Minimum non-chromatic-$λ$-choosable graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a multi-set $λ=\{k_1,k_2, \ldots, k_q\}$ of positive integers, let $k_λ = \sum_{i=1}^q k_i$. A $λ$-list assignment of $G$ is a list assignment $L$ of $G$ such that the colour set $\bigcup_{v \in V(G)}L(v)$ can be partitioned into the disjoint union $C_1 \cup C_2 \cup \ldots \cup C_q$ of $q$ sets so that for each $i$ and each vertex $v$ of $G$, $|L(v) \cap C_i| \ge k_i$. We say $G$ is $λ$-choosable if $G$ is $L$-colourable for any $λ$-list assignment $L$ of $G$. The concept of $λ$-choosability puts $k$-colourability and $k$-choosability in the same framework: If $λ= \{k\}$, then $λ$-choosability is equivalent to $k$-choosability; if $λ$ consists of $k $ copies of $1$, then $λ$-choosability is equivalent to $k $-colourability. If $G$ is $λ$-choosable, then $G$ is $k_λ$-colourable. On the other hand, there are $k_λ$-colourable graphs that are not $λ$-choosable, provided that $λ$ contains an integer larger than $1$. Let $φ(λ)$ be the minimum number of vertices in a $k_λ$-colourable non-$λ$-choosable graph. This paper determines the value of $φ(λ)$ for all $λ$.

Sombor-index-like invariants of some graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Sombor index (SO) is a vertex-degree-based graph invariant, defined as the sum over all pairs of adjacent vertices of $\sqrt{d_i^2+d_j^2}$, where $d_i$ is the degree of the $i$-th vertex. It has been conceived using geometric considerations. Recently, a series of new SO-like degree-based graph invariants (denoted by $SO_1, SO_2,..., SO_6$) is taken into consideration, when the geometric background of several classical topological indices (Zagreb, Albertson) has considered. In this paper, we compute and study these new indices for some graphs, cactus chains and polymers.

Bounding the number of odd paths in planar graphs via convex optimization
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $N_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$ vertex planar graph. The problem of bounding this function for various graphs $H$ has been extensively studied since the 70's. A special case that received a lot of attention recently is when $H$ is the path on $2m+1$ vertices, denoted $P_{2m+1}$. Our main result in this paper is that $$ N_{\mathcal{P}}(n,P_{2m+1})=O(m^{-m}n^{m+1})\;.$$ This improves upon the previously best known bound by a factor $e^{m}$, which is best possible up to the hidden constant, and makes a significant step towards resolving conjectures of Gosh et al. and of Cox and Martin. The proof uses graph theoretic arguments together with (simple) arguments from the theory of convex optimization.

Various bounds on the minimum number of arcs in a $k$-dicritical digraph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The dichromatic number $\vecχ(G)$ of a digraph $G$ is the least integer $k$ such that $G$ can be partitioned into $k$ acyclic digraphs. A digraph is $k$-dicritical if $\vecχ(G) = k$ and each proper subgraph $H$ of $G$ satisfies $\vecχ(H) \leq k-1$. %An oriented graph is a digraph with no cycle of length $2$. We prove various bounds on the minimum number of arcs in a $k$-dicritical digraph, a structural result on $k$-dicritical digraphs and a result on list-dicolouring. We characterise $3$-dicritical digraphs $G$ with $(k-1)|V(G)| + 1$ arcs. For $k \geq 4$, we characterise $k$-dicritical digraphs $G$ on at least $k+1$ vertices and with $(k-1)|V(G)| + k-3$ arcs, generalising a result of Dirac. We prove that, for $k \geq 5$, every $k$-dicritical digraph $G$ has at least $(k-1/2 - 1/(k-1)) |V(G)| - k(1/2 - 1/(k-1))$ arcs, which is the best known lower bound. We prove that the number of connected components induced by the vertices of degree $2(k-1)$ of a $k$-dicritical digraph is at most the number of connected components in the rest of the digraph, generalising a result of Stiebitz. Finally, we generalise a Theorem of Thomassen on list-chromatic number of undirected graphs to list-dichromatic number of digraphs.

