Typical structure of sparse exponential random graph models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider general Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs) where the sufficient statistics are functions of homomorphism counts for a fixed collection of simple graphs $F_k$. Whereas previous work has shown a degeneracy phenomenon in dense ERGMs, we show this can be cured by raising the sufficient statistics to a fractional power. We rigorously establish the naïve mean-field approximation for the partition function of the corresponding Gibbs measures, and in case of "ferromagnetic" models with vanishing edge density show that typical samples resemble a typical Erdős--Rényi graph with a planted clique and/or a planted complete bipartite graph of appropriate sizes. We establish such behavior also for the conditional structure of the Erdős--Rényi graph in the large deviations regime for excess $F_k$-homomorphism counts. These structural results are obtained by combining quantitative large deviation principles, established in previous works, with a novel stability form of a result of [5] on the asymptotic solution for the associated entropic variational problem. A technical ingredient of independent interest is a stability form of Finner's generalized Hölder inequality.
Overfullness of edge-critical graphs with small minimal core degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph. Denote by $n$, $Δ(G)$ and $χ' (G)$ be the order, the maximum degree and the chromatic index of $G$, respectively. We call $G$ \emph{overfull} if $|E(G)|/\lfloor n/2\rfloor > Δ(G)$, and {\it critical} if $χ'(H) < χ'(G)$ for every proper subgraph $H$ of $G$. Clearly, if $G$ is overfull then $χ'(G) = Δ(G)+1$. The \emph{core} of $G$, denoted by $G_Δ$, is the subgraph of $G$ induced by all its maximum degree vertices. We believe that utilizing the core degree condition could be considered as an approach to attacking the overfull conjecture. Along this direction, we in this paper show that for any integer $k\geq 2$, if $G$ is critical with $Δ(G)\geq \frac{2}{3}n+\frac{3k}{2}$ and $δ(G_Δ)\leq k$, then $G$ is overfull.

Coloring in essential annihilating-ideal graphs of commutative rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
The essential annihilating-ideal graph $\mathcal{EG}(R)$ of a commutative unital ring $R$ is a simple graph whose vertices are non-zero ideals of $R$ with non-zero annihilator and there exists an edge between two distinct vertices $I,J$ if and only if $Ann(IJ)$ has a non-zero intersection with any non-zero ideal of $R$. In this paper, we show that $\mathcal{EG}(R)$ is weakly perfect, if $R$ is Noetherian and an explicit formula for the clique number of $\mathcal{EG}(R)$ is given. Moreover, the structures of all rings whose essential annihilating-ideal graphs have chromatic number $2$ are fully determined. Among other results, twin-free clique number and edge chromatic number of $\mathcal{EG}(R)$ are examined.
Depth and Singular Varieties of Exterior Edge Ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Edge ideals of finite simple graphs are well-studied over polynomial rings. In this paper, we initiate the study of edge ideals over exterior algebras, specifically focusing on the depth and singular varieties of such ideals. We prove an upper bound on the depth of the edge ideal associated to a general graph and a more refined bound for bipartite graphs, and we show that both are tight. We also compute the depth of several large families of graphs including cycles, complete multipartite graphs, spider graphs, and Ferrers graphs. Finally, we focus on the effect whiskering a graph has on the depth of the associated edge ideal.
On the power graph of a certain gyrogroup
The power graph $P(G)$ of a group $G$ is a simple graph with the vertex set $G$ such that two distinct vertices $u,v \in G$ are adjacent in $P(G)$ if and only if $u^m = v$ or $v^m = u$, for some $m \in \mathbb{N}$. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of a power graph for gyrogroups. Using this, we investigate the combinatorial properties of a certain gyrogroup, say $G(n)$, of order $2^n$ for $n \geq 3$. In particular, we determine the Hamiltonicity and planarity of the power graph of $G(n)$. Consequently, we calculate distant properties, resolving polynomial, Hosoya and reciprocal Hosoya polynomials, characteristic polynomials, and the spectral radius of the power graph of $G(n)$.

