Logical limit laws for minor-closed classes of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal G$ be an addable, minor-closed class of graphs. We prove that the zero-one law holds in monadic second-order logic (MSO) for the random graph drawn uniformly at random from all {\em connected} graphs in $\mathcal G$ on $n$ vertices, and the convergence law in MSO holds if we draw uniformly at random from all graphs in $\mathcal G$ on $n$ vertices. We also prove analogues of these results for the class of graphs embeddable on a fixed surface, provided we restrict attention to first order logic (FO). Moreover, the limiting probability that a given FO sentence is satisfied is independent of the surface $S$. We also prove that the closure of the set of limiting probabilities is always the finite union of at least two disjoint intervals, and that it is the same for FO and MSO. For the classes of forests and planar graphs we are able to determine the closure of the set of limiting probabilities precisely. For planar graphs it consists of exactly 108 intervals, each of length $\approx 5\cdot 10^{-6}$. Finally, we analyse examples of non-addable classes where the behaviour is quite different. For instance, the zero-one law does not hold for the random caterpillar on $n$ vertices, even in FO.

Fan-extensions in fragile matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
If S is a set of matroids, then the matroid M is S-fragile if, for every element e in E(M), either M\e or M/e has no minor isomorphic to a member of S. Excluded-minor characterizations often depend, implicitly or explicitly, on understanding classes of fragile matroids. In certain cases, when F is a minor-closed class of S-fragile matroids, and N is in F, the only members of F that contain N as a minor are obtained from N by increasing the length of fans. We prove that if this is the case, then we can certify it with a finite case-analysis. The analysis involves examining matroids that are at most two elements larger than N.

The Highly Connected Matroids in Minor-closed Classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any minor-closed class of matroids over a fixed finite field, we state an exact structural characterization for the sufficiently connected matroids in the class. We also state a number of conjectures that might be approachable using the structural characterization.

Forbidden Minors For 3-Connected Graphs With No Non-Splitting 5-Configurations
For a set of five edges, a graph splits if one of the associated Dodgson polynomials is equal to zero. A graph G splitting for every set of five edges is a minor-closed property. As such there is a finite set of forbidden minors F such that if a graph H does not contain a minor isomorphic to any graph in F, then H splits. In this paper we prove that if a graph G is simple, 3-connected, and splits, then G must not contain any minors isomorphic to K5, K3,3, the octahedron, the cube, or a graph that is a single delta-Y transformation away from the cube. As such this is the set of all simple 3-connected forbidden minors. The complete set of 2-connected or non-simple forbidden minors remains unresolved, though a number have been found.

Layered Separators in Minor-Closed Graph Classes with Applications
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory Series B 127:111-147, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Graph separators are a ubiquitous tool in graph theory and computer science. However, in some applications, their usefulness is limited by the fact that the separator can be as large as $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ in graphs with $n$ vertices. This is the case for planar graphs, and more generally, for proper minor-closed classes. We study a special type of graph separator, called a "layered separator", which may have linear size in $n$, but has bounded size with respect to a different measure, called the "width". We prove, for example, that planar graphs and graphs of bounded Euler genus admit layered separators of bounded width. More generally, we characterise the minor-closed classes that admit layered separators of bounded width as those that exclude a fixed apex graph as a minor. We use layered separators to prove $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$ bounds for a number of problems where $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n})$ was a long-standing previous best bound. This includes the nonrepetitive chromatic number and queue-number of graphs with bounded Euler genus. We extend these results with a $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$ bound on the nonrepetitive chromatic number of graphs excluding a fixed topological minor, and a $\log^{ \mathcal{O}(1)}n$ bound on the queue-number of graphs excluding a fixed minor. Only for planar graphs were $\log^{ \mathcal{O}(1)}n$ bounds previously known. Our results imply that every $n$-vertex graph excluding a fixed minor has a 3-dimensional grid drawing with $n\log^{ \mathcal{O}(1)}n$ volume, whereas the previous best bound was $\mathcal{O}(n^{3/2})$.

We show for each positive integer $a$ that, if $\mathcal{M}$ is a minor-closed class of matroids not containing all rank-$(a+1)$ uniform matroids, then there exists an integer $c$ such that either every rank-$r$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ can be covered by at most $r^c$ rank-$a$ sets, or $\mathcal{M}$ contains the GF$(q)$-representable matroids for some prime power $q$ and every rank-$r$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ can be covered by at most $cq^r$ rank-$a$ sets. In the latter case, this determines the maximum density of matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ up to a constant factor.

