Spectrum of Strongly Regular Graphs under Graph Operators
In this paper, we show that if G is strongly regular then the Gallai graph and the anti-Gallai graph of G are edge-regular. We also identify conditions under which the Gallai and anti-Gallai graphs are themselves strongly regular, as well as conditions under which they are 2-connected. We include also a number of concrete examples and a discussion of spectral properties of the Gallai and anti-Gallai graphs.

Multivariate blowup-polynomials of graphs
In recent joint work (2021), we introduced a novel multivariate polynomial attached to every metric space - in particular, to every finite simple connected graph $G$ - and showed it has several attractive properties. First, it is multi-affine and real-stable (leading to a hitherto unstudied delta-matroid for each graph $G$). Second, the polynomial specializes to (a transform of) the characteristic polynomial $χ_{D_G}$ of the distance matrix $D_G$; as well as recovers the entire graph, where $χ_{D_G}$ cannot do so. Third, the polynomial encodes the determinants of a family of graphs formed from $G$, called the blowups of $G$. In this short note, we exhibit the applicability of these tools and techniques to other graph-matrices and their characteristic polynomials. As a particular case, we will see that the adjacency characteristic polynomial $χ_{A_G}$ is in fact the shadow of a richer multivariate blowup-polynomial, which is similarly multi-affine and real-stable. Moreover, this polynomial encodes not only the aforementioned three properties, but also yields additional information for specific families of graphs.

Pattern Recognition on Oriented Matroids: Symmetric Cycles in the Hypercube Graphs. V
We consider decompositions of topes of the oriented matroid realizable as the arrangement of coordinate hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^{2^t}$, with respect to a distinguished symmetric $2\cdot 2^t$-cycle in its hypercube graph of topes $\boldsymbol{H}(2^t,2)$. We seek interpretations of such decompositions in the context of subset families on the ground set $E_t:=\{1,\ldots,t\}$ and of the families of their blocking sets, in the context of clutters on $E_t$ and of their blockers.

A Matrix Trickle-Down Theorem on Simplicial Complexes and Applications to Sampling Colorings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the natural Glauber dynamics mixes rapidly and generates a random proper edge-coloring of a graph with maximum degree $Δ$ whenever the number of colors is at least $q\geq (\frac{10}{3} + ε)Δ$, where $ε>0$ is arbitrary and the maximum degree satisfies $Δ\geq C$ for a constant $C = C(ε)$ depending only on $ε$. For edge-colorings, this improves upon prior work \cite{Vig99, CDMPP19} which show rapid mixing when $q\geq (\frac{11}{3}-ε_0 ) Δ$, where $ε_0 \approx 10^{-5}$ is a small fixed constant. At the heart of our proof, we establish a matrix trickle-down theorem, generalizing Oppenheim's influential result, as a new technique to prove that a high dimensional simplical complex is a local spectral expander.

Lambda Numbers of Finite $p$-Groups
An $L(2,1)$-labelling of a finite graph $Γ$ is a function that assigns integer values to the vertices $V(Γ)$ of $Γ$ (colouring of $V(Γ)$ by ${\mathbb{Z}}$) so that the absolute difference of two such values is at least $2$ for adjacent vertices and is at least $1$ for vertices which are precisely distance $2$ apart. The lambda number $λ(Γ)$ of $Γ$ measures the least number of integers needed for such a labelling (colouring). A power graph $Γ_G$ of a finite group $G$ is a graph with vertex set as the elements of $G$ and two vertices are joined by an edge if and only if one of them is a positive integer power of the other. It is known that $λ(Γ_G) \geq |G|$ for any finite group. In this paper we show that if $G$ is a finite group of a prime power order, then $λ(Γ_G) = |G|$ if and only if $G$ is neither cyclic nor a generalized quaternion $2$-group. This settles a partial classification of finite groups achieving the lower bound of lambda number.

On minimal doubly resolving sets in graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two vertices u,v of connected graph G are doubly resolved by x,y\in V(G)if d(v; x)-d(u; x)\neq d(v; y)-d(u; y): A set W of vertices of the graph G is a doubly resolving set for G if every two distinct vertices of G are doubly resolved by some two vertices of W. ψ(G) is the minimum cardinality of a doubly resolving set for the graph G. The aim of this paper is to investigate doubly resolving sets in graphs. An upper bound for Ψ(G) is obtained in terms of order and diameter of G. ψ(G) is computed for some important graphs and all graphs G of order n with the property ψ(G)=n-1 are characterized.

