Eisenk"olbl gave a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon on the triangular lattice with three unit triangles removed from along alternating sides. In earlier work, the first author extended this to the situation when an arbitrary set of unit triangles is removed from along alternating sides of the hexagon. In this paper we address the general case when an arbitrary set of unit triangles is removed from along the boundary of the hexagon.

We investigate the connection between lozenge tilings and domino tilings by introducing a new family of regions obtained by attaching two different Aztec rectangles. We prove a simple product formula for the generating functions of the tilings of the new regions, which involves the statistics as in the Aztec diamond theorem (Elkies, Kuperberg, Larsen, and Propp, J. Algebraic Combin. 1992). Moreover, we consider the connection between the generating function and MacMahon's $q$-enumeration of plane partitions fitting in a given box

It has been proven that the lozenge tilings of a quartered hexagon on the triangular lattice are enumerated by a simple product formula. In this paper we give a new proof for the tiling formula by using Kuo's graphical condensation. Our result generalizes a Proctor's theorem on enumeration of plane partitions contained in a "maximal staircase".

We study lozenge tilings of a domain with partially free boundary. In particular, we consider a trapezoidal domain (half hexagon), s.t. the horizontal lozenges on the long side can intersect it anywhere to protrude halfway across. We show that the positions of the horizontal lozenges near the opposite flat vertical boundary have the same joint distribution as the eigenvalues from a Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (the GUE-corners/minors process). We also prove the existence of a limit shape of the height function, which is also a vertically symmetric plane partition. Both behaviors are shown to coincide with those of the corresponding doubled fixed-boundary hexagonal domain. We also consider domains where the different sides converge to $\infty$ at different rates and recover again the GUE-corners process near the boundary.

We give a new proof of the fact that, near a turning point of the frozen boundary, the vertical tiles in a uniformly random lozenge tiling of a large sawtooth domain are distributed like the eigenvalues of a GUE random matrix. Our argument uses none of the standard tools of integrable probability. In their place, it uses a combinatorial interpretation of the Harish-Chandra/Itzykson-Zuber integral as a generating function for desymmetrized Hurwitz numbers.

We consider a triangular gap of side two in a $60^\circ$ angle on the triangular lattice whose sides are zig-zag lines. We study the interaction of the gap with the corner as the rest of the angle is completely filled with lozenges. We show that the resulting correlation is governed by the product of the distances between the gap and its five images in the sides of the angle. This provides a new aspect of the parallel between the correlation of gaps in dimer packings and electrostatics developed by the first author in previous work.

We generalize a theorem of W. Jockusch and J. Propp on quartered Aztec diamonds by enumerating the tilings of quartered Aztec rectangles. We use subgraph replacement method to transform the dual graph of a quartered Aztec rectangle to the dual graph of a quartered lozenge hexagon, and then use Lindström-Gessel-Viennot methodology to find the number of tilings of a quartered lozenge hexagon.

In this paper we present a combinatorial generalization of the fact that the number of plane partitions that fit in a $2a\times b\times b$ box is equal to the number of such plane partitions that are symmetric, times the number of such plane partitions for which the transpose is the same as the complement. We use the equivalent phrasing of this identity in terms of symmetry classes of lozenge tilings of a hexagon on the triangular lattice. Our generalization consists of allowing the hexagon have certain symmetrically placed holes along its horizontal symmetry axis. The special case when there are no holes can be viewed as a new, simpler proof of the enumeration of symmetric plane partitions.
A triangular gap of size two in a sea of dimers in a $90^\circ$ angle with mixed boundary conditions, and a heat flow conjecture for the general case
We consider a triangular gap of side two in a $90^\circ$ angle on the triangular lattice with mixed boundary conditions: a constrained, zig-zag boundary along one side, and a free lattice line boundary along the other. We study the interaction of the gap with the corner as the rest of the angle is completely filled with lozenges. We show that the resulting correlation is governed by the product of the distances between the gap and its three images in the sides of the angle. The image in the side with constrained boundary has the same orientation as the original gap, while the image in the side with free boundary has the opposite orientation. This, together with the parallel between the correlation of gaps in dimer packings and electrostatics we developed in previous work, provides evidence for a unified way of understanding the interaction of gaps with the boundary under mixed boundary conditions, which we phrase as a conjecture. While the electrostatic interpretation is equivalent to a steady state heat flow interpretation in the bulk, it turns out that the latter view is more natural in the context of the interaction of the gaps with the boundary.
The starting point for our analysis is an exact formula we prove for the number of lozenge tilings of certain trapezoidal regions with mixed boundary conditions, which is equivalent to a new, multi-parameter generalization of a classical plane partition enumeration problem (that of enumerating symmetric, self-complementary plane partitions).

We consider a generating function of the domino tilings of an Aztec rectangle with several boundary unit squares removed. Our generating function involves two statistics: the rank of the tiling and half number of vertical dominoes as in the Aztec diamond theorem by Elkies, Kuperberg, Larsen and Propp. In addition, our work deduces a combinatorial explanation for an interesting connection between the number of lozenge tilings of a semihexagon and the number of domino tilings of an Aztec rectangle.

We study the decompositions into irreducible components of tensor products and restrictions of irreducible representations of classical Lie groups as the rank of the group goes to infinity. We prove the Law of Large Numbers for the random counting measures describing the decomposition. This leads to two operations on measures which are deformations of the notions of the free convolution and the free projection. We further prove that if one replaces counting measures with others coming from the work of Perelomov and Popov on the higher order Casimir operators for classical groups, then the operations on the measures turn into the free convolution and projection themselves.
We also explain the relation between our results and limit shape theorems for uniformly random lozenge tilings with and without axial symmetry.

