Published • View Publication • BIB
The number of spanning trees in a class of directed circulant graphs with generators depending linearly on the number of vertices $βn$, and in the $n$-th and $(n-1)$-th power graphs of the $βn$-cycle are evaluated as a product of $\lceilβ/2\rceil-1$ terms.

Estimation of Laplacian spectra of direct and strong product graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 205: 160-170, 2016 • View Publication • BIB
Calculating a product of multiple graphs has been studied in mathematics, engineering, computer science, and more recently in network science, particularly in the context of multilayer networks. One of the important questions to be addressed in this area is how to characterize spectral properties of a product graph using those of its factor graphs. While several such characterizations have already been obtained analytically (mostly for adjacency spectra), characterization of Laplacian spectra of direct product and strong product graphs has remained an open problem. Here we develop practical methods to estimate Laplacian spectra of direct and strong product graphs from spectral properties of their factor graphs using a few heuristic assumptions. Numerical experiments showed that the proposed methods produced reasonable estimation with percentage errors confined within a +/-10% range for most eigenvalues.
Well-Formed Separator Sequences, with an Application to Hypergraph Drawing
Given a hypergraph $H$, the Planar Support problem asks whether there is a planar graph $G$ on the same vertex set as $H$ such that each hyperedge induces a connected subgraph of $G$. Planar Support is motivated by applications in graph drawing and data visualization. We show that Planar Support is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the number of hyperedges in the input hypergraph and the outerplanarity number of the sought planar graph. To this end, we develop novel structural results for $r$-outerplanar triangulated disks, showing that they admit sequences of separators with structural properties enabling data reduction. This allows us to obtain a problem kernel for Planar Support, thus showing its fixed-parameter tractability.
Maximum matching width: new characterizations and a fast algorithm for dominating set
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give alternative definitions for maximum matching width, e.g. a graph $G$ has $\operatorname{mmw}(G) \leq k$ if and only if it is a subgraph of a chordal graph $H$ and for every maximal clique $X$ of $H$ there exists $A,B,C \subseteq X$ with $A \cup B \cup C=X$ and $|A|,|B|,|C| \leq k$ such that any subset of $X$ that is a minimal separator of $H$ is a subset of either $A, B$ or $C$. Treewidth and branchwidth have alternative definitions through intersections of subtrees, where treewidth focuses on nodes and branchwidth focuses on edges. We show that mm-width combines both aspects, focusing on nodes and on edges. Based on this we prove that given a graph $G$ and a branch decomposition of mm-width $k$ we can solve Dominating Set in time $O^*({8^k})$, thereby beating $O^*(3^{\operatorname{tw}(G)})$ whenever $\operatorname{tw}(G) > \log_3{8} \times k \approx 1.893 k$. Note that $\operatorname{mmw}(G) \leq \operatorname{tw}(G)+1 \leq 3 \operatorname{mmw}(G)$ and these inequalities are tight. Given only the graph $G$ and using the best known algorithms to find decompositions, maximum matching width will be better for solving Dominating Set whenever $\operatorname{tw}(G) > 1.549 \times \operatorname{mmw}(G)$.

The generic rigidity of triangulated spheres with blocks and holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A simple graph G=(V,E) is 3-rigid if its generic bar-joint frameworks in R3 are infinitesimally rigid. Block and hole graphs are derived from triangulated spheres by the removal of edges and the addition of minimally rigid subgraphs, known as blocks, in some of the resulting holes. Combinatorial characterisations of minimal $3$-rigidity are obtained for these graphs in the case of a single block and finitely many holes or a single hole and finitely many blocks. These results confirm a conjecture of Whiteley from 1988 and special cases of a stronger conjecture of Finbow-Singh and Whiteley from 2013.

Bouquet algebra of toric ideals
To any toric ideal $I_A$, encoded by an integer matrix $A$, we associate a matroid structure called {\em the bouquet graph} of $A$ and introduce another toric ideal called {\em the bouquet ideal} of $A$. We show how these objects capture the essential combinatorial and algebraic information about $I_A$. Passing from the toric ideal to its bouquet ideal reveals a structure that allows us to classify several cases. For example, on the one end of the spectrum, there are ideals that we call {\em stable}, for which bouquets capture the complexity of various generating sets as well as the minimal free resolution. On the other end of the spectrum lie toric ideals whose various bases (e.g., minimal generating sets, Gröbner, Graver bases) coincide. Apart from allowing for classification-type results, bouquets provide a new way to construct families of examples of toric ideals with various interesting properties, such as robustness, genericity, and unimodularity. The new bouquet framework can be used to provide a characterization of toric ideals whose Graver basis, the universal Gröbner basis, any reduced Gröbner basis and any minimal generating set coincide.