Multicolor Turán numbers II -- a generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi theorem and new results on cliques and odd cycles
In this paper we continue the study of a natural generalization of Turán's forbidden subgraph problem and the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem. Let $ex_F(n,G)$ denote the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a fixed simple graph $F$ that can be placed on an $n$-vertex ground set without forming a subgraph $G$ whose edges are from different $F$-copies. The case when both $F$ and $G$ are triangles essentially gives back the theorem of Ruzsa and Szemerédi. We extend their results to the case when $F$ and $G$ are arbitrary cliques by applying a number theoretic result due to Erdős, Frankl and Rödl. This extension in turn decides the order of magnitude for a large family of graph pairs, which will be subquadratic, but almost quadratic. Since the linear $r$-uniform hypergraph Turán problems to determine $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)$ form a class of the multicolor Turán problem, following the identity $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)=ex_{K_r}(n,G)$, our results determine the linear hypergraph Turán numbers of every graph of girth $3$ and for every $r$ up to a subpolynomial factor. Furthermore, when $G$ is a triangle, we settle the case $F=C_5$ and give bounds for the cases $F=C_{2k+1}$, $k\ge 3$ as well.

Perfectly Matchable Set Polynomials and $h^*$-polynomials for Stable Set Polytopes of Complements of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A subset $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is called a perfectly matchable set of $G$ if the subgraph induced by $S$ contains a perfect matching. The perfectly matchable set polynomial of $G$, first made explicit by Ohsugi and Tsuchiya, is the (ordinary) generating function $p(G; z)$ for the number of perfectly matchable sets of $G$. In this work, we provide explicit recurrences for computing $p(G; z)$ for an arbitrary (simple) graph and use these to compute the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials for certain lattice polytopes. Namely, we show that $p(G; z)$ is the $h^*$-polynomial for certain classes of stable set polytopes, whose vertices correspond to stable sets of $G$.

More on minors of Hermitian (quasi-)Laplacian matrix of the second kind for mixed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A mixed graph $M_{G}$ is the graph obtained from an unoriented simple graph $G$ by giving directions to some edges of $G$, where $G$ is often called the underlying graph of $M_{G}$. In this paper, we introduce two classes of incidence matrices of the second kind of $M_{G}$, and discuss the determinants of these two matrices for rootless mixed trees and unicyclic mixed graphs. Applying these results, we characterize the explicit expressions of various minors for Hermitian (quasi-)Laplacian matrix of the second kind of $M_{G}$. Moreover, we give two sufficient conditions that the absolute values of all the cofactors of Hermitian (quasi-)Laplacian matrix of the second kind are equal to the number of spanning trees of the underlying graph $G$.
Euler dynamic H-trails in edge-colored graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Alternating Euler trails has been extensively studied for its diverse applications, for example, in genetic and molecular biology, social science and channel assignment in wireless networks, as well as for theoretical reasons. We will consider the following edge-coloring. Let $H$ be a graph possibly with loops and $G$ a graph without loops. An $H$-coloring of $G$ is a function $c: E(G) \rightarrow V(H)$. We will say that $G$ is an $H$-colored graph whenever we are taking a fixed $H$-coloring of $G$. A sequence $W=(v_0,e_0^1, \ldots, e_0^{k_0},v_1,e_1^1,\ldots,e_{n-1}^{k_{n-1}},v_n)$ in $G$, where for each $i \in \{0,\ldots, n-1\}$, $k_i \geq 1$ and $e_i^j = v_iv_{i+1}$ is an edge in $G$, for every $j \in \{1,\ldots, k_i \}$, is a dynamic $H$-trail if $W$ does not repeat edges and $c(e_i^{k_i})c(e_{i+1}^1)$ is an edge in $H$, for each $i \in \{0,\ldots,n-2\}$. In particular a dynamic $H$-trail is an alternating Euler trail when $H$ is a complete graph without loops and $k_i=1$, for every $i \in \{1,\ldots,n-1\}$. In this paper, we introduce the concept of dynamic $H$-trail, which arises in a natural way in the modeling of many practical problems, in particular, in theoretical computer science. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of closed Euler dynamic $H$-trail in $H$-colored multigraphs. Also we provide polynomial time algorithms that allows us to convert a cycle in an auxiliary graph, $L_2^H(G)$, in a closed dynamic H-trail in $G$, and vice versa, where $L_2^H(G)$ is a non-colored simple graph obtained from $G$ in a polynomial time.