5-Coloring Reconfiguration of Planar Graphs with No Short Odd Cycles
Published in Journal of Graph Theory. Vol. 105(4). April 2024. pp. 670-679 • View PublicationBIB
The coloring reconfiguration graph $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ has as its vertex set all the proper $k$-colorings of $G$, and two vertices in $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ are adjacent if their corresponding $k$-colorings differ on a single vertex. Cereceda conjectured that if an $n$-vertex graph $G$ is $d$-degenerate and $k\geq d+2$, then the diameter of $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ is $O(n^2)$. Bousquet and Heinrich proved that if $G$ is planar and bipartite, then the diameter of $\mathcal{C}_5(G)$ is $O(n^2)$. (This proves Cereceda's Conjecture for every such graph with degeneracy 3.) They also highlighted the particular case of Cereceda's Conjecture when $G$ is planar and has no 3-cycles. As a partial solution to this problem, we show that the diameter of $\mathcal{C}_5(G)$ is $O(n^2)$ for every planar graph $G$ with no 3-cycles and no 5-cycles.

Further results on outer independent $2$-rainbow dominating functions of graphs
Published in RAIRO - Operations Research (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a graph. A function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{P}(\{1,2\})$ is a $2$-rainbow dominating function if for every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=\emptyset$, $f\big{(}N(v)\big{)}=\{1,2\}$. An outer-independent $2$-rainbow dominating function (OI$2$RD function) of $G$ is a $2$-rainbow dominating function $f$ for which the set of all $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=\emptyset$ is independent. The outer independent $2$-rainbow domination number (OI$2$RD number) $γ_{oir2}(G)$ is the minimum weight of an OI$2$RD function of $G$. In this paper, we first prove that $n/2$ is a lower bound on the OI$2$RD number of a connected claw-free graph of order $n$ and characterize all such graphs for which the equality holds, solving an open problem given in an earlier paper. In addition, a study of this parameter for some graph products is carried out. In particular, we give a closed (resp. an exact) formula for the OI$2$RD number of rooted (resp. corona) product graphs and prove upper bounds on this parameter for the Cartesian product and direct product of two graphs.

Plabic links, quivers, and skein relations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study relations between cluster algebra invariants and link invariants. First, we show that several constructions of positroid links (permutation links, Richardson links, grid diagram links, plabic graph links) give rise to isotopic links. For a subclass of permutations arising from concave curves, we also provide isotopies with the corresponding Coxeter links. Second, we associate a point count polynomial to an arbitrary locally acyclic quiver. We conjecture an equality between the top $a$-degree coefficient of the HOMFLY polynomial of a plabic graph link and the point count polynomial of its planar dual quiver. We prove this conjecture for leaf recurrent plabic graphs, which includes reduced plabic graphs and plabic fences as special cases.

Metric Dimension of a Diagonal Family of Generalized Hamming Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Classical Hamming graphs are Cartesian products of complete graphs, and two vertices are adjacent if they differ in exactly one coordinate. Motivated by connections to unitary Cayley graphs, we consider a generalization where two vertices are adjacent if they have no coordinate in common. Metric dimension of classical Hamming graphs is known asymptotically, but, even in the case of hypercubes, few exact values have been found. In contrast, we determine the metric dimension for the entire diagonal family of $3$-dimensional generalized Hamming graphs. Our approach is constructive and made possible by first characterizing resolving sets in terms of forbidden subgraphs of an auxiliary edge-colored hypergraph.

