Extrema of graph eigenvalues

In 1993 Hong asked what are the best bounds on the $k$'th largest eigenvalue $λ_{k}(G)$ of a graph $G$ of order $n$. This challenging question has never been tackled for any $2<k<n$. In the present paper tight bounds are obtained for all $k>2,$ and even tighter bounds are obtained for the $k$'th largest singular value $λ_{k}^{\ast}(G).$
Some of these bounds are based on Taylor's strongly regular graphs, and other on a method of Kharaghani for constructing Hadamard matrices. The same kind of constructions are applied to other open problems, like Nordhaus-Gaddum problems of the kind: How large can $λ_{k}(G)+λ_{k}(\bar{G})$ be$?$
These constructions are successful also in another open question: How large can the Ky Fan norm $λ_{1}^{\ast}(G)+...+λ_{k}^{\ast }(G)$ be $?$ Ky Fan norms of graphs generalize the concept of graph energy, so this question generalizes the problem for maximum energy graphs.
In the final section, several results and problems are restated for $(-1,1)$-matrices, which seem to provide a more natural ground for such research than graphs.
Many of the results in the paper are paired with open questions and problems for further study.

We construct and study a new near octagon of order $(2,10)$ which has its full automorphism group isomorphic to the group $\mathrm{G}_2(4){:}2$ and which contains $416$ copies of the Hall-Janko near octagon as full subgeometries. Using this near octagon and its substructures we give geometric constructions of the $\mathrm{G}_2(4)$-graph and the Suzuki graph, both of which are strongly regular graphs contained in the Suzuki tower. As a subgeometry of this octagon we have discovered another new near octagon, whose order is $(2,4)$.

In this paper, we show how certain three-class association schemes and orthogonal arrays give rise to partial geometric designs. We also investigate the connections between partial geometric designs and certain regular graphs having three or four distinct eigenvalues, three-class association schemes, orthogonal arrays of strength two and particular linear codes. We give various characterizations of these graphs, association schemes and orthogonal arrays in terms of partial geometric designs. We also give a list of infinite families of directed strongly regular graphs arising from the partial geometric designs obtained in this paper.
Switched symplectic graphs and their 2-ranks

We apply Godsil-McKay switching to the symplectic graphs over $\mathbb{F}_2$ with at least 63 vertices and prove that the 2-rank of (the adjacency matrix of) the graph increases after switching. This shows that the switched graph is a new strongly regular graph with parameters $(2^{2ν}\!-1, 2^{2ν-1}, 2^{2ν-2},2^{2ν-2})$ and 2-rank $2ν+2$ when $ν\geq 3$. For the symplectic graph on $63$ vertices we investigate repeated switching by computer and find many new strongly regular graphs with the above parameters for $ν=3$ with various 2-ranks. Using these results and a recursive construction method for the symplectic graph from Hadamard matrices, we obtain several graphs with the above parameters, but different 2-ranks for every $ν\geq 3$.
Strongly Regular Graphs as Laplacian Extremal Graphs
The Laplacian spread of a graph is the difference between the largest eigenvalue and the second-smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of the graph. We find that the class of strongly regular graphs attains the maximum of largest eigenvalues, the minimum of second-smallest eigenvalues of Laplacian matrices and hence the maximum of Laplacian spreads among all simple connected graphs of fixed order, minimum degree, maximum degree, minimum size of common neighbors of two adjacent vertices and minimum size of common neighbors of two nonadjacent vertices. Some other extremal graphs are also provided.

