A Kruskal-Katona type result and applications
Published in Discrete Math. 343 (2020), no. 5, 111801, 12 pp • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by the Kruskal-Katona theorem a minimization problem is studied, where the role of the shadow is replaced by the image of the action of the monoid of increasing functions. One of our main results shows that compressed sets are a solution to this problem. Several applications to simplicial complexes are discussed.

Finding a Hamilton cycle fast on average using rotations and extensions
We present an algorithm CRE, which either finds a Hamilton cycle in a graph $G$ or determines that there is no such cycle in the graph. The algorithm's expected running time over input distribution $G\sim G(n,p)$ is $(1+o(1))n/p$, the optimal possible expected time, for $p=p(n) \geq 70n^{-\frac{1}{2}}$. This improves upon previous results on this problem due to Gurevich and Shelah, and to Thomason.

Bipartization of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A dominating set of a graph $G$ is a set $D\subseteq V_G$ such that every vertex in $V_G-D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $D$, and the domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. In this paper we provide a new characterization of bipartite graphs whose domination number is equal to the cardinality of its smaller partite set. Our characterization is based upon a new graph operation.
Generalized Igusa functions and ideal growth in nilpotent Lie rings
We introduce a new class of combinatorially defined rational functions and apply them to deduce explicit formulae for local ideal zeta functions associated to the members of a large class of nilpotent Lie rings which contains the free class-2-nilpotent Lie rings and is stable under direct products. Our results unify and generalize a substantial number of previous computations. We show that the new rational functions, and thus also the local zeta functions under consideration, enjoy a self-reciprocity property, expressed in terms of a functional equation upon inversion of variables. We establish a conjecture of Grunewald, Segal, and Smith on the uniformity of normal zeta functions of finitely generated free class-2-nilpotent groups.

Well-indumatched Trees and Graphs of Bounded Girth
A graph G is called well-indumatched if all of its maximal induced matchings have the same size. In this paper we characterize all well-indumatched trees. We provide a linear time algorithm to decide if a tree is well-indumatched or not. Then, we characterize minimal well-indumatched graphs of girth at least 9 and show subsequently that for an odd integer g greater than or equal to 9 and different from 11, there is no well-indumatched graph of girth g. On the other hand, there are infinitely many well-indumatched unicyclic graphs of girth k, where k is in {3, 5, 7} or k is an even integer greater than 2. We also show that, although the recognition of well-indumatched graphs is known to be co-NP-complete in general, one can recognize in polynomial time well-indumatched graphs where the size of maximal induced matchings is fixed.

Factorial Flagged Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the factorial flagged Grothendieck polynomials defined by flagged set-valued tableaux of Knutson-Miller-Yong can be expressed by a Jacobi-Trudi type determinant formula, generalizing the work of Hudson-Matsumura. In particular, we obtain an alternative proof of the tableau and determinant formulas of vexillary double Grothendieck polynomials, that have been obtained by Knutson-Miller-Yong and Hudson-Matsumura respectively. Moreover, we show that each factorial flagged Grothendieck polynomial can be obtained from a product of linear polynomials by applying K-theoretic divided difference operators.
Euler characteristics in the quantum $K$-theory of flag varieties
We prove that the sheaf Euler characteristic of the product of a Schubert class and an opposite Schubert class in the quantum $K$-theory ring of a (generalized) flag variety $G/P$ is equal to $q^d$, where $d$ is the smallest degree of a rational curve joining the two Schubert varieties. This implies that the sum of the structure constants of any product of Schubert classes is equal to 1. Along the way, we provide a description of the smallest degree $d$ in terms of its projections to flag varieties defined by maximal parabolic subgroups.

Characterizing 3-sets in Union-Closed Families
A family of sets is union-closed (UC) if the union of any two sets in the family is also in the family. Frankl's UC sets conjecture states that for any nonempty UC family $\mathcal{F} \subseteq 2^{[n]}$ such that $\mathcal{F} \neq \left\{\emptyset\right\}$, there exists an element $i \in [n]$ that is contained in at least half the sets of $\mathcal{F}$. The 3-sets conjecture of Morris states that the smallest number of distinct 3-sets (whose union is an $n$-set) that ensure Frankl's conjecture is satisfied for any UC family that contains them is $ \lfloor{n/2\rfloor} + 1$ for all $n \geq 4$. For an UC family $\mathcal{A} \subseteq 2^{[n]}$, Poonen's Theorem characterizes the existence of weights on $[n]$ which ensure all UC families that contain $\mathcal{A}$ satisfy Frankl's conjecture, however the determination of such weights for specific $\mathcal{A}$ is nontrivial even for small $n$. We classify families of 3-sets on $n \leq 9$ using a polyhedral interpretation of Poonen's Theorem and exact rational integer programming. This yields a proof of the 3-sets conjecture.

The language of self-avoiding walks
Let $X=(V\!X,E\!X)$ be an infinite, locally finite, connected graph without loops or multiple edges. We consider the edges to be oriented, and $E\!X$ is equipped with an involution which inverts the orientation. Each oriented edge is labelled by an element of a finite alphabet $\mathbfΣ$. The labelling is assumed to be deterministic: edges with the same initial (resp. terminal) vertex have distinct labels. Furthermore it is assumed that the group of label-preserving automorphisms of $X$ acts quasi-transitively. For any vertex $o$ of $X$, consider the language of all words over $\mathbfΣ$ which can be read along self-avoiding walks starting at $o$. We characterize under which conditions on the graph structure this language is regular or context-free. This is the case if and only if the graph has more than one end, and the size of all ends is $1$, or at most $2$, respectively.

