A linear complementarity based characterization of the weighted independence number and the independent domination number in graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, Volume 244, 31 July 2018, Pages 155-169 • View PublicationBIB
The linear complementarity problem is a continuous optimization problem that generalizes convex quadratic programming, Nash equilibria of bimatrix games and several such problems. This paper presents a continuous optimization formulation for the weighted independence number of a graph by characterizing it as the maximum weighted $\ell_1$ norm over the solution set of a linear complementarity problem (LCP). The minimum $\ell_1$ norm of solutions of this LCP is a lower bound on the independent domination number of the graph. Unlike the case of the maximum $\ell_1$ norm, this lower bound is in general weak, but we show it to be tight if the graph is a forest. Using methods from the theory of LCPs, we obtain a few graph theoretic results. In particular, we provide a stronger variant of the Lovász theta of a graph. We then provide sufficient conditions for a graph to be well-covered, i.e., for all maximal independent sets to also be maximum. This condition is also shown to be necessary for well-coveredness if the graph is a forest. Finally, the reduction of the maximum independent set problem to a linear program with (linear) complementarity constraints (LPCC) shows that LPCCs are hard to approximate.
On the structure of the power graph and the enhanced power graph of a group
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 24(3) (2017), P3.16 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a group. The \emph{power graph} of $G$ is a graph with the vertex set $G$, having an edge between two elements whenever one is a power of the other. We characterize nilpotent groups whose power graphs have finite independence number. For a bounded exponent group, we prove its power graph is a perfect graph and we determine its clique/chromatic number. Furthermore, it is proved that for every group $G$, the clique number of the power graph of $G$ is at most countably infinite. We also measure how close the power graph is to the \emph{commuting graph} by introducing a new graph which lies in between. We call this new graph as the \emph{enhanced power graph}. For an arbitrary pair of these three graphs we characterize finite groups for which this pair of graphs are equal.

On the normalized Shannon capacity of a union
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 25 (2016) 766-767 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G_1 \times G_2$ denote the strong product of graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, i.e. the graph on $V(G_1) \times V(G_2)$ in which $(u_1,u_2)$ and $(v_1,v_2)$ are adjacent if for each $i=1,2$ we have $u_i=v_i$ or $u_iv_i \in E(G_i)$. The Shannon capacity of $G$ is $c(G) = \lim_{n\to \infty} α(G^n)^{1/n}$, where $G^n$ denotes the $n$-fold strong power of $G$, and $α(H)$ denotes the independence number of a graph $H$. The normalized Shannon capacity of $G$ is $C(G) = \frac {\log c(G)}{\log |V(G)|}$. Alon asked whether for every $ε> 0$ there are graphs $G$ and $G'$ satisfying $C(G), C(G') < ε$ but with $C(G + G') > 1 - ε$. We show that the answer is no.

The independence number of non-uniform uncrowded hypergraphs and an anti-Ramsey type result
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the following: Fix an integer $k\geq 2$, and let $T$ be a real number with $T\geq 1.5$. Let $\cH=(V,\cE_2\cup \cE_3\cup\dots\cup\cE_k)$ be a non-uniform hypergraph with the vertex set $V$ and the set $\cE_i$ of edges of size $i=2,\ldots , k$. Suppose that $\cH$ has no $2$-cycles (regardless of sizes of edges), and neither contains $3$-cycles nor $4$-cycles consisting of $2$-element edges. If the average degrees $t_i^{i-1} := i |\cE_i|/ |V|$ satisfy that $t_i^{i-1} \leq T^{i-1} (\ln T)^{\frac{k-i}{k-1}}$ for $i= 2, \dots , k$, then there exists a constant $C_k > 0$, depending only on $k$, such that $α(\cH)\geq C_k \frac{|V|}{T} (\ln T)^{\frac{1}{k-1}}$, where $α(\cH)$ denotes the independence number of $\cH$. This extends results of Ajtai, Komlós, Pintz, Spencer and Szemerédi and Duke, Rödl and the second author for uniform hypergraphs. As an application, we consider an anti-Ramsey type problem on non-uniform hypergraphs. Let $\cH=\cH(n;2,\ldots,\ell)$ be the hypergraph on the $n$-vertex set $V$ in which, for $s=2,\ldots,\ell$, each $s$-subset of $V$ is a hyperedge of $\cH$. Let $Δ$ be an edge-coloring of $\cH$ satisfying the following: (a) two hyperedges sharing a vertex have different colors; (b) two hyperedges with distinct size have different colors; (c) a color used for a hyperedge of size $s$ appears at most $u_s$ times. For such a coloring $Δ$, let $f_Δ(n;u_2,\ldots,u_{\ell})$ be the maximum size of a subset $U$ of $V$ such that each hyperedge of $\cH[U]$ has a distinct color, and let $f(n;u_2,\ldots,u_{\ell}):=\min_Δ f_Δ(n;u_2,\ldots,u_{\ell}).$ We determine $f(n;u_2,\ldots,u_{\ell})$ up to a multiplicative logarithm factor.