We consider the problem of computing identifying codes of graphs and its fractional relaxation. The ratio between the size of optimal integer and fractional solutions is between 1 and 2 ln(|V|)+1 where V is the set of vertices of the graph. We focus on vertex-transitive graphs for which we can compute the exact fractional solution. There are known examples of vertex-transitive graphs that reach both bounds. We exhibit infinite families of vertex-transitive graphs with integer and fractional identifying codes of order |V|^a with a in {1/4,1/3,2/5}. These families are generalized quadrangles (strongly regular graphs based on finite geometries). They also provide examples for metric dimension of graphs.
Automorphisms of strongly regular graphs
In this article we generalize a theorem of Benson for generalized quadrangles to strongly regular graphs and directed strongly regular graphs. The main result provides numerical restrictions on the number of fixed vertices and the number of vertices mapped to adjacent vertices under an automorphism. It is explained how these results can be used when studying partial difference sets in Abelian groups and projective two-weight sets. The underlying ideas are linear algebraic in nature.
Chip-firing may be much faster than you think
A new bound (Theorem \ref{thm:main}) for the duration of the chip-firing game with $N$ chips on a $n$-vertex graph is obtained, by a careful analysis of the pseudo-inverse of the discrete Laplacian matrix of the graph. This new bound is expressed in terms of the entries of the pseudo-inverse.
It is shown (Section 5) to be always better than the classic bound due to Bj{ö}rner, Lovász and Shor. In some cases the improvement is dramatic.
For instance: for strongly regular graphs the classic and the new bounds reduce to $O(nN)$ and $O(n+N)$, respectively. For dense regular graphs - $d=(\frac{1}{2}+ε)n$ - the classic and the new bounds reduce to $O(N)$ and $O(n)$, respectively.
This is a snapshot of a work in progress, so further results in this vein are in the works.
Normally Regular Digraphs
A normally regular digraph with parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)$ is a directed graph on $v$ vertices whose adjacency matrix $A$ satisfies the equation $AA^t=k I+λ(A+A^t)+μ(J-I-A-A^t)$. This means that every vertex has out-degree $k$, a pair of non-adjacent vertices have $μ$ common out-neighbours, a pair of vertices connected by an edge in one direction have $λ$ common out-neighbours and a pair of vertices connected by edges in both directions have $2λ-μ$ common out-neighbours. We often assume that two vertices can not be connected in both directions.
We prove that the adjacency matrix of a normally regular digraph is normal. A connected $k$-regular digraph with normal adjacency matrix is a normally regular digraph if and only if all eigenvalues other than $k$ are on one circle in the complex plane. We prove several non-existence results, structural characterizations, and constructions of normally regular digraphs. In many cases these graphs are Cayley graphs of abelian groups and the construction is then based on a generalization of difference sets.
We also show connections to other combinatorial objects: strongly regular graphs, symmetric 2-designs and association schemes.

We prove the non-existence of strongly regular graph with parameters $(76,30,8,14)$. We use Euclidean representation of a strongly regular graph together with a new lower bound on the number of 4-cliques to derive strong structural properties of the graph, and then use these properties to show that the graph cannot exist.
Quadratic Zero-Difference Balanced Functions, APN Functions and Strongly Regular Graphs

Let $F$ be a function from $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ to itself and $δ$ a positive integer. $F$ is called zero-difference $δ$-balanced if the equation $F(x+a)-F(x)=0$ has exactly $δ$ solutions for all non-zero $a\in\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$. As a particular case, all known quadratic planar functions are zero-difference 1-balanced; and some quadratic APN functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ are zero-difference 2-balanced. In this paper, we study the relationship between this notion and differential uniformity; we show that all quadratic zero-difference $δ$-balanced functions are differentially $δ$-uniform and we investigate in particular such functions with the form $F=G(x^d)$, where $\gcd(d,p^n-1)=δ+1$ and where the restriction of $G$ to the set of all non-zero $(δ+1)$-th powers in $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ is an injection. We introduce new families of zero-difference $p^t$-balanced functions. More interestingly, we show that the image set of such functions is a regular partial difference set, and hence yields strongly regular graphs; this generalizes the constructions of strongly regular graphs using planar functions by Weng et al. Using recently discovered quadratic APN functions on $\mathbb{F}_{2^8}$, we obtain $15$ new $(256, 85, 24, 30)$ negative Latin square type strongly regular graphs.
Construction of Directed Strongly Regular Graphs as Generalized Cayley Graphs
Directed strongly regular graphs were introduced by Duval in 1998 as one of the possible generalization of classical strongly regular graphs to the directed case. Duval also provided several construction methods for directed strongly regular graphs. In this paper, an infinite family of directed strongly regular graphs is constructed, as generalized Cayley graphs of cyclic groups.
New strongly regular graphs derived from the G2(4) graph
We consider simple loopless finite undirected graphs. Such a graph is called strongly regular with parameter set (v,k,l,m), for short a srg(v,k,l,m), iff it has exactly v vertices, each of them has exactly k neighbours, and the number of common neighbours of any two different vertices is l if they are neighbours and m otherwise.
The G2(4) graph is a well-known srg(416,100,36,20). In this article, we explicitly construct it and a certain subgraph E induced by 320 vertices in the same way as in an older article by this author. We discover some interesting properties of E and derive five strongly regular graphs from it:
A srg(256,60,20,12) F which is a subgraph induced by 256 vertices and four srg(336,80,28,16) H, H_1, H_2 and H_3 which do have E as induced subgraph.
The latter three graphs are new in version 4 of this article and seem to have been completely unknown as H was before version 1 appeared. The graph F is isomorphic to objects described as unions of 16 16-cocliques in a description of subgraphs of the G2(4) graph by Andries E. Brouwer; but the strong regularity has been unnoticed before version 1 of this article.
Several propositions in this article have been checked by executing the additionally (in the source package) provided program G24DGS2 and the program Dreadnaut from the popular graph theoretic software nauty (by Brendan McKay and Adolfo Piperno).
Large connected strongly regular graphs are Hamiltonian
We prove that every connected strongly regular graph on sufficiently many vertices is Hamiltonian. We prove this by showing that, apart from three families, connected strongly regular graphs are (highly) pseudo-random. Our results suggest a number of new questions and conjectures.

