Cycles are strongly Ramsey-unsaturated
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 23 (2014) 607-630 • View Publication • BIB
We call a graph H Ramsey-unsaturated if there is an edge in the complement of H such that the Ramsey number r(H) of H does not change upon adding it to H. This notion was introduced by Balister, Lehel and Schelp who also proved that cycles (except for $C_4$) are Ramsey-unsaturated, and conjectured that, moreover, one may add any chord without changing the Ramsey number of the cycle $C_n$, unless n is even and adding the chord creates an odd cycle. We prove this conjecture for large cycles by showing a stronger statement: If a graph H is obtained by adding a linear number of chords to a cycle $C_n$, then $r(H)=r(C_n)$, as long as the maximum degree of H is bounded, H is either bipartite (for even n) or almost bipartite (for odd n), and n is large. This motivates us to call cycles strongly Ramsey-unsaturated. Our proof uses the regularity method.

On higher order Fourier analysis
We develop a theory of higher order structures in compact abelian groups. In the frame of this theory we prove general inverse theorems and regularity lemmas for Gowers's uniformity norms. We put forward an algebraic interpretation of the notion "higher order Fourier analysis" in terms of continuous morphisms between structures called compact $k$-step nilspaces. As a byproduct of our results we obtain a new type of limit theory for functions on abelian groups in the spirit of the so-called graph limit theory. Our proofs are based on an exact (non-approximative) version of higher order Fourier analysis which appears on ultra product groups.

From Quasirandom graphs to Graph Limits and Graphlets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the notion of quasirandom which concerns a class of equivalent properties that random graphs satisfy. We show that the convergence of a graph sequence under the spectral distance is equivalent to the convergence using the (normalized) cut distance. The resulting graph limit is called graphlets. We then consider several families of graphlets and, in particular, we characterize graphlets with low ranks for both dense and sparse graphs.
Cohen--Macaulaynees for symbolic power ideals of edge ideals
Published in Journal of Algebra 347 (2011) 405-430 • View Publication • BIB
Let $S = K[x_1,..., x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$. Let $I(G) \subseteq S$ denote the edge ideal of a graph $G$. We show that the $\ell$th symbolic power $I(G)^{(\ell)}$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ideal (i.e., $S/I(G)^{(\ell)}$ is Cohen-Macaulay) for some integer $\ell \ge 3$ if and only if $G$ is a disjoint union of finitely many complete graphs. When this is the case, all the symbolic powers $I(G)^{(\ell)}$ are Cohen-Macaulay ideals. Similarly, we characterize graphs $G$ for which $S/I(G)^{(\ell)}$ has (FLC). As an application, we show that an edge ideal $I(G)$ is complete intersection provided that $S/I(G)^{\ell}$ is Cohen-Macaulay for some integer $\ell \ge 3$. This strengthens the main theorem in [Effective Cowsik-Nori theorem for edge ideals by M.Crupi, G.Rinaldo, N.Terai, and K.Yoshida, Comm. Alg. 38 (2010), 3347-3357].

On snarks that are far from being 3-edge colorable
In this note we construct two infinite snark families which have high oddness and low circumference compared to the number of vertices. Using this construction, we also give a counterexample to a suggested strengthening of Fulkerson's conjecture by showing that the Petersen graph is not the only cyclically 4-edge connected cubic graph which require at least five perfect matchings to cover its edges. Furthermore the counterexample presented has the interesting property that no 2-factor can be part of a cycle double cover.
K_6 minors in 6-connected graphs of bounded tree-width
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every sufficiently big 6-connected graph of bounded tree-width either has a K_6 minor, or has a vertex whose deletion makes the graph planar. This is a step toward proving that the same conclusion holds for all sufficiently big 6-connected graphs. Jorgensen conjectured that it holds for all 6-connected graphs.

Jorgensen conjectured that every 6-connected graph with no K_6 minor has a vertex whose deletion makes the graph planar. We prove the conjecture for all sufficiently large graphs.

On the robustness of random k-cores
The k-core of a graph is its maximal subgraph with minimum degree at least k. In this paper, we address robustness questions about k-cores. Given a k-core, remove one edge uniformly at random and find its new k-core. We are interested in how many vertices are deleted from the original k-core to find the new one. This can be seem as a measure of robustness of the original k-core. We prove that, if the initial k-core is chosen uniformly at random from the k-cores with n vertices and m edges, its robustness depends essentially on its average degree c. We prove that, if c converges to k, then the new k-core is empty with probability 1+o(1). We define a constant c(k)' such that when k+epsilon < c < c(k)'- epsilon, the new k-core is empty with probability bounded away from zero and, if c > c(k)'+ psi with psi = omega(n^{-1/4}), psi(n) > 0 and c is bounded, then the probability that the new k-core has less than n-h(n) vertices goes to zero, for every h(n) = omega(1/psi).

