Lecture Notes on "Random Matrices"
This in an introduction to random matrix theory, giving an impression of some of the most important aspects of this modern subject. In particular, it covers the basic combinatorial and analytic theory around Wigner's semicircle law, featuring also concentration phenomena, and the Tracy-Widom distribution of the largest eigenvalue. The circular law and a discussion of Voiculescu's multivariate extension of the semicircle law, as an appetizer for free probability theory, also make an appearance. The material here was presented in the winter term 2019/20 at Saarland University in 24 lectures of 90 minutes each. The lectures were recorded and can be found online at https://www.math.uni-sb.de/ag/speicher/web_video/index.html.

Asymptotic Degree of Random Monomial Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
One of the fundamental invariants connecting algebra and geometry is the degree of an ideal. In this paper we derive the probabilistic behavior of degree with respect to the versatile Erdős-Rényi-type model for random monomial ideals defined in \cite{rmi}. We study the staircase structure associated to a monomial ideal, and show that in the random case the shape of the staircase diagram is approximately hyperbolic, and this behavior is robust across several random models. Since the discrete volume under this staircase is related to the summatory higher-order divisor function studied in number theory, we use this connection and our control over the shape of the staircase diagram to derive the asymptotic degree of a random monomial ideal. Another way to compute the degree of a monomial ideal is with a standard pair decomposition. This paper derives bounds on the number of standard pairs of a random monomial ideal indexed by any subset of the ring variables. The standard pairs indexed by maximal subsets give a count of degree, as well as being a more nuanced invariant of the random monomial ideal.

Let $\De$ be a non-degenerate simplex on $k$ vertices. We prove that there exists a threshold $s_k<k$ such that any set $A\subs \R^k$ of Hausdorff dimension $dim\,A\geq s_k$ necessarily contains a similar copy of the simplex $\De$.

Projective dimensions of hyperplane arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We establish a general theory for projective dimensions of the logarithmic derivation modules of hyperplane arrangements. That includes the addition-deletion and restriction theorem, Yoshinaga-type result, and the division theorem for projective dimensions of hyperplane arrangements. They are generalizations of the free arrangement cases, that can be regarded as the special case of our result when the projective dimension is zero. The keys to prove them are several new methods to determine the surjectivity of the Euler and the Ziegler restriction maps, that is combinatorial when the projective dimension is not maximal for all localizations. Also, we introduce a new class of arrangements in which the projective dimension is comibinatorially determined.

Counting generalized Schröder paths
A Schröder path is a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(2n,0)$ with steps $(1,1)$, $(1,-1)$ and $(2,0)$ that never goes below the $x-$axis. A small Schröder path is a Schröder path with no $(2,0)$ steps on the $x-$axis. In this paper, a 3-variable generating function $R_L(x,y,z)$ is given for Schröder paths and small Schröder paths respectively. As corollaries, we obtain the generating functions for several kinds of generalized Schröder paths counted according to the order in a unified way.

Dominance complexes and vertex cover numbers of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The dominance complex $D(G)$ of a simple graph $G = (V,E)$ is the simplicial complex consisting of the subsets of $V$ whose complements are dominating. We show that the connectivity of $D(G)$ plus $2$ is a lower bound for the vertex cover number $τ(G)$ of $G$.
Minimal Ramsey graphs with many vertices of small degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given any graph $H$, a graph $G$ is said to be $q$-Ramsey for $H$ if every coloring of the edges of $G$ with $q$ colors yields a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to $H$. Further, such a graph $G$ is said to be minimal $q$-Ramsey for $H$ if additionally no proper subgraph $G'$ of $G$ is $q$-Ramsey for $H$. In 1976, Burr, Erdős, and Lovász initiated the study of the parameter $s_q(H)$, defined as the smallest minimum degree among all minimal $q$-Ramsey graphs for $H$. In this paper, we consider the problem of determining how many vertices of degree $s_q(H)$ a minimal $q$-Ramsey graph for $H$ can contain. Specifically, we seek to identify graphs for which a minimal $q$-Ramsey graph can contain arbitrarily many such vertices. We call a graph satisfying this property $s_q$-abundant. Among other results, we prove that every cycle is $s_q$-abundant for any integer $q\geq 2$. We also discuss the cases when $H$ is a clique or a clique with a pendant edge, extending previous results of Burr et al. and Fox et al. To prove our results and construct suitable minimal Ramsey graphs, we develop certain new gadget graphs, called pattern gadgets, which generalize and extend earlier constructions that have proven useful in the study of minimal Ramsey graphs. These new gadgets might be of independent interest.

