We consider operators acting on convex subsets of the unit hypercube. These operators are used in constructing convex relaxations of combinatorial optimization problems presented as a 0,1 integer programming problem or a 0,1 polynomial optimization problem. Our focus is mostly on operators that, when expressed as a lift-and-project operator, involve the use of semidefiniteness constraints in the lifted space, including operators due to Lasserre and variants of the Sherali--Adams and Bienstock--Zuckerberg operators. We study the performance of these semidefinite-optimization-based lift-and-project operators on some elementary polytopes --- hypercubes that are chipped (at least one vertex of the hypercube removed by intersection with a closed halfspace) or cropped (all $2^n$ vertices of the hypercube removed by intersection with $2^n$ closed halfspaces) to varying degrees of severity $ρ$. We prove bounds on $ρ$ where these operators would perform badly on the aforementioned examples. We also show that the integrality gap of the chipped hypercube is invariant under the application of several lift-and-project operators of varying strengths.
Graph parameters, Ramsey theory and the speed of hereditary properties

The speed of a hereditary property $P$ is the number $P_n$ of $n$-vertex labelled graphs in $P$. It is known that the rates of growth of $P_n$ constitute discrete layers and the speed jumps, in particular, from constant to polynomial, from polynomial to exponential and from exponential to factorial. One more jump occurs when the entropy $\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{\log_2 P_n}{\binom{n}{2}}$ changes from 0 to a nonzero value. In the present paper, for each of these jumps we identify a graph parameter responsible for it, i.e. we show that a jump of the speed coincides with a jump of the respective parameter from finitude to infinity. In particular, we show that the speed of a hereditary property $P$ is sub-factorial if and only if the neighbourhood diversity of graphs in $P$ is bounded by a constant, and that the entropy of a hereditary property $P$ is 0 if and only if the VC-dimension of graphs in $P$ is bounded by a constant. All the result are obtained by Ramsey-type arguments.

In this note, we simplify the statements of theorems attributed to Cauchy and Ostrovsky and give proofs of each theorem via combinatorial and nonnegative matrix theory. We also show that each simple sufficient condition in each statement is also necessary in its respective case. In addition, we introduce the notion of a spectrally Perron polynomial and pose a problem that appeals to a wide mathematical audience.
Graphic TSP in cubic graphs
We present a polynomial-time 9/7-approximation algorithm for the graphic TSP for cubic graphs, which improves the previously best approximation factor of 1.3 for 2-connected cubic graphs and drops the requirement of 2-connectivity at the same time. To design our algorithm, we prove that every simple 2-connected cubic n-vertex graph contains a spanning closed walk of length at most 9n/7-1, and that such a walk can be found in polynomial time.