Dimensional bounds for ancient caloric functions on graphs
We study ancient solutions of polynomial growth to heat equations on graphs, and extend Colding and Minicozzi's theorem [CM19] on manifolds to graphs: For a graph of polynomial volume growth, the dimension of the space of ancient solutions of polynomial growth is bounded by the product of the growth degree and the dimension of harmonic functions with the same growth.
Graphs derived from perfect difference sets
We study a family of graphs with diameter two and asymptotically optimal order for their maximum degree, obtained from perfect difference sets. We show that for all known examples of perfect difference sets, the graph we obtain is isomorphic to one of the Brown graphs, a well-known family of graphs in the degree-diameter problem.

Dominating maximal outerplane graphs and Hamiltonian plane triangulations
Let $G$ be a graph and $γ(G)$ denote the domination number of $G$, i.e. the cardinality of a smallest set of vertices $S$ such that every vertex of $G$ is either in $S$ or adjacent to a vertex in $S$. Matheson and Tarjan conjectured that a plane triangulation with a sufficiently large number $n$ of vertices has $γ(G)\le n/4$. Their conjecture remains unsettled. In the present paper, we show that: (1) a maximal outerplane graph with $n$ vertices has $γ(G)\le \lceil \frac{n+k} 4\rceil$ where $k$ is the number of pairs of consecutive degree 2 vertices separated by distance at least 3 on the boundary of $G$; and (2) a Hamiltonian plane triangulation $G$ with $n \ge 23$ vertices has $γ(G)\le 5n/16 $. We also point out and provide counterexamples for several recent published results of Li et al in [Discrete Appl. Math.198 (2016) 164-169] on this topic which are incorrect.

Longest paths in 2-edge-connected cubic graphs
We prove almost tight bounds on the length of paths in $2$-edge-connected cubic graphs. Concretely, we show that (i) every $2$-edge-connected cubic graph of size $n$ has a path of length $Ω\left(\frac{\log^2{n}}{\log{\log{n}}}\right)$, and (ii) there exists a $2$-edge-connected cubic graph, such that every path in the graph has length $O(\log^2{n})$.

The Inductive Graph Dimension from The Minimum Edge Clique Cover
In this paper we prove that the recursive (Knill) dimension of the join of two graphs has a simple formula in terms of the dimensions of the component graphs: $\mathrm{dim\,} (G_1+G_2) = 1 +\mathrm{dim\,} G_1+ \mathrm{dim\,} G_2$. We use this formula to derive an expression for the Knill dimension of a graph from its minimum clique cover. A corollary of the formula is that a graph made of the arbitrary union of complete graphs $K_N$ of the same order $N$ will have dimension $N-1$. We finish by finding lower and upper bounds on the Knill dimension of a graph in terms of its clique number.

Quantitative bounds in the nonlinear Roth theorem
We show that there exists $c>0$ such that any subset of $\{1, \dots, N\}$ of density at least $(\log\log{N})^{-c}$ contains a nontrivial progression of the form $x,x+y,x+y^2$. This is the first quantitatively effective version of the Bergelson--Leibman polynomial Szemerédi theorem for a progression involving polynomials of differing degrees. Our key innovation is an inverse theorem characterising sets for which the number of configurations $x,x+y,x+y^2$ deviates substantially from the expected value. In proving this, we develop the first effective instance of a concatenation theorem of Tao and Ziegler, with polynomial bounds.

Size and structure of large $(s,t)$-union intersecting families
A family $\F$ of sets is said to be intersecting if any two sets in $\F$ have nonempty intersection. The celebrated Erd{\H o}s-Ko-Rado theorem determines the size and structure of the largest intersecting family of $k$-sets on an $n$-set $X$. An $(s,t)$-union intersecting family is a family of $k$-sets on an $n$-set $X$ such that for any $A_1,\ldots,A_{s+t}$ in this family, $\left(\cup_{i=1}^sA_i\right)\cap\left(\cup_{i=1}^t A_{i+s}\right)\neq \varnothing.$ Let $\ell(\F)$ be the minimum number of sets in $\F$ such that by removing them the resulting subfamily is intersecting. In this paper, for sufficiently large $n$, we characterize the size and structure of $(s,t)$-union intersecting families with maximum possible size and $\ell(\F)\geq s+β$. This allows us to find out the size and structure of some large and maximal $(s,t)$-union intersecting families. Our results are nontrivial extensions of some recent generalizations of the Erd{\H o}s-Ko-Rado theorem such as the Han and Kohayakawa theorem 2017 which finds the structure of the third largest intersecting family, the Kostochka and Mubayi theorem 2017, and the more recent Kupavskii's theorem 2018 whose both results determine the size and structure of the $i$th largest intersecting family of $k$-sets for $i\leq k+1$. In particular, we prove that a Hilton-Milner-type stability theorem holds for $(1,t)$-union intersecting families, that indeed, confirms a conjecture of Alishahi and Taherkhani 2018. We extend our results to $K_{s_1,\ldots,s_{r+1}}$-free subgraphs of Kneser graphs. In fact, when $n$ is sufficiently large, we characterize the size and structure of large and maximal $K_{s_1,\ldots,s_{r+1}}$-free subgraphs of Kneser graphs. In particular, when $s_1=\cdots=s_{r+1}=1$ our result provides some stability results related to the famous Erd{\H o}s matching conjecture.

New Short Proofs to Some Stability Theorems
We present new short proofs to both the exact and the stability results of two extremal problems. The first one is the extension of Turán's theorem in hypergraphs, which was firstly studied by Mubayi $\cite{MU06}$. The second one is about the cancellative hypergraphs, which was firstly studied by Bollobás $\cite{BO74}$ and later by Keevash and Mubayi $\cite{KM04}$. Our proofs are concise and straightforward, but give a sharper version of stability theorems to both problems.
