The set of all permutations, ordered by pattern containment, forms a poset. This paper presents the first explicit major results on the topology of intervals in this poset. We show that almost all (open) intervals in this poset have a disconnected subinterval and are thus not shellable. Nevertheless, there seem to be large classes of intervals that are shellable and thus have the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres. We prove this to be the case for all intervals of layered permutations that have no disconnected subintervals of rank 3 or more. We also characterize in a simple way those intervals of layered permutations that are disconnected. These results carry over to the poset of generalized subword order when the ordering on the underlying alphabet is a rooted forest. We conjecture that the same applies to intervals of separable permutations, that is, that such an interval is shellable if and only if it has no disconnected subinterval of rank 3 or more. We also present a simplified version of the recursive formula for the Möbius function of decomposable permutations given by Burstein et al.
The Moebius function of separable and decomposable permutations

We give a recursive formula for the Moebius function of an interval $[σ,π]$ in the poset of permutations ordered by pattern containment in the case where $π$ is a decomposable permutation, that is, consists of two blocks where the first one contains all the letters 1, 2, ..., k for some k. This leads to many special cases of more explicit formulas. It also gives rise to a computationally efficient formula for the Moebius function in the case where $σ$ and $π$ are separable permutations. A permutation is separable if it can be generated from the permutation 1 by successive sums and skew sums or, equivalently, if it avoids the patterns 2413 and 3142. A consequence of the formula is that the Moebius function of such an interval $[σ,π]$ is bounded by the number of occurrences of $σ$ as a pattern in $π$. We also show that for any separable permutation $π$ the Moebius function of $(1,π)$ is either 0, 1 or -1.
Shape and pattern containment of separable permutations
Every word has a shape determined by its image under the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. We show that when a word w contains a separable (i.e., 3142- and 2413-avoiding) permutation σ as a pattern, the shape of w contains the shape of σ. As an application, we exhibit lower bounds for the lengths of supersequences of sets containing separable permutations.
The Weak Bruhat Order and Separable Permutations
In this paper we consider the rank generating function of a separable permutation $π$ in the weak Bruhat order on the two intervals $[\text{id}, π]$ and $[π, w_0]$, where $w_0 = n,(n-1),..., 1$. We show a surprising result that the product of these two generating functions is the generating function for the symmetric group with the weak order. We then obtain explicit formulas for the rank generating functions on $[\text{id}, π]$ and $[π, w_0]$, which leads to the rank-symmetry and unimodality of the two graded posets.

We prove that all subclasses of the separable permutations not containing Av(231) or a symmetry of this class have rational generating functions. Our principal tools are partial well-order, atomicity, and the theory of strongly rational permutation classes introduced here for the first time.