An improved lower bound of $P(G, L)-P(G,k)$ for $k$-assignments $L$
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory Ser. B, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, $P(G,k)$ be the chromatic polynomial of $G$, and $P(G,L)$ be the number of $L$-colorings of $G$ for any $k$-assignment $L$. In this article, we show that when $k\ge m-1\ge 3$, $P(G,L)-P(G,k)$ is bounded below by $\left ( (k-m+1)k^{n-3}+\frac{(k-m+3)c}{3} k^{n-5}\right )\sum\limits_{uv\in E}|L(u)\setminus L(v)|$, where $c\ge \frac{(m-1)(m-3)}{8}$, and in particular, if $G$ is $K_3$-free, then $c\ge {m-2\choose 2}+2\sqrt m-3$. Consequently, $P(G,L)\ge P(G,k)$ whenever $k\ge m-1$.

Line graphs of simplicial complexes
We consider the line graph of a pure simplicial complex. We prove that, as in the case of line graphs of simple graphs, one can compute the second graded Betti number of the facet ideal of a pure simplicial complex in terms of the combinatorial structure of its line graph. We characterize those pure simplicial complexes whose line graph is a complete (bipartite) graph. We give conditions that line graphs of simplicial complexes should fulfill.

Maximum Independent Set of Cliques and The Generalized Mantel's Theorem
A complete subgraph of any simple graph $G$ on $k$ vertices is called a $k$-\emph{clique} of $G$. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of the value of a $k$-clique ($k>1$) as an extension of the idea of the degree of a given vertex. Then, we obtain the generalized version of handshaking lemma which we call it clique handshaking lemma. The well-known classical result of Mantel states that the maximum number of edges in the class of triangle-free graphs with $n$ vertices is equal to $\frac{n^{2}}{4}$. Our main goal here is to find an extension of the above result for the class of $K_{ω+1}$-free graphs, using the ideas of the value of cliques and the clique handshaking lemma.
Loose edge-connection of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the last years, connection concepts such as rainbow connection and proper connection appeared in graph theory and obtained a lot of attention. In this paper, we investigate the loose edge-connection of graphs. A connected edge-coloured graph $G$ is loose edge-connected if between any two of its vertices there is a path of length one, or a bi-coloured path of length two, or a path of length at least three with at least three colours used on its edges. The minimum number of colours, used in a loose edge-colouring of $G$, is called the loose edge-connection number and denoted $\lec(G)$. We determine the precise value of this parameter for any simple graph $G$ of diameter at least 3. We show that deciding, whether $\lec(G) = 2$ for graphs $G$ of diameter 2, is an NP-complete problem. Furthermore, we characterize all complete bipartite graphs $K_{r,s}$ with $\lec(K_{r,s}) = 2$.

Integral Laplacian graphs with a unique double Laplacian eigenvalue, I

The set $S_{i,n}=\{0,1,2,\ldots,n-1,n\}\setminus\{i\}$, $1\leqslant i\leqslant n$ is called Laplacian realizable if there exists an undirected simple graph whose Laplacian spectrum is $S_{i,n}$. The existence of such graphs was established by S. Fallat et al. in 2005. In this paper, we investigate graphs whose Laplacian spectra have the form $$ S_{\{i,j\}_{n}^{m}}=\{0,1,2,\ldots,m-1,m,m,m+1,\ldots,n-1,n\}\setminus\{i,j\},\qquad 0<i<j\leqslant n, $$ and completely describe those ones with $m=n-1$ and $m=n$. We also show close relations between graphs realizing $S_{i,n}$ and $S_{\{i,j\}_{n}^{m}}$, and discuss the so-called $S_{n,n}$-conjecture and the correspondent conjecture for $S_{\{i,n\}_{n}^{m}}$.

On Graphs, Groups and Geometry
A metric space (X,d) is declared to be natural if (X,d) determines an up to isomorphism unique group structure (X,+) on the set X such that all the group translations and group inversion are isometries. A group is called natural if it emerges like this from a natural metric. A simple graph X is declared to be natural if (X,d) with geodesic metric d is natural. We look here at some examples and some general statements like that the graphical regular representations of a finite group is always a natural graphs or that the direct product on groups or the Shannon product of finite graphs preserves the property of being natural. The semi-direct product of finite natural groups is natural too as they are represented by Zig-Zag products of suitable Cayley graphs. It follows that wreath products preserve natural groups. The Rubik cube for example is natural. Also free products of finitely generated natural groups are natural. A major theme is that non-natural groups often can be upgraded to become natural by extending them to become Coxeter groups. Examples of non-natural groups are cyclic groups whose order is divisible by 4, the quaternion group, the integers, the lamplighter group, the free groups or the group of p-adic integers. The prototype feature is to extend the integers and get the infinite dihedral group, replacing the single generator by two free reflections. We conclude with a short discussion of the hypothesis of using the dihedral group as a physical time in dynamical system theory.