On fixing sets of composition and corona product of graphs
A fixing set $\mathcal{F}$ of a graph $G$ is a set of those vertices of the graph $G$ which when assigned distinct labels removes all the automorphisms from the graph except the trivial one. The fixing number of a graph $G$, denoted by $fix(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of a fixing set of $G$. In this paper, we study the fixing number of composition product, $G_1[G_2]$ and corona product, $G_1 \odot G_2$ of two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ with orders $m$ and $n$ respectively. We show that for a connected graph $G_1$ and an arbitrary graph $G_2$ having $l\geq 1$ components $G_2^1$, $G_2^2$, ... $G_2^l,$ $mn-1\geq fix(G_1[G_2])\geq m\left(\sum \limits_{i=1}^{l} fix(G_2^i )\right)$. For a connected graph $G_1$ and an arbitrary graph $G_2$, which are not asymmetric, we prove that $fix(G_1\odot G_2)=m fix( G_2)$. Further, for an arbitrary connected graph $G_{1}$ and an arbitrary graph $G_{2}$ we show that $fix(G_1\odot G_2)= max\{fix(G_1), m fix(G_2)\}$.

On the finite geometry of $W(23,16)$
We study the local geometry of the zero pattern of a weighing matrix $W(23,16)$. The geometry consists of $23$ lines and $23$ points where each line contains $7$ points. The incidence rules are that every two lines intersect in an odd number of points, and the dual statement holds as well. We show that more than $50\%$ of the pairs of lines must intersect at a single point, and construct a regular weighted graph out of this geometry. This might indicate that a weighing matrix $W(23,16)$ does not exist.

Zero-free regions of partition functions with applications to algorithms and graph limits
Published • View Publication • BIB
Based on a technique of Barvinok and Barvinok and Soberón we identify a class of edge-coloring models whose partition functions do not evaluate to zero on bounded degree graphs. Subsequently we give a quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme for computing these partition functions. As another application we show that the normalised partition functions of these models are continuous with respect the Benjamini-Schramm topology on bounded degree graphs. We moreover give quasi-polynomial time approximation schemes for evaluating a large class of graph polynomials, including the Tutte polynomial, on bounded degree graphs.

Exponential formulas for models of complex reflection groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we find some exponential formulas for the Betti numbers of the De Concini-Procesi minimal wonderful models Y_{G(r,p,n)} associated to the complex reflection groups G(r,p,n). Our formulas are different from the ones already known in the literature: they are obtained by a new combinatorial encoding of the elements of a basis of the cohomology by means of set partitions with weights and exponents. We also point out that a similar combinatorial encoding can be used to describe the faces of the real spherical wonderful models of type A_{n-1}=G(1,1,n), B_n=G(2,1,n) and D_n=G(2,2,n). This provides exponential formulas for the f-vectors of the associated nestohedra: the Stasheff's associahedra (in this case closed formulas are well known) and the graph associahedra of type D_n.
Finite edge-transitive oriented graphs of valency four: a global approach
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop a new framework for analysing finite connected, oriented graphs of valency 4, which admit a vertex-transitive and edge-transitive group of automorphisms preserving the edge orientation. We identify a sub-family of "basic" graphs such that each graph of this type is a normal cover of at least one basic graph. The basic graphs either admit an edge-transitive group of automorphisms that is quasiprimitive or biquasiprimitive on vertices, or admit an (oriented or unoriented) cycle as a normal quotient. We anticipate that each of these additional properties will facilitate effective further analysis, and we demonstrate that this is so for the quasiprimitive basic graphs. Here we obtain strong restirictions on the group involved, and construct several infinite families of such graphs which, to our knowledge, are different from any recorded in the literature so far. Several open problems are posed in the paper.

The "art of trellis decoding" is fixed-parameter tractable
Published in IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 63(11)(November 2017), pp. 7178-7205 • View Publication • BIB
Given n subspaces of a finite-dimensional vector space over a fixed finite field $\mathbb F$, we wish to find a linear layout $V_1,V_2,\ldots,V_n$ of the subspaces such that $\dim((V_1+V_2+\cdots+V_i) \cap (V_{i+1}+\cdots+V_n))\le k$ for all i, such a linear layout is said to have width at most k. When restricted to 1-dimensional subspaces, this problem is equivalent to computing the trellis-width (or minimum trellis state-complexity) of a linear code in coding theory and computing the path-width of an $\mathbb F$-represented matroid in matroid theory. We present a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm to construct a linear layout of width at most k, if it exists, for input subspaces of a finite-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb F$. As corollaries, we obtain a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm to produce a path-decomposition of width at most k for an input $\mathbb F$-represented matroid of path-width at most k, and a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm to find a linear rank-decomposition of width at most k for an input graph of linear rank-width at most k. In both corollaries, no such algorithms were known previously. It was previously known that a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm exists for the decision version of the problem for matroid path-width, a theorem by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle~(2002) implies that for each fixed finite field $\mathbb F$, there are finitely many forbidden $\mathbb F$-representable minors for the class of matroids of path-width at most k. An algorithm by Hliněný (2006) can detect a minor in an input $\mathbb F$-represented matroid of bounded branch-width. However, this indirect approach would not produce an actual path-decomposition. Our algorithm is the first one to construct such a path-decomposition and does not depend on the finiteness of forbidden minors.
Improved Upper Bounds on $a'(G\Box H)$
The acyclic edge colouring problem is extensively studied in graph theory. The corner-stone of this field is a conjecture of Alon et. al.\cite{alonacyclic} that $a'(G)\le Δ(G)+2$. In that and subsequent work, $a'(G)$ is typically bounded in terms of $Δ(G)$. Motivated by this we introduce a term $gap(G)$ defined as $gap(G)=a'(G)-Δ(G)$. Alon's conjecture can be rephrased as $gap(G)\le2$ for all graphs $G$. In \cite{manusccartprod} it was shown that $a'(G\Box H)\le a'(G)+a'(H)$, under some assumptions. Based on Alon's conjecture, we conjecture that $a'(G\Box H)\le a'(G)+Δ(H)$ under the same assumptions, resulting in a strengthening. The results of \cite{alonacyclic} validate our conjecture for the class of graphs it considers. We prove our conjecture for a significant subclass of sub-cubic graphs and state some generic conditions under which our conjecture can be proved. We suggest how our technique can be potentially applied by future researchers to expand the class of graphs for which our conjecture holds. Our results improve the understanding of the relationship between Cartesian Product and acyclic chromatic index.

