Log-concavity, ultra-log-concavity, and a maximum entropy property of discrete compound Poisson measures
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, vol 161/9, pages 1232-1250, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Sufficient conditions are developed, under which the compound Poisson distribution has maximal entropy within a natural class of probability measures on the nonnegative integers. Recently, one of the authors [O. Johnson, {\em Stoch. Proc. Appl.}, 2007] used a semigroup approach to show that the Poisson has maximal entropy among all ultra-log-concave distributions with fixed mean. We show via a non-trivial extension of this semigroup approach that the natural analog of the Poisson maximum entropy property remains valid if the compound Poisson distributions under consideration are log-concave, but that it fails in general. A parallel maximum entropy result is established for the family of compound binomial measures. Sufficient conditions for compound distributions to be log-concave are discussed and applications to combinatorics are examined; new bounds are derived on the entropy of the cardinality of a random independent set in a claw-free graph, and a connection is drawn to Mason's conjecture for matroids. The present results are primarily motivated by the desire to provide an information-theoretic foundation for compound Poisson approximation and associated limit theorems, analogous to the corresponding developments for the central limit theorem and for Poisson approximation. Our results also demonstrate new links between some probabilistic methods and the combinatorial notions of log-concavity and ultra-log-concavity, and they add to the growing body of work exploring the applications of maximum entropy characterizations to problems in discrete mathematics.

The number of cycles of specified normalized length in permutations
We compute the limiting distribution, as n approaches infinity, of the number of cycles of length between gamma n and delta n in a permutation of [n] chosen uniformly at random, for constants gamma, delta such that 1/(k+1) <= gamma < delta <= 1/k for some integer k. This distribution is supported on {0, 1, ... k} and has 0th, 1st, ..., kth moments equal to those of a Poisson distribution with parameter log (delta/gamma). For more general choices of gamma, delta we show that such a limiting distribution exists, which can be given explicitly in terms of certain integrals over intersections of hypercubes with half-spaces; these integrals are analytically intractable but a recurrence specifying them can be given. The results herein provide a basis of comparison for similar statistics on restricted classes of permutations.

A Symbolic Computational Approach to a Problem Involving Multivariate Poisson Distributions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Multivariate Poisson random variables subject to linear integer constraints arise in several application areas, such as queuing and biomolecular networks. This note shows how to compute conditional statistics in this context, by employing WF Theory and associated algorithms. A symbolic computation package has been developed and is made freely available. A discussion of motivating biomolecular problems is also provided.

Univariate approximations in the infinite occupancy scheme
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper concerns the classical occupancy scheme with infinitely many boxes. We establish approximations to the distributions of the number of occupied boxes, and of the number of boxes containing exactly r balls, within the family of translated Poisson distributions. These are shown to be of ideal asymptotic order, with respect both to total variation distance and to the approximation of point probabilities. The proof is probabilistic, making use of a translated Poisson approximation theorem of Röllin (2005).

Convergence Properties of Kemp's q-Binomial Distribution
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider Kemp's q-analogue of the binomial distribution. Several convergence results involving the classical binomial, the Heine, the discrete normal, and the Poisson distribution are established. Some of them are q-analogues of classical convergence properties. Besides elementary estimates, we apply Mellin transform asymptotics.

On fixed points of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The number of fixed points of a random permutation of 1,2,...,n has a limiting Poisson distribution. We seek a generalization, looking at other actions of the symmetric group. Restricting attention to primitive actions, a complete classification of the limiting distributions is given. For most examples, they are trivial -- almost every permutation has no fixed points. For the usual action of the symmetric group on k-sets of 1,2,...,n, the limit is a polynomial in independent Poisson variables. This exhausts all cases. We obtain asymptotic estimates in some examples, and give a survey of related results.
Connectivity and equilibrium in random games
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2011, Vol. 21, No. 3, 987-1016 • View PublicationBIB
We study how the structure of the interaction graph of a game affects the existence of pure Nash equilibria. In particular, for a fixed interaction graph, we are interested in whether there are pure Nash equilibria arising when random utility tables are assigned to the players. We provide conditions for the structure of the graph under which equilibria are likely to exist and complementary conditions which make the existence of equilibria highly unlikely. Our results have immediate implications for many deterministic graphs and generalize known results for random games on the complete graph. In particular, our results imply that the probability that bounded degree graphs have pure Nash equilibria is exponentially small in the size of the graph and yield a simple algorithm that finds small nonexistence certificates for a large family of graphs. Then we show that in any strongly connected graph of n vertices with expansion $(1+Ω(1))\log_2(n)$ the distribution of the number of equilibria approaches the Poisson distribution with parameter 1, asymptotically as $n \to +\infty$.

Gibbs distributions for random partitions generated by a fragmentation process
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study random partitions of 1,...n, where every cluster of size j can be in any of w\_j possible internal states. The Gibbs (n,k,w) distribution is obtained by sampling uniformly among such partitions with k clusters. We provide conditions on the weight sequence w allowing construction of a partition valued random process where at step k the state has the Gibbs (n,k,w) distribution, so the partition is subject to irreversible fragmentation as time evolves. For a particular one-parameter family of weight sequences w\_j, the time-reversed process is the discrete Marcus-Lushnikov coalescent process with affine collision rate K\_{i,j}=a+b(i+j) for some real numbers a and b. Under further restrictions on a and b, the fragmentation process can be realized by conditioning a Galton-Watson tree with suitable offspring distribution to have n nodes, and cutting the edges of this tree by random sampling of edges without replacement, to partition the tree into a collection of subtrees. Suitable offspring distributions include the binomial, negative binomial and Poisson distributions.
Probabilistic Extensions of the Erd\H os-Ko-Rado Property
Published in Methodology and Computing in Applied Probability, 8, 357-371, 2006 • View PublicationBIB
The classical Erd\H os-Ko-Rado (EKR) Theorem states that if we choose a family of subsets, each of size (k), from a fixed set of size (n (n > 2k)), then the largest possible pairwise intersecting family has size (t ={n-1\choose k-1}). We consider the probability that a randomly selected family of size (t=t_n) has the EKR property (pairwise nonempty intersection) as $n$ and $k=k_n$ tend to infinity, the latter at a specific rate. As $t$ gets large, the EKR property is less likely to occur, while as $t$ gets smaller, the EKR property is satisfied with high probability. We derive the threshold value for $t$ using Janson's inequality. Using the Stein-Chen method we show that the distribution of $X_0$, defined as the number of disjoint pairs of subsets in our family, can be approximated by a Poisson distribution. We extend our results to yield similar conclusions for $X_i$, the number of pairs of subsets that overlap in exactly $i$ elements. Finally, we show that the joint distribution $(X_0, X_1, ..., X_b)$ can be approximated by a multidimensional Poisson vector with independent components.

Cigler simple derivation of usual and extended Dobinski formula is recalled and it is noted that both may be interpreted as averages of powers of random variables with the corresponding usual or extended Poisson distributions. In parallel more general formulas of extended operator umbral calculi origin are revealed . The formulas encompass both earlier cases as very specific ones.

Free cumulants and enumeration of connected partitions
Published in European J. Combin. 23 (2002), no. 8, 1025--1031 • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial formula is derived which expresses free cumulants in terms of classical comulants. As a corollary, we give a combinatorial interpretation of free cumulants of classical distributions, notably Gaussian and Poisson distributions. The latter count connected pairings and connected set partitions respectively. The proof relies on Moebius inversion on the partition lattice.