In their 2002 paper, Ciucu and Krattenthaler proved several product formulas for the number of lozenge tilings of various regions obtained from a centrally symmetric hexagon on the triangular lattice by removing maximal staircase regions from two non-adjacent corners. For the case when the staircases are removed from adjacent corners of the hexagon, they presented two conjectural formulas, whose proofs, as they remarked, seemed at the time "a formidable task". In this paper we prove those two conjectures. Our proofs proceed by first generalizing the conjectures, and then proving them by induction, using Kuo's graphical condensation method.
Enumeration of symmetric centered rhombus tilings of a hexagon
A rhombus tiling of a hexagon is said to be centered if it contains the central lozenge. We compute the number of vertically symmetric rhombus tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a, b, a, a, b, a$ which are centered. When $a$ is odd and $b$ is even, this shows that the probability that a random vertically symmetric rhombus tiling of a $a, b, a, a, b, a$ hexagon is centered is exactly the same as the probability that a random rhombus tiling of a $a, b, a, a, b, a$ hexagon is centered. This also leads to a factorization theorem for the number of all rhombus tilings of a hexagon which are centered.
Enumerations of lozenge tilings, lattice paths, and perfect matchings and the weak Lefschetz property
MacMahon enumerated the plane partitions in an $a \times b \times c$ box. These are in bijection to lozenge tilings of a hexagon, to certain perfect matchings, and to families of non-intersecting lattice paths. In this work we consider more general regions, called triangular regions, and establish signed versions of the latter three bijections. Indeed, we use perfect matchings and families of non-intersecting lattice paths to define two signs of a lozenge tiling. A combinatorial argument involving a new method, called resolution of a puncture, then shows that the signs are in fact equivalent. This provides in particular two different determinantal enumerations of these families. These results are then applied to study the weak Lefschetz property of Artinian quotients by monomial ideals of a three-dimensional polynomial ring. We establish sufficient conditions guaranteeing the weak Lefschetz property as well as the semistability of the syzygy bundle of the ideal, classify the type two algebras with the weak Lefschetz property, and study monomial almost complete intersections in depth. Furthermore, we develop a general method that often associates to an algebra that fails the weak Lefschetz property a toric surface that satisfies a Laplace equation. We also present examples of toric varieties that satisfy arbitrarily many Laplace equations. Our combinatorial methods allow us to address the dependence on the characteristic of the base field for many of our results.

We develop a new method for studying the asymptotics of symmetric polynomials of representation-theoretic origin as the number of variables tends to infinity. Several applications of our method are presented: We prove a number of theorems concerning characters of infinite-dimensional unitary group and their $q$-deformations. We study the behavior of uniformly random lozenge tilings of large polygonal domains and find the GUE-eigenvalues distribution in the limit. We also investigate similar behavior for alternating sign matrices (equivalently, six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions). Finally, we compute the asymptotic expansion of certain observables in $O(n=1)$ dense loop model.

A classical theorem of MacMahon states that the number of lozenge tilings of any centrally symmetric hexagon drawn on the triangular lattice is given by a beautifully simple product formula. In this paper we present a counterpart of this formula, corresponding to the {\it exterior} of a concave hexagon obtained by turning 120 degrees after drawing each side (MacMahon's hexagon is obtained by turning 60 degrees after each step).

We study large-scale height fluctuations of random stepped surfaces corresponding to uniformly random lozenge tilings of polygons on the triangular lattice. For a class of polygons (which allows arbitrarily large number of sides), we show that these fluctuations are asymptotically governed by a Gaussian free (massless) field. This complements the similar result obtained in Kenyon [Comm. Math. Phys. 281 (2008) 675-709] about tilings of regions without frozen facets of the limit shape. In our asymptotic analysis we use the explicit double contour integral formula for the determinantal correlation kernel of the model obtained previously in Petrov [Asymptotics of random lozenge tilings via Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes (2012) Preprint].

A Gelfand-Tsetlin scheme of depth N is a triangular array with m integers at level m, m=1,...,N, subject to certain interlacing constraints. We study the ensemble of uniformly random Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes with arbitrary fixed N-th row. We obtain an explicit double contour integral expression for the determinantal correlation kernel of this ensemble (and also of its q-deformation).
This provides new tools for asymptotic analysis of uniformly random lozenge tilings of polygons on the triangular lattice; or, equivalently, of random stepped surfaces. We work with a class of polygons which allows arbitrarily large number of sides. We show that the local limit behavior of random tilings (as all dimensions of the polygon grow) is directed by ergodic translation invariant Gibbs measures. The slopes of these measures coincide with the ones of tangent planes to the corresponding limit shapes described by Kenyon and Okounkov in arXiv:math-ph/0507007. We also prove that at the edge of the limit shape, the asymptotic behavior of random tilings is given by the Airy process.
In particular, our results cover the most investigated case of random boxed plane partitions (when the polygon is a hexagon).

We study random lozenge tilings of a certain shape in the plane called the Novak half-hexagon, and compute the correlation functions for this process. This model was introduced by Nordenstam and Young (2011) and has many intriguing similarities with a more well-studied model, domino tilings of the Aztec diamond. The most difficult step in the present paper is to compute the inverse of the matrix whose (i,j) entry is the binomial coefficient C(A, B_j - i) for indeterminate variables A and B_1, ..., B_n.
