On the spectral radius of graphs: nonregular distance-hereditary graphs with given edge-connectivity, graphs with tree-width $k$ and block graphs with prescribed independence number $α$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The edge-connectivity of a graph is the minimum number of edges whose deletion disconnects the graph. Let $Δ(G)$ the maximum degree of a graph $G$ and let $ρ(G)$ be the spectral radius of $G$. In this article we present a lower bound for $Δ(G)-ρ(G)$ in terms of the edge connectivity of $G$, where $G$ is a nonregular distance-hereditary graph. We also prove that $ρ(G)$ reaches the maximum at a unique graph in $\mathcal G$, when $\vert V(G)\vert = n$, and $\mathcal G$ either is in the class of graphs with bounded tree-width or is in the class of block graphs with prescribed independence number.

Independence and Connectivity of Connected Domination Critical Graphs
A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ_{c}$-critical if the connected domination number $γ_{c}(G) = k$ and $γ_{c}(G + uv) < k$ for every $uv \in E(\overline{G})$. Let $δ, κ$ and $α$ be respectively the minimum degree, the connectivity and the independence number. In this paper, we show that a $3$-$γ_{c}$-critical graph $G$ satisfies $α\leq κ+ 2$. Moreover, if $κ\geq 3$, then $α= κ+ p$ if and only if $α= δ+ p$ for all $p \in \{1, 2\}$. We show that the condition $κ+ 1 \leq α\leq κ+ 2$ is best possible to prove that $κ= δ$. By these result, we conclude our paper with an open problem on Hamiltonian connected of $3$-$γ_{c}$-critical graphs.

Cubic graphs with equal independence number and matching number

Caro, Davila, and Pepper (arXiv:1909.09093) recently proved $δ(G) α(G)\leq Δ(G) μ(G)$ for every graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ(G)$, maximum degree $Δ(G)$, independence number $α(G)$, and matching number $μ(G)$. Answering some problems they posed, we characterize the extremal graphs for $δ(G)<Δ(G)$ as well as for $δ(G)=Δ(G)=3$.

New lower bounds for partial $k$-parallelisms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Due to the applications in network coding, subspace codes and designs have received many attentions. Suppose that $k\mid n$ and $V(n,q)$ is an $n$-dimensional space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. A $k$-spread is a $\frac{q^n-1}{q^k-1}$-set of $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V(n,q)$ such that each nonzero vector is covered exactly once. A partial $k$-parallelism in $V(n,q)$ is a set of pairwise disjoint $k$-spreads. As the number of $k$-dimensional subspaces in $V(n,q)$ is ${n \brack k}_{q}$, there are at most ${n-1 \brack k-1}_{q}$ spreads in a partial $k$-parallelism. By studying the independence numbers of Cayley graphs associated to a special type of partial $k$-parallelisms in $V(n,q)$, we obtain new lower bounds for partial $k$-parallelisms. In particular, we show that there exist at least $\frac{q^{k}-1}{q^{n}-1}{n-1 \brack k-1}_q$ pairwise disjoint $k$-spreads in $V(n,q)$.

Positivity of chromatic symmetric functions associated with Hessenberg functions of bounce number 3
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a proof of Stanley-Stembridge conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions for the class of all unit interval graphs with independence number 3. That is, we show that the chromatic symmetric function of the incomparability graph of a unit interval order in which the length of a chain is at most 3 is positively expanded as a linear sum of elementary symmetric functions.

Spectral upper bound on the quantum k-independence number of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
A well known upper bound for the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$, due to Cvetković, is that \begin{equation*} α(G) \le n^0 + \min\{n^+ , n^-\} \end{equation*} where $(n^+, n^0, n^-)$ is the inertia of $G$. We prove that this bound is also an upper bound for the quantum independence number $α_q$(G), where $α_q(G) \ge α(G)$ and for some graphs $α_q(G) \gg α(G)$. We identify numerous graphs for which $α(G) = α_q(G)$, thus increasing the number of graphs for which $α_q$ is known. We also demonstrate that there are graphs for which the above bound is not exact with any Hermitian weight matrix, for $α(G)$ and $α_q(G)$. Finally, we show this result in the more general context of spectral bounds for the quantum $k$-independence number, where the $k$-independence number is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$.

On the connectivity and independence number of power graphs of groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a group. The power graph of $G$ is a graph with vertex set $G$ in which two distinct elements $x,y$ are adjacent if one of them is a power of the other. We characterize all groups whose power graphs have finite independence number, show that they have clique cover number equal to their independence number, and calculate this number. The proper power graph is the induced subgraph of the power graph on the set $G-\{1\}$. A group whose proper power graph is connected must be either a torsion group or a torsion-free group; we give characterizations of some groups whose proper power graphs are connected.