Edge-decomposition of graphs into copies of a tree with four edges
We study edge-decompositions of highly connected graphs into copies of a given tree. In particular we attack the following conjecture by Barát and Thomassen: for each tree $T$, there exists a natural number $k_T$ such that if $G$ is a $k_T$-edge-connected graph, and $|E(T)|$ divides $|E(G)|$, then $E(G)$ has a decomposition into copies of $T$. As one of our main results it is sufficient to prove the conjecture for bipartite graphs. Let $Y$ be the unique tree with degree sequence $(1,1,1,2,3)$. We prove that if $G$ is a 191-edge-connected graph of size divisible by 4, then $G$ has a $Y$-decomposition. This is the first instance of such a theorem, in which the tree is different from a path or a star.

Local-Optimality Guarantees for Optimal Decoding Based on Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper presents a unified analysis framework that captures recent advances in the study of local-optimality characterizations for codes on graphs. These local-optimality characterizations are based on combinatorial structures embedded in the Tanner graph of the code. Local-optimality implies both unique maximum-likelihood (ML) optimality and unique linear-programming (LP) decoding optimality. Also, an iterative message-passing decoding algorithm is guaranteed to find the unique locally-optimal codeword, if one exists. We demonstrate this proof technique by considering a definition of local-optimality that is based on the simplest combinatorial structures in Tanner graphs, namely, paths of length $h$. We apply the technique of local-optimality to a family of Tanner codes. Inverse polynomial bounds in the code length are proved on the word error probability of LP-decoding for this family of Tanner codes.

Paley Graphs and Their Generalizations
To construct a Paley graph, we fix a finite field and consider its elements as vertices of the Paley graph. Two vertices are connected by an edge if their difference is a square in the field. We will study some important properties of the Paley graphs. In particular, we will show that the Paley graphs are connected, symmetric, and self-complementary. Also we will show that the Paley graph of order q is (q-1)/2 -regular, and every two adjacent vertices have (q-5)/4 common neighbors, and every two non-adjacent vertices have q-1/4 common neighbors, which means that the Paley graphs are strongly regular with parameters(q,q-1/2,q-5/4, q-1/4). Paley graphs are generalized by many mathematicians. In the first section of Chapter 3 we will see three examples of these generalizations and some of their basic properties. In the second section of Chapter 3 we will define a new generalization of the Paley graphs, in which pairs of elements of a finite field are connected by an edge if and only if there difference belongs to the m-th power of the multiplicative group of the field, for any odd integer m > 1, and we call them the m-Paley graphs. In the third section we will show that the m-Paley graph of order q is complete if and only if gcd(m, q - 1) = 1 and when d = gcd(m, q - 1) > 1, the m-Paley graph is q-1/d -regular. Also we will prove that the m-Paley graphs are symmetric but not self-complementary. We will show also that the m-Paley graphs of prime order are connected but the m-Paley graphs of order p^n, n > 1 are not necessary connected, for example they are disconnected if gcd(m, p^n - 1) =(p^n-1)/ 2.

Transience and recurrence of rotor-router walks on directed covers of graphs
Published in Electronic Communications in Probability 17 (2012), 1-13, #P41 • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this note is to extend the result of Angel and Holroyd concerning the transience and the recurrence of transfinite rotor-router walks, for random initial configuration of rotors on homogeneous trees. We address the same question on directed covers of finite graphs, which are also called trees with finitely many cone types or periodic trees. Furthermore, we provide an example of a directed cover such that the rotor-router walk can be either recurrent or transient, depending only on the planar embedding of the periodic tree.

Constructing subset partition graphs with strong adjacency and end-point count properties
Kim defined a very general combinatorial abstraction of the diameter of polytopes called subset partition graphs to study how certain combinatorial properties of such graphs may be achieved in lower bound constructions. Using Lovász' Local Lemma, we give a general randomized construction for subset partition graphs satisfying strong adjacency and end-point count properties. This can be used as a building block to conceptually simplify the constructions given in [Kim11]. We also use our method to construct abstract spindles, an analogy to the spindles used by Santos to disprove the Hirsch conjecture, of exponential length which satisfy the adjacency and end-point count properties.