Properties of the Dot Product Graph of a Commutative Ring
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $n\geq1$ be an integer. Let $R^{n}=R\times\cdots\times R~(n~times)$. The \textit{total dot product} graph, denoted by $TD(R,n)$ is a simple graph with elements of $R^{n}-\{(0,0,\ldots,0)\}$ as vertices, and two distinct vertices $\mathbf{x}$ and $\mathbf{y}$ are adjacent if and only if $\mathbf{x} \cdot \mathbf{y}=0\in R$, where $\mathbf{x} \cdot \mathbf{y}$ denotes the dot product of $\mathbf{x}$ and $\mathbf{y}$. In this paper, we find the structure of $TD(R\times S,n)$ with respect to the structure of $TD(R,n)$ and $TD(S,n)$. In addition, we find the degree of vertices of this graph. We determine when it is regular. Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field. It is shown that if $TD(\mathbb{F},n)\simeq TD(R,m)$, then $n=m$ and $R\simeq\mathbb{F}$. A number of results concerning the domination number are also presented. Furthermore, we give some results on the clique and the independence number of $TD(R,n)$. It is shown that the ring $R$ is finite if and only if its independence number is finite. Finally, we classify all planar graphs within this class.

Independent sets in polarity graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a projective plane $Σ$ and a polarity $θ$ of $Σ$, the corresponding polarity graph is the graph whose vertices are the points of $Σ$, and two distinct points $p_1$ and $p_2$ are adjacent if $p_1$ is incident to $p_2^{ θ}$ in $Σ$. A well-known example of a polarity graph is the Erdős-Rényi orthogonal polarity graph $ER_q$, which appears frequently in a variety of extremal problems. Eigenvalue methods provide an upper bound on the independence number of any polarity graph. Mubayi and Williford showed that in the case of $ER_q$, the eigenvalue method gives the correct upper bound in order of magnitude. We prove that this is also true for other families of polarity graphs. This includes a family of polarity graphs for which the polarity is neither orthogonal nor unitary. We conjecture that any polarity graph of a projective plane of order $q$ has an independent set of size $Ω(q^{3/2})$. Some related results are also obtained.

On the Corrádi-Hajnal Theorem and a question of Dirac
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1963, Corrádi and Hajnal proved that for all $k\geq1$ and $n\geq3k$, every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq2k$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles. The bound $δ(G) \geq 2k$ is sharp. Here we characterize those graphs with $δ(G)\geq2k-1$ that contain $k$ disjoint cycles. This answers the simple-graph case of Dirac's 1963 question on the characterization of $(2k-1)$-connected graphs with no $k$ disjoint cycles. Enomoto and Wang refined the Corrádi-Hajnal Theorem, proving the following Ore-type version: For all $k\geq1$ and $n\geq3k$, every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains $k$ disjoint cycles, provided that $d(x)+d(y)\geq 4k-1$ for all distinct nonadjacent vertices $x,y$. We refine this further for $k\geq3$ and $n\geq3k+1$: If $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices such that $d(x)+d(y)\geq 4k-3$ for all distinct nonadjacent vertices $x,y$, then $G$ has $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles if and only if the independence number $α(G)\leq n-2k$ and $G$ is not one of two small exceptions in the case $k=3$. We also show how the case $k=2$ follows from Lovász' characterization of multigraphs with no two disjoint cycles.

