The lattice size $\operatorname{ls}_Δ(P)$ of a lattice polygon $P$ with respect to the standard simplex $Δ$ was introduced and studied by Castryck and Cools in the context of simplification of the defining equation of an algebraic curve. Earlier, Schicho provided an "onion skins" algorithm for mapping a lattice polygon $P$ into a small integer multiple of the standard simplex, based on passing successively to the convex hull of the interior lattice points of $P$. Castryck and Cools showed that this algorithm computes the lattice size of $P$.
In this paper we show that for a plane convex body $P$ a reduced basis of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ computes the lattice size. This provides a lattice reduction algorithm for computing the lattice size, which works for any convex body $P\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ and outperforms the "onion skins" algorithm in the case when $P$ is a lattice polygon.

A graphical model encodes conditional independence relations via the Markov properties. For an undirected graph these conditional independence relations can be represented by a simple polytope known as the graph associahedron, which can be constructed as a Minkowski sum of standard simplices. There is an analogous polytope for conditional independence relations coming from a regular Gaussian model, and it can be defined using multiinformation or relative entropy. For directed acyclic graphical models and also for mixed graphical models containing undirected, directed and bidirected edges, we give a construction of this polytope, up to equivalence of normal fans, as a Minkowski sum of matroid polytopes. Finally, we apply this geometric insight to construct a new ordering-based search algorithm for causal inference via directed acyclic graphical models.
A lattice point counting generalisation of the Tutte polynomial

The Tutte polynomial for matroids is not directly applicable to polymatroids. For instance, deletion-contraction properties do not hold. We construct a polynomial for polymatroids which behaves similarly to the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, and in fact contains the same information as the Tutte polynomial when we restrict to matroids. This polynomial is constructed using lattice point counts in the Minkowski sum of the base polytope of a polymatroid and scaled copies of the standard simplex. We also show that, in the matroid case, our polynomial has coefficients of alternating sign, with a combinatorial interpretation closely tied to the Dawson partition.

A symmetric tensor is called copositive if it generates a multivariate form taking nonnegative values over the nonnegative orthant. Copositive tensors have found important applications in polynomial optimization and tensor complementarity problems. In this paper, we consider copositivity detection of tensors both from theoretical and computational points of view. After giving several necessary conditions for copositive tensors, we propose several new criteria for copositive tensors based on the representation of the multivariate form in barycentric coordinates with respect to the standard simplex and simplicial partitions. It is verified that, as the partition gets finer and finer, the concerned conditions eventually capture all strictly copositive tensors. Based on the obtained theoretical results with the help of simplicial partitions, we propose a numerical method to judge whether a tensor is copositive or not. The preliminary numerical results confirm our theoretical findings.

We investigate the problem of completing partial matrices to rank-one matrices in the standard simplex. The motivation for studying this problem comes from statistics: A lack of eligible completion can provide a falsification test for partial observations to come from the independence model. For each pattern of specified entries, we give equations and inequalities which are satisfied if and only if an eligible completion exists. We also describe the set of valid completions, and we optimize over this set.
Which nestohedra are removahedra?

A removahedron is a polytope obtained by deleting inequalities from the facet description of the classical permutahedron. Relevant examples range from the associahedra to the permutahedron itself, which raises the natural question to characterize which nestohedra can be realized as removahedra. In this note, we show that the nested complex of any connected building set closed under intersection can be realized as a removahedron. We present two different complementary proofs: one based on the building trees and the nested fan, and the other based on Minkowski sums of dilated faces of the standard simplex. In general, this closure condition is sufficient but not necessary to obtain removahedra. However, we show that it is also necessary to obtain removahedra from graphical building sets, and that it is equivalent to the corresponding graph being chordful (i.e. any cycle induces a clique).
On hypergraph cliques and polynomial programming
Motzkin and Straus established a close connection between the maximum clique problem and a solution (namely graph-Lagrangians) to the maximum value of a class of homogeneous quadratic multilinear functions over the standard simplex of the Euclidean space in 1965. This connection provides a new proof of Turán's theorem. Recently, an extension of Motzkin-Straus theorem was proved for non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1 or 2 vertices in \cite{PPTZ}. It is interesting if similar results hold for other non-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we give some connection between polynomial programming and the clique of non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1, or 2, and more vertices. Specifically, we obtain some Motzkin-Straus type results in terms of the graph-Lagrangian of non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1, or 2, and more vertices.
On Motzkin-Straus Type of Results and Frankl-Füredi Conjecture for Hypergraphs
A remarkable connection between the order of a maximum clique and the Graph-Lagrangian of a graph was established by Motzkin and Straus in 1965. This connection and its extension were useful in both combinatorics and optimization. Since then, Graph-Lagrangian has been a useful tool in extremal combinatorics. In this paper, we give a parametrized Graph-Lagrangian for non-uniform hypergraphs and provide several Motzkin-Straus type results for nonuniform hypergraphs which generalize results from [1] and [2]. Another part of the paper concerns a long-standing conjecture of Frankl-Füredi on Graph-Lagrangians of hypergraphs. We show the connection between the Graph-Lagrangian of $\{1, r_1, r_2, \cdots, r_l\}$-hypergraphs and $\{ r_1, r_2, \cdots, r_l\}$-hypergraphs. Some of our results provide solutions to the maximum value of a class of polynomial functions over the standard simplex of the Euclidean space.

