On the Density of $C_7$-Critical Graphs
In 1959, Grötzsch famously proved that every planar graph of girth at least 4 is 3-colourable (or equivalently, admits a homomorphism to $C_3$). A natural generalization of this is the following conjecture: for every positive integer $t$, every planar graph of girth at least $4t$ admits a homomorphism to $C_{2t+1}$. This is in fact the planar dual of a well-known conjecture of Jaeger which states that every $4t$-edge-connected graph admits a modulo $(2t+1)$-orientation. Though Jaeger's original conjecture was disproved in 2018 by Han et al., Lovasz et al. showed that every $6t$-edge connected graph admits a modulo $(2t+1)$-flow. The latter result implies that every planar graph of girth at least $6t$ admits a homomorphism to $C_{2t+1}$. We improve upon this in the $t=3$ case, by showing that every planar graph of girth at least $16$ admits a homomorphism to $C_7$. We obtain this through a more general result regarding the density of $C_7$-critical graphs: if $G$ is a $C_7$-critical graph with $G \not \in \{C_3, C_5\}$, then $e(G) \geq \tfrac{17v(G)-2}{15}$.

The Large genus asymptotic expansion of Masur-Veech volumes
We study the asymptotic behavior of Masur-Veech volumes as the genus goes to infinity. We show the existence of a complete asymptotic expansion of these volumes that depends only on the genus and the number of singularities. The computation of the first term of this asymptotics expansion was a long standing problem. This problem was recently solved in by Aggarwal using purely combinatorial arguments, and then by D. Chen, M. Moeller, D. Zagier and the author using algebro-geometric insights. Our proof relies on a combination of both methods.

$D$-Magic Strongly Regular Graphs
For a set of distances $D$, a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is said to be $D$-magic if there exists a bijection $f:V\rightarrow \{1,2, \ldots , n\}$ and a constant $k$ such that for any vertex $x$, $\sum_{y\in N_D(x)} f(y) = k$, where $N_D(x)=\{y|d(x,y)=i, i\in D\}$ is the $D$-neighbourhood set of $x$. In this paper we utilize spectra of graphs to characterize strongly regular graphs which are $D$-magic, for all possible distance sets $D$. In addition, we provide necessary conditions for distance regular graphs of diameter 3 to be $\{1\}$-magic.
Partitioning edge-coloured hypergraphs into few monochromatic tight cycles
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 34 (2020), no. 2, 1460-1471 • View Publication • BIB
Confirming a conjecture of Gyárfás, we prove that, for all natural numbers $k$ and $r$, the vertices of every $r$-edge-coloured complete $k$-uniform hypergraph can be partitioned into a bounded number (independent of the size of the hypergraph) of monochromatic tight cycles. We further prove that, for for all natural numbers $p$ and $r$, the vertices of every $r$-edge-coloured complete graph can be partitioned into a bounded number of $p$-th powers of cycles, settling a problem of Elekes, Soukup, Soukup and Szentmiklóssy. In fact we prove a common generalisation of both theorems which further extends these results to all host hypergraphs of bounded independence number.
The Iterated Local Model for Social Networks
On-line social networks, such as in Facebook and Twitter, are often studied from the perspective of friendship ties between agents in the network. Adversarial ties, however, also play an important role in the structure and function of social networks, but are often hidden. Underlying generative mechanisms of social networks are predicted by structural balance theory, which postulates that triads of agents, prefer to be transitive, where friends of friends are more likely friends, or anti-transitive, where adversaries of adversaries become friends. The previously proposed Iterated Local Transitivity (ILT) and Iterated Local Anti-Transitivity (ILAT) models incorporated transitivity and anti-transitivity, respectively, as evolutionary mechanisms. These models resulted in graphs with many observable properties of social networks, such as low diameter, high clustering, and densification. We propose a new, generative model, referred to as the Iterated Local Model (ILM) for social networks synthesizing both transitive and anti-transitive triads over time. In ILM, we are given a countably infinite binary sequence as input, and that sequence determines whether we apply a transitive or an anti-transitive step. The resulting model exhibits many properties of complex networks observed in the ILT and ILAT models. In particular, for any input binary sequence, we show that asymptotically the model generates finite graphs that densify, have clustering coefficient bounded away from 0, have diameter at most 3, and exhibit bad spectral expansion. We also give a thorough analysis of the chromatic number, domination number, Hamiltonicity, and isomorphism types of induced subgraphs of ILM graphs.

