Transport of patterns by Burge transpose
Published • View PublicationBIB
We take the first steps in developing a theory of transport of patterns from Fishburn permutations to (modified) ascent sequences. Given a set of pattern avoiding Fishburn permutations, we provide an explicit construction for the basis of the corresponding set of modified ascent sequences. Our approach is in fact more general and can transport patterns between permutations and equivalence classes of so called Cayley permutations. This transport of patterns relies on a simple operation we call the Burge transpose. It operates on certain biwords called Burge words. Moreover, using mesh patterns on Cayley permutations, we present an alternative view of the transport of patterns as a Wilf-equivalence between subsets of Cayley permutations. We also highlight a connection with primitive ascent sequences.

In this paper, we enumerate Dumont permutations of the fourth kind avoiding or containing certain permutations of length 4. We also conjecture a Wilf-equivalence of two 4-letter patterns on Dumont permutations of the first kind.

Enumeration of Permutation Classes and Weighted Labelled Independent Sets
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 22 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2019, Special issues (March 29, 2021) dmtcs:5995 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the staircase encoding of permutations, which maps a permutation to a staircase grid with cells filled with permutations. We consider many cases, where restricted to a permutation class, the staircase encoding becomes a bijection to its image. We describe the image of those restrictions using independent sets of graphs weighted with permutations. We derive the generating function for the independent sets and then for their weighted counterparts. The bijections we establish provide the enumeration of permutation classes. We use our results to uncover some unbalanced Wilf-equivalences of permutation classes and outline how to do random sampling in the permutation classes. In particular, we cover the classes $\mathrm{Av}(2314,3124)$, $\mathrm{Av}(2413,3142)$, $\mathrm{Av}(2413,3124)$, $\mathrm{Av}(2413,2134)$ and $\mathrm{Av}(2314,2143)$, as well as many subclasses.

Wilf collapse in permutation classes
For a hereditary permutation class $\mathcal{C}$, we say that two permutations $π$ and $σ$ of $\mathcal{C}$ are Wilf-equivalent in $\mathcal{C}$, if $\mathcal{C}$ has the same number of permutations avoiding $π$ as those avoiding $σ$. We say that a permutation class $\mathcal{C}$ exhibits a Wilf collapse if the number of permutations of size $n$ in $\mathcal{C}$ is asymptotically larger than the number of Wilf-equivalence classes formed by these permutations. In this paper, we show that Wilf collapse is a surprisingly common phenomenon. Among other results, we show that Wilf collapse occurs in any permutation class with unbounded growth and finitely many sum-indecomposable permutations. Our proofs are based on encoding the elements of a permutation class $\mathcal{C}$ as words, and analyzing the structure of a random permutation in $\mathcal{C}$ using this representation.

Consecutive patterns in inversion sequences II: avoiding patterns of relations
Inversion sequences are integer sequences $e=e_{1}e_{2}\dots e_{n}$ such that $0\leq e_{i}<i$ for each $i$. The study of patterns in inversion sequences was initiated by Corteel--Martinez--Savage--Weselcouch and Mansour--Shattuck in the classical (non-consecutive) case, and later by Auli--Elizalde in the consecutive case, where the entries of a pattern are required to occur in adjacent positions. In this paper we continue this investigation by considering {\em consecutive patterns of relations}, in analogy to the work of Martinez--Savage in the classical case. Specifically, given two binary relations $R_{1},R_2\in\{\leq,\geq,<,>,=,\neq\}$, we study inversion sequences $e$ with no subindex $i$ such that $e_{i}R_{1}e_{i+1}R_{2}e_{i+2}$. By enumerating such inversion sequences according to their length, we obtain well-known quantities such as Catalan numbers, Fibonacci numbers and central polynomial numbers, relating inversion sequences to other combinatorial structures. We also classify consecutive patterns of relations into Wilf equivalence classes, according to the number of inversion sequences avoiding them, and into more restrictive classes that consider the positions of the occurrences of the patterns. As a byproduct of our techniques, we obtain a simple bijective proof of a result of Baxter--Shattuck and Kasraoui about Wilf-equivalence of vincular patterns, and we prove a conjecture of Martinez and Savage, as well as related enumeration formulas for inversion sequences satisfying certain unimodality conditions.

On partially ordered patterns of length 4 and 5 in permutations
Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the notion of classical patterns studied widely in the literature in the context of permutations, words, compositions and partitions. In an occurrence of a POP, the relative order of some of the elements is not important. Thus, any POP of length $k$ is defined by a partially ordered set on $k$ elements, and classical patterns correspond to $k$-element chains. The notion of a POP provides a convenient language to deal with larger sets of permutation patterns. This paper contributes to a long line of research on classical permutation patterns of length 4 and 5, and beyond, by conducting a systematic search of connections between sequences in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) and permutations avoiding POPs of length 4 and 5. As the result, we (i) obtain 13 new enumerative results for classical patterns of length 4 and 5, and a number of results for patterns of arbitrary length, (ii) collect under one roof many sporadic results in the literature related to avoidance of patterns of length 4 and 5, and (iii) conjecture 6 connections to the OEIS. Among the most intriguing bijective questions we state, 7 are related to explaining Wilf-equivalence of various sets of patterns, e.g.\ 5 or 8 patterns of length 4, and 2 or 6 patterns of length~5.

