Regular polytopes, sphere packings and Apollonian sections
Published in Geometriae Dedicata 218, 105 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we explore the geometry and the arithmetic of a family of polytopal sphere packings induced by regular polytopes in any dimension. We prove that every integral polytope is crystallographic, and we show that there are 11 crystallographic regular polytopes in any dimension. After introducing the notion of Apollonian section, we determine which Platonic crystallographic packings emerge as cross-sections of the Apollonian arrangements of the regular 4-polytopes. Additionally, we compute the Möbius spectrum of every regular polytope.

A family of regular polytopes of order $4p^m$ with type $\{p, 2p\}$
In this paper, we construct an infinite families of group $G$ of order $4p^m$ which can be an automorphism group of some regular polytope with type $\{p, 2p\}$, where $m \geq 3$ and $p$ is an odd prime. For $p=3$, our polytopes are the regular toroidal maps $\{3, 6\}$.

Unravelled Abstract Regular Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces the notion of an unravelled abstract regular polytope, and proves that $\SL_3(q) \rtimes <t>$, where $t$ is the transpose inverse automorphism of $\SL_3(q)$, possesses such polytopes for various congruences of $q$. A large number of small examples of such polytopes are given, along with extensive details of their various properties.

Infinite families of hypertopes from centrally symmetric polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct infinite families of abstract regular polytopes of type $\{4,p_1,\ldots,p_{n-1}\}$ from extensions of centrally symmetric spherical abstract regular $n$-polytopes. In addition, by applying the halving operation, we obtain infinite families of both locally spherical and locally toroidal regular hypertopes of type $\left\{{p_1 \atop p_1},\ldots,p_{n-1}\right\}$.
Constructing highly regular expanders from hyperbolic Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $X$ is defined inductively to be $(a_0,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular if $X$ is $a_0$-regular and for every vertex $v$ of $X$, the sphere of radius $1$ around $v$ is an $(a_1,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular graph. Such a graph $X$ is said to be highly regular (HR) of level $n$ if $a_{n-1}\neq 0$. Chapman, Linial and Peled studied HR-graphs of level 2 and provided several methods to construct families of graphs which are expanders "globally and locally". They ask whether such HR-graphs of level 3 exist. In this paper we show how the theory of Coxeter groups, and abstract regular polytopes and their generalisations, can lead to such graphs. Given a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a subset $M$ of $S$, we construct highly regular quotients of the 1-skeleton of the associated Wythoffian polytope $\mathcal{P}_{W,M}$, which form an infinite family of expander graphs when $(W,S)$ is indefinite and $\mathcal{P}_{W,M}$ has finite vertex links. The regularity of the graphs in this family can be deduced from the Coxeter diagram of $(W,S)$. The expansion stems from applying superapproximation to the congruence subgroups of the linear group $W$. This machinery gives a rich collection of families of HR-graphs, with various interesting properties, and in particular answers affirmatively the question asked by Chapman, Linial and Peled.

Locally spherical hypertopes from generlised cubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that every non-degenerate regular polytope can be used to construct a thin, residually-connected, chamber-transitive incidence geometry, i.e. a regular hypertope, with a tail-triangle Coxeter diagram. We discuss several interesting examples derived when this construction is applied to generalised cubes. In particular, we produce an example of a rank $5$ finite locally spherical proper hypertope of hyperbolic type.

Classifying Regular Polyhedra and Polytopes using Wythoff's Construction
Wythoff's construction associates a uniform polytope to a Coxeter diagram whose vertices are decorated with crosses, which indicate the subgroup stabilizing a generic point. Champagne, Kjiri, Patera, and Sharp remarked that by associating more information to a Coxeter diagram, one can furthermore determine the types and number of faces of such a polytope. This article provides a proof of this result, and uses it to provide a classification of the regular polytopes.

