Two Greedy Consequences for Maximum Induced Matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that, for every integer $d$ with $d\geq 3$, there is an approximation algorithm for the maximum induced matching problem restricted to $\{ C_3,C_5\}$-free $d$-regular graphs with performance ratio $0.708\bar{3}d+0.425$, which answers a question posed by Dabrowski et al. (Theor. Comput. Sci. 478 (2013) 33-40). Furthermore, we show that every graph with $m$ edges that is $k$-degenerate and of maximum degree at most $d$ with $k<d$, has an induced matching with at least $m/((3k-1)d-k(k+1)+1)$ edges.

Strong games played on random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a strong game played on the edge set of a graph G there are two players, Red and Blue, alternating turns in claiming previously unclaimed edges of G (with Red playing first). The winner is the first one to claim all the edges of some target structure (such as a clique, a perfect matching, a Hamilton cycle, etc.). It is well known that Red can always ensure at least a draw in any strong game, but finding explicit winning strategies is a difficult and a quite rare task. We consider strong games played on the edge set of a random graph G ~ G(n,p) on n vertices. We prove, for sufficiently large $n$ and a fixed constant 0 < p < 1, that Red can w.h.p win the perfect matching game on a random graph G ~ G(n,p).
Forbidden Induced Subgraphs for Bounded $p$-Intersection Number
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ has $p$-intersection number at most $d$ if it is possible to assign to every vertex $u$ of $G$, a subset $S(u)$ of some ground set $U$ with $|U|=d$ in such a way that distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$ are adjacent in $G$ if and only if $|S(u)\cap S(v)|\geq p$. We show that every minimal forbidden induced subgraph for the hereditary class ${\cal G}(d,p)$ of graphs whose $p$-intersection number is at most $d$, has order at most $3\cdot 2^{d+1}+1$, and that the exponential dependence on $d$ in this upper bound is necessary. For $p\in \{ d-1,d-2\}$, we provide more explicit results characterizing the graphs in ${\cal G}(d,p)$ without isolated/universal vertices using forbidden induced subgraphs.

Lattice Properties of Oriented Exchange Graphs and Torsion Classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The exchange graph of a 2-acyclic quiver is the graph of mutation-equivalent quivers whose edges correspond to mutations. When the quiver admits a nondegenerate Jacobi-finite potential, the exchange graph admits a natural acyclic orientation called the oriented exchange graph, as shown by Brüstle and Yang. The oriented exchange graph is isomorphic to the Hasse diagram of the poset of functorially finite torsion classes of a certain finite dimensional algebra. We prove that lattices of torsion classes are semidistributive lattices, and we use this result to conclude that oriented exchange graphs with finitely many elements are semidistributive lattices. Furthermore, if the quiver is mutation-equivalent to a type A Dynkin quiver or is an oriented cycle, then the oriented exchange graph is a lattice quotient of a lattice of biclosed subcategories of modules over the cluster-tilted algebra, generalizing Reading's Cambrian lattices in type A. We also apply our results to address a conjecture of Brüstle, Dupont, and Pérotin on the lengths of maximal green sequences.
Independence in Uniform Linear Triangle-free Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The independence number $α(H)$ of a hypergraph $H$ is the maximum cardinality of a set of vertices of $H$ that does not contain an edge of $H$. Generalizing Shearer's classical lower bound on the independence number of triangle-free graphs (J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B 53 (1991) 300-307), and considerably improving recent results of Li and Zang (SIAM J. Discrete Math. 20 (2006) 96-104) and Chishti et al. (Acta Univ. Sapientiae, Informatica 6 (2014) 132-158), we show that $$α(H)\geq \sum_{u\in V(H)}f_r(d_H(u))$$ for an $r$-uniform linear triangle-free hypergraph $H$ with $r\geq 2$, where \begin{eqnarray*} f_r(0)&=&1\mbox{, and }\\ f_r(d)&=&\frac{1+\Big((r-1)d^2-d\Big)f_r(d-1)}{1+(r-1)d^2}\mbox{ for $d\geq 1$.} \end{eqnarray*}
Multicolor Ramsey numbers and restricted Turán numbers for the loose 3-uniform path of length three
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $P$ denote a 3-uniform hypergraph consisting of 7 vertices $a,b,c,d,e,f,g$ and 3 edges $\{a,b,c\}, \{c,d,e\},$ and $\{e,f,g\}$. It is known that the $r$-colored Ramsey number for $P$ is $R(P;r)=r+6$ for $r=2,3$, and that $R(P;r)\le 3r$ for all $r\ge3$. The latter result follows by a standard application of the Turán number $ex_3(n;P)$, which was determined to be $\binom{n-1}2$ in our previous work. We have also shown that the full star is the only extremal 3-graph for $P$. In this paper, we perform a subtle analysis of the Turán numbers for $P$ under some additional restrictions. Most importantly, we determine the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex $P$-free 3-graph which is not a star. These Turán type results, in turn, allow us to confirm the formula $R(P;r)=r+6$ for $r\in\{4,5,6,7\}$.
Uniform linear embeddings of graphons
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $w:[0,1]^2\rightarrow [0,1]$ be a symmetric function, and consider the random process $G(n,w)$, where vertices are chosen from $[0,1]$ uniformly at random, and $w$ governs the edge formation probability. Such a random graph is said to have a linear embedding, if the probability of linking to a particular vertex $v$ decreases with distance. The rate of decrease, in general, depends on the particular vertex $v$. A linear embedding is called uniform if the probability of a link between two vertices depends only on the distance between them. In this article, we consider the question whether it is possible to "transform" a linear embedding to a uniform one, through replacing the uniform probability space $[0,1]$ with a suitable probability space on ${\mathbb R}$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a uniform linear embedding for random graphs where $w$ attains only a finite number of values. Our findings show that for a general $w$ the answer is negative in most cases.