Minimal normal graph covers
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is normal if it admits a clique cover $\mathcal C$ and a stable set cover $\mathcal S$ such that each clique in $\mathcal C$ and each stable set in $\mathcal S$ have a vertex in common. The pair $(\mathcal{C,S})$ is a normal cover of the graph. We present the following extremal property of normal covers. For positive integers $c,s$, if a graph with $n$ vertices admits a normal cover with cliques of sizes at most $c$ and stable sets of sizes at most $s$, then $c+s\geq\log_2(n)$. For infinitely many $n$, we also give a construction of a graph with $n$ vertices that admits a normal cover with cliques and stable sets of sizes less than $0.87\log_2(n)$. Furthermore, we show that for all $n$, there exists a normal graph with $n$ vertices, clique number $Θ(\log_2(n))$ and independence number $Θ(\log_2(n))$. When $c$ or $s$ are very small, we can describe all normal graphs with the largest possible number of vertices that allow a normal cover with cliques of sizes at most $c$ and stable sets of sizes at most $s$. However, such extremal graphs remain elusive even for moderately small values of $c$ and $s$.
On the chromatic numbers of small-dimensional Euclidean spaces

The paper is devoted to the study of graph sequence G_n = (V_n, E_n) where V_n is the set of all vectors v in R^n with coordinates from {-1, 0, 1} such that |v| = sqrt(3), and E_n consists of all pairs of vertices with the scalar product 1. We find exactly the independence number of G_n. As a corollary we get some new lower bounds of chi(\R^n) and chi(\Q^n) for small values of n.

Spectral bounds for the $k$-independence number of a graph

In this paper, we obtain two spectral upper bounds for the $k$-independence number of a graph which is is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$. We construct graphs that attain equality for our first bound and show that our second bound compares favorably to previous bounds on the $k$-independence number.

On the decomposition of random hypergraphs

For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $f(H)$ be the minimum number of complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform subhypergraphs of $H$ whose edge sets partition the edge set of $H$. For a graph $G$, $f(G)$ is the bipartition number of $G$ which was introduced by Graham and Pollak in 1971. In 1988, Erdős conjectured that if $G \in G(n,1/2)$, then with high probability $f(G)=n-α(G)$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. This conjecture and related problems have received a lot of attention recently. In this paper, we study the value of $f(H)$ for a typical $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$. More precisely, we prove that if $(\log n)^{2.001}/n \leq p \leq 1/2$ and $H \in H^{(r)}(n,p)$, then with high probability $f(H)=(1-π(K^{(r-1)}_r)+o(1))\binom{n}{r-1}$, where $π(K^{(r-1)}_r)$ is the Turán density of $K^{(r-1)}_r$.

On the Ramsey-Turán number with small $s$-independence number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $s$ be an integer, $f=f(n)$ a function, and $H$ a graph. Define the Ramsey-Turán number $RT_s(n,H, f)$ as the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free graph $G$ of order $n$ with $α_s(G) < f$, where $α_s(G)$ is the maximum number of vertices in a $K_s$-free induced subgraph of $G$. The Ramsey-Turán number attracted a considerable amount of attention and has been mainly studied for $f$ not too much smaller than $n$. In this paper we consider $RT_s(n,K_t, n^δ)$ for fixed $δ<1$. We show that for an arbitrarily small $\varepsilon>0$ and $1/2<δ< 1$, $RT_s(n,K_{s+1}, n^δ) = Ω(n^{1+δ-\varepsilon})$ for all sufficiently large $s$. This is nearly optimal, since a trivial upper bound yields $RT_s(n,K_{s+1}, n^δ) = O(n^{1+δ})$. Furthermore, the range of $δ$ is as large as possible. We also consider more general cases and find bounds on $RT_s(n,K_{s+r},n^δ)$ for fixed $r\ge2$. Finally, we discuss a phase transition of $RT_s(n, K_{2s+1}, f)$ extending some recent result of Balogh, Hu and Simonovits.