Graphs in which the Maxine heuristic produces a maximum independent set
The residue of a graph is the number of zeros left after iteratively applying the Havel-Hakimi algorithm to its degree sequence. Favaron, Mahéo, and Saclé showed that the residue is a lower bound on the independence number. The Maxine heuristic reduces a graph to an independent set of size $M$. It has been shown that given a graph $G$, $M$ is bounded between the independence number and the residue of a graph for any application of the Maxine heuristic. We improve upon a forbidden subgraph classification of graphs such that $M$ is equal to the independence number given by Barrus and Molnar in 2015.
A note on the independence number, domination number and related parameters of random binary search trees and random recursive trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We identify the mean growth of the independence number of random binary search trees and random recursive trees and show normal fluctuations around their means. Similarly we also show normal limit laws for the domination number and variations of it for these two cases of random tree models. Our results are an application of a recent general theorem of Holmgren and Janson on fringe trees in these two random tree models.
Chromatic Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1995 Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$, whose $e$-positivity and Schur-positivity has been of large interest. In this paper we study the relative $e$-positivity and Schur-positivity between connected graphs on $n$ vertices. We define and investigate two families of posets on distinct chromatic symmetric functions. The relations depend on the $e$-positivity or Schur-positivity of a weighed subtraction between $X_G$ and $X_H$. We find a biconditional condition between $e$-positivity or Schur-positivity and the relation to the complete graph. This gives a new paradigm for $e$-positivity and for Schur-positivity. We show many other interesting properties of these posets including that trees form an independent set and are maximal elements. Additionally, we find that stars are independent elements, the independence number increases as we increase in the poset and that the family of lollipop graphs form a chain.

A note on the packing chromatic number of lexicographic products
The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $k$-vertex coloring of $G$ in which any two vertices receiving color $i$ are at distance at least $i+1$. In this short note we present upper and lower bound for the packing chromatic number of the lexicographic product $G\circ H$ of graphs $G$ and $H$. Both bounds coincide in many cases. In particular this happens if $|V(H)|-α(H)\geq {\rm diam}(G)-1$, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$.

Antimagic orientations of graphs with given independence number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a digraph $D$ with $m$ arcs and a bijection $τ: A(D)\rightarrow \{1, 2, \ldots, m\}$, we say $(D, τ)$ is an antimagic orientation of a graph $G$ if $D$ is an orientation of $G$ and no two vertices in $D$ have the same vertex-sum under $τ$, where the vertex-sum of a vertex $u$ in $D$ under $τ$ is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz in 2010 initiated the study of antimagic orientations of graphs, and conjectured that every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation. This conjecture seems hard, and few related results are known. However, it has been verified to be true for regular graphs, biregular bipartite graphs, and graphs with large maximum degree. In this paper, we establish more evidence for the aforementioned conjecture by studying antimagic orientations of graphs $G$ with independence number at least $|V(G)|/2$ or at most four. We obtain several results. The method we develop in this paper may shed some light on attacking the aforementioned conjecture.

Bounds for the rank of a complex unit gain graph in terms of the independence number
Published • View PublicationBIB
A complex unit gain graph (or $\mathbb{T}$-gain graph) is a triple $Φ=(G, \mathbb{T}, \varphi)$ ($(G, \varphi)$ for short) consisting of a graph $G$ as the underlying graph of $(G, \varphi)$, $\mathbb{T}= \{ z \in C:|z|=1 \} $ is a subgroup of the multiplicative group of all nonzero complex numbers $\mathbb{C}^{\times}$ and a gain function $\varphi: \overrightarrow{E} \rightarrow \mathbb{T}$ such that $\varphi(e_{ij})=\varphi(e_{ji})^{-1}=\overline{\varphi(e_{ji})}$. In this paper, we investigate the relation among the rank, the independence number and the cyclomatic number of a complex unit gain graph $(G, \varphi)$ with order $n$, and prove that $2n-2c(G) \leq r(G, \varphi)+2α(G) \leq 2n$. Where $r(G, \varphi)$, $α(G)$ and $c(G)$ are the rank of the Hermitian adjacency matrix $A(G, \varphi)$, the independence number and the cyclomatic number of $G$, respectively. Furthermore, the properties of the complex unit gain graph that reaching the lower bound are characterized.

