Distances on Rhombus Tilings
Published in Theor. Comput. Sci. 412(36): 4787-4794 (2011) • View PublicationBIB
The rhombus tilings of a simply connected domain of the Euclidean plane are known to form a flip-connected space (a flip is the elementary operation on rhombus tilings which rotates 180° a hexagon made of three rhombi). Motivated by the study of a quasicrystal growth model, we are here interested in better understanding how "tight" rhombus tiling spaces are flip-connected. We introduce a lower bound (Hamming-distance) on the minimal number of flips to link two tilings (flip-distance), and we investigate whether it is sharp. The answer depends on the number n of different edge directions in the tiling: positive for n=3 (dimer tilings) or n=4 (octogonal tilings), but possibly negative for n=5 (decagonal tilings) or greater values of n. A standard proof is provided for the n=3 and n=4 cases, while the complexity of the n=5 case led to a computer-assisted proof (whose main result can however be easily checked by hand).

Supersymmetry, lattice fermions, independence complexes and cohomology theory
Published in Adv. Theor. Math. Phys., 14.2 (2010), 643-694 • View PublicationBIB
We analyze the quantum ground state structure of a specific model of itinerant, strongly interacting lattice fermions. The interactions are tuned to make the model supersymmetric. Due to this, quantum ground states are in one-to-one correspondence with cohomology classes of the so-called independence complex of the lattice. Our main result is a complete description of the cohomology, and thereby of the quantum ground states, for a two-dimensional square lattice with periodic boundary conditions. Our work builds on results by J. Jonsson, who determined the Euler characteristic (Witten index) via a correspondence with rhombus tilings of the plane. We prove a theorem, first conjectured by P. Fendley, which relates dimensions of the cohomology at grade n to the number of rhombus tilings with n rhombi.
Plücker environments, wiring and tiling diagrams, and weakly separated set-systems
Published in Advances in Mathematics, 224, 2010, 1-44 • View PublicationBIB
For the ordered set $[n]$ of $n$ elements, we consider the class $\Bscr_n$ of bases $B$ of tropical Plücker functions on $2^{[n]}$ such that $B$ can be obtained by a series of mutations (flips) from the basis formed by the intervals in $[n]$. We show that these bases are representable by special wiring diagrams and by certain arrangements generalizing rhombus tilings on the $n$-zonogon. Based on the generalized tiling representation, we then prove that each weakly separated set-system in $2^{[n]}$ having maximum possible size belongs to $\Bscr_n$, thus answering affirmatively a conjecture due to Leclerc and Zelevinsky. We also prove an analogous result for a hyper-simplex $Δ_n^m=\{S\subseteq[n]\colon |S|=m\}$.

A factorization theorem for classical group characters, with applications to plane partitions and rhombus tilings
Published in in: Advances in Combinatorial Mathematics: Proceedings of the Waterloo Workshop in Computer Algebra 2008, I. Kotsireas, E. Zima (eds.), Springer-Verlag, 2010, pp. 39-60. • View PublicationBIB
We prove that a Schur function of rectangular shape $(M^n)$ whose variables are specialized to $x_1,x_1^{-1},...,x_n,x_n^{-1}$ factorizes into a product of two odd orthogonal characters of rectangular shape, one of which is evaluated at $-x_1,...,-x_n$, if $M$ is even, while it factorizes into a product of a symplectic character and an even orthogonal character, both of rectangular shape, if $M$ is odd. It is furthermore shown that the first factorization implies a factorization theorem for rhombus tilings of a hexagon, which has an equivalent formulation in terms of plane partitions. A similar factorization theorem is proven for the sum of two Schur functions of respective rectangular shapes $(M^n)$ and $(M^{n-1})$.