On the stability of some Erdős--Ko--Rado type results
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider classical Kneser's graph $K(n,r)$: for two natural numbers $ r, n $ such that $r \le n / 2$, its vertices are all the subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ of size $r$, and two such vertices are adjacent if the corresponding subsets are disjoint. The Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem states that the size of the largest independent set in this graph is $\binom{n-1}{r-1}$. Now let us delete each edge of the graph $K(n,r)$ with some fixed probability $p$ independently of each other. Quite surprisingly, the independence number of such random subgraph $K_p(n,r)$ of the graph $ K(n,r) $ is, with high probability, the same as the independence number of the initial graph. This phenomenon is called the stability of the independence number. This paper concerns the independence number of random subgraphs of the graph $G(n,r,1)$, which vertices are the same as in the Kneser graph and there is an edge between two vertices if they intersect in exactly one element. We prove the stability result for constant $r$ and $p=\frac{1}{2}$. To do that, we show that any sufficiently large independent set in $G(n,r,1)$ has some predefined structure, and this is a result of independent interest.
Partitioning 2-edge-colored graphs by monochromatic paths and cycles
Published in Combinatorica 34, 5, 507-526 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
We present results on partitioning the vertices of $2$-edge-colored graphs into monochromatic paths and cycles. We prove asymptotically the two-color case of a conjecture of Sárközy: the vertex set of every $2$-edge-colored graph can be partitioned into at most $2α(G)$ monochromatic cycles, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$. Another direction, emerged recently from a conjecture of Schelp, is to consider colorings of graphs with given minimum degree. We prove that apart from $o(|V(G)|)$ vertices, the vertex set of any $2$-edge-colored graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $(1+\eps){3|V(G)|\over 4}$ can be covered by the vertices of two vertex disjoint monochromatic cycles of distinct colors. Finally, under the assumption that $\overline{G}$ does not contain a fixed bipartite graph $H$, we show that in every $2$-edge-coloring of $G$, $|V(G)|-c(H)$ vertices can be covered by two vertex disjoint paths of different colors, where $c(H)$ is a constant depending only on $H$. In particular, we prove that $c(C_4)=1$, which is best possible.

On some conjectures concerning critical independent sets of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V(G)$. A set $S\subseteq V(G)$ is independent if no two vertices from $S$ are adjacent. For $X\subseteq V(G)$, the difference of $X$ is $d(X) = |X|-|N(X)|$ and an independent set $A$ is critical if $d(A) = \max \{d(X): X\subseteq V(G) \text{ is an independent set}\}$ (possibly $A=\emptyset$). Let $\text{nucleus}(G)$ and $\text{diadem}(G)$ be the intersection and union, respectively, of all maximum size critical independent sets in $G$. In this paper, we will give two new characterizations of König-Egerváry graphs involving $\text{nucleus}(G)$ and $\text{diadem}(G)$. We also prove a related lower bound for the independence number of a graph. This work answers several conjectures posed by Jarden, Levit, and Mandrescu.

On edge-decomposition of cubic graphs into copies of the double-star with four edges
A tree containing exactly two non-pendant vertices is called a double-star. Let $k_1$ and $k_2$ be two positive integers. The double-star with degree sequence $(k_1+1, k_2+1, 1, \ldots, 1)$ is denoted by $S_{k_1, k_2}$. If $G$ is a cubic graph and has an $S$-decomposition, for a double-star $S$, then $S$ is isomorphic to $S_{1,1}$, $S_{1,2}$ or $S_{2,2}$. It is known that a cubic graph has an $S_{1,1}$-decomposition if and only if it contains a perfect matching. In this paper we study the $S_{1,2}$-decomposition of cubic graphs. First, we present some necessary conditions for the existence of an $S_{1,2}$-decomposition in cubic graphs. Then we prove that every $\{C_3, C_5, C_7\}$-free cubic graph of order $n$ with $α(G)= \frac{3n}{8}$ has an $S_{1,2}$-decomposition, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$. Finally, we obtain some results on the $S_{1,r-1}$-decomposition of $r$-regular graphs.