Extremal Graph Theory for Metric Dimension and Girth
A set $W\subseteq V(G)$ is called a resolving set for $G$, if for each two distinct vertices $u,v\in V(G)$ there exists $w\in W$ such that $d(u,w)\neq d(v,w)$, where $d(x,y)$ is the distance between the vertices $x$ and $y$. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for $G$ is called the metric dimension of $G$, and denoted by $β(G)$. In this paper, it is proved that in a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ which has a cycle, $β(G)\leq n-g(G)+2$, where $g(G)$ is the length of a shortest cycle in $G$, and the equality holds if and only if $G$ is a cycle, a complete graph or a complete bipartite graph $K_{s,t}$, $ s,t\geq 2$.

Uniquely K_r-Saturated Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph G is uniquely K_r-saturated if it contains no clique with r vertices and if for all edges e in the complement, G + e has a unique clique with r vertices. Previously, few examples of uniquely K_r-saturated graphs were known, and little was known about their properties. We search for these graphs by adapting orbital branching, a technique originally developed for symmetric integer linear programs. We find several new uniquely K_r-saturated graphs with 4 \leq r \leq 7, as well as two new infinite families based on Cayley graphs for Z_n with a small number of generators.

Cycles and eigenvalues of sequentially growing random regular graphs
Published in Annals of Probability 2014, Vol. 42, No. 4, 1396-1437 • View Publication • BIB
Consider the sum of $d$ many i.i.d. random permutation matrices on $n$ labels along with their transposes. The resulting matrix is the adjacency matrix of a random regular (multi)-graph of degree $2d$ on $n$ vertices. It is known that the distribution of smooth linear eigenvalue statistics of this matrix is given asymptotically by sums of Poisson random variables. This is in contrast with Gaussian fluctuation of similar quantities in the case of Wigner matrices. It is also known that for Wigner matrices the joint fluctuation of linear eigenvalue statistics across minors of growing sizes can be expressed in terms of the Gaussian Free Field (GFF). In this article, we explore joint asymptotic (in $n$) fluctuation for a coupling of all random regular graphs of various degrees obtained by growing each component permutation according to the Chinese Restaurant Process. Our primary result is that the corresponding eigenvalue statistics can be expressed in terms of a family of independent Yule processes with immigration. These processes track the evolution of short cycles in the graph. If we now take $d$ to infinity, certain GFF-like properties emerge.

On homometric sets in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a vertex set $S\subseteq V(G)$ in a graph $G$, the {\em distance multiset}, $D(S)$, is the multiset of pairwise distances between vertices of $S$ in $G$. Two vertex sets are called {\em homometric} if their distance multisets are identical. For a graph $G$, the largest integer $h$, such that there are two disjoint homometric sets of order $h$ in $G$, is denoted by $h(G)$. We slightly improve the general bound on this parameter introduced by Albertson, Pach and Young (2010) and investigate it in more detail for trees and graphs of bounded diameter. In particular, we show that for any tree $T$ on $n$ vertices $h(T) \geq \sqrt[3]{n}$ and for any graph $G$ of fixed diameter $d$, $h(G) \geq cn^{1/ (2d-2)}$.

The Laplacian on planar graphs and graphs on surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
These are lecture notes for the Current Developments in Mathematics conference at Harvard, November, 2011. We discuss topological, probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of the Laplacian on a graph embedded on a surface. The three main goals are to discuss: (1) for "circular" planar networks, the characterization due to Colin de Verdière of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator; (2) The connections with the random spanning tree model; and (3) the characteristic polynomial of the Laplacian on an annulus and torus.

On infinite-finite duality pairs of directed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The (A,D) duality pairs play crucial role in the theory of general relational structures and in the Constraint Satisfaction Problem. The case where both classes are finite is fully characterized. The case when both side are infinite seems to be very complex. It is also known that no finite-infinite duality pair is possible if we make the additional restriction that both classes are antichains. In this paper (which is the first one of a series) we start the detailed study of the infinite-finite case. Here we concentrate on directed graphs. We prove some elementary properties of the infinite-finite duality pairs, including lower and upper bounds on the size of D, and show that the elements of A must be equivalent to forests if A is an antichain. Then we construct instructive examples, where the elements of A are paths or trees. Note that the existence of infinite-finite antichain dualities was not previously known.