Minimal separators in graph classes defined by small forbidden induced subgraphs
Minimal separators in graphs are an important concept in algorithmic graph theory. In particular, many problems that are NP-hard for general graphs are known to become polynomial-time solvable for classes of graphs with a polynomially bounded number of minimal separators. Several well-known graph classes have this property, including chordal graphs, permutation graphs, circular-arc graphs, and circle graphs. We perform a systematic study of the question which classes of graphs defined by small forbidden induced subgraphs have a polynomially bounded number of minimal separators. We focus on sets of forbidden induced subgraphs with at most four vertices and obtain an almost complete dichotomy, leaving open only two cases.

Edge colorings of graphs without monochromatic stars
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we improve on results of Hoppen, Kohayakawa and Lefmann about the maximum number of edge colorings without monochromatic copies of a star of a fixed size that a graph on $n$ vertices may admit. Our results rely on an improved application of an entropy inequality of Shearer.

The normalized distance Laplacian
The distance matrix $\mathcal{D}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The transmission of a vertex $v_i$ in $G$ is the sum of the distances from $v_i$ to all other vertices and $T(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of transmissions of the vertices of the graph. The normalized distance Laplacian, $\mathcal{D}^{\mathcal {L}}(G)=I-T(G)^{-1/2}\mathcal{D}(G) T(G)^{-1/2}$, is introduced. This is analogous to the normalized Laplacian matrix, $\mathcal{L}(G)=I-D(G)^{-1/2}A(G)D(G)^{-1/2}$, where $D(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of degrees of the vertices of the graph and $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix. Bounds on the spectral radius of $\mathcal{D}^{\mathcal {L}}$ and connections with the normalized Laplacian matrix are presented. Twin vertices are used to determine eigenvalues of the normalized distance Laplacian. The generalized distance characteristic polynomial is defined and its properties discussed. Finally, $\mathcal{D}^{\mathcal {L}}$-cospectrality is studied for all graphs on 10 and fewer vertices, providing evidence that the normalized distance Laplacian has fewer cospectral pairs than other matrices.

Extension theorems for Hamming varieties over finite fields
We study the finite field extension estimates for Hamming varieties $H_j, j\in \mathbb F_q^*,$ defined by $H_j=\{x\in \mathbb F_q^d: \prod_{k=1}^d x_k=j\},$ where $\mathbb F_q^d$ denotes the $d$-dimensional vector space over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q$ elements. We show that although the maximal Fourier decay bound on $H_j$ away from the origin is not good, the Stein-Tomas $L^2\to L^r$ extension estimate for $H_j$ holds.

Asymptotic Density of Graphs Excluding Disconnected Minors
For a graph $H$, let $$c_{\infty}(H)= \lim_{n \to \infty}\max\frac{|E(G)|}{n},$$ where the maximum is taken over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices not containing $H$ as a minor. Thus $c_{\infty}(H)$ is the asymptotic maximum density of graphs not containing $H$ as a minor. Employing a structural lemma due to Eppstein, we prove new upper bounds on $c_{\infty}(H)$ for disconnected graphs $H$. In particular, we determine $c_{\infty}(H)$ whenever $H$ is union of cycles. Finally, we investigate the behaviour of $c_\infty(sK_r)$ for fixed $r$, where $sK_r$ denotes the union of $s$ disjoint copies of the complete graph on $r$ vertices. Improving on a result of Thomason, we show that $$c_\infty(sK_r)=s(r-1)-1 \mathrm{\; for \;} s =Ω\left(\frac{\log{r}}{\log\log{r}}\right),$$ and $$c_\infty(sK_r)>s(r-1)-1 \mathrm{\; for \;} s ={o}\left(\frac{\log{r}}{\log\log{r}}\right).$$

LLT polynomials, elementary symmetric functions and melting lollipops
Published in J. Algebr. Comb (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We conjecture an explicit positive combinatorial formula for the expansion of unicellular LLT polynomials in the elementary symmetric basis. This is an analogue of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture and previously studied by Panova and the author in 2018. We show that the conjecture for unicellular LLT polynomials implies a similar formula for vertical-strip LLT polynomials. We prove positivity in the elementary basis in for the class of graphs called `melting lollipops' previously considered by Huh, Nam and Yoo. This is done by proving a curious relationship between a generalization of charge and orientations of unit-interval graphs. We also provide short bijective proofs of Lee's three-term recurrences for unicellular LLT polynomials and we show that these recurrences are enough to generate all unicellular LLT polynomials associated with abelian area sequences.

