Non-magic Hypergraphs
This article studies a generalization of magic squares to $k$-uniform hypergraphs. In traditional magic squares the entries come from the natural numbers. A magic labeling of the vertices in a graph or hypergraph has since been generalized to allow for labels coming from any abelian group. We demonstrate an algorithm for determining whether a given hypergraph has a magic labeling over some abelian group. A slight adjustment of this algorithm also allows one to determine whether a given hypergraph can be magically labeled over $\mathbb{Z}$. As a demonstration, we use these algorithms to determine the number of magic $n_3$-configurations for $n=7, \dots, 14$.
Distance magic labelings of product graphs
A graph $G$ is said to be distance magic if there exists a bijection $f:V\rightarrow \{1,2, \ldots , v\}$ and a constant {\sf k} such that for any vertex $x$, $\sum_{y\in N(x)} f(y) ={\sf k}$, where $N_(x)$ is the set of all neighbours of $x$. In this paper we shall study distance magic labelings of graphs obtained from four graph products: cartesian, strong, lexicographic, and cronecker. We shall utilise magic rectangle sets and magic column rectangles to construct the labelings.

Orientable $\mathbb{Z}{}_{n}$-distance magic regular graphs

Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz conjectured that every connected undirected graph admits an antimagic orientation. In this paper we support the analogous question for distance magic labeling. Let $Γ$ be an Abelian group of order $n$. A \textit{directed $Γ$-distance magic labeling} of an oriented graph $\vec{G} = (V,A)$ of order $n$ is a bijection $\vec{l}:V \rightarrow Γ$ with the property that there is a \textit{magic constant} $μ\in Γ$ such that for every $x \in V(G)$ $ w(x) = \sum_{y \in N^{+}(x)}\vec{l}(y) - \sum_{y \in N^{-}(x)} \vec{l}(y) = μ. $ In this paper we provide an infinite family of odd regular graphs possessing an orientable $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$-distance magic labeling. Our results refer to lexicographic product of graphs. We also present a family of odd regular graphs that are not orientable $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$-distance magic.

Partially magic labelings and the Antimagic Graph Conjecture
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 78B (2017), Article 86 • Search Publication
The Antimagic Graph Conjecture asserts that every connected graph $G = (V, E)$ except $K_2$ admits an edge labeling such that each label $1, 2, \dots, |E|$ is used exactly once and the sums of the labels on all edges incident to a given vertex are distinct. On the other extreme, an edge labeling is magic if the sums of the labels on all edges incident to each vertex are the same. In this paper we approach antimagic labelings by introducing partially magic labelings, where "magic occurs'' just in a subset of $V$. We generalize Stanley's theorem about the magic graph labeling counting function to the associated counting function of partially magic labelings and prove that it is a quasi-polynomial of period at most $2$. This allows us to introduce weak antimagic labelings (for which repetition is allowed), and we show that every bipartite graph satisfies a weakened version of the Antimagic Graph Conjecture.

Spectra of Graphs and Closed Distance Magic Labelings
Published in Discrete Mathematics 339(7) (2016) 1915-1923 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of order $n$. A closed distance magic labeling of $G$ is a bijection $\ell \colon V(G)\rightarrow \{1,\ldots ,n\}$ for which there exists a positive integer $k$ such that $\sum_{x\in N[v]}\ell (x)=k$ for all $v\in V $, where $N[v]$ is the closed neighborhood of $v$. We consider the closed distance magic graphs in the algebraic context. In particular we analyze the relations between the closed distance magic labelings and the spectra of graphs. These results are then applied to the strong product of graphs with complete graph or cycle and to the circulant graphs. We end with a number theoretic problem whose solution results in another family of closed distance magic graphs somewhat related to the strong product.

On zero-sum $\mathbb{Z}_{2j}^k$-magic graphs

Let $G = (V,E)$ be a finite graph and let $(\mathbb{A},+)$ be an abelian group with identity 0. Then $G$ is \textit{$\mathbb{A}$-magic} if and only if there exists a function $φ$ from $E$ into $\mathbb{A} - \{0\}$ such that for some $c \in \mathbb{A}$, $\sum_{e \in E(v)} φ(e) = c$ for every $v \in V$, where $E(v)$ is the set of edges incident to $v$. Additionally, $G$ is \textit{zero-sum $\mathbb{A}$-magic} if and only if $φ$ exists such that $c = 0$. We consider zero-sum $\mathbb{A}$-magic labelings of graphs, with particular attention given to $\mathbb{A} = \mathbb{Z}_{2j}^k$. For $j \geq 1$, let $ζ_{2j}(G)$ be the smallest positive integer $c$ such that $G$ is zero-sum $\mathbb{Z}_{2j}^c$-magic if $c$ exists; infinity otherwise. We establish upper bounds on $ζ_{2j}(G)$ when $ζ_{2j}(G)$ is finite, and show that $ζ_{2j}(G)$ is finite for all $r$-regular $G$, $r \geq 2$. Appealing to classical results on the factors of cubic graphs, we prove that $ζ_4(G) \leq 2$ for a cubic graph $G$, with equality if and only if $G$ has no 1-factor. We discuss the problem of classifying cubic graphs according to the collection of finite abelian groups for which they are zero-sum group-magic.

Distance magic labeling in complete 4-partite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a complete $k$-partite simple undirected graph with parts of sizes $p_1\le p_2...\le p_k$. Let $P_j=\sum_{i=1}^jp_i$ for $j=1,...,k$. It is conjectured that $G$ has distance magic labeling if and only if $\sum_{i=1}^{P_j} (n-i+1)\ge j{{n+1}\choose{2}}/k$ for all $j=1,...,k$. The conjecture is proved for $k=4$, extending earlier results for $k=2,3$.