Discrete-to-Continuous Extensions: Lovász extension, optimizations and eigenvalue problems
In this paper, we use various versions of Lovász extension to systematically derive continuous formulations of problems from discrete mathematics. This will take place in the following context: (1) For combinatorial optimization problems in quotient form, we systematically develop equivalent continuous versions, thereby making tools from convex optimization, fractional programming and more general continuous algorithms like the stochastic subgradient method available for such optimization problems. (2) For some combinatorial quantities like Cheeger-type constants, we suggest a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for a pair of Lovász extensions of certain functions, which encodes certain combinatorial structures. This theory has several applications to quantitative and combinatorial problems, including: (a) The equivalent continuous representations for the max $k$-cut problem, various Cheeger sets and isoperimetric constants are constructed. This also initiates a study of Dirichlet and Neumann 1-Laplacians on graphs, in which the nodal domain property and Cheeger-type equalities are presented. (b) Also, we derive a new equivalent continuous representation of the graph independence number, which can be compared with the Motzkin-Straus theorem. More importantly, an equivalent continuous optimization for the chromatic number is provided, which seems to be the first continuous representation of the graph vertex coloring number. We provide the first continuous reformulation of the frustration index in signed networks, and we find a connection to the so-called modularity measure. Graph matching numbers, submodular vertex covers and multiway partition problems can also be studied in this framework.
Normalized Sombor indices as complexity measures of random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We perform a detailed computational study of the recently introduced Sombor indices on random graphs. Specifically, we apply Sombor indices on three models of random graphs: Erdös-Rényi graphs, random geometric graphs, and bipartite random graphs. Within a statistical random matrix theory approach, we show that the average values of Sombor indices, normalized to the order of the graph, scale with the graph average degree. Moreover, we discuss the application of average Sombor indices as complexity measures of random graphs and, as a consequence, we show that selected normalized Sombor indices are highly correlated with the Shannon entropy of the eigenvectors of the graph adjacency matrix.

Which graphs can be counted in $C_4$-free graphs?
Published • View PublicationBIB
For which graphs $F$ is there a sparse $F$-counting lemma in $C_4$-free graphs? We are interested in identifying graphs $F$ with the property that, roughly speaking, if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $C_4$-free graph with on the order of $n^{3/2}$ edges, then the density of $F$ in $G$, after a suitable normalization, is approximately at least the density of $F$ in an $ε$-regular approximation of $G$. In recent work, motivated by applications in extremal and additive combinatorics, we showed that $C_5$ has this property. Here we construct a family of graphs with the property.

Understanding lettericity I: a structural hierarchy
Lettericity is a graph parameter introduced by Petkovšek in 2002 in order to study well-quasi-orderability under the induced subgraph relation. In the world of permutations, geometric griddability was independently introduced in 2013 by Albert, Atkinson, Bouvel, Ruškuc and Vatter, partly as an enumerative tool. Despite their independent origins, those two notions share a connection: they highlight very similar structural features in their respective objects. The fact that those structural features arose separately on two different occasions makes them very interesting to study in their own right. In the present paper, we explore the notion of lettericity through the lens of "minimal obstructions", i.e., minimal classes of graphs of unbounded lettericity, and identify an infinite collection of such classes. We also discover an intriguing structural hierarchy that arises in the study of lettericity and that of griddability.
On the number of heterochromatic trees in nice and beautiful colourings of complete graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce classes of edge-colourings of the complete graph -- that we call nice and beautiful -- and study how many heterochromatic spanning trees appear under such colourings. We prove that if the colouring is nice, there is at least a quadratic number of different heterochromatic trees; and if the colouring is beautiful there is an exponential number of different such trees.

Solving the dimer problem of the vertex-edge graph of a cubic graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$, and $L(G)$ be the line graph of $G$, which has vertex set $E(G)$ and two vertices $e$ and $f$ of $L(G)$ is adjacent if $e$ and $f$ is incident in $G$. The vertex-edge graph $M(G)$ of $G$ has vertex set $V(G)\cup E(G)$ and edge set $E(L(G))\cup \{ue,ve|\ \forall\ e=uv\in E(G)\}$. In this paper, by a combinatorial technique, we show that if $G$ is a connected cubic graph with an even number of edges, then the number of dimer coverings of $M(G)$ equals $2^{|V(G)|/2+1}3^{|V(G)|/4}$. As an application, we obtain the exact solution of the dimer problem of the weighted solicate network obtained from the hexagonal lattice in the context of statistical physics.