Regular $3$-polytopes of order $2^np$
In [Problems on polytopes, their groups, and realizations, Periodica Math. Hungarica 53 (2006) 231-255] Schulte and Weiss proposed the following problem: {\em Characterize regular polytopes of orders $2^np$ for $n$ a positive integer and $p$ an odd prime}. In this paper, we first prove that if a $3$-polytope of order $2^np$ has Schläfli type $\{k_1, k_2\}$, then $p \mid k_1$ or $p \mid k_2$. This leads to two classes, up to duality, for the Schläfli type, namely Type (1) where $k_1=2^sp$ and $k_2=2^t$ and Type (2) where $k_1=2^sp$ and $k_2=2^tp$. We then show that there exists a regular $3$-polytope of order $2^np$ with Type (1) when $s\geq 2$, $t\geq 2$ and $n\geq s+t+1$ coming from a general construction of regular $3$-polytopes of order $2^n\ell_1\ell_2$ with Schläfli type $\{2^s\ell_1,2^t\ell_2\}$ where both $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$ are odd. Furthermore, for $p=3$ and $n \geq 7$, we show that there exists a regular 3-polytope of order $3\cdot2^n$ with type $\{6,2^s\}$ if and only if $2\leq s \leq n-2$ and $s \neq n-3$. For Type (2), we prove that there exists a regular $3$-polytope of order $2^n\cdot 3$ with Schläfli type $\{6, 6\}$ when $n \ge 5$ coming from a general construction of regular $3$-polytopes of Schläfli type $\{6,6\}$ with orders $192m^3$, $384m^3$ or $768m^3$, for any positive integer $m$.

For each $d\geq 3$, $n \geq 10$, and $k_1, k_2, \ldots, k_{d-1}\geq 2$ with $k_1+k_2+\ldots+k_{d-1}\leq n-1$, we construct a regular $d$-polytope whose automorphism group is of order $2^n$ and whose Schläfli type is $\{2^{k_1},2^{k_2}, \ldots, 2^{k_{d-1}}\}$.

$2$-groups behaving as automorphism groups of regular $3$-polytopes
In this paper, we classify regular polytopes with automorphism groups of order $2^n$ and Schläfli types $\{4, 2^{n-3}\}, \{4, 2^{n-4}\}$ and $\{4, 2^{n-5}\}$ for $n \geq 10$, therefore giving a partial answer to a problem proposed by Schulte and Weiss in [Problems on polytopes, their groups, and realizations, Periodica Math. Hungarica 53(2006) 231-255].

Regular Incidence Complexes, Polytopes, and C-Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Regular incidence complexes are combinatorial incidence structures generalizing regular convex polytopes, regular complex polytopes, various types of incidence geometries, and many other highly symmetric objects. The special case of abstract regular polytopes has been well-studied. The paper describes the combinatorial structure of a regular incidence complex in terms of a system of distinguished generating subgroups of its automorphism group or a flag-transitive subgroup. Then the groups admitting a flag-transitive action on an incidence complex are characterized as generalized string C-groups. Further, extensions of regular incidence complexes are studied, and certain incidence complexes particularly close to abstract polytopes, called abstract polytope complexes, are investigated.

Non-flat regular polytopes and restrictions on chiral polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
An abstract polytope is \emph{flat} if every facet is incident on every vertex. In this paper, we prove that no chiral polytope has flat finite regular facets and finite regular vertex-figures. We then determine the three smallest non-flat regular polytopes in each rank, and use this to show that for $n \geq 8$, a chiral $n$-polytope has at least $48(n-2)(n-2)!$ flags.
Parabolic double cosets in Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Parabolic subgroups $W_I$ of Coxeter systems $(W,S)$, as well as their ordinary and double quotients $W / W_I$ and $W_I \backslash W / W_J$, appear in many contexts in combinatorics and Lie theory, including the geometry and topology of generalized flag varieties and the symmetry groups of regular polytopes. The set of ordinary cosets $w W_I$, for $I \subseteq S$, forms the Coxeter complex of $W$, and is well-studied. In this article we look at a less studied object: the set of all double cosets $W_I w W_J$ for $I, J \subseteq S$. Double coset are not uniquely presented by triples $(I,w,J)$. We describe what we call the lex-minimal presentation, and prove that there exists a unique such object for each double coset. Lex-minimal presentations are then used to enumerate double cosets via a finite automaton depending on the Coxeter graph for $(W,S)$. As an example, we present a formula for the number of parabolic double cosets with a fixed minimal element when $W$ is the symmetric group $S_n$ (in this case, parabolic subgroups are also known as Young subgroups). Our formula is almost always linear time computable in $n$, and we show how it can be generalized to any Coxeter group with little additional work. We spell out formulas for all finite and affine Weyl groups in the case that $w$ is the identity element.