Moser Polynomials and Eulerian Numbers
Article presents a short investigation into some properties of the Moser polynomials which appear in various problems from algebraic combinatorics. For instance, these polynomials can be used to solve the Generalized Moser's Problem on multiset recovery: Can a collection (multiset) of $n$ numbers can be uniquely restored given the collection of its $s$-sums? We prove some explicit formulas showing relationships between Moser polynomials and such popular algebraic combinatorial sequences as Eulerian and Stirling numbers.

A Detailed Analysis of Quicksort Running Time
One of the greatest algorithms of all time is Quicksort. Its average running time is famously O(nlog(n)), and its variance, less famously, is O(n^2) (hence its standard deviation is O(n)). But what about higher moments? Here we find explicit expressions for the first eight moments, their scaled limits, and we describe how to compute, approximately (but very accurately), percentiles of running time for any list-length

Some congruences related to a congruence of Van Hamme
We establish some supercongruences related to a supercongruence of Van Hamme, such as \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{(p+1)/2} (-1)^k (4k-1)\frac{(-\frac{1}{2})_k^3}{k!^3} &\equiv p(-1)^{(p+1)/2}+p^3(2-E_{p-3})\pmod{p^{4}},\\ \sum_{k=0}^{(p+1)/2} (4k-1)^5 \frac{(-\frac{1}{2})_k^4}{k!^4} &\equiv 16p\pmod{p^{4}}, \end{align*} where $p$ is an odd prime and $E_{p-3}$ is the $(p-3)$-th Euler number. Our proof uses some congruences of Z.-W. Sun, the Wilf--Zeilberger method, Whipple's $_7F_6$ transformation, and the software package {\tt Sigma} developed by Schneider. We also put forward two related conjectures.

Equality cases for a bound on the chromatic number
It is known that the inequality $$ \frac{χ(G)(χ(G)-1)}{2} + |V| - χ(G) \leq |E|$$ holds for all connected graphs, where $χ(G)$ denotes the chromatic number of $G$. We prove that equality holds whenever the graph consists of a complete graph or an odd cycle, together with finitely many trees attached to its vertices.

On rich and poor directions determined by a subset of a finite plane
We generalize to sets with cardinality more than $p$ a theorem of Rédei and Szőnyi on the number of directions determined by a subset $U$ of the finite plane $\mathbb F_p^2$. A $U$-rich line is a line that meets $U$ in at least $\#U/p+1$ points, while a $U$-poor line is one that meets $U$ in at most $\#U/p-1$ points. The slopes of the $U$-rich and $U$-poor lines are called $U$-special directions. We show that either $U$ is contained in the union of $n=\lceil\#U/p\rceil$ lines, or it determines `many' $U$-special directions. The core of our proof is a version of the polynomial method in which we study iterated partial derivatives of the Rédei polynomial to take into account the `multiplicity' of the directions determined by $U$.

Some extremal results on K_{s,t}-free graphs
For graphs $H$ and $F$, let $\text{ex}(n,H,F)$ be the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. The study of this function, which generalizes the well-known Turán number of graphs, was systematically studied by Alon and Shikhelman recently. In this paper, we show that for any $m$ and $t\ge 2m-3\ge3$, \[\text{ex}(n,K_{m},K_{2,t})=Θ(n^{\frac{3}{2}}).\] This result improves some results of Alon and Shikhelman (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 121:146-172, 2016). We also study the $k$-partite $K_{s,t}$-free graph, we show that for any $k\ge3$ and $t\ge(k-1)(s-1)!+1$, \[\text{ex}_{χ\le k}(n,K_{s,t})\ge\frac{k-1}{2k}n^{2-1/s}+o(n^{2-1/s}).\] Moreover, we give a new construction of $3$-partite $K_{2,2t+1}$-free graphs with many edges.

Candidate for the crystal $B(-\infty)$ for the queer Lie superalgebra
Published in Kyoto J. Math. 62, no. 2 (2022), 377-401 • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that the direct limit of the semistandard decomposition tableau model for polynomial representations of the queer Lie superalgebra exists, which is believed to be the crystal for the upper half of the corresponding quantum group. An extension of this model to describe the direct limit combinatorially is given. Furthermore, it is shown that the polynomial representations may be recovered from the limit in most cases.
