Random Feedback Shift Registers, and the Limit Distribution for Largest Cycle Lengths
For a random binary noncoalescing feedback shift register of width $n$, with all $2^{2^{n-1}}$ possible feedback functions $f$ equally likely, the process of long cycle lengths, scaled by dividing by $N=2^n$, converges in distribution to the same Poisson-Dirichlet limit as holds for random permutations in $\mathcal{S}_N$, with all $N!$ possible permutations equally likely. Such behavior was conjectured by Golomb, Welch, and Goldstein in 1959.

Cutting resilient networks -- complete binary trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
In our previous work, we introduced the random $k$-cut number for rooted graphs. In this paper, we show that the distribution of the $k$-cut number in complete binary trees of size $n$, after rescaling, is asymptotically a periodic function of $\lg n - \lg \lg n$. Thus there are different limit distributions for different subsequences, where these limits are similar to weakly 1-stable distributions. This generalizes the result for the case $k = 1$, i.e., the traditional cutting model, by Janson.

A central limit theorem for star-generators of $S_{\infty}$, which relates to the law of a GUE matrix
Published in Journal of Theoretical Probability 34 (2021), 1248-1278 • Search Publication
It is well-known that, on a purely algebraic level, a simplified algebraic version of the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) can be proved in the framework of a noncommutative probability space, under the hypotheses that the sequence of non-commutative random variables we consider is exchangeable and obeys a certain vanishing condition of some of its joint moments. In this approach (which covers versions for both the classical CLT and the CLT of free probability), the determination of the resulting limit law has to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. In this paper we discuss an instance of the above theorem which takes place in the framework of the group algebra of the infinite symmetric group $S_{\infty}$: the exchangeable sequence that is considered consists of the star-generators of $S_{\infty}$, and the expectation functional used on the group algebra of $S_{\infty}$ depends in a natural way on a parameter $d$, which is a positive integer. We identify precisely the limit distribution $μ_d$ for this special instance of exchangeable CLT, via a connection that $μ_d$ turns out to have with the average empirical eigenvalue distribution of a random GUE matrix of size $d \times d$. Moreover, we put into evidence a multi-variate version of this result which follows from the observation that, on the level of calculations with pair-partitions, the (non-centred) star-generators are related to a (centred) exchangeable sequence of GUE matrices with independent entries

Patterns in random permutations avoiding some sets of multiple patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of permutations of length $n$ that avoid some given set of patterns of length 3. We show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after suitable scaling. In several cases, the number is asymptotically normal; this contrasts to the cases of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length 3 studied in earlier papers.

An asymptotic property of large matrices with identically distributed Boolean independent entries
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the recent work on asymptotic independence relations for random matrices with non-commutative entries, we investigate the limit distribution and independence relations for large matrices with identically distributed and Boolean independent entries. More precisely, we show that, under some moment conditions, such random matrices are asymptotically $ B $-diagonal and Boolean independent from each other. The paper also gives a combinatorial condition under which such matrices are asymptotically Boolean independent from the matrix obtained by permuting the entries (thus extending a recent result in Boolean probability). In particular, we show that random matrices considered are asymptotically Boolean independent from their partial transposes. The main results of the paper are based on combinatorial techniques.

Patterns in random permutations avoiding the pattern 321
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of 321-avoiding permutations of length $n$ and show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after scaling by $n^{m+\ell}$ where $m$ is the length of $σ$ and $\ell$ is the number of blocks in it. The limit is not normal, and can be expressed as a functional of a Brownian excursion.

Asymptotic distributions of Wishart type products of random matrices
Published in Colloquium Mathematicum, Vol. 155, No. 1 (2019), 67-106 • View PublicationBIB
We study asymptotic distributions of large dimensional random matrices of the form $BB^{*}$, where $B$ is a product of $p$ rectangular random matrices, using free probability and combinatorics of colored labeled noncrossing partitions. These matrices are taken from the set of off-diagonal blocks of the family $\mathcal{Y}$ of independent Hermitian random matrices which are asymptotically free, asymptotically free against the family of deterministic diagonal matrices, and whose norms are uniformly bounded almost surely. This class includes unitarily invariant Hermitian random matrices with limit distributions given by compactly supported probability measures $ν$ on the real line. We express the limit moments in terms of colored labeled noncrossing pair partitions, to which we assign weights depending on even free cumulants of $ν$ and on asymptotic dimensions of blocks (Gaussianization). For products of $p$ independent blocks, we show that the limit moments are linear combinations of a new family of polynomials called generalized multivariate Fuss-Narayana polynomials. In turn, the product of two blocks of the same matrix leads to an example with rescaled Raney numbers.

