LGV proof of a determinantal theorem for TASEP probabilities
The Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) is a non-equilibrium particle model on a finite one-dimensional lattice with open boundaries. In our earlier paper, we obtained a determinantal formula that computes the steady state probabilities of this process by the enumeration of "Catalan alternative tableaux", which are certain fillings of Young diagrams. Here, we present a new, more illuminating bijective proof of this determinantal formula using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot Lemma.

We generalize a theorem of W. Jockusch and J. Propp on quartered Aztec diamonds by enumerating the tilings of quartered Aztec rectangles. We use subgraph replacement method to transform the dual graph of a quartered Aztec rectangle to the dual graph of a quartered lozenge hexagon, and then use Lindström-Gessel-Viennot methodology to find the number of tilings of a quartered lozenge hexagon.
Network Parameterizations for the Grassmannian

Deodhar introduced his decomposition of partial flag varieties as a tool for understanding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. The Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian is also useful in the context of soliton solutions to the KP equation, as shown by Kodama and the second author. Deodhar components S_D of the Grassmannian are in bijection with certain tableaux D called Go-diagrams, and each component is isomorphic to (K*)^a \times (K)^b for some non-negative integers a and b.
Our main result is an explicit parameterization of each Deodhar component in the Grassmannian in terms of networks. More specifically, from a Go-diagram D we construct a weighted network N_D and its weight matrix W_D, whose entries enumerate directed paths in N_D. By letting the weights in the network vary over K or K* as appropriate, one gets a parameterization of the Deodhar component S_D. One application of such a parameterization is that one may immediately determine which Plucker coordinates are vanishing and nonvanishing, by using the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot Lemma. We also give a (minimal) characterization of each Deodhar component in terms of Plucker coordinates. A main tool for us is the work of Marsh and Rietsch on Deodhar components in the flag variety.

We prove a conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey [Alternating sign matrices and descending plane partitions, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 34 (1983), 340-359] that, for any n, k, m and p, the number of nxn alternating sign matrices (ASMs) for which the 1 of the first row is in column k+1 and there are exactly m -1's and m+p inversions is equal to the number of descending plane partitions (DPPs) for which each part is at most n and there are exactly k parts equal to n, m special parts and p nonspecial parts. The proof involves expressing the associated generating functions for ASMs and DPPs with fixed n as determinants of nxn matrices, and using elementary transformations to show that these determinants are equal. The determinants themselves are obtained by standard methods: for ASMs this involves using the Izergin-Korepin formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions, together with a bijection between ASMs and configurations of this model, and for DPPs it involves using the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot theorem, together with a bijection between DPPs and certain sets of nonintersecting lattice paths.
Viewing determinants as nonintersecting lattice paths yields classical determinantal identities bijectively

In this paper, we show how general determinants may be viewed as generating functions of nonintersecting lattice paths, using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot interpretation of semistandard Young tableaux and the Jacobi-Trudi identity together with elementary observations. After some preparations, this point of view provides very simple "graphical proofs" for classical determinantal identities like the Cauchy--Binet formula, Dodgson's condensation formula, the Plücker relations and Laplace's expansion. Also, a determinantal identity generalizing Dodgson's condensation formula is presented, which might be new.

We show that recent determinant evaluations involving Catalan numbers and generalisations thereof have most convenient explanations by combining the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot theorem on non-intersecting lattice paths with a simple determinant lemma from [Manuscripta Math. 69 (1990), 173-202]. This approach leads also naturally to extensions and generalisations.
Sums of binomial determinants, non-intersecting lattice paths and positivity of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes
We give a combinatorial interpretation of a certain positivity conjecture of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, as stated by P. Aluffi and the author in a previous paper. It translates into a positivity property for a sum of p by p determinants consisting of binomial coefficients, generalizing the classical Theorem of Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot et al. which computes these determinants in terms of non-intersecting lattice paths. We prove this conjecture for p=2,3.

It is known that the duals of transversal matroids are precisely the strict gammoids. The purpose of this short note is to show how the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot lemma gives a simple proof of this result.
Nonintersecting Paths, Noncolliding Diffusion Processes and Representation Theory

The system of one-dimensional symmetric simple random walks, in which none of walkers have met others in a given time period, is called the vicious walker model. It was introduced by Michael Fisher and applications of the model to various wetting and melting phenomena were described in his Boltzmann medal lecture. In the present report, we explain interesting connections among representation theory, probability theory, and random matrix theory using this simple diffusion particle system. Each vicious walk of $N$ walkers is represented by an $N$-tuple of nonintersecting lattice paths on the spatio-temporal plane. There is established a simple bijection between nonintersecting lattice paths and semistandard Young tableaux. Based on this bijection and some knowledge of symmetric polynomials called the Schur functions, we can give a determinantal expression to the partition function of vicious walks, which is regarded as a special case of the Karlin-McGregor formula in the probability theory (or the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot formula in the enumerative combinatorics). Due to a basic property of Schur function, we can take the diffusion scaling limit of the vicious walks and define a noncolliding system of Brownian particles. This diffusion process solves the stochastic differential equations with the drift terms acting as the repulsive two-body forces proportional to the inverse of distances between particles, and thus it is identified with Dyson's Brownian motion model. In other words, the obtained noncolliding system of Brownian particles is equivalent in distribution with the eigenvalue process of a Hermitian matrix-valued process.
On FPL configurations with four sets of nested arches

The problem of counting the number of Fully Packed Loop (FPL) configurations with four sets of a,b,c,d nested arches is addressed. It is shown that it may be expressed as the problem of enumeration of tilings of a domain of the triangular lattice with a conic singularity. After reexpression in terms of non-intersecting lines, the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot theorem leads to a formula as a sum of determinants. This is made quite explicit when min(a,b,c,d)=1 or 2. We also find a compact determinant formula which generates the numbers of configurations with b=d.

We investigate certain measures induced by families of non-intersecting paths in domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, rhombus tilings of an abc-hexagon, a dimer model on a cylindrical brick lattice and a growth model. The measures obtained, e.g. the Krawtchouk and Hahn ensembles, have the same structure as the eigenvalue measures in random matrix theory like GUE, which can in fact be obtained from non-intersecting Brownian motions. The derivations of the measures are based on the Karlin-McGregor or Lindström-Gessel-Viennot method. We use the measure to show some asymptotic results for the models.
