The generic Groebner walk
Published in J. Symb. Comp. 42 (2007), 298-312. • View PublicationBIB
The Groebner walk is an algorithm for conversion between Groebner bases for different term orders. It is based on the polyhedral geometry of the Groebner fan and involves tracking a line between cones representing the initial and target term order. An important parameter is explicit numerical perturbation of this line. This usually involves both time and space demanding arithmetic of integers much larger than the input numbers. In this paper we show how the explicit line may be replaced by a formal line using Robbiano's characterization of group orders on Q^n. This gives rise to the generic Groebner walk involving only Groebner basis conversion over facets and computations with marked polynomials. The proposed technique is closely related to the lexicographic (symbolic) perturbation method used in optimization and computational geometry. We report on computations with toric ideals, where a version of our algorithm in certain cases computes test sets for hard integer knapsack problems significantly faster than the Buchberger algorithm.

Groebner basis degree bounds on $\Tor^{k[Λ]}_\bullet(k,k)_\bullet$ and discrete Morse theory for posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this paper is twofold. 1. We give combinatorial bounds on the ranks of the groups $\Tor^{R}_\bullet(k,k)_\bullet$ in the case where $R = k[Λ]$ is an affine semi-group ring, and in the process provide combinatorial proofs for bounds by Eisenbud, Reeves and Totaro on which Tor groups vanish. In addition, we show that if the bounds hold for a field $k$ then they hold for $\field[Λ]$ and any field $\field$. Moreover, we provide a combinatorial construction for a free resolution of $\field$ over $\field[Λ]$ which achieves these bounds. 2. We extend the lexicographic discrete Morse function construction of Babson and Hersh for the determination of the homotopy type and homology of order complexes of posets to a larger class of facet orderings that includes orders induced by monomial term orders. Since it is known that the order complexes of finite intervals in the poset of monomials in $k[Λ]$ ordered by divisibility in $k[Λ]$ govern the $\Tor$-groups, the newly developed tools are applicable and serve as the main ingredients for the proof of the bounds and the construction of the resolution.

Defining equations of subspace arrangements embedded in reflection arrangements
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 2004, no. 15, 713-727 • View PublicationBIB
We give explicit generators for ideals of two classes of subspace arrangements embedded in certain reflection arrangements, generalizing results of Li-Li and Kleitman-Lovasz. We also give minimal generators for the ideals of arrangements that arise in a natural way from the p-skeleton of an n-dimensional cube and discuss conditions under which the generators that we give form a Groebner basis.

Chow rings of toric varieties defined by atomic lattices
Published in Invent. Math. 155 (2004) 515-536. • View PublicationBIB
We study a graded algebra D=D(L,G) defined by a finite lattice L and a subset G in L, a so-called building set. This algebra is a generalization of the cohomology algebras of hyperplane arrangement compactifications found in work of De Concini and Procesi. Our main result is a representation of D, for an arbitrary atomic lattice L, as the Chow ring of a smooth toric variety that we construct from L and G. We describe this variety both by its fan and geometrically by a series of blowups and orbit removal. Also we find a Groebner basis of the relation ideal of D and a monomial basis of D over Z.
From Monomials to Words to graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite alphabet X and an ordering on the letters, the map σsends each monomial on X to the word that is the ordered product of the letter powers in the monomial. Motivated by a question on Groebner bases, we characterize ideals I in the free commutative monoid (in terms of a generating set) such that the ideal <σ(I)> generated by σ(I) in the free monoid is finitely generated. Whether there exists an ordering such that <σ(I)> is finitely generated turns out to be NP-complete. The latter problem is closely related to the recognition problem for comparability graphs.

Representation of matroids
In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient criterion for representability of a matroid over an algebraic closed field. This leads to an algorithm, based on an extension of Groebner Bases, in order to decide if a given matroid is representable over such a field.

Groebner and diagonal bases in Orlik-Solomon type algebras
The Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid M is the quotient of the exterior algebra on the points by the ideal I(M) generated by the boundaries of the circuits of the matroid. There is an isomorphism between the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a complex matroid and the cohomology of the complement of a complex arrangement of hyperplanes. In this article a generalization of the Orlik-Solomon algebras, called X-algebras, are considered. These new algebras include, apart from the Orlik-Solomon algebras, the Orlik-Solomon-Terao algebra of a set of vectors and the Cordovil algebra of an oriented matroid. To encode an important property of the "no broken circuit bases" of the Orlik-Solomon-Terao algebras, Andras Szenes has introduced a particular type of bases, the so called "diagonal bases". This notion extends naturally to X-algebras. We give a survey of the results obtained by the authors concerning the construction of Groebner bases of I(M) and diagonal bases of Orlik-Solomon type algebras and we present the combinatorial analogue of an ``iterative residue formula'' introduced by Szenes.

Supernormal Vector Configurations
A configuration of lattice vectors is supernormal if it contains a Hilbert basis for every cone spanned by a subset. We study such configurations from various perspectives, including triangulations, integer programming and Groebner bases. Our main result is a bijection between virtual chambers of the configuration and virtual initial ideals of the associated binomial ideal.

KRS and determinantal ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
The first sections contain a survey of the application of the Knuth-Robinson-Schensted corerspondence to the computation of Groebner bases of determinantal ideals. We also set up a conceptual framework for this application in terms of so-called "KRS invariants". Then we show that the initial ideal of a determinantal ideal "defined by shape" is given by its KRS image. We furthermore characterize those among these ideals that even have a Groebner basis of products of minors, and show that they can be characterized in terms of Greene's KRS invariants. Furthermore it is shown that for the ideal generated by all t-minors the formation of initial ideal and symbolic power commutes. The last section contains a discussion of potential KRS invariants related to so-called 1-cogenerated ideals.

Grobner Basis Techniques for Computing Actions of K-Categories
This paper involves categories and computer science. The paper is motivated by a question which arises from two pieces of research. Firstly, the work of Brown and Heyworth which extends rewriting techniques to enable the computation of left Kan extensions over the category of sets. It is well known that left Kan extensions can be defined over categories other than Sets. Secondly, the `folklore' that rewriting theory is a special case of noncommutative Groebner basis theory. It is therefore natural to ask whether Groebner bases can provide a method for computing Kan extensions beyond the special case of rewriting. To answer this question completely, fully exploiting the computational power of Groebner basis techniques relating to Kan extensions is the ultimate aim. This paper provides a first step by showing how standard noncommutative Groebner basis procedures can be used to calculate left Kan extensions of K-category actions. In the final section of the paper a number of interesting problems arising from the work are identified.

Groebner Basis Procedures for Testing Petri Nets
This paper contains introductory material on Petri nets and Groebner basis theory and makes some observations on the relation between the two areas. The aim of the paper is to show how Groebner basis procedures can be applied to the problem of reachability in Petri nets, and to give details of an application to testing models of navigational systems.

Rewriting as a Special Case of Noncommutative Groebner Basis Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Rewriting for semigroups is a special case of Groebner basis theory for noncommutative polynomial algebras. The fact is a kind of folklore but is not fully recognised. The aim of this paper is to elucidate this relationship, showing that the noncommutative Buchberger algorithm corresponds step-by-step to the Knuth-Bendix completion procedure.