A countdown process, with application to the rank of random matrices over $\mathbb F_q(n)$
Motivated by the work of Fulman and Goldstein, comparing the distribution of the corank of random matrices in $\mathbb F_q[n]$ with the limit distribution as $n \to \infty$, we define a countdown process, driven by independent geometric random variables related to random integer partitions. Analysis of this process leads to sharper bounds on the total variation distance.

Domino Tilings of the Torus
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of counting and classifying domino tilings of a quadriculated torus. The counting problem for rectangles was studied by Kasteleyn and we use many of his ideas. Domino tilings of planar regions can be represented by height functions; for a torus given by a lattice L, these functions exhibit arithmetic L-quasiperiodicity. The additive constants determine the flux of the tiling, which can be interpreted as a vector in the dual lattice (2L)*. We give a characterization of the actual flux values, and of how corresponding tilings behave. We also consider domino tilings of the infinite square lattice; tilings of tori can be seen as a particular case of those. We describe the construction and usage of Kasteleyn matrices in the counting problem, and how they can be applied to count tilings with prescribed flux values. Finally, we study the limit distribution of the number of tilings with a given flux value as a uniform scaling dilates the lattice L.

The Writhe of Permutations and Random Framed Knots
Published in Random Struct. Alg. 2016. 51: 121-142 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study the writhe of a permutation, a circular variant of the well-known inversion number. This simple permutation statistics has several interpretations, which lead to some interesting properties. For a permutation sampled uniformly at random, we study the asymptotics of the writhe, and obtain a non-Gaussian limit distribution. This work is motivated by the study of random knots. A model for random framed knots is described, which refines the Petaluma model. The distribution of the framing in this model is equivalent to the writhe of random permutations.

Density dichotomy in random words
Published • View PublicationBIB
Word $W$ is said to encounter word $V$ provided there is a homomorphism $φ$ mapping letters to nonempty words so that $φ(V)$ is a substring of $W$. For example, taking $φ$ such that $φ(h)=c$ and $φ(u)=ien$, we see that "science" encounters "huh" since $cienc=φ(huh)$. The density of $V$ in $W$, $δ(V,W)$, is the proportion of substrings of $W$ that are homomorphic images of $V$. So the density of "huh" in "science" is $2/{8 \choose 2}$. A word is doubled if every letter that appears in the word appears at least twice. The dichotomy: Let $V$ be a word over any alphabet, $Σ$ a finite alphabet with at least 2 letters, and $W_n \in Σ^n$ chosen uniformly at random. Word $V$ is doubled if and only if $\mathbb{E}(δ(V,W_n)) \rightarrow 0$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. We further explore convergence for nondoubled words and concentration of the limit distribution for doubled words around its mean.

Canonical Trees, Compact Prefix-free Codes and Sums of Unit Fractions: A Probabilistic Analysis
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 29 (2015), no. 3, 1600-1653 • View PublicationBIB
For fixed $t\ge 2$, we consider the class of representations of $1$ as sum of unit fractions whose denominators are powers of $t$ or equivalently the class of canonical compact $t$-ary Huffman codes or equivalently rooted $t$-ary plane "canonical" trees. We study the probabilistic behaviour of the height (limit distribution is shown to be normal), the number of distinct summands (normal distribution), the path length (normal distribution), the width (main term of the expectation and concentration property) and the number of leaves at maximum distance from the root (discrete distribution).

