We study the sets of inertias achieved by Laplacian matrices of weighted signed graphs. First we characterize signed graphs with a unique Laplacian inertia. Then we show that there is a sufficiently small perturbation of the nonzero weights on the edges of any connected weighted signed graph so that all eigenvalues of its Laplacian matrix are simple. Next, we give upper bounds on the number of possible Laplacian inertias for signed graphs with a fixed flexibility $τ$ (a combinatorial parameter of signed graphs), and show that these bounds are sharp for an infinite family of signed graphs. Finally, we provide upper bounds for the number of possible Laplacian inertias of signed graphs in terms of the number of vertices.

A matroid is Gorenstein if its toric variety is. Hibi, Lasoń, Matsuda, Michałek, and Vodička provided a full graph-theoretic classification of Gorenstein matroids associated to simple graphs. We extend this classification to multigraphs.
Three-weight codes over rings and strongly walk regular graphs

We construct strongly walk-regular graphs as coset graphs of the duals of codes with three non-zero homogeneous weights over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^m},$ for $p$ a prime, and more generally over chain rings of depth $m$, and with a residue field of size $q$, a prime power. Infinite families of examples are built from Kerdock and generalized Teichmüller codes. As a byproduct, we give an alternative proof that the Kerdock code is nonlinear.

A subset $D$ of the vertex set $V$ of a graph $G$ is called an $[1,k]$-dominating set if every vertex from $V-D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex and at most $k$ vertices of $D$. A $[1,k]$-dominating set with the minimum number of vertices is called a $γ_{[1,k]}$-set and the number of its vertices is the $[1,k]$-domination number $γ_{[1,k]}(G)$ of $G$. In this short note we show that the decision problem whether $γ_{[1,k]}(G)=n$ is an $NP$-hard problem, even for bipartite graphs. Also, a simple construction of a bipartite graph $G$ of order $n$ satisfying $γ_{[1,k]}(G)=n$ is given for every integer $n\geq (k+1)(2k+3)$.
Some observations on the smallest adjacency eigenvalue of a graph
In this paper, we discuss various connections between the smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph and its structure. There are several techniques for obtaining upper bounds on the smallest eigenvalue, and some of them are based on Rayleigh quotients, Cauchy interlacing using induced subgraphs, and Haemers interlacing with vertex partitions and quotient matrices. In this paper, we are interested in obtaining lower bounds for the smallest eigenvalue. Motivated by results on line graphs and generalized line graphs, we show how graph decompositions can be used to obtain such lower bounds.

Persistent spectral graph

Persistent homology is constrained to purely topological persistence while multiscale graphs account only for geometric information. This work introduces persistent spectral theory to create a unified low-dimensional multiscale paradigm for revealing topological persistence and extracting geometric shape from high-dimensional datasets. For a point-cloud dataset, a filtration procedure is used to generate a sequence of chain complexes and associated families of simplicial complexes and chains, from which we construct persistent combinatorial Laplacian matrices. We show that a full set of topological persistence can be completely recovered from the harmonic persistent spectra, i.e., the spectra that have zero eigenvalues, of the persistent combinatorial Laplacian matrices. However, non-harmonic spectra of the Laplacian matrices induced by the filtration offer another power tool for data analysis, modeling, and prediction. In this work, non-harmonic persistent spectra are successfully devised to analyze the structure and stability of fullerenes and predict the B-factors of a protein, which cannot be straightforwardly extracted from the current persistent homology. Extensive numerical experiments indicate the tremendous potential of the proposed persistent spectral analysis in data science.
Defective Ramsey Numbers in Graph Classes

Given a graph $G$, a $k$-sparse $j$-set is a set of $j$ vertices inducing a subgraph with maximum degree at most $k$. A $k$-dense $i$-set is a set of $i$ vertices that is $k$-sparse in the complement of $G$. As a generalization of Ramsey numbers, the $k$-defective Ramsey number $R_k^{\mathcal{G}}(i,j)$ for the graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is defined as the smallest natural number $n$ such that all graphs on $n$ vertices in the class $\mathcal{G}$ have either a $k$-dense $i$-set or a $k$-sparse $j$-set. In this paper, we examine $R_k^{\mathcal{G}}(i,j)$ where $\mathcal{G}$ represents various graph classes. In forests and cographs, we give formulas for all defective Ramsey numbers. In cacti, bipartite graphs and split graphs, we provide defective Ramsey numbers in most of the cases and point out open questions, formulated as conjectures if possible.
On $4$-chromatic Schrijver graphs: their structure, non-$3$-colorability, and critical edges