Edge reconstruction of the Ihara zeta function
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that if a graph $G$ has average degree $\bar d \geq 4$, then the Ihara zeta function of $G$ is edge-reconstructible. We prove some general spectral properties of the edge adjacency operator $T$: it is symmetric for an indefinite form and has a "large" semi-simple part (but it can fail to be semi-simple in general). We prove that this implies that if $\bar d>4$, one can reconstruct the number of non-backtracking (closed or not) walks through a given edge, the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector of $T$ (modulo a natural symmetry), as well as the closed walks that pass through a given edge in both directions at least once. The appendix by Daniel MacDonald established the analogue for multigraphs of some basic results in reconstruction theory of simple graphs that are used in the main text.

List colouring with a bounded palette
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 84(1): 93-103, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
Král' and Sgall (2005) introduced a refinement of list colouring where every colour list must be subset to one predetermined palette of colours. We call this $(k,\ell)$-choosability when the palette is of size at most $\ell$ and the lists must be of size at least $k$. They showed that, for any integer $k\ge 2$, there is an integer $C=C(k,2k-1)$, satisfying $C = O(16^{k}\ln k)$ as $k\to \infty$, such that, if a graph is $(k,2k-1)$-choosable, then it is $C$-choosable, and asked if $C$ is required to be exponential in $k$. We demonstrate it must satisfy $C = Ω(4^k/\sqrt{k})$. For an integer $\ell \ge 2k-1$, if $C(k,\ell)$ is the least integer such that a graph is $C(k,\ell)$-choosable if it is $(k,\ell)$-choosable, then we more generally supply a lower bound on $C(k,\ell)$, one that is super-polynomial in $k$ if $\ell = o(k^2/\ln k)$, by relation to an extremal set theoretic property. By the use of containers, we also give upper bounds on $C(k,\ell)$ that improve on earlier bounds if $\ell \ge 2.75 k$.
Renormalization and Hopf Algebraic Structure of the 5-Dimensional Quartic Tensor Field Theory
Published in J.Phys. A48 (2015) no.48, 485204 • View Publication • BIB
This paper is devoted to the study of renormalization of the quartic melonic tensor model in dimension (=rank) five. We review the perturbative renormalization and the computation of the one loop beta function, confirming the asymptotic freedom of the model. We then define the Connes-Kreimer-like Hopf algebra describing the combinatorics of the renormalization of this model and we analyze in detail, at one- and two-loop levels, the Hochschild cohomology allowing to write the combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations. Feynman tensor graph Hopf subalgebras are also exhibited.

