Let $G$ be any triangle-free graph with maximum degree $Δ\leq 3$. Staton proved that the independence number of $G$ is at least 5/14n. Heckman and Thomas conjectured that Staton's result can be strengthened into a bound on the fractional chromatic number of $G$, namely $χ_f(G)\leq 14/5. Recently, Hatami and Zhu proved $χ_f(G) \leq 3 -{3/64}$. In this paper, we prove $χ_f(G) \leq 3- 3/43$.

We study $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs from the point of view of what we call descendents, that is to say, those vertex subsets with the property that the width $w$ and dual width $w^*$ satisfy $w+w^*=d$, where $d$ is the diameter of the graph. We show among other results that a nontrivial descendent with $w\ge 2$ is convex precisely when the graph has classical parameters. The classification of descendents has been done for the 5 classical families of graphs associated with short regular semilattices. We revisit and characterize these families in terms of posets consisting of descendents, and extend the classification to all of the 15 known infinite families with classical parameters and with unbounded diameter.
Cohomology of real Grassmann manifold and KP flow
We consider a realization of the real Grassmann manifold Gr(k,n) based on a particular flow defined by the corresponding (singular) solution of the KP equation. Then we show that the KP flow can provide an explicit and simple construction of the incidence graph for the integral cohomology of Gr(k,n). It turns out that there are two types of graphs, one for the trivial coefficients and other for the twisted coefficients, and they correspond to the homology groups of the orientable and non-orientable cases of Gr(k,n) via the Poincare-Lefschetz duality. We also derive an explicit formula of the Poincare polynomial for Gr(k,n) and show that the Poincare polynomial is also related to the number of points on a suitable version of Gr(k,n) over a finite field $\F_q$ with q being a power of a prime. In particular, we find that the number of $\F_q$ points on Gr(k,n) can be computed by counting the number of singularities along the KP flow.
Maker Can Construct a Sparse Graph on a Small Board
We study Maker/Breaker games on the edges of sparse graphs. Maker and Breaker take turns in claiming previously unclaimed edges of a given graph H. Maker aims to occupy a given target graph G and Breaker tries to prevent Maker from achieving his goal. We define a function f and show that for every d-regular graph G on n vertices there is a graph H with at most f(d)n edges such that Maker can occupy a copy of G in the game on H.
Topology of Cayley Graphs Applied to Inverse Additive Problems
We present proofs of the basic isopermetric structure theory, obtaining some new simplified proofs. As an application, we obtain simple descriptions for subsets $S$ of an abelian group with $|kS|\le k|S|-k+1$ or $|kS-rS|- (k+r)|S|,$ where $1\le r \le k.$ These results may be applied to several questions in Combinatorics and Additive Combinatorics (Frobenius Problem, Waring's problem in finite fields and Cayley graphs with a big diameter, ....).

Aichholzer et al. [{\it Graphs and Combinatorics}, Vol. 23, 481-507, 2007] introduced the notion of pseudo-convex partitioning of planar point sets and proved that the pseudo-convex partition number $ψ(n)$ satisfies, $\frac{3}{4}\lfloor\frac{n}{4}\rfloor\leq ψ(n)\leq\lceil\frac{n}{4}\rceil$. In this paper we prove that $ψ(13)=3$, which immediately improves the upper bound on $ψ(n)$ to $\lceil\frac{3n}{13}\rceil$, thus answering a question posed by Aichholzer et al. in the same paper.
There exists no distance-regular graph with intersection array {55,36,11;1,4,45}
We prove that a distance-regular graph with intersection array $\{55,36,11;1,4,45\}$ does not exist. This intersection array is from the table of feasible parameters for distance-regular graphs in "Distance-regular graphs"\ by A.E. Brouwer, A.M. Cohen, A. Neumaier.

We consider the discrete-time threshold-$θ\ge 2$ contact process on a random r-regular graph on n vertices. In this process, a vertex with at least θoccupied neighbors at time t will be occupied at time t+1 with probability p, and vacant otherwise. We show that if $θ\ge 2$ and $r \ge θ+2$, $ε_1$ is small and p is at least $p_1(ε_1)$, then starting from all vertices occupied the fraction of occupied vertices stays above $1-2ε_1$ up to time $\exp(γ_1(r)n)$ with probability at least $1 - \exp(-γ_1(r)n)$. In the other direction, we show that for $p_2 < 1$ there is an $ε_2(p_2)>0$ so that if $p \le p_2$ and the number of occupied vertices in the initial configuration is at most $ε_2(p_2)n$, then with high probability all vertices are vacant at time $C_2(p_2) \log(n)$. These two conclusions imply that on the random r-regular graph there cannot be a quasi-stationary distribution with density of occupied vertices between 0 and $ε_2(p_1)$, and allow us to conclude that the process on the r-tree has a first order phase transition.
Segment representation of a subclass of co-planar graphs

A graph is said to be a segment graph if its vertices can be mapped to line segments in the plane such that two vertices have an edge between them if and only if their corresponding line segments intersect. Kratochvíl and Kuběna [``On intersection representations of co-planar graphs'', Discrete Mathematics, 178(1-3):251-255, 1998] asked the question of whether the complements of planar graphs are segment graphs. We show here that the complements of all partial 2-trees are segment graphs.

