Planar graphs without short even cycles are near-bipartite
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 284 (2020), 626-630 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is {\em near-bipartite} if its vertex set can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a forest. It is clear that near-bipartite graphs are $3$-colorable. In this note, we show that planar graphs without cycles of lengths in $\{4, 6, 8\}$ are near-bipartite.

Combinatorial necessary conditions for regular graphs to induce periodic quantum walks
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Volume 673, Pages 259-279 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We derive combinatorial necessary conditions for discrete-time quantum walks defined by regular mixed graphs to be periodic. If the quantum walk is periodic, all the eigenvalues of the time evolution matrices must be algebraic integers. Focusing on this, we explore which ring the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials should belong to. On the other hand, the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of $η$-Hermitian adjacency matrices have combinatorial implications. From these, we can find combinatorial implications in the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of the time evolution matrices, and thus derive combinatorial necessary conditions for mixed graphs to be periodic. For example, if a $k$-regular mixed graph with $n$ vertices is periodic, then $2n/k$ must be an integer. As an application of this work, we determine periodicity of mixed complete graphs and mixed graphs with a prime number of vertices.

Maximal perimeter and maximal width of a convex small polygon
A small polygon is a polygon of unit diameter. The maximal perimeter and the maximal width of a convex small polygon with $n=2^s$ sides are unknown when $s \ge 4$. In this paper, we propose an approach to construct convex small $n$-gons of large perimeter and large width when $n=2^s$ with $s\ge 2$. Assuming the existence of an axis of symmetry, a convex small $n$-gon is described as a composition of $n/2$ and both its perimeter and its width are given as functions of a single variable. By selecting the composition that minimizes the violation of a cycle constraint by a particular solution, the $n$-gons constructed outperform the best $n$-gons found in the literature. For example, for $n=64$, the perimeter and the width obtained are within $10^{-22}$ and $10^{-12}$ of the maximal perimeter and the maximal width, respectively. From our results, it appears that Mossinghoff's conjecture on the diameter graph of a convex small $2^s$-gon with maximal perimeter is not true when $s \ge 4$.
Approximate and exact results for the harmonious chromatic number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graph colorings is a fundamental topic in graph theory that require an assignment of labels (or colors) to vertices or edges subject to various constraints. We focus on the harmonious coloring of a graph, which is a proper vertex coloring such that for every two distinct colors i, j at most one pair of adjacent vertices are colored with i and j. This type of coloring is edge-distinguishing and has potential applications in transportation network, computer network, airway network system. The results presented in this paper fall into two categories: in the first part of the paper we are concerned with the computational aspects of finding a minimum harmonious coloring and in the second part we determine the exact value of the harmonious chromatic number for some particular graphs and classes of graphs. More precisely, in the first part we show that finding a minimum harmonious coloring for arbitrary graphs is APX-hard, the natural greedy algorithm is a $Ω(\sqrt{n})$-approximation, and, moreover, we show a relationship between the vertex cover and the harmonious chromatic number. In the second part we determine the exact value of the harmonious chromatic number for all 3-regular planar graphs of diameter 3, some non-planar regular graphs and cycle-related graphs.

Parallel edges in ribbon graphs and interpolating behavior of partial-duality polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-twuality polynomials. In this paper, we find that when there are enough parallel edges, any multiple graph is a negative answer to the problem 8.7 in their paper [European J. Combin. 95 (2021), 103329]: Is the restricted-orientable partial-Petrial polynomial of an arbitrary ribbon graph even-interpolating? In addition, we also find a counterexample to the conjecture 8.1 of Gross, Mansour and Tucker: If the partial-dual genus polynomial is neither an odd nor an even polynomial, then it is interpolating.