Distance Preserving Graphs
Given a graph $G$ then a subgraph $H$ is $isometric$ if, for every pair of vertices $u,v$ of $H$, we have $d_H(u,v) = d_G(u,v)$. We say a graph $G$ is $distance\ preserving\ (dp)$ if it has an isometric subgraph of every possible order up to the order of $G$. We consider how to add a vertex to a dp graph so that the result is a dp graph. This condition implies that chordal graphs are dp. We also find a condition on the girth of $G$ which implies that it is not dp. In closing, we discuss other work and open problems concerning dp graphs.

Two characterizations of simple circulant tournaments
The \textit{acyclic disconnection} $\overrightarrow{ω}(D)$ (resp. the \textit{directed triangle free disconnection } $\overrightarrow{ω}_{3}(D)$) of a digraph $D$ is defined as the maximum possible number of connected components of the underlying graph of $D\setminus A(D^{\ast })$ where $D^{\ast }$ is an acyclic (resp. a directed triangle free) subdigraph of $D$. In this paper, we generalize some previous results and solve some problems posed by V. Neumann-Lara (The acyclic disconnection of a digraph, Discrete Math. 197/198 (1999), 617-632). Let $\overrightarrow{C}_{2n+1}(J)$ be a circulant tournament. We prove that $\overrightarrow{C}_{2n+1}(J)$ is $\overrightarrow{% ω}$-keen and $\overrightarrow{ω_{3}}$-keen, respectively, and $% \overrightarrow{ω}(\overrightarrow{C}_{2n+1}(J))=\overrightarrow{% ω}_{3}(\overrightarrow{C}_{2n+1}(J))=2$ for every $\overrightarrow{C}% _{2n+1}(J)$. Finally, it is showed that $\overrightarrow{ω}_{3}(% \overrightarrow{C}_{2n+1}(J))=2$, $\overrightarrow{C}_{2n+1}(J)$ is simple and $J$ is aperiodic are equivalent propositions.

Existence of $u$-representation of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Jones et al. introduced the study of $u$-representable graphs, where $u$ is a word over $\{1,2\}$ containing at least one 1. The notion of a $u$-representable graph is a far-reaching generalization of the notion of a word-representable graph studied in the literature in a series of papers. Jones et al. have shown that any graph is $11\cdots 1$-representable assuming that the number of 1s is at least three, while the class of 12-rerpesentable graphs is properly contained in the class of comparability graphs, which, in turn, is properly contained in the class of word-representable graphs corresponding to 11-representable graphs. Further studies in this direction were conducted by Nabawanda, who has shown, in particular, that the class of 112-representable graphs is not included in the class of word-representable graphs. Jones et al. raised a question on classification of $u$-representable graphs at least for small values of $u$. In this paper we show that if $u$ is of length at least 3 then any graph is $u$-representable. This rather unexpected result shows that from existence of representation point of view there are only two interesting non-equivalent cases in the theory of $u$-representable graphs, namely, those of $u=11$ and $u=12$.

The Coloring Game on Planar Graphs with Large Girth, by a result on Sparse Cactuses
Published • View Publication • BIB
We denote by $χ$ g (G) the game chromatic number of a graph G, which is the smallest number of colors Alice needs to win the coloring game on G. We know from Montassier et al. [M. Montassier, P. Ossona de Mendez, A. Raspaud and X. Zhu, Decomposing a graph into forests, J. Graph Theory Ser. B, 102(1):38-52, 2012] and, independantly, from Wang and Zhang, [Y. Wang and Q. Zhang. Decomposing a planar graph with girth at least 8 into a forest and a matching, Discrete Maths, 311:844-849, 2011] that planar graphs with girth at least 8 have game chromatic number at most 5. One can ask if this bound of 5 can be improved for a sufficiently large girth. In this paper, we prove that it cannot. More than that, we prove that there are cactuses CT (i.e. graphs whose edges only belong to at most one cycle each) having $χ$ g (CT) = 5 despite having arbitrary large girth, and even arbitrary large distance between its cycles.
The Coarse Geometry of Hartnell's Firefighter Problem on Infinite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we study Hartnell's Firefighter Problem through the group theoretic notions of growth and quasi-isometry. A graph has the $n$-containment property if for every finite initial fire, there is a strategy to contain the fire by protecting $n$ vertices at each turn. A graph has the constant containment property if there is an integer $n$ such that it has the $n$-containment property. Our first result is that any locally finite connected graph with quadratic growth has the constant containment property; the converse does not hold. This result provides a unified way to recover previous results in the literature, in particular the class of graphs satisfying the constant containment property is infinite. A second result is that in the class of graphs with bounded degree, having the constant containment property is preserved by quasi-isometry. Some sample consequences of the second result are that any regular tiling of the Euclidean plane has the fire containment property; no regular tiling of the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space has the containment property if $n>2$; and no regular tiling of the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space has the containment property if $n\geq 2$. We prove analogous results for the $\{f_n\}$-containment property, where $f_n$ is an integer sequence corresponding to the number of vertices protected at time $n$. In particular, we positively answer a conjecture by Develin and Hartke by proving that the $d$-dimensional square grid $\mathbb{L}^d$ does not satisfy the $cn^{d-3}$-containment property for any constant $c$.