The maximum number of 10- and 12-cycles in a planar graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a fixed planar graph $H$, let $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex planar graph. In the case when $H$ is a cycle, the asymptotic value of $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_m)$ is currently known for $m\in\{3,4,5,6,8\}$. In this note, we extend this list by establishing $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_{10})\sim(n/5)^5$ and $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_{12})\sim(n/6)^6$. We prove this by answering the following question for $m\in\{5,6\}$, which is interesting in its own right: which probability mass $μ$ on the edges of some clique maximizes the probability that $m$ independent samples from $μ$ form an $m$-cycle?

New Turan-type bounds for Johnson graphs
In this paper, we consider the Johnson's graphs. We study the extremal properties of the Johnson's graphs. Namely, we investigate the number of edges in an arbitrary subgraph of this graph. Namely, in this article we prove analogs of Turan's 1941 theorem.

On the difference between proximity and other distance parameters in triangle-free graphs and $C_4$-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The average distance of a vertex $v$ of a connected graph $G$ is the arithmetic mean of the distances from $v$ to all other vertices of $G$. The proximity $π(G)$ and the remoteness $ρ(G)$ of $G$ are the minimum and the maximum of the average distances of the vertices of $G$. In this paper, we give upper bounds on the difference between the remoteness and proximity, the diameter and proximity, and the radius and proximity of a triangle-free graph with given order and minimum degree. We derive the latter two results by first proving lower bounds on the proximity in terms of order, minimum degree and either diameter or radius. Our bounds are sharp apart from an additive constant. We also obtain corresponding bounds for $C_4$-free graphs.

The Chromatic Quasisymmetric Class Function of a Digraph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a quasisymmetric class function associated with a group acting on a double poset or on a directed graph. The latter is a generalization of the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a digraph introduced by Ellzey, while the latter is a generalization of a quasisymmetric function introduced by Grinberg. We prove representation-theoretic analogues of classical and recent results, including $F$-positivity, and combinatorial reciprocity theorems. We also deduce results for orbital quasisymmetric functions. We also study a generalization of the notion of strongly flawless sequences.
Avoiding large squares in trees and planar graphs
The Thue number $π(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors needed to color $G$ without creating a square on a path of $G$. For a graph class $C$, $π(C)$ is the supremum of $π(G)$ over the graphs $G\in C$. The Thue number has been investigated for famous minor-closed classes: $π(tree)=4$, $7\leπ(outerplanar)\le12$, and $11\leπ(planar)\le768$. Following a suggestion of Grytczuk, we consider the generalized parameters $π_k(C)$ such that only squares of period at least $k$ must be avoided. Thus, $π(C)=π_1(C)$. We show that $π_5(tree)=2$, $π_2(tree)=3$, and $π_k(planar)\ge11$ for every fixed $k$.

Van Lint-MacWilliams' conjecture and maximum cliques in Cayley graphs over finite fields
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 192(2022), Paper No. 105667, 23pp • View PublicationBIB
A well-known conjecture due to van Lint and MacWilliams states that if $A$ is a subset of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ such that $0,1 \in A$, $|A|=q$, and $a-b$ is a square for each $a,b \in A$, then $A$ must be the subfield $\mathbb{F}_q$. This conjecture is often phrased in terms of the maximum cliques in Paley graphs. It was first proved by Blokhuis and later extended by Sziklai to generalized Paley graphs. In this paper, we give a new proof of the conjecture and its variants, and show this Erdős-Ko-Rado property of Paley graphs extends to a larger family of Cayley graphs, which we call Peisert-type graphs, resolving conjectures by Mullin and Yip.

Perfect Roman domination in middle graphs
The middle graph $M(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph obtained by subdividing each edge of $G$ exactly once and joining all these newly introduced vertices of adjacent edges of $G$. A perfect Roman dominating function on a graph $G$ is a function $f : V(G) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ satisfying the condition that every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=0$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex $u$ for which $f(u)=2$. The weight of a perfect Roman dominating function $f$ is the sum of weights of vertices. The perfect Roman domination number is the minimum weight of a perfect Roman dominating function on $G$. In this paper, we give a characterization of middle graphs with equal Roman domination and perfect Roman domination numbers.