Suffix-connected languages
Published in Theoretical Computer Science 923 (2022), 126-143 • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by a series of papers initiated in 2015 by Berthé et al., we introduce a new condition called suffix-connectedness. We show that the groups generated by the return sets of a uniformly recurrent suffix-connected language lie in a single conjugacy class of subgroups of the free group. Moreover, the rank of the subgroups in this conjugacy class only depends on the number of connected components in the extension graph of the empty word. We also show how to explicitly compute a representative of this conjugacy class using the first order Rauzy graph. Finally, we provide an example of suffix-connected, uniformly recurrent language that contains infinitely many disconnected words.
Perfect matchings, Hamiltonian cycles and edge-colourings in a class of cubic graphs
Published in Ars Math. Contemp. 23, No. 3, #P3.01 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ has the Perfect-Matching-Hamiltonian property (PMH-property) if for each one of its perfect matchings, there is another perfect matching of $G$ such that the union of the two perfect matchings yields a Hamiltonian cycle of $G$. The study of graphs that have the PMH-property, initiated in the 1970s by Las Vergnas and Häggkvist, combines three well-studied properties of graphs, namely matchings, Hamiltonicity and edge-colourings. In this work, we study these concepts for cubic graphs in an attempt to characterise those cubic graphs for which every perfect matching corresponds to one of the colours of a proper 3-edge-colouring of the graph. We discuss that this is equivalent to saying that such graphs are even-2-factorable (E2F), that is, all 2-factors of the graph contain only even cycles. The case for bipartite cubic graphs is trivial, since if $G$ is bipartite then it is E2F. Thus, we restrict our attention to non-bipartite cubic graphs. A sufficient, but not necessary, condition for a cubic graph to be E2F is that it has the PMH-property. The aim of this work is to introduce an infinite family of E2F non-bipartite cubic graphs on two parameters, which we coin papillon graphs, and determine the values of the respective parameters for which these graphs have the PMH-property or are just E2F. We also show that no two papillon graphs with different parameters are isomorphic.
On digraphs with polygonal restricted numerical range
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2020, Cameron et al. introduced the restricted numerical range of a digraph (directed graph) as a tool for characterizing digraphs and studying their algebraic connectivity. In particular, digraphs with a restricted numerical range of a single point, a horizontal line segment, and a vertical line segment were characterized as $k$-imploding stars, directed joins of bidirectional digraphs, and regular tournaments, respectively. In this article, we extend these results by investigating digraphs whose restricted numerical range is a convex polygon in the complex plane. We provide computational methods for identifying these polygonal digraphs and show that these digraphs can be broken into three disjoint classes: normal, restricted-normal, and pseudo-normal digraphs, all of which are closed under the digraph complement. We prove sufficient conditions for normal digraphs and show that the directed join of two normal digraphs results in a restricted-normal digraph. Also, we prove that directed joins are the only restricted-normal digraphs when the order is square-free or twice a square-free number. Finally, we provide methods to construct restricted-normal digraphs that are not directed joins for all orders that are neither square-free nor twice a square-free number.
Excluding a Planar Matching Minor in Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Matching minors are a specialisation of minors fit for the study of graph with perfect matchings. The notion of matching minors has been used to give a structural description of bipartite graphs on which the number of perfect matchings can becomputed efficiently, based on a result of Little, by McCuaig et al. in 1999.In this paper we generalise basic ideas from the graph minor series by Robertson and Seymour to the setting of bipartite graphs with perfect matchings. We introducea version of Erdos-Posa property for matching minors and find a direct link between this property and planarity. From this, it follows that a class of bipartite graphs withperfect matchings has bounded perfect matching width if and only if it excludes aplanar matching minor. We also present algorithms for bipartite graphs of bounded perfect matching width for a matching version of the disjoint paths problem, matching minor containment, and for counting the number of perfect matchings. From our structural results, we obtain that recognising whether a bipartite graphGcontains afixed planar graphHas a matching minor, and that counting the number of perfect matchings of a bipartite graph that excludes a fixed planar graph as a matching minor are both polynomial time solvable.

3-facial edge-coloring of plane graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An $\ell$-facial edge-coloring of a plane graph is a coloring of its edges such that any two edges at distance at most $\ell$ on a boundary walk of any face receive distinct colors. It is the edge-coloring variant of the $\ell$-facial vertex coloring, which arose as a generalization of the well-known cyclic coloring. It is conjectured that at most $3\ell + 1$ colors suffice for an $\ell$-facial edge-coloring of any plane graph. The conjecture has only been confirmed for $\ell \le 2$, and in this paper, we prove its validity for $\ell = 3$.
Component behaviour and excess of random bipartite graphs near the critical point
Published • View PublicationBIB
The binomial random bipartite graph $G(n,n,p)$ is the random graph formed by taking two partition classes of size $n$ and including each edge between them independently with probability $p$. It is known that this model exhibits a similar phase transition as that of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ as $p$ passes the critical point of $\frac{1}{n}$. We study the component structure of this model near to the critical point. We show that, as with $G(n,p)$, for an appropriate range of $p$ there is a unique `giant' component and we determine asymptotically its order and excess. We also give more precise results for the distribution of the number of components of a fixed order in this range of $p$. These results rely on new bounds for the number of bipartite graphs with a fixed number of vertices and edges, which we also derive.