The Coupon Collector's Problem Revisited: Generalizing the Double Dixie Cup Problem of Newman and Shepp
Published • View PublicationBIB
The "double Dixie cup problem" of D.J. Newman and L. Shepp (1960) is a well-known variant of the coupon collector's problem, where the object of study is the number $T_{m}(N)$ of coupons that a collector has to buy in order to complete $m$ sets of all $N$ existing different coupons. More precisely, the problem is to determine the asymptotics of the expectation (and the variance) of $T_{m}(N)$, as well as its limit distribution, as the number $N$ of different coupons becomes arbitrarily large. The classical case of the problem, namely the case of equal coupon probabilities, is here extended to the general case, where the probabilities of the selected coupons are unequal. In the beginning of the article we give a brief review of the formulas for the moments and the moment generating function of the random variable $T_{m}(N)$. Then, we develop techniques of computing the asymptotics of the first and the second moment of $T_{m}(N)$ (our techniques apply to the higher moments of $T_{m}(N)$ as well). From these asymptotic formulas we obtain the leading behavior of the variance $V[\,T_{m}(N)\,]$ as $N \to \infty$. Finally, based on the asymptotics of $E[\,T_{m}(N)\,]$ and $V[\,T_{m}(N)\,]$ we obtain the limit distribution of the random variable $T_{m}(N)$ for large classes of coupon probabilities. As it turns out, in many cases, albeit not always, $T_{m}(N)$ (appropriately normalized) converges in distribution to a Gumbel random variable. Our results on the limit distribution of $T_{m}(N)$ generalize a well-known result of P. Erdős and A. Rényi (1961) regarding the limit distribution of $T_{m}(N)$ for the case of equal coupon probabilities.

The limit is not normal, and can be expressed as a functional of a Brownian excursion. Moments can be found by recursion.

On the limiting distribution of the metric dimension for random forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
The metric dimension of a graph G is the minimum size of a subset S of vertices of G such that all other vertices are uniquely determined by their distances to the vertices in S. In this paper we investigate the metric dimension for two different models of random forests, in each case obtaining normal limit distributions for this parameter.

On statistics of permutations chosen from the Ewens distribution
We explore the asymptotic distributions of sequences of integer-valued additive functions defined on the symmetric group endowed with the Ewens probability measure as the order of the group increases. Applying the method of factorial moments, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the weak convergence of distributions to discrete laws. More attention is paid to the Poisson limit distribution. The particular case of the number-of-cycles with restricted lengths function is analyzed in more detail. The results can be applied to statistics defined on random permutation matrices.

On the limit distribution of the normality measure of random binary sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the existence of a limit distribution for the normalized normality measure $\mathcal{N}(E_N)/\sqrt{N}$ (as $N \to \infty$) for random binary sequences $E_N$, by this means confirming a conjecture of Alon, Kohayakawa, Mauduit, Moreira and R{ö}dl. The key point of the proof is to approximate the distribution of the normality measure by the exiting probabilities of a multidimensional Wiener process from a certain polytope.

A phase transition in energy-filtered RNA secondary structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the effect of energy parameters on minimum free energy (mfe) RNA secondary structures. Employing a simplified combinatorial energy model, that is only dependent on the diagram representation and that is not sequence specific, we prove the following dichotomy result. Mfe structures derived via the Turner energy parameters contain only finitely many complex irreducible substructures and just minor parameter changes produce a class of mfe-structures that contain a large number of small irreducibles. We localize the exact point where the distribution of irreducibles experiences this phase transition from a discrete limit to a central limit distribution and subsequently put our result into the context of quantifying the effect of sparsification of the folding of these respective mfe-structures. We show that the sparsification of realistic mfe-structures leads to a constant time and space reduction and that the sparsifcation of the folding of structures with modified parameters leads to a linear time and space reduction. We furthermore identify the limit distribution at the phase transition as a Rayleigh distribution.

A limit process for partial match queries in random quadtrees and $2$-d trees
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2013, Vol. 23, No. 6, 2560-2603 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of recovering items matching a partially specified pattern in multidimensional trees (quadtrees and $k$-d trees). We assume the traditional model where the data consist of independent and uniform points in the unit square. For this model, in a structure on $n$ points, it is known that the number of nodes $C_n(ξ)$ to visit in order to report the items matching a random query $ξ$, independent and uniformly distributed on $[0,1]$, satisfies $\mathbf {E}[{C_n(ξ)}]\simκn^β$, where $κ$ and $β$ are explicit constants. We develop an approach based on the analysis of the cost $C_n(s)$ of any fixed query $s\in[0,1]$, and give precise estimates for the variance and limit distribution of the cost $C_n(x)$. Our results permit us to describe a limit process for the costs $C_n(x)$ as $x$ varies in $[0,1]$; one of the consequences is that $\mathbf {E}[{\max_{x\in[0,1]}C_n(x)}]\sim γn^β$; this settles a question of Devroye [Pers. Comm., 2000].