The complete forcing numbers of hexagonal systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a graph with a perfect matching. A complete forcing set of G is a subset of edges of G to which the restriction of every perfect matching is a forcing set of it. The complete forcing number of G is the minimum cardinality of complete forcing sets of G. Xu et al. gave a characterization for a complete forcing set and derived some explicit formulas for the complete forcing numbers of cata-condensed hexagonal systems. In this paper, we consider general hexagonal systems. We present an upper bound on the complete forcing numbers of hexagonal systems in terms of elementary edge-cut cover and two lower bounds by the number of hexagons and matching number respectively. As applications, we obtain some explicit formulas for the complete forcing numbers of some types of hexagonal systems including parallelogram, regular hexagon- and rectangle-shaped hexagonal systems.

Refined Wilf-equivalences by Comtet statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
We launch a systematic study of the refined Wilf-equivalences by the statistics $\mathsf{comp}$ and $\mathsf{iar}$, where $\mathsf{comp}(π)$ and $\mathsf{iar}(π)$ are the number of components and the length of the initial ascending run of a permutation $π$, respectively. As Comtet was the first one to consider the statistic $\mathsf{comp}$ in his book {\em Analyse combinatoire}, any statistic equidistributed with $\mathsf{comp}$ over a class of permutations is called by us a {\em Comtet statistic} over such class. This work is motivated by a triple equidistribution result of Rubey on $321$-avoiding permutations, and a recent result of the first and third authors that $\mathsf{iar}$ is a Comtet statistic over separable permutations. Some highlights of our results are: (1) Bijective proofs of the symmetry of the double Comtet distribution $(\mathsf{comp},\mathsf{iar})$ over several Catalan and Schröder classes, preserving the values of the left-to-right maxima. (2) A complete classification of $\mathsf{comp}$- and $\mathsf{iar}$-Wilf-equivalences for length $3$ patterns and pairs of length $3$ patterns. Calculations of the $(\mathsf{des},\mathsf{iar},\mathsf{comp})$ generating functions over these pattern avoiding classes and separable permutations. (3) A further refinement by the Comtet statistic $\mathsf{iar}$, of Wang's recent descent-double descent-Wilf equivalence between separable permutations and $(2413,4213)$-avoiding permutations.
Ollivier curvature of random geometric graphs converges to Ricci curvature of their Riemannian manifolds
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry, v.70(3), p.671-712 , 2023 • View Publication • BIB
Curvature is a fundamental geometric characteristic of smooth spaces. In recent years different notions of curvature have been developed for combinatorial discrete objects such as graphs. However, the connections between such discrete notions of curvature and their smooth counterparts remain lurking and moot. In particular, it is not rigorously known if any notion of graph curvature converges to any traditional notion of curvature of smooth space. Here we prove that in proper settings the Ollivier-Ricci curvature of random geometric graphs in Riemannian manifolds converges to the Ricci curvature of the manifold. This is the first rigorous result linking curvature of random graphs to curvature of smooth spaces. Our results hold for different notions of graph distances, including the rescaled shortest path distance, and for different graph densities. With the scaling of the average degree, as a function of the graph size, ranging from nearly logarithmic to nearly linear.
Pencils of Quadrics: Old and New
Two-dimensional linear spaces of symmetric matrices are classified by Segre symbols. After reviewing known facts from linear algebra and projective geometry, we address new questions motivated by algebraic statistics and optimization. We compute the reciprocal curve and the maximum likelihood degrees, and we study strata of pencils in the Grassmannian.