Let $G = (N,E,w)$ be a weighted communication graph (with weight function $w$ on $E$). For every subset $A \subseteq N$, we delete in the subset $E(A)$ of edges with ends in $A$, all edges of minimum weight in $E(A)$. Then the connected components of the corresponding induced subgraph constitute a partition of $A$ that we call $P_{\min}(A)$. For every game $(N, v)$, we define the $P_{\min}$-restricted game $(N, \bar{v})$ by $\bar{v}(A) = \sum_{F \in P_{\min}(A)} v(F)$ for all $A \subseteq N$. We prove that we can decide in polynomial time if there is inheritance of $\mathcal{F}$-convexity from $(N, v)$ to the $P_{\min}$-restricted game $(N, \bar{v})$ where $\mathcal{F}$-convexity is obtained by restricting convexity to connected subsets.
Central elements in U(gl(n)), shifted symmetric functions and the superalgebraic Capelli's method of virtual variables
In this work, we propose a new method for a unified study of some of the main features of the theory of the center of the enveloping algebra U(gl(n)) and of the algebra of shifted symmetric polynomials, that allows the whole theory to be developed, in a transparent and concise way, from the representation-theoretic point of view, that is entirely in the center of U(gl(n)). Our methodological innovation is the systematic use of the superalgebraic method of virtual variables for gl(n), which is, in turn, an extension of Capelli's method of "variabili ausiliarie".
Total dominating sequences in trees, split graphs, and under modular decomposition
A sequence of vertices in a graph $G$ with no isolated vertices is called a total dominating sequence if every vertex in the sequence totally dominates at least one vertex that was not totally dominated by preceding vertices in the sequence, and, at the end all vertices of $G$ are totally dominated (by definition a vertex totally dominates its neighbors). The maximum length of a total dominating sequence is called the Grundy total domination number, $γ_{\rm gr}^t(G)$, of $G$, as introduced in [B. Brešar, M.A. Henning, and D. F. Rall, Total dominating sequences in graphs, Discrete Math. 339 (2016), 1165--1676]. In this paper we continue the investigation of this concept, mainly from the algorithmic point of view. While it was known that the decision version of the problem is NP-complete in bipartite graphs, we show that this is also true if we restrict to split graphs. A linear time algorithm for determining the Grundy total domination number of an arbitrary tree $T$ is presented, based on the formula $γ_{\rm gr}^t(T)=2τ(T)$, where $τ(T)$ is the vertex cover number of $T$. A similar efficient algorithm is presented for bipartite distance-hereditary graphs. Using the modular decomposition of a graph, we present a frame for obtaining polynomial algorithms for this problem in classes of graphs having relatively simple modular subgraphs. In particular, a linear algorithm for determining the Grundy total domination number of $P_4$-tidy graphs is presented. In addition, we prove a realization result by exhibiting a family of graphs $G_k$ such that $γ_{\rm gr}^t(G_k)=k$, for any $k\in{\mathbb{Z}^+}\setminus\{1,3\}$, and showing that there are no graphs $G$ with $γ_{\rm gr}^t(G)\in \{1,3\}$. We also present such a family, which has minimum possible order and size among all graphs with Grundy total domination number equal to $k$.
Polynomials and Second Order Linear Recurrences
One of the most interesting results of the last century was the proof completed by Matijasevich that computably enumerable sets are precisely the diophantine sets [MRDP Theorem, 9], thus settling, based on previously developed machinery, Hilbert's question whether there exists a general algorithm for checking the solvability in integers of any diophantine equation. In this paper we describe techniques to prove the nonexistence of polynomials in two variables for some simple generalizations of the Fibonacci sequence (explicit diophantine representation of Fibonacci numbers were known from Jones' polynomial whose positive values have the same range as that of Fibonacci numbers), and we believe similar techniques exist for the primes. In this paper we mainly show the following results: (1) using one of the many techniques known for solving the Pell's equation, namely the solution in an extended number system, we prove the existence and explicitly find the polynomials for the recurrences of the form $e(n)=ae(n-1)+e(n-2)$ with starting values of 0 and 1 in particular, and for any arbitrary starting values, in the process defining a concept of fundamental starting numbers, (2) we prove a few identities that seem to be quite interesting and useful, (3) we use these identities in a novel way to generate systems of equations of certain rank deficiency using which we disprove for the first time the existence of any polynomial in 2 variables for the generalized recurrence of the form $e(n)=ae(n-1)+be(n-2)$
The expansion of polynomial invariants for $2$-decompositions of generalized graphs
The $2$-decomposition for ribbon graphs was introduced in [Annals of Combinatorics 15 (2011), pp 675-706]. We extend this result to half-edged ribbon graphs and to rank $D$-weakly colored graphs [SIGMA 12 (2016), 030], generalizing therefore the $2$-sums and tensor products of these graphs. Using this extension for the $2$-decompositions, we provide new expansion formulas for the Bollobás Riordan polynomial for half-edged ribbon graphs and also for the polynomial invariant for weakly colored stranded graphs.

