A generalization of Foata's fundamental transformation and its applications to the right-quantum algebra
The right-quantum algebra was introduced recently by Garoufalidis, Lê and Zeilberger in their quantum generalization of the MacMahon master theorem. A combinatorial proof of this identity due to Konvalinka and Pak, and also the recent proof of the right-quantum Sylvester's determinant identity, make heavy use of a bijection related to the first fundamental transformation on words introduced by Foata. This paper makes explicit the connection between this transformation and right-quantum linear algebra identities; applications include a new combinatorial proof of the right-quantum matrix inverse theorem, and two new results, the right-quantum Jacobi ratio theorem and a generalization of the right-quantum MacMahon master thorem.

Euler-Mahonian triple set-valued statistics on permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The inversion number and the major index are equidistributed on the symmetric group. This is a classical result, first proved by MacMahon, then by Foata by means of a combinatorial bijection. Ever since many refinements have been derived, which consist of adding new statistics, or replacing integral-valued statistics by set-valued ones. See the works by Foata-Schutzenberger, Skandera, Foata-Han and more recently by Hivert-Novelli-Thibon. In the present paper we derive a general equidistribution property on Euler-Mahonian set-valued statistics on permutations, which unifies the above four refinements. We also state and prove the so-called "complement property" of the Majcode.

Shifted Schur process and asymptotics of large random strict plane partitions
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices (2007), Vol 2007, article ID rnm043, 53 pages • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we define the shifted Schur process as a measure on sequences of strict partitions. This process is a generalization of the shifted Schur measure introduced in [TW] and [Mat] and is a shifted version of the Schur process introduced in [OR]. We prove that the shifted Schur process defines a Pfaffian point process. We further apply this fact to compute the bulk scaling limit of the correlation functions for a measure on strict plane partitions which is an analog of the uniform measure on ordinary plane partitions. As a byproduct, we obtain a shifted analog of the famous MacMahon's formula.

$n$-Colour self-inverse compositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
MacMahon's definition of self-inverse composition is extended to $n$-colour self-inverse composition. This introduces four new sequences which satisfy the same recurrence relation with different initial conditions like the famous Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. For these new sequences explicit formulas, recurrence relations, generating functions and a summation formula are obtained. Two new binomial identities with combinatorial meaning are also given.

An algebraic extension of the MacMahon Master Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new algebraic extension of the classical MacMahon Master Theorem. The basis of our extension is the Koszul duality for non-quadratic algebras defined by Berger. Combinatorial implications are also discussed.

Non-commutative extensions of the MacMahon Master Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present several non-commutative extensions of the MacMahon Master Theorem, further extending the results of Cartier-Foata and Garoufalidis-Le-Zeilberger. The proofs are combinatorial and new even in the classical cases. We also give applications to the $β$-extension and Krattenthaler-Schlosser's $q$-analogue.

Labeled Partitions and the q-Derangement Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
By a re-examination of MacMahon's original proof of his celebrated theorem on the distribution of the major indices over permutations, we give a reformulation of his argument in terms of the structure of labeled partitions. In this framework, we are able to establish a decomposition theorem for labeled partitions that leads to a simple bijective proof of Wachs' formula on the q-derangement numbers.

Five Guidelines for Partition Analysis with Applications to Lecture Hall-type Theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Five simple guidelines are proposed to compute the generating function for the nonnegative integer solutions of a system of linear inequalities. In contrast to other approaches, the emphasis is on deriving recurrences. We show how to use the guidelines strategically to solve some nontrivial enumeration problems in the theory of partitions and compositions. This includes a strikingly different approach to lecture hall-type theorems, with new $q$-series identities arising in the process. For completeness, we prove that the guidelines suffice to find the generating function for any system of homogeneous linear inequalities with integer coefficients. The guidelines can be viewed as a simplification of MacMahon's partition analysis with ideas from matrix techiniques, Elliott reduction, and ``adding a slice''.

A basis for the right quantum algebra and the "1=q" principle
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a basis for the right quantum algebra introduced by Garoufalidis, Le and Zeilberger and give a method making it possible to go from an algebra submitted to commutation relations (without the variable q) to the right quantum algebra by means of an appropriate weight-function. As a consequence, a strong quantum MacMahon Master Theorem is derived. Besides, the algebra of biwords is systematically in use.

