Generalizing the notion of Newton polytope, we define the Newton-Okounkov body, respectively, for semigroups of integral points, graded algebras, and linear series on varieties. We prove that any semigroup in the lattice Z^n is asymptotically approximated by the semigroup of all the points in a sublattice and lying in a convex cone. Applying this we obtain several results: we show that for a large class of graded algebras, the Hilbert functions have polynomial growth and their growth coefficients satisfy a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. We prove analogues of Fujita approximation theorem for semigroups of integral points and graded algebras, which imply a generalization of this theorem for arbitrary linear series. Applications to intersection theory include a far-reaching generalization of the Kushnirenko theorem (from Newton polytope theory) and a new version of the Hodge inequality. We also give elementary proofs of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality in convex geometry and its analogue in algebraic geometry.

In this paper we study the homology and cohomology of confguration spaces of two distinct particles on a graph. Our main tool is intersection theory for cycles in graphs. We obtain an explicit description of the cohomology algebra of the configuration space in the case of planar graphs.
Tropical rational equivalence on R^r
We introduce an improved version of rational equivalence in tropical intersection theory which can be seen as a replacement of chapter 8 of our previous article arXiv:0709.3705v2. Using this new definition, rational equivalence is compatible with push-forwards of cycles. Moreover, we prove that every tropical cycle in R^r is equivalent to a uniquely determined affine cycle, called its degree.

We apply the tropical intersection theory developed by L. Allermann and J. Rau to compute intersection products of tropical Psi-classes on the moduli space of rational tropical curves. We show that in the case of zero-dimensional (stable) intersections, the resulting numbers agree with the intersection numbers of Psi-classes on the moduli space of n-marked rational curves computed in algebraic geometry.

We establish first parts of a tropical intersection theory. Namely, we define cycles, Cartier divisors and intersection products between these two (without passing to rational equivalence) and discuss push-forward and pull-back. We do this first for fans in R^n and then for "abstract" cycles that are fans locally. With regard to applications in enumerative geometry, we finally have a look at rational equivalence and intersection products of cycles and cycle classes in R^n.

In this paper, we consider weighted counts of tropical plane curves of particular combinatorial type through a certain number of generic points. We give a criterion, derived from tropical intersection theory on the secondary fan, for a weighted count to give a number invariant of the position of the points. By computing a certain intersection multiplicity, we show how Mikhalkin's approach to computing Gromov-Witten invariants fits into our approach. This begins to address a question raised by Dickenstein, Feichtner, and Sturmfels. We also give a geometric interpretation of the numbers we produce involving Chow quotients, and provide a counterexample showing that the tropical Severi variety is not always supported on the secondary fan.
This paper is a revision of the preprint, "The Tropical Degree of Cones in the Secondary Fan."

In [5] I.P. Goulden, D.M. Jackson, and R. Vakil formulated a conjecture relating certain Hurwitz numbers (enumerating ramified coverings of the sphere) to the intersection theory on a conjectural Picard variety. We are going to use their formula to study the intersection theory on this variety (if it is ever to be constructed) by methods close to those of M. Kazarian and S. Lando in [7]. In particular, we prove a Witten-Kontsevich-type theorem relating the intersection theory and integrable hierarchies.
We also extend the results of [7] to include the Hodge integrals over the moduli spaces, involving one lambda-class.
An algebra of power series arising in the intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves and in the enumeration of ramified coverings of the sphere
A bracket is a function that assigns a number to each monomial in variables τ_0, τ_1, ... We show that any bracket satisfying the string and the dilaton relations gives rise to a power series lying in the algebra A generated by the series \sum n^{n-1} q^n/n! and \sum n^n q^n /n! .
As a consequence, various series from A appear in the intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves.
A connection between the counting of ramified coverings of the sphere and the intersection theory on moduli spaces allows us to prove that some natural generating functions enumerating the ramified coverings lie, yet again, in A. As an application, one can find the asymptotic of the number of such coverings as the number of sheets tends to infinity.
We believe that the leading terms of the asymptotics like that correspond to observables in 2-dimensional gravity.
Towards the geometry of double Hurwitz numbers

Double Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the projective line with fixed branch points, with simple branching required over all but two points 0 and infinity, and the branching over 0 and infinity specified by partitions of the degree (with m and n parts respectively). Single Hurwitz numbers have a rich structure, explored by authors in many fields. The ELSV formula relates single Hurwitz numbers to intersection theory on the moduli space of curves, and has led to many consequences.
We determine the structure of double Hurwitz numbers using geometry, algebra, and representation theory. Our motivation is geometric: we give strong evidence that double Hurwitz numbers are top intersections on a universal Picard variety. In particular, we prove a piecewise-polynomiality result analogous to that implied by the ELSV formula. In the case m=1 and n is arbitrary, we conjecture an ELSV-type formula, and show it to be true in genus 0 and 1. The corresponding Witten-type correlation function has a better structure than that for single Hurwitz numbers, and it satisfies many geometric properties, such as the string and dilaton equations, and a genus expansion ansatz analogous to that of Itzykson and Zuber. We give a symmetric function description of the double Hurwitz generating series, which leads to explicit formulae for double Hurwitz numbers with given m and n. In the case where m is fixed but not necessarily 1, we prove a topological recursion on the corresponding generating series, which leads to closed-form expressions for double Hurwitz numbers and an analogue of the Goulden-Jackson polynomiality conjecture (an early conjectural variant of the ELSV formula).

The Hurwitz space is a compactification of the space of rational functions of a given degree. We study the intersection of various strata of this space with its boundary. A study of the cohomology ring of the Hurwitz space then allows us to obtain recurrence relations for certain numbers of ramified coverings of a sphere by a sphere with prescribed ramifications. Generating functions for these numbers belong to a very particular subalgebra of the algebra of power series.
Generating functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves
Using the connection between intersection theory on the Deligne-Mumford spaces and the edge scaling of the GUE matrix model (see math.CO/9903176, math.AG/0101147), we express the n-point functions for the intersection numbers as n-dimensional error-function-type integrals and also give a derivation of Witten's KdV equations using the higher Fay identities of Adler, Shiota, and van Moerbeke.

The main goal of the paper is to present a new approach via Hurwitz numbers to Kontsevich's combinatorial/matrix model for the intersection theory of the moduli space of curves. A secondary goal is to present an exposition of the circle of ideas involved: Hurwitz numbers, Gromov-Witten theory of the projective line, matrix integrals, and the theory of random trees. Further topics will be treated in a sequel.
Random Matrices and Random Permutations
We prove the conjecture of Baik, Deift, and Johansson which says that with respect to the Plancherel measure on the set of partitions of $n$, the 1st, 2nd, and so on, rows behave, suitably scaled, like the 1st, 2nd, and so on, eigenvalues of a Gaussian random Hermitian matrix as $n$ goes to infinity. Our proof is based on an interplay between maps on surfaces and ramified coverings of the sphere. We also establish a connection of this problem with intersection theory on the moduli spaces of curves.
