A short proof of a lower bound for Turán numbers
Let $F$ be a strictly balanced $r$-uniform hypergraph with $e>2$ edges and $r$-density $m$. We give a new short proof of the fact that the Turán number $\ex(n, F)$ is greater than $c\, n^{r-1/m} (\log n)^{1/(e-1)}$ where $c$ depends only on $F$. The previous proof of this for $r=2$ by Bohman and Keevash and for $r \ge 3$ by Bennett and Bohman used a random greedy process and its analysis using the differential equations method. Our proof uses elementary probabilistic arguments together with a (nontrivial) classical result about independent sets in hypergraphs.

Small subgraphs and their extensions in a random distance graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
In previous papers, threshold probabilities for the properties of a random distance graph to contain strictly balanced graphs were found. We extend this result to arbitrary graphs and prove that the number of copies of a strictly balanced graph has asymptotically Poisson distribution at the threshold.

Poisson approximation of counts of subgraphs in random intersection graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Random intersection graphs are characterized by three parameters: $n$, $m$ and $p$, where $n$ is the number of vertices, $m$ is the number of objects, and $p$ is the probability that a given object is associated with a given vertex. Two vertices in a random intersection graph are adjacent if and only if they have an associated object in common. When $m=\lfloor n^α\rfloor$ for constant $α$, we provide a condition, called {\em strictly $α$-balanced}, for the Poisson convergence of the number of induced copies of a fixed subgraph.

The probability of nonexistence of a subgraph in a moderately sparse random graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a general procedure that finds recursions for statistics counting isomorphic copies of a graph $G_0$ in the common random graph models ${\cal G}(n,m)$ and ${\cal G}(n,p)$. Our results apply when the average degrees of the random graphs are below the threshold at which each edge is included in a copy of $G_0$. This extends an argument given earlier by the second author for $G_0=K_3$ with a more restricted range of average degree. For all strictly balanced subgraphs $G_0$, our results gives much information on the distribution of the number of copies of $G_0$ that are not in large "clusters" of copies. The probability that a random graph in ${\cal G}(n,p)$ has no copies of $G_0$ is shown to be given asymptotically by the exponential of a power series in $n$ and $p$, over a fairly wide range of $p$. A corresponding result is also given for ${\cal G}(n,m)$, which gives an asymptotic formula for the number of graphs with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges and no copies of $G_0$, for the applicable range of $m$. An example is given, computing the asymptotic probability that a random graph has no triangles for $p=o(n^{-7/11})$ in ${\cal G}(n,p)$ and for $m=o(n^{15/11})$ in ${\cal G}(n,m)$, extending results of the second author.

Zero-One Law for random uniform hypergraphs
In this work limit probabilities of first-order properties of the random $s$-uniform hypergraph in the binomial model $G^{s}(n,p)$ are studied. We give a complete discription of all positive $α$ such that $G^{s}(n,n^{-α})$ obeys Zero-One Law. Moreover, for any rational $ρ\geq 1/(s-1)$ we prove the existence of a strictly balanced $s$-uniform hypergraph with the density $ρ$.

The distribution of minimum-weight cliques and other subgraphs in graphs with random edge weights
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine, asymptotically in $n$, the distribution and mean of the weight of a minimum-weight $k$-clique (or any strictly balanced graph $H$) in a complete graph $K_n$ whose edge weights are independent random values drawn from the uniform distribution or other continuous distributions. For the clique, we also provide explicit (non-asymptotic) bounds on the distribution's CDF in a form obtained directly from the Stein-Chen method, and in a looser but simpler form. The direct form extends to other subgraphs and other edge-weight distributions. We illustrate the clique results for various values of $k$ and $n$. The results may be applied to evaluate whether an observed minimum-weight copy of a graph $H$ in a network provides statistical evidence that the network's edge weights are not independently distributed but have some structure.

Sharp thresholds for Ramsey properties of strictly balanced nearly bipartite graphs
Published in Random Structures Algorithms 52 (2018), no. 1, 3-40 • View PublicationBIB
For a given graph $F$ we consider the family of (finite) graphs $G$ with the Ramsey property for $F$, that is the set of such graphs $G$ with the property that every two-colouring of the edges of $G$ yields a monochromatic copy of $F$. For $F$ being a triangle Friedgut, Rödl, Ruciński, and Tetali (2004) established the sharp threshold for the Ramsey property in random graphs. We obtained a simpler proof of this result which extends to a more general class of graphs $F$ including all cycles. The proof is based on Friedgut's criteria (1999) for sharp thresholds, and on the recently developed container method for independent sets in hypergraphs by Saxton and Thomason, and Balogh, Morris and Samotij. The proof builds on some recent work of Friedgut et al. who established a similar result for van der Waerden's theorem.