We obtain a hypergraph generalisation of the graph blow-up lemma proved by Komlos, Sarkozy and Szemeredi, showing that hypergraphs with sufficient regularity and no atypical vertices behave as if they were complete for the purpose of embedding bounded degree hypergraphs.
Turánnical hypergraphs

This paper is motivated by the question of how global and dense restriction sets in results from extremal combinatorics can be replaced by less global and sparser ones. The result we consider here as an example is Turan's theorem, which deals with graphs G=([n],E) such that no member of the restriction set consisting of all r-tuples on [n] induces a copy of K_r.
Firstly, we examine what happens when this restriction set is replaced just by all r-tuples touching a given m-element set. That is, we determine the maximal number of edges in an n-vertex such that no K_r hits a given vertex set.
Secondly, we consider sparse random restriction sets. An r-uniform hypergraph R on vertex set [n] is called Turannical (respectively epsilon-Turannical), if for any graph G on [n] with more edges than the Turan number ex(n,K_r) (respectively (1+\eps)ex(n,K_r), no hyperedge of R induces a copy of K_r in G. We determine the thresholds for random r-uniform hypergraphs to be Turannical and to epsilon-Turannical.
Thirdly, we transfer this result to sparse random graphs, using techniques recently developed by Schacht [Extremal results for random discrete structures] to prove the Kohayakawa-Luczak-Rodl Conjecture on Turan's theorem in random graphs.
Spectral characterization of a specific class of trees
In this paper, it is shown that the graph $T_4(p,q,r)$ is determined by its Laplacian spectrum and there are no two non-isomorphic such graphs which are cospectral with respect to adjacency spectrum.

A path in an edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may have the same color, is called a rainbow path if no two edges of the path are colored the same. The rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum integer $i$ for which there exists an $i$-edge-coloring of $G$ such that every two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by a rainbow path. The strong rainbow connection number $src(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum integer $i$ for which there exists an $i$-edge-coloring of $G$ such that every two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$ are connected by a rainbow path of length $d(u,v)$. In this paper, we give upper and lower bounds of the (strong) rainbow connection Cayley graphs of Abelian groups. Moreover, we determine the (strong) rainbow connection numbers of some special cases.
On Packing Colorings of Distance Graphs

The {\em packing chromatic number} $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least integer $k$ for which there exists a mapping $f$ from $V(G)$ to $\{1,2,\ldots ,k\}$ such that any two vertices of color $i$ are at distance at least $i+1$. This paper studies the packing chromatic number of infinite distance graphs $G(\mathbb{Z},D)$, i.e. graphs with the set $\mathbb{Z}$ of integers as vertex set, with two distinct vertices $i,j\in \mathbb{Z}$ being adjacent if and only if $|i-j|\in D$. We present lower and upper bounds for $χ_ρ(G(\mathbb{Z},D))$, showing that for finite $D$, the packing chromatic number is finite. Our main result concerns distance graphs with $D=\{1,t\}$ for which we prove some upper bounds on their packing chromatic numbers, the smaller ones being for $t\geq 447$: $χ_ρ(G(\mathbb{Z},\{1,t\}))\leq 40$ if $t$ is odd and $χ_ρ(G(\mathbb{Z},\{1,t\}))\leq 81$ if $t$ is even.
Rainbow Connection Number and Radius

The rainbow connection number, rc(G), of a connected graph G is the minimum number of colours needed to colour its edges, so that every pair of its vertices is connected by at least one path in which no two edges are coloured the same. In this note we show that for every bridgeless graph G with radius r, rc(G) <= r(r + 2). We demonstrate that this bound is the best possible for rc(G) as a function of r, not just for bridgeless graphs, but also for graphs of any stronger connectivity. It may be noted that for a general 1-connected graph G, rc(G) can be arbitrarily larger than its radius (Star graph for instance). We further show that for every bridgeless graph G with radius r and chordality (size of a largest induced cycle) k, rc(G) <= rk.
It is known that computing rc(G) is NP-Hard [Chakraborty et al., 2009]. Here, we present a (r+3)-factor approximation algorithm which runs in O(nm) time and a (d+3)-factor approximation algorithm which runs in O(dm) time to rainbow colour any connected graph G on n vertices, with m edges, diameter d and radius r.
When can perfect state transfer occur?

Let $X$ be a graph on $n$ vertices with with adjacency matrix $A$ and let $H(t)$ denote the matrix-valued function $\exp(iAt)$. If $u$ and $v$ are distinct vertices in $X$, we say perfect state transfer from $u$ to $v$ occurs if there is a time $τ$ such that $|H(τ)_{u,v}| = 1$. Our chief problem is to characterize the cases where perfect state transfer occurs. We show that if perfect state transfer does occur in a graph, then the spectral radius is an integer or a quadratic irrational; using this we prove that there are only finitely many graphs with perfect state transfer and with maximum valency at most 4K4. We also show that if perfect state transfer from $u$ to $v$ occurs, then the graphs $X\setminus u$ and $X\setminus v$ are cospectral and any automorphism of $X$ that fixes $u$ must fix $v$ (and conversely).

We prove new lower bounds on the likely size of a maximum independent set in a random graph with a given average degree. Our method is a weighted version of the second moment method, where we give each independent set a weight based on the total degree of its vertices.
Domino shuffling for the Del Pezzo 3 lattice
We present a version of the domino shuffling algorithm (due to Elkies, Kuperberg, Larsen and Propp) which works on a different lattice: the hexagonal lattice superimposed on its dual graph. We use our algorithm to count perfect matchings on a family of finite subgraphs of this lattice whose boundary conditions are compatible with our algorithm. In particular, we re-prove an enumerative theorem of Ciucu, as well as finding a related family of subgraphs which have 2^{(n+1)^2} perfect matchings. We also give three-variable generating functions for perfect matchings on both families of graphs, which encode certain statistics on the height functions of these graphs.

Also we give a duality formula for the relative Tutte polynomial of dual plane graphs and an expression of the Kauffman bracket of a virtual link as a specialization of the relative Tutte polynomial.
