Random skew plane partitions and the Pearcey process

We study random skew 3D partitions weighted by $q^{\textup{vol}}$ and, specifically, the $q\to 1$ asymptotics of local correlations near various points of the limit shape. We obtain sine-kernel asymptotics for correlations in the bulk of the disordered region, Airy kernel asymptotics near a general point of the frozen boundary, and a Pearcey kernel asymptotics near a cusp of the frozen boundary.

These are (not updated) notes from the lectures I gave at the NATO ASI ``Symmetric Functions 2001'' at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge (June 25 -- July 6, 2001). Their goal is an informal introduction to asymptotic combinatorics related to partitions.

These are (not updated) notes from the lectures I gave in St.Petersburg in July of 2001. Their goal is to give an expository account of the proof of Kontsevich's combinatorial formula for intersections on moduli spaces of curves following math.AG/0101147.
Gromov-Witten theory, Hurwitz theory, and completed cycles

We establish an explicit equivalence between the stationary sector of the Gromov-Witten theory of a target curve X and the enumeration of Hurwitz coverings of X in the basis of completed cycles. The stationary sector is formed, by definition, by the descendents of the point class. Completed cycles arise naturally in the theory of shifted symmetric functions. Using this equivalence, we give a complete description of the stationary Gromov-Witten theory of the projective line and elliptic curve. Toda equations for the relative stationary theory of the projective line are derived.

We give a concise direct proof of the orthogonality of interpolation Macdonald polynomials with respect to the Fourier pairing and briefly discuss some immediate applications of this orthogonality, such as the symmetry of the Fourier pairing and the binomial formula.
Correlation function of Schur process with application to local geometry of a random 3-dimensional Young diagram

Schur process is a time-dependent analog of the Schur measure on partitions studied in math.RT/9907127. Our first result is that the correlation functions of the Schur process are determinants with a kernel that has a nice contour integral representation in terms of the parameters of the process. This general result is then applied to a particular specialization of the Schur process, namely to random 3-dimensional Young diagrams. The local geometry of a large random 3-dimensional diagram is described in terms of a determinantal point process on a 2-dimensional lattice with the incomplete beta function kernel (which generalizes the discrete sine kernel). A brief discussion of the universality of this answer concludes the paper.
Generating functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves
Using the connection between intersection theory on the Deligne-Mumford spaces and the edge scaling of the GUE matrix model (see math.CO/9903176, math.AG/0101147), we express the n-point functions for the intersection numbers as n-dimensional error-function-type integrals and also give a derivation of Witten's KdV equations using the higher Fay identities of Adler, Shiota, and van Moerbeke.

The main goal of the paper is to present a new approach via Hurwitz numbers to Kontsevich's combinatorial/matrix model for the intersection theory of the moduli space of curves. A secondary goal is to present an exposition of the circle of ideas involved: Hurwitz numbers, Gromov-Witten theory of the projective line, matrix integrals, and the theory of random trees. Further topics will be treated in a sequel.
Combinatorial formula for Macdonald polynomials, Bethe Ansatz, and generic Macdonald polynomials

We give a direct proof of the combinatorial formula for interpolation Macdonald polynomials by introducing certain polynomials, which we call generic Macdonald polynomials, which depend on $d$ additional parameters and specialize to all Macdonald polynomials of degree $d$. The form of these generic polynomials is that of a Bethe eigenfunction and they imitate, on a more elementary level, the $R$-matrix construction of quantum immanants.

We consider ramified coverings of P^1 with arbitrary ramification type over 0 and infinity and simple ramifications elsewhere and prove that the generating function for the numbers of such coverings is a tau-function for the Toda lattice hierarchy of Ueno and Takasaki.

Why would multiplicities be log-concave ?

It is a basic property of the entropy in statistical physics that is concave as a function of energy. The analog of this in representation theory would be the concavity of the logarithm of the multiplicity of an irreducible representation as a function of its highest weight. We discuss various situations where such concavity can be established or reasonably conjectured and consider some implications of this concavity. These are rather informal notes based on a number of talks I gave on the subject, in particular, at the 1997 International Press lectures at UC Irvine.

Using techniques from integrable systems, we obtain a number of exact results for random partitions. In particular, we prove a simple formula for correlation functions of what we call the Schur measure on partitions (which is a far reaching generalization of the Plancherel measure, see math.CO/9905032) and also show that these correlations functions are tau-functions for the Toda lattice hierarchy. Also we give a new proof of the formula due to Bloch and the author, see alg-geom/9712009, for the so called n-point functions of the uniform measure on partitions and comment on the local structure of a typical partition.

We consider the asymptotics of the Plancherel measures on partitions of $n$ as $n$ goes to infinity. We prove that the local structure of a Plancherel typical partition (which we identify with a Young diagram) in the middle of the limit shape converges to a determinantal point process with the discrete sine kernel. On the edges of the limit shape, we prove that the joint distribution of suitably scaled 1st, 2nd, and so on rows of a Plancherel typical diagram converges to the corresponding distribution for eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices (given by the Airy kernel). This proves a conjecture due to Baik, Deift, and Johansson by methods different from the Riemann-Hilbert techniques used in their original papers math.CO/9810105 and math.CO/9901118 and from the combinatorial approach proposed by Okounkov in math.CO/9903176.
Our approach is based on an exact determinantal formula for the correlation functions of the poissonized Plancherel measures involving a new kernel on the 1-dimensional lattice. This kernel is expressed in terms of Bessel functions and we obtain it as a degeneration of the hypergeometric kernel from the paper math.RT/9904010 by Borodin and Olshanski. Our asymptotic analysis relies on the classical asymptotic formulas for the Bessel functions and depoissonization techniques.
Random Matrices and Random Permutations
We prove the conjecture of Baik, Deift, and Johansson which says that with respect to the Plancherel measure on the set of partitions of $n$, the 1st, 2nd, and so on, rows behave, suitably scaled, like the 1st, 2nd, and so on, eigenvalues of a Gaussian random Hermitian matrix as $n$ goes to infinity. Our proof is based on an interplay between maps on surfaces and ramified coverings of the sphere. We also establish a connection of this problem with intersection theory on the moduli spaces of curves.

We classify all irreducible admissible representations of three Olshanski pairs connected to the infinite symmetric group. In particular, our methods yield two simple proofs of the classical Thoma's description of the characters of the infinite symmetric group. Also, we discuss a certain operation called mixture of representations which provides a uniform construction of all irreducible admissible representations.