Some new series for $1/π$ motivated by congruences
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we deduce a family of six new series for $1/π$; for example, $$\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{41673840n+4777111}{5780^n}W_n\left(\frac{1444}{1445}\right) =\frac{147758475}{\sqrt{95}\,π}$$ where $W_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk\binom{n+k}k\binom{2k}k\binom{2(n-k)}{n-k}x^k$. To do so, we transform our series to series of the type $$\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{an+b}{m^n}\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^4$$ studied by Cooper in 2012. In addition, we pose $17$ new series for $1/π$ motivated by congruences; for example, we conjecture that $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{4290k+367}{3136^k}\binom{2k}kT_k(14,1)T_k(17,16)=\frac{5390}π,$$ where $T_k(b,c)$ is the coefficient of $x^k$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^k$.

Turán-type results for intersection graphs of boxes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this short note, we prove the following analog of the Kővári-Sós-Turán theorem for intersection graphs of boxes. If $G$ is the intersection graph of $n$ axis-parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ such that $G$ contains no copy of $K_{t,t}$, then $G$ has at most $ctn(\log n)^{2d+3}$ edges, where $c=c(d)>0$ only depends on $d$. Our proof is based on exploring connections between boxicity, separation dimension and poset dimension. Using this approach, we also show that a construction of Basit et al. of $K_{2,2}$-free incidence graphs of points and rectangles in the plane can be used to disprove a conjecture of Alon et al. We show that there exist graphs of separation dimension 4 having superlinear number of edges.

Sharp isoperimetric inequalities for infinite plane graphs with bounded vertex and face degrees
We provide sharp bounds for the isoperimetric constants of infinite plane graphs (tessellations) with bounded vertex and face degrees. For example, if $G$ is a plane graph satisfying the inequalities $p_1 \leq \mbox{deg}\ v \leq p_2$ for $v \in V(G)$ and $q_1 \leq \mbox{deg}\ f \leq q_2$ for $f \in F(G)$, where $p_1, p_2, q_1$, and $q_2$ are natural numbers such that $1/p_i + 1/q_i \leq 1/2$, $i=1,2$, then we show that \[ Φ(p_1, q_1) \leq \inf_S \frac{|\partial S|}{|V(S)|} \leq Φ(p_2, q_2), \] where the infimum is taken over all finite nonempty subgraphs $S \subset G$, $\partial S$ is the set of edges connecting $S$ to $G \setminus S$, and $Φ(p,q)$ is defined by \[ Φ(p, q) = (p-2) \sqrt{1 - \frac{4}{(p-2)(q-2)}}. \] For $p_1=3$ this gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture by Lawrencenko, Plummer, and Zha from 2002, and for general $p_i$ and $q_i$ our result fully resolves a question posed in the book by Lyons and Peres from 2016, where they extended the conjecture of Lawrencenko et al. to the above form.

Guessing Numbers and Extremal Graph Theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a given number of colors, $s$, the guessing number of a graph is the (base $s$) logarithm of the cardinality of the largest family of colorings of the vertex set of the graph such that the color of each vertex can be determined from the colors of the vertices in its neighborhood. This quantity is related to problems in network coding, circuit complexity and graph entropy. We study the guessing number of graphs as a graph property in the context of classic extremal questions, and its relationship to the forbidden subgraph property. We find the extremal number with respect to the property of having guessing number $\leq a$, for fixed $a$. Furthermore, we find an upper bound on the saturation number for this property, and a method to construct further saturated graphs that lie between these two extremes. We show that, for a fixed number of colors, bounding the guessing number is equivalent to forbidding a finite set of subgraphs.