The Multidimensional Cube Recurrence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a recurrence which we term the multidimensional cube recurrence, generalizing the octahedron recurrence studied by Propp, Fomin and Zelevinsky, Speyer, and Fock and Goncharov and the three-dimensional cube recurrence studied by Fomin and Zelevinsky, and Carroll and Speyer. The states of this recurrence are indexed by tilings of a polygon with rhombi, and the variables in the recurrence are indexed by vertices of these tilings. We travel from one state of the recurrence to another by performing elementary flips. We show that the values of the recurrence are independent of the order in which we perform the flips; this proof involves nontrivial combinatorial results about rhombus tilings which may be of independent interest. We then show that the multidimensional cube recurrence exhibits the Laurent phenomenon -- any variable is given by a Laurent polynomial in the other variables. We recognize a special case of the multidimensional cube recurrence as giving explicit equations for the isotropic Grassmannians IG(n-1,2n). Finally, we describe a tropical version of the multidimensional cube recurrence and show that, like the tropical octahedron recurrence, it propagates certain linear inequalities.

A Schur function identity related to the (-1)-enumeration of self-complementary plane partitions
We give another proof for the (-1)-enumeration of self-complementary plane partitions with at least one odd side-length by specializing a certain Schur function identity. The proof is analogous to Stanley's proof for the ordinary enumeration. In addition, we obtain enumerations of 180-degree symmetric rhombus tilings of hexagons with a barrier of arbitrary length along the central line.

The scaling limit of the correlation of holes on the triangular lattice with periodic boundary conditions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the correlation of holes on the triangular lattice under periodic boundary conditions and study its asymptotics as the distances between the holes grow to infinity. We prove that the joint correlation of an arbitrary collection of lattice-triangular holes of even sides satisfies, for large separations between the holes, a Coulomb law and a superposition principle that perfectly parallel the laws of two dimensional electrostatics, with physical charges corresponding to holes, and their magnitude to the difference between the number of right-pointing and left-pointing unit triangles in each hole. We detail this parallel by indicating that, as a consequence of our result, the relative probabilities of finding a fixed collection of holes at given mutual distances (when sampling uniformly at random over all unit rhombus tilings of the complement of the holes) approaches, for large separations between the holes, the relative probabilities of finding the corresponding two dimensional physical system of charges at given mutual distances. Physical temperature corresponds to a parameter refining the background triangular lattice. We give an equivalent phrasing of our result in terms of covering surfaces of given holonomy. From this perspective, two dimensional electrostatics arises by averaging over all possible discrete geometries of the covering surfaces.

Non-intersecting, simple, symmetric random walks and the extended Hahn kernel
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider $a$ particles performing simple, symmetric, non-intersecting random walks, starting at points $2(j-1)$, $1\le j\le a$ at time 0 and ending at $2(j-1)+c-b$ at time $b+c$. This can also be interpreted as a random rhombus tiling of an $abc$-hexagon, or as a random boxed planar partition confined to a rectangular box with side lengths $a$, $b$ and $c$. The positions of the particles at all times gives a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel given in terms of the associated Hahn polynomials. In a suitable scaling limit we obtain non-intersecting Brownian motions which can be related to Dysons's Hermitian Brownian motion via a suitable transformation.

Flip dynamics in three-dimensional random tilings
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 38, 17-45 (2005) • View PublicationBIB
We study single-flip dynamics in sets of three-dimensional rhombus tilings with fixed polyhedral boundaries. This dynamics is likely to be slowed down by so-called ``cycles'': such structures arise when tilings are encoded via the ``partition-on-tiling'' method and are susceptible to break connectivity by flips or at least ergodicity, because they locally suppress a significant amount of flip degrees of freedom. We first address the so-far open question of the connectivity of tiling sets by elementary flips. We prove exactly that sets of tilings of codimension one and two are connected for any dimension and tiling size. For higher-codimension tilings of dimension 3, the answer depends on the precise choice of the edge orientations, which is a non-trivial issue. In most cases, we can prove connectivity despite the existence of cycles. In the few remaining cases, among which the icosahedral symmetry, the question remains open. We also study numerically flip-assisted diffusion to explore the possible effects of the previously mentioned cycles. Cycles do not seem to slow down significantly the dynamics, at least as far as self-diffusion is concerned.