Locally toroidal polytopes of rank 6 and sporadic groups
Published in Advances in Mathematics 312 (2017), 459--472 • View PublicationBIB
We augment the list of finite universal locally toroidal regular polytopes of type {3,3,4,3,3} due to P.McMullen and E.Schulte, adding as well as removing entries. This disproves a related long-standing conjecture. Our new universal polytope is related to a well-known Y-shaped presentation for the sporadic simple group $Fi_{22}$, and admits $S_4\times O_8^+(2){:}S_3$ as the automorphism group. We also discuss further extensions of its quotients in the context of Y-shaped presentations. As well, we note that two known examples of finite universal polytopes of type {3,3,4,3,3} are related to Y-shaped presentations of orthogonal groups over GF(2). Mixing construction is used in a number of places to describe covers and 2-covers.

C-groups of high rank for the symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify C-groups of ranks $n-1$ and $n-2$ for the symmetric group $S_n$. We also show that all these C-groups correspond to hypertopes, that is, thin, residually connected flag-transitive geometries. Therefore we generalise some similar results obtained in the framework of string C-groups that are in one-to-one correspondence with abstract regular polytopes.
An extension of the classification of high rank regular polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Up to isomorphism and duality, there are exactly two non-degenerate abstract regular polytopes of rank greater than $n-3$, one of rank $n-1$ and one of rank $n-2$, with automorphism groups that are transitive permutation groups of degree $n\geq 7$. In this paper we extend this classification of high rank regular polytopes to include the ranks $n-3$ and $n-4$. The result is, up to a isomorphism and duality, seven abstract regular polytopes of rank $n-3$ for each $n\geq 9$, and nine abstract regular polytopes of rank $n-4$ for each $n \geq 11$. Moreover we show that if a transitive permutation group $Γ$ of degree $n \geq 11$ is the automorphism group of an abstract regular polytope of rank at least $n-4$, then $Γ\cong S_n$.

The structure of mirrors on Platonic surfaces
A Platonic surface is a Riemann surface that underlies a regular map and so we can consider its vertices, edge-centres and face-centres. A symmetry (anticonformal involution) of the surface will fix a number of simple closed curves which we call mirrors. These mirrors must pass through the vertices, edge-centres and face-centres in some sequence which we call the pattern of the mirror. Here we investigate these patterns for various well-known families of Platonic surfaces, including genus 1 regular maps, and regular maps on Hurwitz surfaces and Fermat curves. The genesis of this paper is classical. Klein in Section 13 of his famous 1878 paper [11], worked out the pattern of the mirrors on the Klein quartic and Coxeter in his book on regular polytopes worked out the patterns for mirrors on the regular solids. We believe that this topic has not been pursued since then.

Hereditary Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Every regular polytope has the remarkable property that it inherits all symmetries of each of its facets. This property distinguishes a natural class of polytopes which are called hereditary. Regular polytopes are by definition hereditary, but the other polytopes in this class are interesting, have possible applications in modeling of structures, and have not been previously investigated. This paper establishes the basic theory of hereditary polytopes, focussing on the analysis and construction of hereditary polytopes with highly symmetric faces.

A class of quadratic difference equations on a finite graph
We study a class of complex polynomial equations on a finite graph with a view to understanding how holistic phenomena emerge from combinatorial structure. Particular solutions arise from orthogonal projections of regular polytopes, invariant frameworks and cyclic sequences. A set of discrete parameters for which there exist non-trivial solutions leads to the construction of a polynomial invariant and the notion of a geometric spectrum. Geometry then emerges, notably dimension, distance and curvature, from purely combinatorial properties of the graph.