New Results on Pattern-Replacement Equivalences: Generalizing a Classical Theorem and Revising a Recent Conjecture
In this paper we study pattern-replacement equivalence relations on the set $S_n$ of permutations of length $n$. Each equivalence relation is determined by a set of patterns, and equivalent permutations are connected by pattern-replacements in a manner similar to that of the Knuth relation. One of our main results generalizes the celebrated Erdos-Szekeres Theorem for permutation pattern-avoidance to a new result for permutation pattern-replacement. In particular, we show that under the $\{123 \cdots k, k \cdots 321\}$-equivalence, all permutations in $S_n$ are equivalent up to parity when $n \ge Ω(k^2)$. Additionally, we extend the work of Kuszmaul and Zhou on an infinite family of pattern-replacement equivalences known as the rotational equivalences. Kuszmaul and Zhou proved that the rotational equivalences always yield either one or two nontrivial equivalence classes in $S_n$, and conjectured that the number of nontrivial classes depended only on the patterns involved in the rotational equivalence (rather than on $n$). We present a counterexample to their conjecture, and prove a new theorem fully classifying (for large $n$) when there is one nontrivial equivalence class and when there are two nontrivial equivalence classes. Finally, we computationally analyze the pattern-replacement equivalences given by sets of pairs of patterns of length four. We then focus on three cases, in which the number of nontrivial equivalence classes matches an OEIS sequence. For two of these we present full proofs of the enumeration and for the third we suggest a potential future method of proof.
Threshold rates for properties of random codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose that $P$ is a property that may be satisfied by a random code $C \subset Σ^n$. For example, for some $p \in (0,1)$, ${P}$ might be the property that there exist three elements of $C$ that lie in some Hamming ball of radius $pn$. We say that $R^*$ is the threshold rate for ${P}$ if a random code of rate $R^* + ε$ is very likely to satisfy ${P}$, while a random code of rate $R^* - ε$ is very unlikely to satisfy ${P}$. While random codes are well-studied in coding theory, even the threshold rates for relatively simple properties like the one above are not well understood. We characterize threshold rates for a rich class of properties. These properties, like the example above, are defined by the inclusion of specific sets of codewords which are also suitably "symmetric". For properties in this class, we show that the threshold rate is in fact equal to the lower bound that a simple first-moment calculation obtains. Our techniques not only pin down the threshold rate for the property ${P}$ above, they give sharp bounds on the threshold rate for list-recovery in several parameter regimes, as well as an efficient algorithm for estimating the threshold rates for list-recovery in general.

Tight Chiral Polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A chiral polytope with Schläfli symbol $\{p_1, \ldots, p_{n-1}\}$ has at least $2p_1 \cdots p_{n-1}$ flags, and it is called \emph{tight} if the number of flags meets this lower bound. The Schläfli symbols of tight chiral polyhedra were classified in an earlier paper, and another paper proved that there are no tight chiral $n$-polytopes with $n \geq 6$. Here we prove that there are no tight chiral $5$-polytopes, describe 11 families of tight chiral $4$-polytopes, and show that every tight chiral $4$-polytope covers a polytope from one of those families.

On the abstract chromatic number and its computability for finitely axiomatizable theories
Published • View Publication • BIB
The celebrated Erdős--Stone--Simonovits theorem characterizes the asymptotic maximum edge density in $\mathcal{F}$-free graphs as $1 - 1/(χ(\mathcal{F})-1) + o(1)$, where $χ(\mathcal{F})$ is the minimum chromatic number of a graph in $\mathcal{F}$. In Examples 25 and 31 of [L. N. Coregliano and A. A. Razborov. Semantic limits of dense combinatorial objects. Uspekhi Mat. Nauk, 75(4(454)):45-152, 2020], it was shown that this result can be extended to the general setting of graphs with extra structure: the maximum asymptotic density of a graph with extra structure without some induced subgraphs is $1 - 1/(χ(I) - 1) + o(1)$ for an appropriately defined abstract chromatic number $χ(I)$. As the name suggests, the original formula for the abstract chromatic number is so abstract that its (algorithmic) computability was left open. In this paper, we both extend this result to characterize maximum asymptotic density of $t$-cliques in of graphs with extra structure without some induced subgraphs in terms of $χ(I)$ and we present a more concrete formula for $χ(I)$ that allows us to show its computability when both the extra structure and the forbidden subgraphs can be described by a finitely axiomatizable universal first-order theory. Our alternative formula for $χ(I)$ makes use of a partite version of Ramsey's Theorem for structures on first-order relational languages.