Lower bounds for independence and $k$-independence number of graphs using the concept of degenerate degrees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph and $v$ any vertex of $G$. We define the degenerate degree of $v$, denoted by $ζ(v)$ as $ζ(v)={\max}_{H: v\in H}~δ(H)$, where the maximum is taken over all subgraphs of $G$ containing the vertex $v$. We show that the degenerate degree sequence of any graph can be determined by an efficient algorithm. A $k$-independent set in $G$ is any set $S$ of vertices such that $Δ(G[S])\leq k$. The largest cardinality of any $k$-independent set is denoted by $α_k(G)$. For $k\in \{1, 2, 3\}$, we prove that $α_{k-1}(G)\geq {\sum}_{v\in G} \min \{1, 1/(ζ(v)+(1/k))\}$. Using the concept of cheap vertices we strengthen our bound for the independence number. The resulting lower bounds improve greatly the famous Caro-Wei bound and also the best known bounds for $α_1(G)$ and $α_2(G)$ for some families of graphs. We show that the equality in our bound for independence number happens for a large class of graphs. Our bounds are achieved by Cheap-Greedy algorithms for $α_k(G)$ which are designed by the concept of cheap sets. At the end, a bound for $α_k(G)$ is presented, where $G$ is a forest and $k$ an arbitrary non-negative integer.

Online Paintability: The Slow-Coloring Game
Published • View PublicationBIB
The slow-coloring game is played by Lister and Painter on a graph $G$. On each round, Lister marks a nonempty subset $M$ of the uncolored vertices, scoring $|M|$ points. Painter then gives a color to a subset of $M$ that is independent in $G$. The game ends when all vertices are colored. Painter and Lister want to minimize and maximize the total score, respectively. The best score that each player can guarantee is the sum-color cost of $G$, written $\mathring{\mathrm{s}}(G)$. The game is an online variant of online sum list coloring. We proe $\frac{|V(G)|}{2α(G)} + \frac{1}{2} \leq \frac{\mathring{\mathrm{s}}(G)}{|V(G)|} \leq \max\left\{ \frac{|V(H)|}{α(H)} : H \subset G\right\}$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number, and we study when equality holds in the bounds. We compute $\mathring{\mathrm{s}}(G)$ for graphs with $α(G) = 2$. Among $n$-vertex graphs, we prove that $\mathring{\mathrm{s}}$ is minimized by the star and maximized by the path. We also obtain good bounds on $\mathring{\mathrm{s}}(K_{r,s})$.

Max-cut and extendability of matchings in distance-regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a distance-regular graph of order $v$ and size $e$. In this paper, we show that the max-cut in $G$ is at most $e(1-1/g)$, where $g$ is the odd girth of $G$. This result implies that the independence number of $G$ is at most $\frac{v}{2}(1-1/g)$. We use this fact to also study the extendability of matchings in distance-regular graphs. A graph $G$ of even order $v$ is called $t$-extendable if it contains a perfect matching, $t<v/2$ and any matching of $t$ edges is contained in some perfect matching. The extendability of $G$ is the maximum $t$ such that $G$ is $t$-extendable. We generalize previous results on strongly regular graphs and show that all distance-regular graphs with diameter $D\geq 3$ are $2$-extendable. We also obtain various lower bounds for the extendability of distance-regular graphs of valency $k$ that depend on $k$, $λ$ and $μ$, where $λ$ is the number of common neighbors of any two adjacent vertices and $μ$ is the number of common neighbors of any two vertices in distance two.
