We introduce the random graph $\mathcal{P}(n,q)$ which results from taking the union of two paths of length $n\geq 1$, where the vertices of one of the paths have been relabelled according to a Mallows permutation with parameter $0<q(n)\leq 1$. This random graph model, the tangled path, goes through an evolution: if $q$ is close to $0$ the graph bears resemblance to a path, and as $q$ tends to $1$ it becomes an expander. In an effort to understand the evolution of $\mathcal{P}(n,q)$ we determine the treewidth and cutwidth of $\mathcal{P}(n,q)$ up to log factors for all $q$. We also show that the property of having a separator of size one has a sharp threshold. In addition, we prove bounds on the diameter, and vertex isoperimetric number for specific values of $q$.

In [A. Aguglia, A. Cossidente, G. Korchmaros, "On quasi-Hermitian varieties", J. Comb. Des. 20 (2012), 433-447] new quasi-Hermitian varieties ${\mathcal M}_{α,β}$ in $\mathrm{PG}(r,q^2)$ depending on a pair of parameters $α,β$ from the underlying field $\mathrm{GF}(q^2)$ have been constructed. In the present paper we determine the projective equivalence classes of such varieties for $r=3$ and $q$ odd.
Enumeration of binary trees compatible with a perfect phylogeny

Evolutionary models used for describing molecular sequence variation suppose that at a non-recombining genomic segment, sequences share ancestry that can be represented as a genealogy--a rooted, binary, timed tree, with tips corresponding to individual sequences. Under the infinitely-many-sites mutation model, mutations are randomly superimposed along the branches of the genealogy, so that every mutation occurs at a chromosomal site that has not previously mutated; if a mutation occurs at an interior branch, then all individuals descending from that branch carry the mutation. The implication is that observed patterns of molecular variation from this model impose combinatorial constraints on the hidden state space of genealogies. In particular, observed molecular variation can be represented in the form of a perfect phylogeny, a tree structure that fully encodes the mutational differences among sequences. For a sample of n sequences, a perfect phylogeny might not possess n distinct leaves, and hence might be compatible with many possible binary tree structures that could describe the evolutionary relationships among the n sequences. Here, we investigate enumerative properties of the set of binary ranked and unranked tree shapes that are compatible with a perfect phylogeny, and hence, the binary ranked and unranked tree shapes conditioned on an observed pattern of mutations under the infinitely-many-sites mutation model. We provide a recursive enumeration of these shapes. We consider both perfect phylogenies that can be represented as binary and those that are multifurcating. The results have implications for computational aspects of the statistical inference of evolutionary parameters that underlie sets of molecular sequences.

We discover new linear relations between the chromatic symmetric functions of certain sequences of graphs and apply these relations to find new families of e-positive unit interval graphs. Motivated by the results of Gebhard and Sagan, we revisit their ideas and reinterpret their equivalence relation in terms of a new quotient algebra of NCSym. We investigate the projection of the chromatic symmetric function $Y_G$ in noncommuting variables in this quotient algebra, which defines $y_{G : v}$, the chromatic symmetric function of a graph G centred at a vertex v. We then apply our methods to $y_{G :v}$ and find new families of unit interval graphs that are (e)-positive, a stronger condition than classical e-positivity, thus confirming new cases of the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.
In our study of $y_{G : v}$, we also describe methods of constructing new e-positive graphs from given $(e)$-positive graphs and classify the (e)-positivity of trees and cut vertices. We moreover construct a related quotient algebra of NCQSym to prove theorems relating the coefficients of $y_{G : v}$ to acyclic orientations of graphs, including a noncommutative refinement of Stanley's sink theorem.

The proof of the non-existence of Griesmer $[104, 4, 82]_5$-codes is just one of many examples where extendability results are used. In a series of papers Landjev and Rousseva have introduced the concept of $(t\operatorname{mod} q)$-arcs as a general framework for extendability results for codes and arcs. Here we complete the known partial classification of $(3 \operatorname{mod} 5)$-arcs in $\operatorname{PG}(3,5)$ and uncover two missing, rather exceptional, examples disproving a conjecture of Landjev and Rousseva. As also the original non-existence proof of Griesmer $[104, 4, 82]_5$-codes is affected, we present an extended proof to fill this gap.