We establish a combinatorial realization of continued fractions as quotients of cardinalities of sets. These sets are sets of perfect matchings of certain graphs, the snake graphs, that appear naturally in the theory of cluster algebras. To a continued fraction $[a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n]$, we associate a snake graph $\mathcal{G}[a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n]$ such that the continued fraction is the quotient of the number of perfect matchings of $\mathcal{G}[a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n]$ and $\mathcal{G}[a_2,\ldots,a_n]$. We also show that snake graphs are in bijection with continued fractions.
We then apply this connection between cluster algebras and continued fractions in two directions. First, we use results from snake graph calculus to obtain new identities for the continuants of continued fractions. Then, we apply the machinery of continued fractions to cluster algebras and obtain explicit direct formulas for quotients of elements of the cluster algebra as continued fractions of Laurent polynomials in the initial variables. Building on this formula, and using classical methods for infinite periodic continued fractions, we also study the asymptotic behavior of quotients of elements of the cluster algebra.

We discuss relations between quantum BPS invariants defined in terms of a product decomposition of certain series, and difference equations (quantum A-polynomials) that annihilate such series. We construct combinatorial models whose structure is encoded in the form of such difference equations, and whose generating functions (Hilbert-Poincaré series) are solutions to those equations and reproduce generating series that encode BPS invariants. Furthermore, BPS invariants in question are expressed in terms of Lyndon words in an appropriate language, thereby relating counting of BPS states to the branch of mathematics referred to as combinatorics on words. We illustrate these results in the framework of colored extremal knot polynomials: among others we determine dual quantum extremal A-polynomials for various knots, present associated combinatorial models, find corresponding BPS invariants (extremal Labastida-Mariño-Ooguri-Vafa invariants) and discuss their integrality.

Let $n\geq2$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the convexity of the so-called MacMahon's $q$-Catalan polynomials $C_n(q)=\frac1{[n+1]_q}\left[ 2n \atop n \right]_q$ as functions of $q$. Along the way, several intermediate results on inequalities are presented including a commentary on the convexity of the generation function for the integer partitions.

We obtain some recurrence relationships among the partition vectors of the partial exponential Bell polynomials. On using such results, the $n$-th Adomian polynomial for any nonlinear operator can be expressed explicitly in terms of the partial exponential Bell polynomials. Some new identities for the partial exponential Bell polynomials are obtained by solving certain ordinary differential equations using Adomian decomposition method.

Let $Φ$ be an irreducible (possibly noncrystallographic) root system of rank $l$ of type $P$. For the corresponding cluster complex $Δ(P)$, which is known as pure $(l-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex, we define the generating function of the number of faces of $Δ(P)$ with dimension $i-1$, which is called the {\it $f$-polynomial}. We show that the $f$-polynomial has exactly $l$ simple real zeros on the interval $(0, 1)$ and the smallest root for the infinite series of type $A_l$, $B_l$ and $D_l$ monotone decreasingly converges to zero as the rank $l$ tends to infinity. We also consider the generating function (called the {\it $f^{+}$-polynomial}) of the number of faces of the positive part $Δ_{+}(P)$ of the complex $Δ(P)$ with dimension $i-1$, whose zeros are real and simple and are located in the interval $(0, 1]$, including a simple root at $t=1$. We show that the roots $\{ t^{+}_{P, ν+1} \}_{ν=1}^{l-1}$ in decreasing order of $f^{+}$-polynomial alternate with the roots $\{ t_{P, ν} \}_{ν=1}^{l}$ in decreasing order of $f$-polynomial.