A cospectral family of graphs for the normalized Laplacian found by toggling
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a construction of a family of (weighted) graphs that are pairwise cospectral with respect to the normalized Laplacian matrix, or equivalently probability transition matrix. This construction can be used to form pairs of cospectral graphs with differing number of edges, including situations where one graph is a subgraph of the other. The method used to demonstrate cospectrality is by showing the characteristic polynomials are equal.

Proof of a conjecture on the zero forcing number of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Amos et al. (Discrete Appl. Math. 181 (2015) 1-10) introduced the notion of the $k$-forcing number of graph for a positive integer $k$ as the generalization of the zero forcing number of a graph. The $k$-forcing number of a simple graph $G$, denoted by $F_k(G)$, is the minimum number of vertices that need to be initially colored so that all vertices eventually become colored during the discrete dynamical process by the following rule. Starting from an initial set of colored vertices and stopping when all vertices are colored: if a colored vertex has at most $k$ non-colored neighbors, then each of its non-colored neighbors become colored. Particulary, $F_1(G)$ is a widely studied invariant with close connection to the maximum nullity of a graph, under the name of the zero forcing number, denoted by $Z(G)$. Among other things, the authors proved that for a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ with $Δ=Δ(G)\geq 2$, $Z(G)\leq \frac{(Δ-2)n+2}{Δ-1}$, and this inequality is sharp. Moreover, they conjectured that $Z(G)=\frac{(Δ-2)n+2}{Δ-1}$ if and only if $G=C_n$, $G=K_{Δ+1}$ or $G=K_{Δ, Δ}$. In this note, we show the above conjecture is true.

Proper connection number and 2-proper connection number of a graph
A path in an edge-colored graph is called a proper path if no two adjacent edges of the path are colored with one same color. An edge-colored graph is called $k$-proper connected if any two vertices of the graph are connected by $k$ internally pairwise vertex-disjoint proper paths in the graph. The $k$-proper connection number of a $k$-connected graph $G$, denoted by $pc_k(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ $k$-proper connected. For $k=1$, we write $pc(G)$ other than $pc_1(G)$, and call it the proper connection number of $G$. In this paper, we present an upper bound for the proper connection number of a graph $G$ in terms of the minimum degree of $G$, and give some sufficient conditions for a graph to have $2$-proper connection number two. Also, we investigate the proper connection numbers of dense graphs.

Regularity lemma for distal structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that families of graphs with a semialgebraic edge relation of bounded complexity satisfy much stronger regularity properties than arbitrary graphs, and that they can be decomposed into very homogeneous semialgebraic pieces up to a small error (e.g., see [33, 2, 16, 18]). We show that similar results can be obtained for families of graphs with the edge relation uniformly definable in a structure satisfying a certain model theoretic property called distality, with respect to a large class of generically stable measures. Moreover, distality characterizes these strong regularity properties. This applies in particular to graphs definable in arbitrary $o$-minimal structures and in $p$-adics.

Locally triangular graphs and normal quotients of the $n$-cube
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. 44 (2016) 119-130 • View Publication • BIB
For an integer $n\geq 2$, the triangular graph has vertex set the $2$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and edge set the pairs of $2$-subsets intersecting at one point. Such graphs are known to be halved graphs of bipartite rectagraphs, which are connected triangle-free graphs in which every $2$-path lies in a unique quadrangle. We refine this result and provide a characterisation of connected locally triangular graphs as halved graphs of normal quotients of $n$-cubes. To do so, we study a parameter that generalises the concept of minimum distance for a binary linear code to arbitrary automorphism groups of the $n$-cube.

A note on the clique number of complete $k$-partite graphs
In this note, we show that a complete $k$-partite graph is the only graph with clique number $k$ among all degree-equivalent simple graphs. This result gives a lower bound on the clique number, which is sharper than existing bounds on a large family of graphs.