Edge-decompositions of $O(m)$-edge-connected graphs into isomorphic copies of a fixed tree of size $m$
In this paper, we show that every $O(m)$-edge-connected simple graph $G$ of size divisible by $m$ with minimum degree at least $2^{O(m)}$ has an edge-decomposition into isomorphic copies of any given tree $T$ of size $m$. Moreover, the minimum degree condition can be dropped for graphs $G$ with girth greater than the diameter of $T$. These results improve two results due to Bensmail, Harutyunyan, Le, Merker, and Thomassé (2017) and Merker (2017) who gave a factorial upper bound on the necessary edge-connectivity.

A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of $\{p,p+1,q-1,q\}$-orientations in simple graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph and let $p$ and $q$ be two integer-valued functions on $V(G)$ with $p< q$ in which for each $v\in V(G)$, $q(v) \ge \frac{1}{2}d_G(v)$ and $p(v) \ge \frac{1}{2} q(v)-2$. In this note, we show that $G$ has an orientation such that for each vertex $v$, $d^+_G(v)\in\{p(v),p(v)+1,q(v)-1,q(v)\}$ if and only if it has an orientation such that for each vertex $v$, $p(v) \le d^+_G(v)\le q(v)$ where $d^+_G(v)$ denotes the out-degree of $v$ in $G$. From this result, we refine a result due to Addario-Berry, Dalal, and Reed (2008) in bipartite simple graphs on the existence of degree constrained factors.

A vertex-degree-based topological index named as Sombor index of a simple graph G with n vertices was recently introduced by I. Gutman. In this paper, we find Sombor index of m-splitting graph and m-shadow graph. Also, we determine relation between energy and Sombor energy of m-splitting graph and m-shadow graph of k-regular graph.

The existence of planar $4$-connected essentially $6$-edge-connected graphs with no claw-decompositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2006 Bar{á}t and Thomassen conjectured that every planar $4$-edge-connected $4$-regular simple graph of size divisible by three admits a claw-decomposition. Later, Lai (2007) disproved this conjecture by a family of planar graphs with edge-connectivity $4$ which the smallest one contains $24$ vertices. In this note, we first give a smaller counterexample having only $18$ vertices and next construct a family of planar $4$-connected essentially $6$-edge-connected $4$-regular simple graphs of size divisible by three with no claw-decompositions. This result provides the sharpness for two known results which say that every $5$-edge-connected graph of size divisible by three admits a claw-decomposition if it is essentially $6$-edge-connected or planar.
On the homotopy type of the iterated clique graphs of low degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
To any simple graph \(G\), the clique graph operator \(K\) assigns the graph \(K(G)\) which is the intersection graph of the maximal complete subgraphs of \(G\). The iterated clique graphs are defined by \(K^{0}(G)=G\) and \(K^{n}(G)=K(K^{n-1}(G))\) for \(n\geq 1\). We associate topological concepts to graphs by means of the simplicial complex \(\mathrm{Cl}(G)\) of complete subgraphs of \(G\). Hence we say that the graphs \(G_{1}\) and \(G_{2}\) are homotopic whenever \(\mathrm{Cl}(G_{1})\) and \(\mathrm{Cl}(G_{2})\) are. A graph \(G\) such that \(K^{n}(G)\simeq G\) for all \(n\geq1\) is called \emph{\(K\)-homotopy permanent}. A graph is \emph{Helly} if the collection of maximal complete subgraphs of \(G\) has the Helly property. Let \(G\) be a Helly graph. Escalante (1973) proved that \(K(G)\) is Helly, and Prisner (1992) proved that \(G\simeq K(G)\), and so Helly graphs are \(K\)-homotopy permanent. We conjecture that if a graph \(G\) satisfies that \(K^{m}(G)\) is Helly for some \(m\geq1\), then \(G\) is \(K\)-homotopy permanent. If a connected graph has maximum degree at most four and is different from the octahedral graph, we say that it is a \emph{low degree graph}. It was recently proven that all low degree graphs \(G\) satisfy that \(K^{2}(G)\) is Helly. In this paper, we show that all low degree graphs have the homotopy type of a wedge or circumferences, and that they are \(K\)-homotopy permanent.