Restricted permutations refined by number of crossings and nestings
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 343 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Let $st=\{st_1,\ldots,st_k\}$ be a set of $k$ statistics on permutations with $k\geq 1$. We say that two given subset of permutations $T$ and $T'$ are $st$-Wilf-equivalent if the joint distributions of all statistics in $st$ over the sets of $T$-avoiding permutations $S_n(T)$ and $T'$-avoiding permutations $S_n(T')$ are the same. The main purpose of this paper is the (cr,nes)-Wilf-equivalence classes for all single patterns in $S_3$, where cr and nes denote respectively the statistics number of crossings and nestings. One of the main tools that we use is the bijection $Θ:S_n(321)\rightarrow S_n(132)$ which was originally exhibited by Elizalde and Pak in \cite{ElizP}. They proved that the bijection $Θ$ preserves the number of fixed points and excedances. Since the given formulation of $Θ$ is not direct, we show that it can be defined directly by a recursive formula. Then, we prove that it also preserves the number of crossings. Due to the fact that the sets of non-nesting permutations and 321-avoiding permutations are the same, these properties of the bijection $Θ$ leads to an unexpected result related to the q,p-Catalan numbers of Randrianarivony defined in \cite{ARandr}.

Stankova and West showed that for any non-negative integer $s$ and any permutation $γ$ of $\{4,5,\dots,s+3\}$ there are as many permutations that avoid $231γ$ as there are that avoid $312γ$. We extend this result to the setting of words.

The 26 Wilf-equivalence classes of length five quasi-consecutive patterns
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 20 no. 2, Combinatorics (October 24, 2018) dmtcs:4030 • View PublicationBIB
We present two families of Wilf-equivalences for consecutive and quasi-consecutive vincular patterns. These give new proofs of the classification of consecutive patterns of length $4$ and $5$. We then prove additional equivalences to explicitly classify all quasi-consecutive patterns of length $5$ into 26 Wilf-equivalence classes.

Rooted forests that avoid sets of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that an unordered rooted labeled forest avoids the pattern $π\in\mathcal{S}_n$ if the sequence obtained from the labels along the path from the root to any vertex does not contain a subsequence that is in the same relative order as $π$. We enumerate several classes of forests that avoid certain sets of permutations, including the set of unimodal forests, via bijections with set partitions with certain properties. We also define and investigate an analog of Wilf-equivalence for forests.

Enumeration of cyclic permutations in vector grid classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A grid class consists of permutations whose pictorial depiction can be partitioned into increasing and decreasing parts as determined by a given matrix. In this paper, we introduce a method for enumerating cyclic permutations in vector grid classes by establishing a bijective relationship with certain necklaces. We use this method to complete the enumeration of cyclic permutations in the length 3 vector grid classes. In addition, we define an analog of Wilf-equivalence between these sets. We conclude by discussing cyclic permutations in alternating grid classes.

Enumerations of Permutations Simultaneously Avoiding a Vincular and a Covincular Pattern of Length 3
Vincular and covincular patterns are generalizations of classical patterns allowing restrictions on the indices and values of the occurrences in a permutation. In this paper we study the integer sequences arising as the enumerations of permutations simultaneously avoiding a vincular and a covincular pattern, both of length 3, with at most one restriction. We see familiar sequences, such as the Catalan and Motzkin numbers, but also some previously unknown sequences which have close links to other combinatorial objects such as lattice paths and integer partitions. Where possible we include a generating function for the enumeration. One of the cases considered settles a conjecture by Pudwell (2010) on the Wilf-equivalence of barred patterns. We also give an alternative proof of the classic result that permutations avoiding 123 are counted by the Catalan numbers.

Pattern avoidance for set partitions à la Klazar
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2015, Permutation Patterns (September 7, 2016) dmtcs:1327 • View PublicationBIB
In 2000 Klazar introduced a new notion of pattern avoidance in the context of set partitions of $[n]=\{1,\ldots, n\}$. The purpose of the present paper is to undertake a study of the concept of Wilf-equivalence based on Klazar's notion. We determine all Wilf-equivalences for partitions with exactly two blocks, one of which is a singleton block, and we conjecture that, for $n\geq 4$, these are all the Wilf-equivalences except for those arising from complementation. If $τ$ is a partition of $[k]$ and $Π_n(τ)$ denotes the set of all partitions of $[n]$ that avoid $τ$, we establish inequalities between $|Π_n(τ_1)|$ and $|Π_n(τ_2)|$ for several choices of $τ_1$ and $τ_2$, and we prove that if $τ_2$ is the partition of $[k]$ with only one block, then $|Π_n(τ_1)| <|Π_n(τ_2)|$ for all $n>k$ and all partitions $τ_1$ of $[k]$ with exactly two blocks. We conjecture that this result holds for all partitions $τ_1$ of $[k]$. Finally, we enumerate $Π_n(τ)$ for all partitions $τ$ of $[4]$.