We give an elementary proof for the non-$3$-colorability of $4$-chromatic Schrijver graphs thus providing such a proof also for $4$-chromatic Kneser graphs. To this end we use a complete description of the structure of $4$-chromatic Schrijver graphs that was already given by Braun and even earlier in an unpublished manuscript by Li. We also address connections to surface quadrangulations. In particular, we show that a spanning subgraph of $4$-chromatic Schrijver graphs quadrangulates the Klein bottle, while another spanning subgraph quadrangulates the projective plane. The latter is a special case of a result by Kaiser and Stehlík. We characterize the color-critical edges of $4$-chromatic Schrijver graphs and also present preliminary results toward the characterization of color-critical edges in Schrijver graphs of higher chromatic number. Finally, we show that (apart from two cases of small parameters) the subgraphs we present that quadrangulate the Klein bottle are edge-color-critical. The analogous result for the subgraphs quadrangulating the projective plane is an immediate consequence of earlier results by Gimbel and Thomassen and was already noted by Kaiser and Stehlík.
A note on the spectra and eigenspaces of the universal adjacency matrices of arbitrary lifts of graphs
The universal adjacency matrix $U$ of a graph $Γ$, with adjacency matrix $A$, is a linear combination of $A$, the diagonal matrix $D$ of vertex degrees, the identity matrix $I$, and the all-1 matrix $J$ with real coefficients, that is, $U=c_1 A+c_2 D+c_3 I+ c_4 J$, with $c_i\in {\mathbb R}$ and $c_1\neq 0$. Thus, as particular cases, $U$ may be the adjacency matrix, the Laplacian, the signless Laplacian, and the Seidel matrix. In this note, we show that basically the same method introduced before by the authors can be applied for determining the spectra and bases of all the corresponding eigenspaces of arbitrary lifts of graphs (regular or not).
Cycles in Color-Critical Graphs

Tuza [1992] proved that a graph with no cycles of length congruent to $1$ modulo $k$ is $k$-colorable. We prove that if a graph $G$ has an edge $e$ such that $G-e$ is $k$-colorable and $G$ is not, then for $2\leq r\leq k$, the edge $e$ lies in at least $\prod_{i=1}^{r-1}(k-i)$ cycles of length $1\mod r$ in $G$, and $G-e$ contains at least $\frac{1}{2}\prod_{i=1}^{r-1}(k-i)$ cycles of length $0 \mod r$.
A $(k,d)$-coloring of $G$ is a homomorphism from $G$ to the graph $K_{k:d}$ with vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_{k}$ defined by making $i$ and $j$ adjacent if $d\leq j-i \leq k-d$. When $k$ and $d$ are relatively prime, define $s$ by $sd\equiv 1\mod k$. A result of Zhu [2002] implies that $G$ is $(k,d)$-colorable when $G$ has no cycle $C$ with length congruent to $is$ modulo $k$ for any $i\in \{1,\ldots,2d-1\}$. In fact, only $d$ classes need be excluded: we prove that if $G-e$ is $(k,d)$-colorable and $G$ is not, then $e$ lies in at least one cycle with length congruent to $is\mod k$ for some $i$ in $\{1,\ldots,d\}$. Furthermore, if this does not occur with $i\in\{1,\ldots,d-1\}$, then $e$ lies in at least two cycles with length $1\mod k$ and $G-e$ contains a cycle of length $0 \mod k$.
Locally common graphs
Goodman proved that the sum of the number of triangles in a graph on $n$ nodes and its complement is at least $n^3/24$; in other words, this sum is minimized, asymptotically, by a random graph with edge density $1/2$. Erdős conjectured that a similar inequality will hold for $K_4$ in place of $K_3$, but this was disproved by Thomason. But an analogous statement does hold for some other graphs, which are called {\it common graphs}. A characterization of common graphs seems, however, out of reach.
Franek and Rödl proved that $K_4$ is common in a weaker, local sense. Using the language of graph limits, we study two versions of locally common graphs. We sharpen a result of Jagger, Štovíček and Thomason by showing that no graph containing $K_4$ can be locally common, but prove that all such graphs are weakly locally common. We also show that not all connected graphs are weakly locally common.

In this paper, we study energies associated with hypergraphs. More precisely, we obtain results for the incidence and the singless Laplacian energies of uniform hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain bounds for the incidence energy as functions of well known parameters, such as maximum degree, Zagreb index and spectral radius. We also relate the incidence and signless Laplacian energies of a hypergraph with the adjacency energies of its subdivision graph and line multigraph, respectively. In addition, we compute the signless Laplacian energy for the class of the power hypergraphs.
Tomescu's graph coloring conjecture for $\ell$-connected graphs