The Cheeger Inequality and Coboundary Expansion: Beyond Constant Coefficients
The Cheeger constant of a graph, or equivalently its coboundary expansion, quantifies the expansion of the graph. This notion assumes an implicit choice of a coefficient group, namely, $\mathbb{F}_2$. In this paper, we study Cheeger-type inequalities for graphs endowed with a generalized coefficient group, called a sheaf; this is motivated by applications to cosystolic expansion and locally testable codes. We prove that a graph is a good spectral expander if and only if it has good coboundary expansion relative to any (resp. some) constant sheaf, or equivalently, relative to any `ordinary' coefficient group. We moreover show that sheaves that are close to being constant in a well-defined sense are also good coboundary expanders, provided that their underlying graph is an expander, thus giving the first example of good coboundary expansion in non-cosntant sheaves on sparse graphs. By contrast, we observe that for general sheaves on graphs, it is impossible to relate the expansion of the graph and the coboundary expansion of the sheaf. We specialize our results to sheaves on (finite) spherical buildings. Specifically, we show that the normalized second eigenvalue of the (weighted) graph underlying a $q$-thick $d$-dimensional spherical building is $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{q}-3d})$ if $q>9d^2$. Plugging this into our results about coboundary expansion gives explicit lower bounds on the coboundary expansion of some constant and non-constant sheaves on spherical buildings; for a fixed dimension $d$, the bounds approach a constant as the thickness $q$ grows. Along the way, we prove a new version of the Expander Mixing Lemma for $r$-partite weighted graphs.

All polytopes are coset geometries: characterizing automorphism groups of k-orbit abstract polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Abstract polytopes generalize the classical notion of convex polytopes to more general combinatorial structures. The most studied ones are regular and chiral polytopes, as it is well-known, they can be constructed as coset geometries from their automorphism groups. This is also known to be true for 2- and 3- orbit 3-polytopes. In this paper we show that every abstract $n$-polytope can be constructed as a coset geometry. This construction is done by giving a characterization, in terms of generators, relations and intersection conditions, of the automorphism group of a $k$-orbit polytope with given symmetry type graph. Furthermore, we use these results to show that for all $k\neq 2$, there exist $k$-orbit $n$-polytopes with Boolean automorphism groups, for all $n\geq 3$.

On the distance & distance (signless) Laplacian spectra of non-commuting graphs

Let $Z(G)$ be the centre of a finite non-abelian group $G.$ The non-commuting graph of $G$ is a simple undirected graph with vertex set $G\setminus Z(G),$ and two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent if and only if $uv\ne vu.$ In this paper, we investigate the distance, distance (signless) Laplacian spectra of non-commuting graphs of some classes of finite non-abelian groups, and obtain some conditions on a group so that the non-commuting graph is distance, distance (signless) Laplacian integral.

Lambda Number of the enhanced power graph of a finite group
Published • View PublicationBIB
The enhanced power graph of a finite group $G$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertex set is $G$ and two distinct vertices $x, y$ are adjacent if $x, y \in \langle z \rangle$ for some $z \in G$. An $L( 2,1)$-labeling of graph $Γ$ is an integer labeling of $V(Γ)$ such that adjacent vertices have labels that differ by at least $2$ and vertices distance $2$ apart have labels that differ by at least $1$. The $λ$-number of $Γ$, denoted by $λ(Γ)$, is the minimum range over all $L( 2,1)$-labelings. In this article, we study the lambda number of the enhanced power graph $\mathcal{P}_E(G)$ of the group $G$. This paper extends the corresponding results, obtained in [22], of the lambda number of power graphs to enhanced power graphs. Moreover, for a non-trivial simple group $G$ of order $n$, we prove that $λ(\mathcal{P}_E(G)) = n$ if and only if $G$ is not a cyclic group of order $n\geq 3$. Finally, we compute the exact value of $λ(\mathcal{P}_E(G))$ if $G$ is a finite nilpotent group.