Symmetry in Turán Sums of Squares Polynomials from Flag Algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Turán problems in extremal combinatorics ask to find asymptotic bounds on the edge densities of graphs and hypergraphs that avoid specified subgraphs. The theory of flag algebras proposed by Razborov provides powerful methods based on semidefinite programming to find sums of squares that establish edge density inequalities in Turán problems. Working with polynomial analogs of the flag algebra entities, we prove that such sums of squares created by flag algebras can be retrieved from a restricted version of the symmetry-adapted semidefinite program proposed by Gatermann and Parrilo. This involves using the representation theory of the symmetric group for finding succinct sums of squares expressions for invariant polynomials. The connection reveals several combinatorial and structural properties of flag algebra sums of squares, and offers new tools for Turán and other related problems.

Homomorphic Preimages of Geometric Cycles
Published in Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory, Vol. 38 (2) (2018): pp. 553 - 572 • View Publication • BIB
A graph G is a homomorphic preimage of another graph H, or equivalently G is H-colorable, if there exists a graph homomorphism from G to H. A classic problem is to characterize the family of homomorphic preimages of a given graph H. A geometric graph is a simple graph G together with a straight line drawing of G in the plane with the vertices in general position. A geometric homomorphism (resp. isomorphism) is a graph homomorphism (resp. isomorphism) that preserves edge crossings (resp. and non-crossings). The homomorphism posetof a graph G is the set of isomorphism classes of geometric realizations of G partially ordered by the existence of injective geometric homomorphisms. A geometric graph G is H-colorable if there is a geometric homomorphism from G to some element of the homomorphism poset of H. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a geometric graph to be C_n-colorable for n less than 6.

Analytic connectivity of $k$-uniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the analytic connectivity of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, denoted by $α(H)$. In addition to computing the analytic connectivity of a complete $k$-graph, we present several bounds on analytic connectivity that relate it with other graph invariants, such as degree, vertex connectivity, diameter, and isoperimetric number.
Splitting Planar Graphs of Girth 6 into Two Linear Forests with Short Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Borodin, Kostochka, and Yancey (On $1$-improper $2$-coloring of sparse graphs. Discrete Mathematics, 313(22), 2013) showed that the vertices of each planar graph of girth at least $7$ can be $2$-colored so that each color class induces a subgraph of a matching. We prove that any planar graph of girth at least $6$ admits a vertex coloring in $2$ colors such that each monochromatic component is a path of length at most $14$. Moreover, we show a list version of this result. On the other hand, for each positive integer $t\geq 3$, we construct a planar graph of girth $4$ such that in any coloring of vertices in $2$ colors there is a monochromatic path of length at least $t$. It remains open whether each planar graph of girth $5$ admits a $2$-coloring with no long monochromatic paths.

The 3/5-conjecture for weakly $S(K_{1,3})$-free forests
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $3/5$-conjecture for the domination game states that the game domination numbers of an isolate-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices are bounded as follows: $γ_g(G)\leq \frac{3n}5 $ and $γ_g'(G)\leq \frac{3n+2}5 $. Recent progress have been done on the subject and the conjecture is now proved for graphs with minimum degree at least $2$. One powerful tool, introduced by Bujtás is the so-called greedy strategy for \D. In particular, using this strategy, she has proved the conjecture for isolate-free forests without leafs at distance $4$. In this paper, we improve this strategy to extend the result to the larger class of weakly $S(K_{1,3})$-free forests, where a weakly $S(K_{1,3})$-free forest $F$ is an isolate-free forest without induced $S(K_{1,3})$, whose leafs are leafs of $F$ as well.