Proof of two conjectures of Zuber on fully packed loop configurations
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 108 (2004), 123-146. • View PublicationBIB
Two conjectures of Zuber [``On the counting of fully packed loops configurations. Some new conjectures,'' preprint] on the enumeration of configurations in the fully packed loop model on the square grid with periodic boundary conditions, which have a prescribed linkage pattern, are proved. Following an idea of de Gier [``Loops, matchings and alternating-sign matrices,'' Discrete Math., to appear], the proofs are based on bijections between such fully packed loop configurations and rhombus tilings, and the hook-content formula for semistandard tableaux.

Descending plane partitions and rhombus tilings of a hexagon with triangular hole
Published in Europ. J. Combin. 27 (2006), 1138-1146. • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that the descending plane partitions of Andrews can be geometrically realized as cyclically symmetric rhombus tilings of a certain hexagon where an equilateral triangle of side length 2 has been removed from its centre. Thus, the lattice structure for descending plane partitions, as introduced by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey, allows for an elegant visualization.

A (conjectural) 1/3-phenomenon for the number of rhombus tilings of a hexagon which contain a fixed rhombus
Published in in: Number Theory and Discrete Mathematics, A. K. Agarwal et al., eds., Hindustan Book Agency, New Delhi, 2002, pp. 13-30. • View PublicationBIB
We state, discuss, provide evidence for, and prove in special cases the conjecture that the probability that a random tiling by rhombi of a hexagon with side lengths $2n+a,2n+b,2n+c,2n+a,2n+b,2n+c$ contains the (horizontal) rhombus with coordinates $(2n+x,2n+y)$ is equal to ${1/3} + g_{a,b,c,x,y}(n) {\binom {2n}{n}}^3 / \binom {6n}{3n}$, where $g_{a,b,c,x,y}(n)$ is a rational function in $n$. Several specific instances of this "1/3-phenomenon" are made explicit.

Non-intersecting Paths, Random Tilings and Random Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate certain measures induced by families of non-intersecting paths in domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, rhombus tilings of an abc-hexagon, a dimer model on a cylindrical brick lattice and a growth model. The measures obtained, e.g. the Krawtchouk and Hahn ensembles, have the same structure as the eigenvalue measures in random matrix theory like GUE, which can in fact be obtained from non-intersecting Brownian motions. The derivations of the measures are based on the Karlin-McGregor or Lindström-Gessel-Viennot method. We use the measure to show some asymptotic results for the models.

We compute the number of rhombus tilings of a hexagon with side lengths N,M,N,N,M,N, with N and M having the same parity, which contain a particular rhombus next to the center of the hexagon. The special case N=M of one of our results solves a problem posed by Propp. In the proofs, Hankel determinants featuring Bernoulli numbers play an important role.

Rhombus Tilings of a Hexagon with Three Fixed Border Tiles

The particular case $a=b=c$ solves a problem posed by Propp. Our result can also be viewed as the enumeration of plane partitions having $a+2$ rows and $b+2$ columns, with largest entry $\le c+2$, with a given number of entries $c+2$ in the first row, a given number of entries 0 in the last column and a given bottom-left entry.

The number of rhombus tilings of a "punctured" hexagon and the minor summation formula
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 21 1998, 381-404 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the number of all rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $a,b+1,c,a+1,b,c+1$, of which the central triangle is removed, provided $a,b,c$ have the same parity. The result is a product of four numbers, each of which counts the number of plane partitions inside a given box. The proof uses nonintersecting lattice paths and a new identity for Schur functions, which is proved by means of the minor summation formula of Ishikawa and Wakayama. A symmetric generalization of this identity is stated as a conjecture.