A note on the distance spectra of co-centralizer graphs
Let $G$ be a finite non abelian group. The centralizer graph of $G$ is a simple undirected graph $Γ_{cent}(G)$, whose vertex set consists of proper centralizers of $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their cardinalities are identical [6]. We call the complement of the centralizer graph as the co-centralizer graph. In this paper, we investigate the distance, distance (signless) Laplacian spectra of co-centralizer graphs of some classes of finite non-abelian groups, and obtain some conditions on a group so that the co-centralizer graph is distance, distance (signless) Laplacian integral.
Non-degenerate Hypergraphs with Exponentially Many Extremal Constructions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For every integer $t \ge 0$, denote by $F_5^t$ the hypergraph on vertex set $\{1,2,\ldots, 5+t\}$ with hyperedges $\{123,124\} \cup \{34k : 5 \le k \le 5+t\}$. We determine $\mathrm{ex}(n,F_5^t)$ for every $t\ge 0$ and sufficiently large $n$ and characterize the extremal $F_5^t$-free hypergraphs. In particular, if $n$ satisfies certain divisibility conditions, then the extremal $F_5^t$-free hypergraphs are exactly the balanced complete tripartite hypergraphs with additional hyperedges inside each of the three parts $(V_1,V_2,V_3)$ in the partition; each part $V_i$ spans a $(|V_i|,3,2,t)$-design. This generalizes earlier work of Frankl and Füredi on the Turán number of $F_5:=F_5^0$. Our results extend a theory of Erdős and Simonovits about the extremal constructions for certain fixed graphs. In particular, the hypergraphs $F_5^{6t}$, for $t\geq 1$, are the first examples of hypergraphs with exponentially many extremal constructions and positive Turán density.
On the power graph of a certain gyrogroup
The power graph $P(G)$ of a group $G$ is a simple graph with the vertex set $G$ such that two distinct vertices $u,v \in G$ are adjacent in $P(G)$ if and only if $u^m = v$ or $v^m = u$, for some $m \in \mathbb{N}$. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of a power graph for gyrogroups. Using this, we investigate the combinatorial properties of a certain gyrogroup, say $G(n)$, of order $2^n$ for $n \geq 3$. In particular, we determine the Hamiltonicity and planarity of the power graph of $G(n)$. Consequently, we calculate distant properties, resolving polynomial, Hosoya and reciprocal Hosoya polynomials, characteristic polynomials, and the spectral radius of the power graph of $G(n)$.

Generating non-jumps from a known one
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $r\ge 2$ be an integer. The real number $α\in [0,1]$ is a jump for $r$ if there exists a constant $c > 0$ such that for any $ε>0$ and any integer $m \geq r$, there exists an integer $n_0(ε, m)$ satisfying any $r$-uniform graph with $n\ge n_0(ε, m)$ vertices and density at least $α+ε$ contains a subgraph with $m$ vertices and density at least $α+c$. A result of Erdős, Stone and Simonovits implies that every $α\in [0,1)$ is a jump for $r=2$. Erdős asked whether the same is true for $r\ge 3$. Frankl and Rödl gave a negative answer by showing that $1-\frac{1}{l^{r-1}}$ is not a jump for $r$ if $r\ge 3$ and $l>2r$. After that, more non-jumps are found using a method of Frankl and Rödl. In this note, we show a method to construct maps $f \colon [0,1] \to [0,1]$ that preserve non-jumps, if $α$ is a non-jump for $r$ given by the method of Frankl and Rödl, then $f(α)$ is also a non-jump for $r$. We use these maps to study hypergraph Turán densities and answer a question posed by Grosu.

A solution to Babai's problem on digraphs with non-diagonalizable adjacency matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
The fact that the adjacency matrix of every finite graph is diagonalizable plays a fundamental role in spectral graph theory. Since this fact does not hold in general for digraphs, it is natural to ask whether it holds for digraphs with certain level of symmetry. Interest on this question dates back to early 1980s, when P.~J.~Cameron asked for the existence of arc-transitive digraphs with non-diagonalizable adjacency matrix. This was answered in the affirmative by L.~Babai in 1985. Then Babai posed the open problem of constructing a 2-arc-transitive digraph and a vertex-primitive digraph whose adjacency matrices are not diagonalizable. In this paper, we solve Babai's problem by constructing an infinite family of $s$-arc-transitive digraphs for each integer $s\geq2$, and an infinite family of vertex-primitive digraphs, respectively, both of whose adjacency matrices are non-diagonalizable.

Two New Characterizations of Path Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Path graphs are intersection graphs of paths in a tree. We start from the characterization of path graphs by Monma and Wei [C.L.~Monma,~and~V.K.~Wei, Intersection Graphs of Paths in a Tree, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 41:2 (1986) 141--181] and we reduce it to some 2-colorings subproblems, obtaining the first characterization that directly leads to a polynomial recognition algorithm. Then we introduce the collection of the attachedness graphs of a graph and we exhibit a list of minimal forbidden 2-edge colored subgraphs in each of the attachedness graph.