Towards the 0-statement of the Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study asymmetric Ramsey properties of the random graph $G_{n,p}$. Let $r \in \mathbb{N}$ and $H_1, \ldots, H_r$ be graphs. We write $G_{n,p} \to (H_1, \ldots, H_r)$ to denote the property that whenever we colour the edges of $G_{n,p}$ with colours from the set $[r] := \{1, \ldots, r\}$ there exists $i \in [r]$ and a copy of $H_i$ in $G_{n,p}$ monochromatic in colour $i$. There has been much interest in determining the asymptotic threshold function for this property. Rödl and Ruciński determined the threshold function for the general symmetric case; that is, when $H_1 = \cdots = H_r$. A conjecture of Kohayakawa and Kreuter, if true, would fully resolve the asymmetric problem. Recently, the 1-statement of this conjecture was confirmed by Mousset, Nenadov and Samotij. Building on work of Marciniszyn, Skokan, Spöhel and Steger, we reduce the 0-statement of Kohayakawa and Kreuter's conjecture to a certain deterministic subproblem. To demonstrate the potential of this approach, we show this subproblem can be resolved for almost all pairs of regular graphs. This therefore resolves the 0-statement for all such pairs of graphs.

On the Number of Edges of the Frechet Mean and Median Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The availability of large datasets composed of graphs creates an unprecedented need to invent novel tools in statistical learning for graph-valued random variables. To characterize the average of a sample of graphs, one can compute the sample Frechet mean and median graphs. In this paper, we address the following foundational question: does a mean or median graph inherit the structural properties of the graphs in the sample? An important graph property is the edge density; we establish that edge density is an hereditary property, which can be transmitted from a graph sample to its sample Frechet mean or median graphs, irrespective of the method used to estimate the mean or the median. Because of the prominence of the Frechet mean in graph-valued machine learning, this novel theoretical result has some significant practical consequences.

Lattice Conditional Independence Models and Hibi Ideals
Published in Transactions of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 9, Issue 1, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
Lattice Conditional Independence models are a class of models developed first for the Gaussian case in which a distributive lattice classifies all the conditional independence statements. The main result is that these models can equivalently be described via a transitive directed acyclic graph (TDAG) in which, as is normal for causal models, the conditional independence is in terms of conditioning on ancestors in the graph. We demonstrate that a parallel stream of research in algebra, the theory of Hibi ideals, not only maps directly to the LCI models but gives a vehicle to generalise the theory from the linear Gaussian case. Given a distributive lattice (i) each conditional independence statement is associated with a Hibi relation defined on the lattice, (ii) the directed graph is given by chains in the lattice which correspond to chains of conditional independence, (iii) the elimination ideal of product terms in the chains gives the Hibi ideal and (iv) the TDAG can be recovered from a special bipartite graph constructed via the Alexander dual of the Hibi ideal. It is briefly demonstrated that there are natural applications to statistical log-linear models, time series, and Shannon information flow.
Ordinary and symbolic powers of edge ideals of weighted oriented graphs

Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a weighted oriented graph and $I(\mathcal{D})$ be its edge ideal. In this paper, we show that all the symbolic and ordinary powers of $I(\mathcal{D})$ coincide when $\mathcal{D}$ is a weighted oriented certain class of tree. Finally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality of ordinary and symbolic powers of naturally oriented lines.

A slightly better bound on the crossing number in terms of the pair-crossing number
The crossing number of a graph $G$, ${\mbox{cr}}(G)$, is the minimum number of crossings, the pair-crossing number, ${\mbox{pcr}}(G)$, is the minimum number of pairs of crossing edges over all drawings of $G$. In this note we show that ${\mbox{cr}}(G)=O({\mbox{pcr}}(G)^{3/2}\log{\mbox{pcr}}(G))$, which is an improvement of the result of Matoušek, by a log factor.

Graphs whose all maximal induced forests are of the same order
In this paper, a new concept in graphs namely well-f-coveredness is introduced. We characterize all graphs with such property, whose maximum induced forests are of boundary order. Also we prove several propositions concerning with obtaining large well-f-covered graphs from smaller ones. By the way, some interesting classes of well-f-covered graphs are characterized.

Nordhaus-Gaddum type inequality for the fractional matching number of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The fractional matching number of a graph G, is the maximum size of a fractional matching of G. The following sharp lower bounds for a graph G of order n are proved, and all extremal graphs are characterized in this paper. (1)The sum of the fractional matching number of a graph G and the fractional matching number of its complement is not less than n/2 , where n is not less than 2. (2) If G and its complement are non-empty, then the sum of the fractional matching number of a graph G and the fractional matching number of its complement is not less than (n+1)/2, where n is not less than 28. (3) If G and its complement have no isolated vertices, then the sum of the fractional matching number of a graph G and the fractional matching number of its complement is not less than (n+4)/2, where n is not less than 28.

A note on long cycles in sparse random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $L_{c,n}$ denote the size of the longest cycle in $G(n,{c}/{n})$, $c>1$ constant. We show that there exists a continuous function $f(c)$ such that $ L_{c,n}/n \to f(c)$ a.s. for $c\geq 20$, thus extending a result of the author and Frieze to smaller values of $c$. Thereafter, for $c\geq 20$, we determine the limit of the probability that $G(n,c/n)$ contains cycles of every length between the length of its shortest and its longest cycles as $n\to \infty$.