Let $P_G(k)$ be the number of proper $k$-colorings of a finite simple graph $G$. Tomescu's conjecture, which was recently solved by Fox, He, and Manners, states that $P_G(k) \le k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ for all connected graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices with chromatic number $k\geq 4$. In this paper, we study the same problem with the additional constraint that $G$ is $\ell$-connected. For $2$-connected graphs $G$, we prove a tight bound \[ P_G(k) \le (k-1)!((k-1)^{n-k+1} + (-1)^{n-k}), \] and show that equality is only achieved if $G$ is a $k$-clique with an ear attached. For $\ell \ge 3$, we prove an asymptotically tight upper bound \[ P_G(k) \le k!(k-1)^{n-\ell - k + 1} + O((k-2)^n), \] and provide a matching lower bound construction. For the ranges $k \geq \ell$ or $\ell \geq (k-2)(k-1)+1$ we further find the unique graph maximizing $P_G(k)$. We also consider generalizing $\ell$-connected graphs to connected graphs with minimum degree $δ$.
Independent Chains in Acyclic Posets
We consider the problem of determining the maximum order of an induced vertex-disjoint union of cliques in a graph. More specifically, given some family of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ of equal order, we are interested in the parameter $a(\mathcal{G}) = \min_{G \in \mathcal{G}} \max \{ |U| : U \subseteq V, G[U] \text{ is a vertex-disjoint union of cliques} \}$. We determine the value of this parameter precisely when $\mathcal{G}$ is the family of comparability graphs of $n$-element posets with acyclic cover graph. In particular, we show that $a(\mathcal{G}) = (n+o(n))/\log_2 (n)$ in this class.
Laurent polynomials of planar graphs
By using Laurent graph polynomials instead of the usual ones, i.e. by allowing negative powers of the variables, we simplify an existing method of determining the Alon-Tarsi numbers of planar graphs.
Bounded VC-dimension implies the Schur-Erdos conjecture

In 1916, Schur introduced the Ramsey number $r(3;m)$, which is the minimum integer $n$ such that for any $m$-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$, there is a monochromatic copy of $K_3$. He showed that $r(3;m) \leq O(m!)$, and a simple construction demonstrates that $r(3;m) \geq 2^{Ω(m)}$. An old conjecture of Erd\H os states that $r(3;m) = 2^{Θ(m)}$. In this note, we prove the conjecture for $m$-colorings with bounded VC-dimension, that is, for $m$-colorings with the property that the set system $\mathcal{F}$ induced by the neighborhoods of the vertices with respect to each color class has bounded VC-dimension.

Given an infinite family ${\mathcal G}$ of graphs and a monotone property ${\mathcal P}$, an (upper) threshold for ${\mathcal G}$ and ${\mathcal P}$ is a "fastest growing" function $p: \mathbb{N} \to [0,1]$ such that $\lim_{n \to \infty} \Pr(G_n(p(n)) \in {\mathcal P})= 1$ for any sequence $(G_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ over ${\mathcal G}$ with $\lim_{n \to \infty}\lvert V(G_n) \rvert = \infty$, where $G_n(p(n))$ is the random subgraph of $G_n$ such that each edge remains independently with probability $p(n)$.
In this paper we study the upper threshold for the family of $H$-minor free graphs and for the graph property of being $(r-1)$-degenerate, which is one fundamental graph property with many applications. Even a constant factor approximation for the upper threshold for all pairs $(r,H)$ is expected to be very difficult by its close connection to a major open question in extremal graph theory. We determine asymptotically the thresholds (up to a constant factor) for being $(r-1)$-degenerate for a large class of pairs $(r,H)$, including all graphs $H$ of minimum degree at least $r$ and all graphs $H$ with no vertex-cover of size at most $r$, and provide lower bounds for the rest of the pairs of $(r,H)$. The results generalize to arbitrary proper minor-closed families and the properties of being $r$-colorable, being $r$-choosable, or containing an $r$-regular subgraph, respectively.
Signless Laplacian spectral characterization of some graphs
In this paper, we investigate (signless) Laplacian spectral characterization of graphs with star components. Also, we prove that the join graph ${\small K_{n-α}-e\vee αK_{1}}$ is $DQS$ for $n-α>3$ and $α\neq3$, and for $α=3$, we show that its only $Q$-cospectral mate is $\bar{K_{1,3}\cup K_{2}\cup (n-6)K_{1}}$.
On star edge colorings of bipartite and subcubic graphs

A star edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring with no $2$-colored path or cycle of length four. The star chromatic index $χ'_{st}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number $t$ for which $G$ has a star edge coloring with $t$ colors. We prove upper bounds for the star chromatic index of complete bipartite graphs; in particular we obtain tight upper bounds for the case when one part has size at most $3$. We also consider bipartite graphs $G$ where all vertices in one part have maximum degree $2$ and all vertices in the other part has maximum degree $b$. Let $k$ be an integer ($k\geq 1$), we prove that if $b=2k+1$ then $χ'_{st}(G) \leq 3k+2$; and if $b=2k$, then $χ'_{st}(G) \leq 3k$; both upper bounds are sharp.
Finally, we consider the well-known conjecture that subcubic graphs have star chromatic index at most $6$; in particular we settle this conjecture for cubic Halin graphs.