We report about the results of the application of modern computer algebra tools for construction of directed strongly regular graphs. The suggested techniques are based on the investigation of non-commutative association schemes and Cayley graphs over non-Abelian groups. We demonstrate examples of directed strongly regular graphs for 28 different parameter sets, for which the existence of a corresponding digraph has not been known before.
Complex Two-Graphs via Equiangular Tight Frames
In `A survey of two-graphs' \cite{Sei}, J.J. Seidel lays out the connections between simple graphs, two-graphs, equiangular lines and strongly regular graph. It is well known that there is a one-to-one correspondence between regular two-graphs and equiangular tight frames. This article gives a generalization of two-graphs for which these connections can be mimicked using roots of unity beyond $\pm 1$.
Linear programming bounds for regular graphs

Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel (1977) used the linear programming method in order to find bounds for the size of spherical codes endowed with prescribed inner products between distinct points in the code. In this paper, we develop the linear programming method to obtain bounds for the number of vertices of connected regular graphs endowed with given distinct eigenvalues. This method is proved by some "dual" technique of the spherical case, motivated from the theory of association scheme. As an application of this bound, we prove that a connected $k$-regular graph satisfying $g>2d-1$ has the minimum second-largest eigenvalue of all $k$-regular graphs of the same size, where $d$ is the number of distinct non-trivial eigenvalues, and $g$ is the girth. The known graphs satisfying $g>2d-1$ are Moore graphs, incidence graphs of regular generalized polygons of order $(s,s)$, triangle-free strongly regular graphs, and the odd graph of degree $4$.

We consider imprimitive association schemes of class four which are two-fold covers of strongly regular graphs with spreads. It will be shown that a two-fold cover of a strongly regular graph with a spread provides a five class fission scheme of the imprimitive scheme of class four.

In this paper we unify several existing regularity conditions for graphs, including strong regularity, $k$-isoregularity, and the $t$-vertex condition. We develop an algebraic composition/decomposition theory of regularity conditions. Using our theoretical results we show that a family of non rank 3 graphs known to satisfy the $7$-vertex condition fulfills an even stronger condition, $(3,7)$-regularity (the notion is defined in the text). Derived from this family we obtain a new infinite family of non rank $3$ strongly regular graphs satisfying the $6$-vertex condition. This strengthens and generalizes previous results by Reichard.
The Geometry of Homogeneous Two-Weight Codes
The results of [1,2] on linear homogeneous two-weight codes over finite Frobenius rings are exended in two ways: It is shown that certain non-projective two-weight codes give rise to strongly regular graphs in the way described in [1,2]. Secondly, these codes are used to define a dual two-weight code and strongly regular graph similar to the classical case of projective linear two-weight codes over finite fields [3].