Independent sets in hypergraphs with a forbidden link
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a probabilistic construction of a $3$-uniform hypergraph on $N$ vertices with independence number $O(\log N / \log \log N)$ in which there are at most two edges among any four vertices. This bound is tight and solves a longstanding open problem of Erdős and Hajnal in Ramsey theory. We further extend this result to prove tight bounds on various other hypergraph Ramsey numbers.

Bounds on Ramsey Games via Alterations
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 104 (2023), 470-484 • View PublicationBIB
We present a refinement of the classical alteration method for constructing $H$-free graphs: for suitable edge-probabilities $p$, we show that removing all edges in $H$-copies of the binomial random graph $G_{n,p}$ does not significantly change the independence number. This differs from earlier alteration approaches of Erdős and Krivelevich, who obtained similar guarantees by removing one edge from each $H$-copy (instead of all of them). We demonstrate the usefulness of our refined alternation method via two applications to online graph Ramsey games, where it enables easier analysis.

Independence number and connectivity for fractional (a,b,k)-critical covered graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is a fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graph if $G-U$ is a fractional $[a,b]$-covered graph for every $U\subseteq V(G)$ with $|U|=k$, which is first defined by Zhou, Xu and Sun (S. Zhou, Y. Xu, Z. Sun, Degree conditions for fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graphs, Information Processing Letters, DOI: 10.1016/j.ipl.2019.105838). Furthermore, they derived a degree condition for a graph to be a fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graph. In this paper, we gain an independence number and connectivity condition for a graph to be a fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graph and verify that $G$ is a fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered graph if $$ κ(G)\geq\max\Big\{\frac{2b(a+1)(b+1)+4bk+5}{4b},\frac{(a+1)^{2}α(G)+4bk+5}{4b}\Big\}. $$

On the Hilton-Spencer intersection theorems for unions of cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is said to be intersecting if every two sets in $\mathcal{A}$ intersect. An intersecting family is said to be \emph{trivial} it its sets have a common element. A graph $G$ is said to be $r$-EKR if at least one of the largest intersecting families of independent $r$-element sets of $G$ is trivial. Let $α(G)$ and $ω(G)$ denote the independence number and the clique number of $G$, respectively. Hilton and Spencer recently showed that if $G$ is the vertex-disjoint union of a cycle ${_*C}$ raised to the power $k^*$ and $s$ cycles ${_1C}, \dots, {_sC}$ raised to the powers $k_1, \dots, k_s$, respectively, $1 \leq r \leq α(G)$, and $$\min\big(ω(_1C^{k_1}), \dots, ω(_sC^{k_s})\big) \geq 2k^* + 1,$$ then $G$ is $r$-EKR. They had shown that the same holds if ${_*C}$ is replaced by a path and the condition on the clique numbers is relaxed to $$\min\big(ω(_1C^{k_1}), \dots, ω(_sC^{k_s})\big) \geq k^* + 1.$$ We use the classical Shadow Intersection Theorem of Katona to obtain a short proof of each result for the case where the inequality for the minimum clique number is strict.

Proof of the Caccetta-Haggkvist conjecture for digraphs with small independence number
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 343, Issue 12, 2020, 112125 • View PublicationBIB
For a digraph $G$ and $v \in V(G)$, let $δ^+(v)$ be the number of out-neighbors of $v$ in $G$. The Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture states that for all $k \ge 1$, if $G$ is a digraph with $n = |V(G)|$ such that $δ^+(v) \ge n/k$ for all $v \in V(G)$, then G contains a directed cycle of length at most $k$. In [2], N. Lichiardopol proved that this conjecture is true for digraphs with independence number equal to two. In this paper, we generalize that result, proving that the conjecture is true for digraphs with independence number at most $(k+1)/2$.

Independence number in triangle-free graphs avoiding a minor
The celebrated Hadwiger's conjecture states that if a graph contains no $K_{t+1}$ minor then it is $t$-colourable. If true, it would in particular imply that every $n$-vertex $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph has an independent set of size at least $n/t$. In 1982, Duchet and Meyniel proved that this bound holds within a factor $2$. Their bound has been improved; most notably in an absolute factor by Fox, which was later improved by Balogh and Kostochka. Here we consider the same question for triangle-free graphs. By the results of Shearer and Kostochka and Thomason, it follows that any triangle-free graph with no $K_t$ minor has an independent set of size $Ω(\tfrac{\sqrt{\log{t}}}{t}n)$. We show that a much larger independent set exists; for all sufficiently large $t$ every triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with no $K_t$-minor has an independent set of size $ \tfrac{n}{t^{1-\varepsilon}}$. This answers a question of Sergey Norin.