Specializations and Extensions of the quantum MacMahon Master Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study some specializations and extensions of the quantum version of the MacMahon Master Theorem derived by Garoufalidis, Le and Zeilberger. In particular, we obtain a (t,q)-analogue for the Cartier-Foata noncommutative version and a semi-strong (t,q)-analogue for the contextual algebra.

Koszul algebras and the quantum MacMahon Master Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof of the quantum version of MacMahon's Master Theorem due to Garoufalidis, Le and Zeilberger (one-parameter case) and to Konvalinka and Pak (multiparameter case) by deriving it from known facts about Koszul algebras.

Equi-distribution over Descent Classes of the Hyperoctahedral Group
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of MacMahon shows that the length function and the major index are equi-distributed over the symmetric group. Foata and Schützenberger gave a remarkable refinement and proved that these parameters are equi-distributed over inverse descent classes, implying bivariate equi-distribution identities. Type $B$ analogues of these results, refinements and consequences are given in this paper.

Constructing All Magic Squares of Order Three

We find by applying MacMahon's partition analysis that all magic squares of order three, up to rotations and reflections, are of two types, each generated by three basis elements. A combinatorial proof of this fact is given.

A Fast Algorithm for MacMahon's Partition Analysis
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper deals with evaluating constant terms of a special class of rational functions, the Elliott-rational functions. The constant term of such a function can be read off immediately from its partial fraction decomposition. We combine the theory of iterated Laurent series and a new algorithm for partial fraction decompositions to obtain a fast algorithm for MacMahon's Omega calculus, which (partially) avoids the "run-time explosion" problem when eliminating several variables. We discuss the efficiency of our algorithm by investigating problems studied by Andrews and his coauthors; our running time is much less than that of their Omega package.

MacMahon-type Identities for Signed Even Permutations
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 11 (2004), #R83 • View PublicationBIB
MacMahon's classic theorem states that the 'length' and 'major index' statistics are equidistributed on the symmetric group S_n. By defining natural analogues or generalizations of those statistics, similar equidistribution results have been obtained for the alternating group A_n by Regev and Roichman, for the hyperoctahedral group B_n by Adin, Brenti and Roichman, and for the group of even-signed permutations D_n by Biagioli. We prove analogues of MacMahon's equidistribution theorem for the group of signed even permutations and for its subgroup of even-signed even permutations.

The Ring of Malcev-Neumann Series and the Residue Theorem
We develop a theory of the field of double Laurent series, iterated Laurent series, and Malcev-Neumann series that applies to most constant term evaluation problems. These include (i) MacMahon's partition analysis, counting solutions of systems of linear Diophantine equations or inequalities, counting the number of lattice points in convex polytopes, (ii) evaluating combinatorial sums and their generating functions, and proving combinatorial identities, and (iii) lattice path enumeration such as walks on the slit plane and walks on the quarter plane. In the general setting of this new theory, the natural definition of "taking the constant term" of a formal series works well and thus the operators of taking constant terms commute with each other. The proof of Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer's conjecture about walks on the slit plane is included. In addition, the counting problem of walks on the half plane avoiding the half line is solved. Jacobi's multivariate residue theorem is generalized to a field of Malcev-Neumann series, which gives a new interpretation and a better understanding of the residue theorem. One application of the residue theorem is a concise proof of Dyson's conjecture. A new algorithm for partial fraction decompositions is developed. This new algorithm is fast and uses little storage space. It also results in an efficient algorithm for MacMahon's partition analysis and related constant term evaluations.

Statistics on Wreath Products and Generalized Binomial-Stirling Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Various statistics on wreath products are defined via canonical words, "colored" right to left minima and "colored" descents. It is shown that refined counts with respect to these statistics have nice recurrence formulas of binomial-Stirling type. These extended Stirling numbers determine (via matrix inversion) dual systems, which are also shown to have combinatorial realizations within the wreath product. The above setting also gives rise to MacMahon type equi-distribution theorem over subsets with prescribed statistics.

Signed Mahonians
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of MacMahon gives a simple product formula for the generating function of major index over the symmetric group. A similar factorial-type product formula for the generating function of major index together with sign was given by Gessel and Simion. Several extensions are given in this paper, including a recurrence formula, a specialization at roots of unity and type $B$ analogues.
