The sandpile model on the complete split graph, Motzkin words, and tiered parking functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify recurrent states of the Abelian sandpile model (ASM) on the complete split graph. There are two distinct cases to be considered that depend upon the location of the sink vertex in the complete split graph. This characterisation of decreasing recurrent states is in terms of Motzkin words and can also be characterised in terms of combinatorial necklaces. We also give a characterisation of the recurrent states in terms of a new type of parking function that we call a tiered parking function. These parking functions are characterised by assigning a tier (or colour) to each of the cars, and specifying how many cars of a lower-tier one wishes to have parked before them. We also enumerate the different sets of recurrent configurations studied in this paper, and in doing so derive a formula for the number of spanning trees of the complete split graph that uses a bijective Prüfer code argument.

Signed Countings of Type B and D Permutations and $t,q$-Euler numbers
A classical result states that the parity balance of the number of excedances of all permutations (derangements, respectively) of length $n$ is the Euler number. In 2010, Josuat-Vergès gives a $q$-analogue with $q$ representing the number of crossings. We extend this result to the permutations (derangements, respectively) of type B and D. It turns out that the signed countings are related to the derivative polynomials of $\tan$ and $\sec$. Springer numbers defined by Springer can be regarded as an analogue of Euler numbers defined on every Coxeter group. In 1992 Arnol'd showed that the Springer numbers of classical types A, B, D count various combinatorial objects, called snakes. In 1999 Hoffman found that derivative polynomials of $\sec x$ and $\tan x$ and their subtraction evaluated at certain values count exactly the number of snakes of certain types. Then Josuat-Vergès studied the $(t,q)$-analogs of derivative polynomials $Q_n(t,q)$, $R_n(t,q)$ and showed that as setting $q=1$ the polynomials are enumerators of snakes with respect to the number of sign-changing. Our second result is to find combinatorial interpretations of $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as enumerators of the snakes, although the outcome is somewhat messy.

Total Coloring for some classes of Cayley graphs
Published in Soft Computing, Springer (2023) • View Publication • BIB
The Total coloring conjecture states that any simple graph G with maximum degree D can be totally colored with at most D+2 colors. In this paper, we have obtained the total chromatic number for some classes of Cayley graphs.

Truncated theta series and partitions into distinct parts
Linear inequalities involving Euler's partition function $p(n)$ have been the subject of recent studies. In this article, we consider the partition function $Q(n)$ counting the partitions of $n$ into distinct parts. Using truncated theta series, we provide four infinite families of linear inequalities for $Q(n)$ and partition theoretic interpretations for these results.

Rank partition functions and truncated theta identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
In $1944$, Freeman Dyson defined the concept of rank of an integer partition and introduced without definition the term of crank of an integer partition. A definition for the crank satisfying the properties hypothesized for it by Dyson was discovered in 1988 by G. E. Andrews and F. G. Garvan. In this paper, we introduce truncated forms for two theta identities involving the generating functions for partitions with non-negative rank and non-negative crank. As corollaries we derive new infinite families of linear inequalities for the partition function $p(n)$. The number of Garden of Eden partitions are also considered in this context in order to provide other infinite families of linear inequalities for $p(n)$.

Partition identities and application to infinite dimensional Groebner basis and viceversa
Published in Arc Schemes and Singularities, page 145, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
In the first part of this article, we consider a Groebner basis of the differential ideal {x_1^2} with respect to "the" weighted lexicographical monomial order and show that its computation is related with an identity involving the partitions that appear in the first Rogers-Ramanujan identity. We then prove that a Grobener basis of this ideal is not differentially finite in contrary with the case of "the" weighted reverse lexicographical order. In the second part, we give a simple and direct proof of a theorem of Nguyen Duc Tam about the Groaner basis of the differential ideal {x_1y_1}; we then obtain identities involving partitions with 2 colors.

Looking for a new member of Gordon's identities
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 25(3), 543-571(2021) • View Publication • BIB
We give a commutative algebra viewpoint on Andrews recursive formula for the partitions appearing in "Gordon's identities", which are a generalization of Rogers-Ramanujan identities. Using this approach and differential ideals we conjecture a family of partition identities which extend Gordon's identities. This family is indexed by r >=2. We prove the conjecture for r=2 and r=3.

Hall algebras and quantum symmetric pairs of Kac-Moody type
Published in Adv. Math. 430 (2023), Paper No. 109215, 56 pp • View Publication • BIB
We extend our $\imath$Hall algebra construction from acyclic to arbitrary $\imath$quivers, where the $\imath$quiver algebras are infinite-dimensional 1-Gorenstein in general. Then we establish an injective homomorphism from the universal $\imath$quantum group of Kac-Moody type arising from quantum symmetric pairs to the $\imath$Hall algebra associated to a virtually acyclic $\imath$quiver.

Maximum $w$-cyclic holely group divisible packings with block size three and applications to optical orthogonal codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we investigate combinatorial constructions for $w$-cyclic holely group divisible packings with block size three (briefly by $3$-HGDPs). For any positive integers $u,v,w$ with $u\equiv0,1~(\bmod~3)$, the exact number of base blocks of a maximum $w$-cyclic $3$-HGDP of type $(u,w^v)$ is determined. This result is used to determine the exact number of codewords in a maximum three-dimensional $(u\times v\times w,3,1)$ optical orthogonal code with at most one optical pulse per spatial plane and per wavelength plane.

