bandwidth of any transformed $k$-uniform hypergraph of bandwidth $b$. For $b\geq \frac{n+k-1}{2}$, the exact bandwidth of these graphs is determined. For $b<\frac{n+k-1}{2}$, the bandwidth is asymptotically determined in the case of $b=o(n)$ and in the case of $b$ growing linearly in $n$ with a factor $β\in (0,0.5]$, where for one case only bounds could be found. It is conjectured that the upper bound of this open case is the right asymptotic value.

The arithmetical rank of the edge ideals of cactus graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that, for the edge ideal of a cactus graph, the arithmetical rank is bounded above by the sum of the number of cycles and the maximum height of its associated primes. The bound is sharp, but in many cases it can be improved. Moreover, we show that the edge ideal of a Cohen-Macaulay graph that contains exactly one cycle or is chordal or has no cycles of length 4 and 5 is a set-theoretic complete intersection.

Minimising the number of triangular edges

We consider the problem of minimising the number of edges that are contained in triangles, among $n$-vertex graphs with a given number of edges. We prove a conjecture of Füredi and Maleki that gives an exact formula for this minimum, for sufficiently large $n$.

Hypergraphs and hypermatrices with symmetric spectrum
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that a graph is bipartite if and only if the spectrum of its adjacency matrix is symmetric. In the present paper, this assertion is dissected into three separate matrix results of wider scope, which are extended also to hypermatrices. To this end the concept of bipartiteness is generalized by a new monotone property of cubical hypermatrices, called odd-colorable matrices. It is shown that a nonnegative symmetric $r$-matrix $A$ has a symmetric spectrum if and only if $r$ is even and $A$ is odd-colorable. This result also solves a problem of Pearson and Zhang about hypergraphs with symmetric spectrum and disproves a conjecture of Zhou, Sun, Wang, and Bu. Separately, similar results are obtained for the $H$-spectram of hypermatrices.

Symmetric Unique Neighbor Expanders and Good LDPC Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
An infinite family of bounded-degree 'unique-neighbor' expanders was constructed explicitly by Alon and Capalbo (2002). We present an infinite family F of bounded-degree unique-neighbor expanders with the additional property that every graph in the family F is a Cayley graph. This answers a question raised by Tali Kaufman. Using the same methods, we show that the symmetric LDPC codes constructed by Kaufman and Lubotzky (2012) are in fact symmetric under a simply transitive group action on coordinates.