On a refinement of Wilf-equivalence for permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Dokos et al. conjectured that for all $k, m\geq 1$, the patterns $ 12\ldots k(k+m+1)\ldots (k+2)(k+1) $ and $(m+1)(m+2)\ldots (k+m+1)m\ldots 21 $ are $maj$-Wilf-equivalent. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for all $k\geq 1$ and $m=1$. In fact, we construct a descent set preserving bijection between $ 12\ldots k (k-1) $-avoiding permutations and $23\ldots k1$-avoiding permutations for all $k\geq 3$. As a corollary, our bijection enables us to settle a conjecture of Gowravaram and Jagadeesan concerning the Wilf-equivalence for permutations with given descent sets.

Egge triples and unbalanced Wilf-equivalence
Egge conjectured that permutations avoiding the set of patterns $\{2143,3142,τ\}$, where $τ\in\{246135,254613,263514,524361,546132\}$, are enumerated by the large Schröder numbers. Consequently, $\{2143,3142,τ\}$ with $τ$ as above is Wilf-equivalent to the set of patterns $\{2413,3142\}$. Burstein and Pantone proved the case of $τ=246135$. We prove the remaining four cases. As a byproduct of our proof, we also enumerate the case $τ=4132$.

A general theory of Wilf-equivalence for Catalan structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The existence of apparently coincidental equalities (also called Wilf-equivalences) between the enumeration sequences, or generating functions, of various hereditary classes of combinatorial structures has attracted significant interest. We investigate such coincidences among non-crossing matchings and a variety of other Catalan structures including Dyck paths, 231-avoiding permutations and plane forests. In particular we consider principal classes defined by not containing an occurrence of a single given structure. An easily computed equivalence relation among structures is described such that if two structures are equivalent then the associated principal classes have the same enumeration sequence. We give an asymptotic estimate of the number of equivalence classes of this relation among structures of a given size and show that it is exponentially smaller than the corresponding Catalan number. In other words these "coincidental" equalities are in fact very common among principal classes. Our results also allow us to prove, in a unified and bijective manner, several known Wilf-equivalences from the literature.

On the Rearrangement Conjecture for Generalized Factor Order Over $\mathbb{P}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Rearrangement Conjecture states that if two words over $\mathbb{P}$ are Wilf-equivalent in the factor order on $\mathbb{P}^\ast$ then they are rearrangements of each other. We introduce the notion of strong Wilf-equivalence and prove that if two words over $\mathbb{P}$ are strongly Wilf-equivalent then they are rearrangements of each other. We further conjecture that Wilf-equivalence implies strong Wilf-equivalence.

On avoidance of patterns of the form σ-τ by words over a finite alphabet
Published • View PublicationBIB
Vincular or dashed patterns resemble classical patterns except that some of the letters within an occurrence are required to be adjacent. We prove several infinite families of Wilf-equivalences for k-ary words involving vincular patterns containing a single dash, which explain the majority of the equivalences witnessed for such patterns of length four. When combined with previous results, numerical evidence, and some arguments in specific cases, we obtain the complete Wilf-classification for all vincular patterns of length four containing a single dash. In some cases, our proof shows further that the equivalence holds for multiset permutations since it is seen to respect the number of occurrences of each letter within a word. Some related enumerative results are provided for patterns σ of length four, among them generating function formulas for the number of members of [k]^n avoiding any σ of the form 11a-b.

We prove that the set of patterns {1324,3416725} is Wilf-equivalent to the pattern 1234 and that the set of patterns {2143,3142,246135} is Wilf-equivalent to the set of patterns {2413,3142}. These are the first known unbalanced Wilf-equivalences for classical patterns between finite sets of patterns.

Operators of equivalent sorting power and related Wilf-equivalences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study sorting operators $\mathbf{A}$ on permutations that are obtained composing Knuth's stack sorting operator $\mathbf{S}$ and the reversal operator $\mathbf{R}$, as many times as desired. For any such operator $\mathbf{A}$, we provide a size-preserving bijection between the set of permutations sorted by $\mathbf{S} \circ \mathbf{A}$ and the set of those sorted by $\mathbf{S} \circ \mathbf{R} \circ \mathbf{A}$, proving that these sets are enumerated by the same sequence, but also that many classical permutation statistics are equidistributed across these two sets. The description of this family of bijections is based on a bijection between the set of permutations avoiding the pattern $231$ and the set of those avoiding $132$ which preserves many permutation statistics. We also present other properties of this bijection, in particular for finding pairs of Wilf-equivalent permutation classes.