We study the tropicalization of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices over the ordered field of real Puiseux series. The tropical PSD matrices form the normal cone of the Newton polytope of the symmetric determinant at the vertex corresponding to the product of diagonal entries. We find generators and defining inequalities of the cone. The PSD tropical quadratic forms are those that induce the trivial subdivision on the standard simplex dilated by two. We also show that the tropical PSD cone is the tropical convex hull of the set of symmetric matrices of tropical rank one and that every tropical PSD matrix can be factored as a tropical product of a matrix and its transpose.

The \emph{simplicial rook graph} SR(d,n) is the graph whose vertices are the lattice points in the $n$th dilate of the standard simplex in $\mathbb{R}^d$, with two vertices adjacent if they differ in exactly two coordinates. We prove that the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of SR(3,n) have integral spectrum for every $n$. The proof proceeds by calculating an explicit eigenbasis. We conjecture that SR(d,n) is integral for all $d$ and $n$, and present evidence in support of this conjecture. For $n<\binom{d}{2}$, the evidence indicates that the smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix is $-n$, and that the corresponding eigenspace has dimension given by the Mahonian numbers, which enumerate permutations by number of inversions.

Realisations of associahedra with linearly non-isomorphic normal fans can be obtained by alteration of the right-hand sides of the facet-defining inequalities from a classical permutahedron. These polytopes can be expressed as Minkowski sums and differences of dilated faces of a standard simplex as described by Ardila, Benedetti & Doker (2010). The coefficients $y_I$ of such a Minkowski decomposition can be computed by Möbius inversion if tight right-hand sides $z_I$ are known not just for the facet-defining inequalities of the associahedron but also for all inequalities of the permutahedron that are redundant for the associahedron.
We show for certain families of these associahedra: (a) how to compute tight values $z_I$ for the redundant inequalities from the values $z_I$ for the facet-defining inequalities; (b) the computation of the values $y_I$ of Ardila, Benedetti & Doker can be significantly simplified and at most four values $z_{a(I)}$, $z_{b(I)}$, $z_{c(I)}$ and $z_{d(I)}$ are needed to compute $y_I$; (c) the four indices $a(I)$, $b(I)$, $c(I)$ and $d(I)$ are determined by the geometry of the normal fan of the associahedron and are described combinatorially; (d) a combinatorial interpretation of the values $y_I$ using a labeled $n$-gon. This last result is inspired from similar interpretations for vertex coordinates originally described originally by J.-L. Loday and well-known interpretations for the $z_I$-values of facet-defining inequalities.
The flag polynomial of the Minkowski sum of simplices

For a polytope we define the {\em flag polynomial}, a polynomial in commuting variables related to the well-known flag vector and describe how to express the the flag polynomial of the Minkowski sum of $k$ standard simplices in a direct and canonical way in terms of the {\em $k$-th master polytope} $P(k)$ where $k\in\nats$. The flag polynomial facilitates many direct computations. To demonstrate this we provide two examples; we first derive a formula for the $f$-polynomial and the maximum number of $d$-dimensional faces of the Minkowski sum of two simplices. We then compute the maximum discrepancy between the number of $(0,d)$-chains of faces of a Minkowski sum of two simplices and the number of such chains of faces of a simple polytope of the same dimension and on the same number of vertices.

Let $g_1, ..., g_k$ be tropical polynomials in $n$ variables with Newton polytopes $P_1, ..., P_k$. We study combinatorial questions on the intersection of the tropical hypersurfaces defined by $g_1, ..., g_k$, such as the $f$-vector, the number of unbounded faces and (in case of a curve) the genus. Our point of departure is Vigeland's work who considered the special case $k=n-1$ and where all Newton polytopes are standard simplices. We generalize these results to arbitrary $k$ and arbitrary Newton polytopes $P_1, ..., P_k$. This provides new formulas for the number of faces and the genus in terms of mixed volumes. By establishing some aspects of a mixed version of Ehrhart theory we show that the genus of a tropical intersection curve equals the genus of a toric intersection curve corresponding to the same Newton polytopes.

We are interested in representations and characterizations of lattice polynomial functions f:L^n -> L, where L is a given bounded distributive lattice. In companion papers [arXiv 0901.4888, arXiv 0808.2619], we investigated certain representations and provided various characterizations of these functions both as solutions of certain functional equations and in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions. In the present paper, we investigate these representations and characterizations in the special case when L is a chain, i.e., a totally ordered lattice. More precisely, we discuss representations of lattice polynomial functions given in terms of standard simplices and we present new axiomatizations of these functions by relaxing some of the conditions given in [arXiv 0901.4888, arXiv 0808.2619] and by considering further conditions, namely comonotonic minitivity and maxitivity.

We show that the family of standard simplices and the family of Stasheff polytopes are dual to each other in the following sense.
The chain modules of the standard simplices, resp. the Stasheff polytopes, assemble to give an operad. We show that these operads are dual of each other in the operadic sense. The main result of this paper is to show that they are both Koszul operads. As a consequence the generating series of the standard simplices and the generating series of the Stasheff polytopes are inverse to each other. The two operads give rise to new types of algebras with 3 generating operations, 11 relations, respectively 7 relations, that we call {\it associative trialgebras} and {\it dendriform trialgebras} respectively. The free dendriform trialgebra, which is based on planar trees, has an interesting Hopf algebra structure, which will be dealt with in another paper.
Similarly the family of cubes gives rise to an operad which happens to be self-dual for Koszul duality.