Let G and H be equivalent cographs with their reduction R_G and R_H, and suppose the vertices of R_G and R_H are labeled by the twin numbers t_i of the k twin classes they represent. In this paper, we prove that G and H have at least k + \sum_{i\in I}(t_i-1) Laplacian eigenvalues in common, where I is the indices of the twin classes whose types are identical in G and H. This confirms the conjecture proposed by T. Abrishami \cite{Abris}. We also show that no two nonisomorphic equivalent cographs are L-cospectral.
The $q$-golden ratio, Catalan numbers, and an identity of Sauermann--Wigderson
In this note, we present some basic properties of $q$-Fibonacci numbers and their relationship to the $q$-golden ratio and Catalan numbers. We then use this relationship to give a short proof of a combinatorial identity.
A Combinatorial Interpretation for Sequence A345973 in OEIS
We give a combinatorial interpretation in terms of bicolored ordered trees for the sequence (a_n)_{n>=1}=(1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 20, 36, 73,... ), A345973 in OEIS, whose generating function satisfies the defining identity Sum_{n>=1}a_n x^n = x + x^2/Product_{n>=1}(1 - a_n x^n).

Let $X$ be a finite connected poset and $K$ a field. We study the question, when all Lie automorphisms of the incidence algebra $I(X,K)$ are proper. Without any restriction on the length of $X$ we find only a sufficient condition involving certain equivalence relation on the set of maximal chains of $X$. For some classes of posets of length one, such as finite connected crownless posets (i.e., without weak crown subposets), crowns and ordinal sums of two antichains we give a complete answer.

For a finite subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, Lazar and Wachs (2019) conjectured that the number of cycles on $A$ with only even-odd drops is equal to the number of D-cycles on $A$. In this note, we introduce cycles on a multiset with only even-odd drops and prove bijectively a multiset version of their conjecture. As a consequence, the number of cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops equals the Genocchi number $g_n$. With Laguerre histories as an intermediate structure, we also construct a bijection between a class of permutations of length $2n-1$ known to be counted by $g_n$ invented by Dumont and the cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops.

In this paper, we construct new families of flag-transitive linear spaces with $q^{2n}$ points and $q^{2}$ points on each line that admit a one-dimensional affine automorphism group. We achieve this by building a natural connection with permutation polynomials of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2}}$ of a particular form and following the scheme of Pauley and Bamberg in [A construction of one-dimensional affine flag-transitive linear spaces, Finite Fields Appl. 14 (2008) 537-548].

Let $F_{a_1,\dots,a_k}$ be a graph consisting of $k$ cycles of odd length $2a_1+1,\dots, 2a_k+1$, respectively which intersect in exactly a common vertex, where $k\geq1$ and $a_1\ge a_2\ge \cdots\ge a_k\ge 1$. In this paper, we present a sharp upper bound for the signless Laplacian spectral radius of all $F_{a_1,\dots,a_k}$-free graphs and characterize all extremal graphs which attain the bound. The stability methods and structure of graphs associated with the eigenvalue are adapted for the proof.
The saturation number of $C_6$

A graph $G$ is called $C_k$-saturated if $G$ is $C_k$-free but $G+e$ not for any $e\in E(\overline{G})$. The saturation number of $C_k$, denoted $sat(n,C_k)$, is the minimum number of edges in a $C_k$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. Finding the exact values of $sat(n,C_k)$ has been one of the most intriguing open problems in extremal graph theory. In this paper, we study the saturation number of $C_6$. We prove that ${4n}/{3}-2 \le sat(n,C_6) \le {(4n+1)}/{3}$ for $n\ge9$, which significantly improves the existing lower and upper bounds for $sat(n,C_6)$.