On consecutive edge magic total labeling of connected bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Since Sedlá$\breve{\mbox{c}}$ek introduced the notion of magic labeling of a graph in 1963, a variety of magic labelings of a graph have been defined and studied. In this paper, we study consecutive edge magic labelings of a connected bipartite graph. We make a very useful observation that there are only four possible values of $b$ for which a connected bipartite graph has a $b$-edge consecutive magic labeling. On the basis of this fundamental result, we deduce various interesting results on consecutive edge magic labelings of bipartite graphs, especially caterpillars and lobsters, which extends the results given by Sugeng and Miller.

A Conjecture on Zero-sum 3-magic Labeling of 5-regular Graphs
In this paper, we obtained that every 5-regular graph admits a zero-sum 3-magic labeling, which give an affirmative answer to a conjecture proposed by Saieed Akbari, Farhad Rahmati and Sanaz Zare in $Electron.$ $J.$ $Combin.$.
Magic labelings of distance at most 2
For an arbitrary set of distances $D\subseteq \{0,1, \ldots, d\}$, a graph $G$ is said to be $D$-distance magic if there exists a bijection $f:V\rightarrow \{1,2, \ldots , v\}$ and a constant {\sf k} such that for any vertex $x$, $\sum_{y\in N_D(x)} f(y) ={\sf k}$, where $N_D(x) = \{y \in V| d(x,y) \in D\}$. In this paper we study some necessary or sufficient conditions for the existence of $D$-distance magic graphs, some of which are generalization of conditions for the existence of $\{1\}$-distance magic graphs. More specifically, we study $D$-distance magic labelings for cycles and $D$-distance magic graphs for $D\subseteq\{0,1,2\}$.

Group distance magic graphs $G\times C_n$
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 177(20) (2014) 80-87 • View PublicationBIB
A $Γ$-distance magic labeling of a graph $G=(V,E)$ with $|V | = n$ is a bijection $f$ from $V$ to an Abelian group $Γ$ of order $n$ such that the weight $w(x)=\sum_{y\in N_G(x)}f(y)$ of every vertex $x \in V$ is equal to the same element $μ\in Γ$, called the \emph{magic constant}. In this paper we will show that if $G$ is a graph of order $n=2^{p}(2k+1)$ for some natural numbers $p$, $k$ such that $°(v)\equiv c \imod {2^{p+2}}$ for some constant $c$ for any $v\in V(G)$, then there exists a $Γ$-distance magic labeling for any Abelian group $Γ$ of order $4n$ for the direct product $G\times C_4$. Moreover if $c$ is even then there exists a $Γ$-distance magic labeling for any Abelian group $Γ$ of order $8n$ for the direct product $G\times C_8$.

Note on group distance magic complete bipartite graphs

A $Γ$-distance magic labeling of a graph $G=(V,E)$ with $|V | = n$ is a bijection $\ell$ from $V$ to an Abelian group $Γ$ of order $n$ such that the weight $w(x)=\sum_{y\in N_G(x)}\ell(y)$ of every vertex $x \in V$ is equal to the same element $μ\in Γ$, called the \emph{magic constant}. A graph $G$ is called a \emph{group distance magic graph} if there exists a $Γ$-distance magic labeling for every Abelian group $Γ$ of order $|V(G)|$. In this paper we prove that some complete $k$-partite graphs are $\mathbb{Z}_p$-distance magic. Moreover we prove that $K_{m,n}$ is a group distance magic if and only if $n+m \not \equiv 2 \pmod 4$. We also show that if $n+m \equiv 2 \pmod 4$, then there does not exist a group $Γ$ of order $n+m$ such that there exists a $Γ$-distance labeling for $K_{m,n}$.
Distance magic labeling and two products of graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics (2015), Volume 31, Issue 5, 1125-1136 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of order $n$. A distance magic labeling of $G$ is a bijection $\ell \colon V\rightarrow {1,...,n}$ for which there exists a positive integer $k$ such that $\sum_{x\in N(v)}\ell (x)=k$ for all $v\in V $, where $N(v)$ is the neighborhood of $v$. We introduce a natural subclass of distance magic graphs. For this class we show that it is closed for the direct product with regular graphs and closed as a second factor for lexicographic product with regular graphs. In addition, we characterize distance magic graphs among direct product of two cycles.

A \emph{group distance magic labeling} or a $\gr$-distance magic labeling of a graph $G(V,E)$ with $|V | = n$ is an injection $f$ from $V$ to an Abelian group $\gr$ of order $n$ such that the weight $w(x)=\sum_{y\in N_G(x)}f(y)$ of every vertex $x \in V$ is equal to the same element $μ\in \gr$, called the magic constant. Moreover we prove that if $\gr$ is an arbitrary Abelian group of order $4n$ such that $\gr \cong \zet_2 \times\zet_2 \times \gA$ for some Abelian group $\gA$ of order $n$, then exists a $\gr$-distance magic labeling for any graph $G[C_4]$.

Algebraic Combinatorics of Magic Squares
We describe how to construct and enumerate Magic squares, Franklin squares, Magic cubes, and Magic graphs as lattice points inside polyhedral cones using techniques from Algebraic Combinatorics. The main tools of our methods are the Hilbert Poincare series to enumerate lattice points and the Hilbert bases to generate lattice points. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs, and give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.

Magic labelings of graphs are studied in great detail by Stanley and Stewart. In this article, we construct and enumerate magic labelings of graphs using Hilbert bases of polyhedral cones and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of polytopes. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs. We give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.