Patterns in Shi tableaux and Dyck paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
Shi tableaux are special binary fillings of certain Young diagrams which arise in the study of Shi hyperplane arrangements related to classical root systems. For type $A$, the set $\mathcal T$ of Shi tableaux naturally coincides with the set of Dyck paths, for which various notions of patterns have been introduced and studied over the years. In this paper we define a notion of pattern occurrence on $\mathcal T$ which, although it can be regarded as a pattern on Dyck paths, it is motivated by the underlying geometric structure of the tableaux. Our main goal in this work is to study the poset of Shi tableaux defined by pattern-containment. More precisely, we determine explicit formulas for upper and lower covers for each $T\in\mathcal T$, we consider pattern avoidance for the smallest non-trivial tableaux (size 2) and generalize these results to certain tableau of larger size. We conclude with open problems and possible future directions.

The structure of Zeckendorf expansions
In this paper we classify the Zeckendorf expansions according to their digit blocks. It turns out that if we consider these digit blocks as labels on the Fibonacci tree, then the numbers ending with a given digit block in their Zeckendorf expansion appear as compound Wythoff sequences in a natural way on this tree. Here the digit blocks consisting of only $0$'s are an exception. We also give a second description of these occurrence sequences as generalized Beatty sequences. Finally, we characterize the numbers with a fixed digit block occurring at an arbitrary fixed position in their Zeckendorf expansions, and determine their densities.

Doubly random polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A two-step model for generating random polytopes is considered. For parameters $d$, $m$, and $p$, the first step is to generate a simple polytope $P$ whose facets are given by $m$ uniform random hyperplanes tangent to the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and the second step is to sample each vertex of $P$ independently with probability $p$ and let $Q$ be the convex hull of the sampled vertices. We establish results on how well $Q$ approximates the unit sphere in terms of $m$ and $p$ as well as asymptotics on the combinatorial complexity of $Q$ for certain regimes of $p$.

A BK inequality for random matchings
Let $G=(S,T,E)$ be a bipartite graph. For a matching $M$ of $G$, let $V(M)$ be the set of vertices covered by $M$, and let $B(M)$ be the symmetric difference of $V(M)$ and $S$. We prove that if $M$ is a uniform random matching of $G$, then $B(M)$ satisfies the BK inequality for increasing events.
The Look-and-Say The Biggest Sequence Eventually Cycles
In this paper we consider a variant of Conway's sequence (OEIS A005150, A006715) defined as follows: the next term in the sequence is obtained by considering contiguous runs of digits, and rewriting them as $ab$ where $b$ is the digit and $a$ is the maximum of $b$ and the run's length. We dub this the "look-and-say the biggest" (LSB) sequence. Conway's sequence is very similar ($b$ is just the run's length). For any starting value except 22, Conway's sequence grows exponentially: the ration of lengths converges to a known constant $λ$. We show that LSB does not: for every starting value, LSB eventually reaches a cycle. Furthermore, all cycles have a period of at most 9.

On the generating polynomials for the distribution of generalized binomial coefficients in discrete valuation domains
For a discrete valuation domain $V$ with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ such that the residue field $V/\mathfrak{m}$ is finite, there exists a sequence of polynomials $(F_n(x))_{n \ge 0}$ defined over the quotient field $K$ of $V$ that forms a basis of the $V$-module $\text{Int}(V) = \{f \in K[x] | f(V)\subseteq V\}$. This sequence of polynomials bears many resemblances to the classical binomial polynomials $(\binom{x}{n})_{n \ge 0}$. In this paper, we introduce a generating polynomial to account for the distribution of the $V$-values of the polynomials $F_n(x)$ modulo the maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$, and prove a result that provides a method for counting exactly how many $V$-values of the polynomials $(F_n(x))_{n \ge 0}$ fall into each of the residue classes modulo $\mathfrak{m}$. Our main theorem in this paper can be viewed as an analogue of the classical theorem of Garfield and Wilf in the context of discrete valuation domains.

The undirected repetition threshold and undirected pattern avoidance
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a rational number $r$ such that $1<r\leq 2$, an undirected $r$-power is a word of the form $xyx'$, where the word $x$ is nonempty, the word $x'$ is in $\{x,x^R\}$, and we have $|xyx'|/|xy|=r$. The undirected repetition threshold for $k$ letters, denoted $\mbox{URT}(k)$, is the infimum of the set of all $r$ such that undirected $r$-powers are avoidable on $k$ letters. We first demonstrate that $\mbox{URT}(3)=\tfrac{7}{4}$. Then we show that $\mbox{URT}(k)\geq \tfrac{k-1}{k-2}$ for all $k\geq 4$. We conjecture that $\mbox{URT}(k)=\tfrac{k-1}{k-2}$ for all $k\geq 4$, and we confirm this conjecture for $k\in\{4,5,\ldots,21\}.$ We then consider related problems in pattern avoidance; in particular, we find the undirected avoidability index of every binary pattern. This is an extended version of a paper presented at WORDS 2019, and it contains new and improved results.

An improved constant factor for the unit distance problem
We prove that the number of unit distances among $n$ planar points is at most $1.94\cdot n^{4/3}$, improving on the previous best bound of $8n^{4/3}$. We also give better upper and lower bounds for several small values of $n$. We also prove some variants of the crossing lemma and improve some constant factors.