Maximum degree in minor-closed classes of graphs
Given a class of graphs G closed under taking minors, we study the maximum degree Δ_n of random graphs from G with n vertices. We prove several lower and upper bounds that hold with high probability. Among other results, we find classes of graphs providing orders of magnitude for Δ_n not observed before, such us \log n/ \log \log \log n and \log n/ \log \log \log \log n.
Maximum Edge-Disjoint Paths in $k$-sums of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the approximability of the maximum edge-disjoint paths problem (MEDP) in undirected graphs, and in particular, the integrality gap of the natural multicommodity flow based relaxation for it. The integrality gap is known to be $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ even for planar graphs due to a simple topological obstruction and a major focus, following earlier work, has been understanding the gap if some constant congestion is allowed. In this context, it is natural to ask for which classes of graphs does a constant-factor constant-congestion property hold. It is easy to deduce that for given constant bounds on the approximation and congestion, the class of "nice" graphs is nor-closed. Is the converse true? Does every proper minor-closed family of graphs exhibit a constant factor, constant congestion bound relative to the LP relaxation? We conjecture that the answer is yes. One stumbling block has been that such bounds were not known for bounded treewidth graphs (or even treewidth 3). In this paper we give a polytime algorithm which takes a fractional routing solution in a graph of bounded treewidth and is able to integrally route a constant fraction of the LP solution's value. Note that we do not incur any edge congestion. Previously this was not known even for series parallel graphs which have treewidth 2. The algorithm is based on a more general argument that applies to $k$-sums of graphs in some graph family, as long as the graph family has a constant factor, constant congestion bound. We then use this to show that such bounds hold for the class of $k$-sums of bounded genus graphs.

Asymptotic properties of some minor-closed classes of graphs
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing 23 (5) pp. 749-795 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
Let A be a minor-closed class of labelled graphs, and let G_n be a random graph sampled uniformly from the set of n-vertex graphs of A. When n is large, what is the probability that G_n is connected? How many components does it have? How large is its biggest component? Thanks to the work of McDiarmid and his collaborators, these questions are now solved when all excluded minors are 2-connected. Using exact enumeration, we study a collection of classes A excluding non-2-connected minors, and show that their asymptotic behaviour may be rather different from the 2-connected case. This behaviour largely depends on the nature of dominant singularity of the generating function C(z) that counts connected graphs of A. We classify our examples accordingly, thus taking a first step towards a classification of minor-closed classes of graphs. Furthermore, we investigate a parameter that has not received any attention in this context yet: the size of the root component. It follows non-gaussian limit laws (beta and gamma), and clearly deserves a systematic investigation.

Counting matroids in minor-closed classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A flat cover is a collection of flats identifying the non-bases of a matroid. We introduce the notion of cover complexity, the minimal size of such a flat cover, as a measure for the complexity of a matroid, and present bounds on the number of matroids on $n$ elements whose cover complexity is bounded. We apply cover complexity to show that the class of matroids without an $N$-minor is asymptotically small in case $N$ is one of the sparse paving matroids $U_{2,k}$, $U_{3,6}$, $P_6$, $Q_6$, or $R_6$, thus confirming a few special cases of a conjecture due to Mayhew, Newman, Welsh, and Whittle. On the other hand, we show a lower bound on the number of matroids without $M(K_4)$-minor which asymptoticaly matches the best known lower bound on the number of all matroids, due to Knuth.

Random graphs from a weighted minor-closed class
Published • View PublicationBIB
There has been much recent interest in random graphs sampled uniformly from the n-vertex graphs in a suitable minor-closed class, such as the class of all planar graphs. Here we use combinatorial and probabilistic methods to investigate a more general model. We consider random graphs from a `well-behaved' class of graphs: examples of such classes include all minor-closed classes of graphs with 2-connected excluded minors (such as forests, series-parallel graphs and planar graphs), the class of graphs embeddable on any given surface, and the class of graphs with at most k vertex-disjoint cycles. Also, we give weights to edges and components to specify probabilities, so that our random graphs correspond to the random cluster model, appropriately conditioned. We find that earlier results extend naturally in both directions, to general well-behaved classes of graphs, and to the weighted framework, for example results concerning the probability of a random graph being connected; and we also give results on the 2-core which are new even for the uniform (unweighted) case.

We show for each positive integer $a$ that, if $\cM$ is a minor-closed class of matroids not containing all rank-$(a+1)$ uniform matroids, then there exists an integer $n$ such that either every rank-$r$ matroid in $\cM$ can be covered by at most $r^n$ sets of rank at most $a$, or $\cM$ contains the $\GF(q)$-representable matroids for some prime power $q$, and every rank-$r$ matroid in $\cM$ can be covered by at most $r^nq^r$ sets of rank at most $a$. This determines the maximum density of the matroids in $\cM$ up to a polynomial factor.

Obstructions for two-vertex alternating embeddings of graphs in surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
A class of graphs that lies strictly between the classes of graphs of genus (at most) $k-1$ and $k$ is studied. For a fixed orientable surface $S_k$ of genus $k$, let $A_{xy}^k$ be the minor-closed class of graphs with terminals $x$ and $y$ that either embed into $S_{k-1}$ or admit an embedding $Π$ into $S_k$ such that there is a $Π$-face where $x$ and $y$ appear twice in the alternating order. In this paper, the obstructions for the classes $A_{xy}^k$ are studied. In particular, the complete list of obstructions for $A_{xy}^1$ is presented.