On the random greedy F-free hypergraph process
Let $F$ be a strictly $k$-balanced $k$-uniform hypergraph with $e(F)\geq |F|-k+1$ and maximum co-degree at least two. The random greedy $F$-free process constructs a maximal $F$-free hypergraph as follows. Consider a random ordering of the hyperedges of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^k$ on $n$ vertices. Start with the empty hypergraph on $n$ vertices. Successively consider the hyperedges $e$ of $K_n^k$ in the given ordering, and add $e$ to the existing hypergraph provided that $e$ does not create a copy of $F$. We show that asymptotically almost surely this process terminates at a hypergraph with $\tilde{O}(n^{k-(|F|-k)/(e(F)-1)})$ hyperedges. This is best possible up to logarithmic factors.

Dense subgraphs in the H-free process
Published in Discrete Mathematics 31 (2011), 2703-2707 • View PublicationBIB
The H-free process starts with the empty graph on n vertices and adds edges chosen uniformly at random, one at a time, subject to the condition that no copy of H is created, where H is some fixed graph. When H is strictly 2-balanced, we show that for some c,d>0, with high probability as $n \to \infty$, the final graph of the H-free process contains no subgraphs F on $v_F \leq n^{d}$ vertices with maximum density $\max_{J \subseteq F}\{e_J/v_J\} \geq c$. This extends and generalizes results of Gerke and Makai for the C_3-free process.

The early evolution of the H-free process
Published • View PublicationBIB
The H-free process, for some fixed graph H, is the random graph process defined by starting with an empty graph on n vertices and then adding edges one at a time, chosen uniformly at random subject to the constraint that no H subgraph is formed. Let G be the random maximal H-free graph obtained at the end of the process. When H is strictly 2-balanced, we show that for some c>0, with high probability as $n \to \infty$, the minimum degree in G is at least $cn^{1-(v_H-2)/(e_H-1)}(\log n)^{1/(e_H-1)}$. This gives new lower bounds for the Turán numbers of certain bipartite graphs, such as the complete bipartite graphs $K_{r,r}$ with $r \ge 5$. When H is a complete graph $K_s$ with $s \ge 5$ we show that for some C>0, with high probability the independence number of G is at most $Cn^{2/(s+1)}(\log n)^{1-1/(e_H-1)}$. This gives new lower bounds for Ramsey numbers R(s,t) for fixed $s \ge 5$ and t large. We also obtain new bounds for the independence number of G for other graphs H, including the case when H is a cycle. Our proofs use the differential equations method for random graph processes to analyse the evolution of the process, and give further information about the structure of the graphs obtained, including asymptotic formulae for a broad class of subgraph extension variables.

Lower Bounds for the Size of Random Maximal H-Free Graphs
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 16 (2009), no. 1, Research Paper 4, 26 pp • View PublicationBIB
We consider the next greedy randomized process for generating maximal H-free graphs: Given a fixed graph H and an integer n, start by taking a uniformly random permutation of the edges of the complete n-vertex graph. Then, construct an n-vertex graph, M_n(H), iteratively as follows. Traverse the permuted edges of the complete n-vertex graph and add each one to the (initially empty) evolving graph M_n(H) - unless its addition creates a copy of H. The result of this process is a maximal H-free graph M_n(H). The basic question we are concerned with in here is: What is the expected number of edges in M_n(H)? We give new lower bounds on the expected number of edges in M_n(H) for the case where H is a regular, strictly 2-balanced graph. In particular, we obtain new lower bounds for Turan numbers of complete balanced bipartite graphs K_{r,r}, for every fixed r > 4. This improves an old lower bound of Erdos and Spencer.

Factors in random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ be a fixed graph on $v$ vertices. For an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $n$ divisible by $v$, an $H$-{\em factor} of $G$ is a collection of $n/v$ copies of $H$ whose vertex sets partition $V(G)$. In this paper we consider the threshold $th_{H} (n)$ of the property that an Erdős-Rényi random graph (on $n$ points) contains an $H$-factor. Our results determine $th_{H} (n)$ for all strictly balanced $H$. The method here extends with no difficulty to hypergraphs. As a corollary, we obtain the threshold for a perfect matching in random $k$-uniform hypergraph, solving the well-known "Shamir's problem."