Classical Gončarov polynomials are polynomials which interpolate derivatives. Delta Gončarov polynomials are polynomials which interpolate delta operators, e.g., forward and backward difference operators. We extend fundamental aspects of the theory of classical bivariate Gončarov polynomials and univariate delta Gončarov polynomials to the multivariate setting using umbral calculus. After introducing systems of delta operators, we define multivariate delta Gončarov polynomials, show that the associated interpolation problem is always solvable, and derive a generating function (an Appell relation) for them. We show that systems of delta Gončarov polynomials on an interpolation grid $Z \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ are of binomial type if and only if $Z = A\mathbb{N}^d$ for some $d\times d$ matrix $A$. This motivates our definition of delta Abel polynomials to be exactly those delta Gončarov polynomials which are based on such a grid. Finally, compact formulas for delta Abel polynomials in all dimensions are given for separable systems of delta operators. This recovers a former result for classical bivariate Abel polynomials and extends previous partial results for classical trivariate Abel polynomials to all dimensions.
Simple realizability of complete abstract topological graphs simplified

An abstract topological graph (briefly an AT-graph) is a pair $A=(G,\mathcal{X})$ where $G=(V,E)$ is a graph and $\mathcal{X}\subseteq {E \choose 2}$ is a set of pairs of its edges. The AT-graph $A$ is simply realizable if $G$ can be drawn in the plane so that each pair of edges from $\mathcal{X}$ crosses exactly once and no other pair crosses. We show that simply realizable complete AT-graphs are characterized by a finite set of forbidden AT-subgraphs, each with at most six vertices. This implies a straightforward polynomial algorithm for testing simple realizability of complete AT-graphs, which simplifies a previous algorithm by the author. We also show an analogous result for independent $\mathbb{Z}_2$-realizability, where only the parity of the number of crossings for each pair of independent edges is specified.

We show that the generating function $\sum_{n\ge0}M_n\,z^n$ for Motzkin numbers $M_n$, when coefficients are reduced modulo a given power of $2$, can be expressed as a polynomial in the basic series $\sum _{e\ge0} ^{} {z^{4^e}}/( {1-z^{2\cdot 4^e}})$ with coefficients being Laurent polynomials in $z$ and $1-z$. We use this result to determine $M_n$ modulo $8$ in terms of the binary digits of~$n$, thus improving, respectively complementing earlier results by Eu, Liu and Yeh [Europ. J. Combin. 29 (2008), 1449-1466] and by Rowland and Yassawi [J. Théorie Nombres Bordeaux 27 (2015), 245-288]. Analogous results are also shown to hold for related combinatorial sequences, namely for the Motzkin prefix numbers, Riordan numbers, central trinomial coefficients, and for the sequence of hex tree numbers.

Semiring complexity is the version of arithmetic circuit complexity that allows only two operations: addition and multiplication. We show that when the number of variables is fixed, the semiring complexity of a Schur polynomial $s_λ$ is $O(log(λ_1))$; here $λ_1$ is the largest part of the partition $λ$.
Quasi-matroidal classes of ordered simplicial complexes

We introduce the notion of a quasi-matroidal class of ordered simplicial complexes: an approximation to the idea of a matroid cryptomorphism in the landscape of ordered simplicial complexes. A quasi-matroidal class contains pure shifted simplicial complexes and ordered matroid independence complexes. The essential property is that if a fixed simplicial complex belongs to this class for every ordering of its vertex set, then it is a matroid independence complex. Some examples of such classes appear implicitly in the matroid theory literature. We introduce various such classes that highlight different apsects of matroid theory and its similarities with the theory of shifted simplicial complexes. For example, we lift the study of objects like the Tutte polynomial and nbc complexes to a quasi-matroidal class that allows us to define such objects for shifted complexes. Furthermore, some of the quasi-matroidal classes are amenable to inductive techniques that can't be applied directly in the context of matroid theory. As an example, we provide a suitable setting to reformulate and extend conjecture of Stanley about $h$-vectors of matroids which is expected to be tractable with techniques that are out of reach for matroids alone. This new conjecture holds for pure shifted simplicial complexes and matroids of rank up to 4.

We generalize the Bernstein-Sato polynomials of Budur, Mustata and Saito to ideals in normal semigroup rings. In the case of monomial ideals, we also relate the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial to the jumping coefficients of the corresponding multiplier ideals. In order to prove the latter result, we obtain a new combinatorial description for the multiplier ideals of a monomial ideal in a normal semigroup ring.