We denote by $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ the coefficient of $q^n$ in the series expansion of $(q;q)_\infty^m(q^t;q^t)_\infty^{-m}$, which is the $m$-th power of the infinite Borwein product. Let $t$ and $m$ be positive integers with $m(t-1)\leq 24$. We provide asymptotic formula for $c_t^{(m)}(n)$, and give characterizations of $n$ for which $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ is positive, negative or zero. We show that $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ is ultimately periodic in sign and conjecture that this is still true for other positive integer values of $t$ and $m$. Furthermore, we confirm this conjecture in the cases $(t,m)=(2,m),(p,1),(p,3)$ for arbitrary positive integer $m$ and prime $p$.
On maximum intersecting sets in direct and wreath product of groups
For a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $V$, a subset $I$ of $G$ is said to be an intersecting set if for every pair of elements $g,h\in I$ there exists $v \in V$ such that $g(v) = h(v)$. The intersection density $ρ(G)$ of a transitive permutation group $G$ is the maximum value of the quotient $|I|/|G_v|$ where $G_v$ is a stabilizer of a point $v\in V$ and $I$ runs over all intersecting sets in $G$. If $G_v$ is the largest intersecting set in $G$ then $G$ is said to have the Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR)-property, and moreover, $G$ has the strict-EKR-property if every intersecting set of maximum size in $G$ is a coset of a point stabilizer. Intersecting sets in $G$ coincide with independent sets in the so-called derangement graph $Γ_G$, defined as the Cayley graph on $G$ with connection set consisting of all derangements, that is, fixed-point free elements of $G$. In this paper a conjecture regarding the existence of transitive permutation groups whose derangement graphs are complete multipartite graphs, posed by Meagher, Razafimahatratra and Spiga in [J.Combin. Theory Ser. A 180 (2021), 105390], is proved. The proof uses direct product of groups. Questions regarding maximum intersecting sets in direct and wreath products of groups and the (strict)-EKR-property of these group products are also investigated. In addition, some errors appearing in the literature on this topic are corrected.

In the present paper, we study arrangements of smooth plane conics having only nodes and tacnodes as the singularities. We provide an interesting estimation on the number of nodes and tacnodes that depends only on a linear function of the number of conics. Based on that result, we obtain a new upper bound on the number of tacnodes which turns out to be better than Miyaoka's bound for a large enough number of conics. We also study the freeness and nearly freeness of such arrangements providing a detailed description.

Andrews and Merca investigated a truncated version of Euler's pentagonal number theorem and showed that the coefficients of the truncated series are nonnegative. They also considered the truncated series arising from Jacobi's triple product identity, and they that its coefficients are nonnegative. This conjecture was posed by Guo and Zeng independently and confirmed by Mao and Yee using different approaches. In this paper, we provide a new combinatorial proof of their nonnegativity result related to Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Meanwhile, we find an analogous result for a truncated series arising from Jacobi's triple product identity in a different manner.
On the relationship between variable Wiener index and variable Szeged index

We resolve two conjectures of Hriňáková, Knor and Škrekovski (2019) concerning the relationship between the variable Wiener index and variable Szeged index for a connected, non-complete graph, one of which would imply the other. The strong conjecture is that for any such graph there is a critical exponent in $(0,1]$, below which the variable Wiener index is larger and above which the variable Szeged index is larger. The weak conjecture is that the variable Szeged index is always larger for any exponent exceeding $1$. They proved the weak conjecture for bipartite graphs, and the strong conjecture for trees. In this note we disprove the strong conjecture, although we show that it is true for almost all graphs, and for bipartite and block graphs. We also show that the weak conjecture holds for all graphs by proving a majorization relationship.
The covering radius of permutation designs
A notion of $t$-designs in the symmetric group on $n$ letters was introduced by Godsil in 1988. In particular $t$-transitive sets of permutations form a $t$-design. We derive upper bounds on the covering radius of these designs, as a function of $n$ and $t$ and in terms of the largest zeros of Charlier polynomials.

We prove that the random flag complex has a probability regime where the probability of nonvanishing homology is asymptotically bounded away from zero and away from one. Related to this main result we also establish new bounds on a sharp threshold for the fundamental group of a random flag complex to be a free group. In doing so we show that there is an intermediate probability regime in which the random flag complex has fundamental group which is neither free nor has Kazhdan's property (T).