On minor-closed classes of matroids with exponential growth rate
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\cM$ be a minor-closed class of matroids that does not contain arbitrarily long lines. The growth rate function, $h:\bN\rightarrow \bN$ of $\cM$ is given by $$h(n) = \max(|M|\, : \, M\in \cM, simple, rank-$n$).$$ The Growth Rate Theorem shows that there is an integer $c$ such that either: $h(n)\le c\, n$, or ${n+1 \choose 2} \le h(n)\le c\, n^2$, or there is a prime-power $q$ such that $\frac{q^n-1}{q-1} \le h(n) \le c\, q^n$; this separates classes into those of linear density, quadratic density, and base-$q$ exponential density. For classes of base-$q$ exponential density that contain no $(q^2+1)$-point line, we prove that $h(n) =\frac{q^n-1}{q-1}$ for all sufficiently large $n$. We also prove that, for classes of base-$q$ exponential density that contain no $(q^2+q+1)$-point line, there exists $k\in\bN$ such that $h(n) = \frac{q^{n+k}-1}{q-1} - q\frac{q^{2k}-1}{q^2-1}$ for all sufficiently large $n$.

Constant-factor approximation of domination number in sparse graphs
The k-domination number of a graph is the minimum size of a set X such that every vertex of G is in distance at most k from X. We give a linear time constant-factor approximation algorithm for k-domination number in classes of graphs with bounded expansion, which include e.g. proper minor-closed graph classes, classes closed on topological minors or classes of graphs that can be drawn on a fixed surface with bounded number of crossings on each edge. The algorithm is based on the following approximate min-max characterization. A subset A of vertices of a graph G is d-independent if the distance between each pair of vertices in A is greater than d. Note that the size of the largest 2k-independent set is a lower bound for the k-domination number. We show that every graph from a fixed class with bounded expansion contains a 2k-independent set A and a k-dominating set D such that |D|=O(|A|), and these sets can be found in linear time. For domination number (k=1) the assumptions can be relaxed, and the result holds for all graph classes with arrangeability bounded by a constant.

Growth rate functions of dense classes of representable matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
For each proper minor-closed subclass $\cM$ of the $\GF(q^2)$-representable matroids containing all simple $\GF(q)$-representable matroids, we give, for all large $r$, a tight upper bound on the number of points in a rank-$r$ matroid in $\cM$, and construct a rank-$r$ matroid in $\cM$ for which equality holds. As a consequence, we give a tight upper bound on the number of points in a $\GF(q^2)$-representable, rank-$r$ matroid with no $\PG(k,q^2)$-minor.

Densities of Minor-Closed Graph Families
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 17(1), Paper R136, 2010 • View PublicationBIB
We define the limiting density of a minor-closed family of simple graphs F to be the smallest number k such that every n-vertex graph in F has at most kn(1+o(1)) edges, and we investigate the set of numbers that can be limiting densities. This set of numbers is countable, well-ordered, and closed; its order type is at least ω^ω. It is the closure of the set of densities of density-minimal graphs, graphs for which no minor has a greater ratio of edges to vertices. By analyzing density-minimal graphs of low densities, we find all limiting densities up to the first two cluster points of the set of limiting densities, 1 and 3/2. For multigraphs, the only possible limiting densities are the integers and the superparticular ratios i/(i+1).

The Complexity of Two Graph Orientation Problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider two orientation problems in a graph, namely the minimization of the sum of all the shortest path lengths and the minimization of the diameter. We show that it is NP-complete to decide whether a graph has an orientation such that the sum of all the shortest paths lengths is at most an integer specified in the input. The proof is a short reduction from a result of Chvátal and Thomassen showing that it is NP-complete to decide whether a graph can be oriented so that its diameter is at most 2. In contrast, for each positive integer k, we describe a linear-time algorithm that decides for a planar graph G whether there is an orientation for which the diameter is at most k. We also extend this result from planar graphs to any minor-closed family not containing all apex graphs.
A note on dilation coefficient, plane-width, and resolution coefficient of graphs
In this note we study and compare three graph invariants related to the 'compactness' of graph drawing in the plane: the dilation coefficient, defined as the smallest possible quotient between the longest and the shortest edge length; the plane-width, which is the smallest possible quotient between the largest distance between any two points and the shortest length of an edge; and the resolution coefficient, the smallest possible quotient between the longest edge length and the smallest distance between any two points. These three invariants coincide for complete graphs. We show that graphs with large dilation coefficient or plane-width have a vertex with large valence but there exist cubic graphs with arbitrarily large resolution coefficient. Surprisingly enough, the one-dimensional analogues of these three invariants allow us to revisit the three well known graph parameters: the circular chromatic number, the chromatic number, and the bandwidth. We also examine the connection between bounded resolution coefficient and minor-closed graph classes.
