On the Non-Commuting Graph of Dihedral Group
For a nonabelian group G, the non-commuting graph $Γ_G$ of $G$ is defined as the graph with vertex set $G-Z(G)$, where $Z(G)$ is the center of $G$, and two distinct vertices of $Γ_G$ are adjacent if they do not commute in $G$. In this paper, we investigate the detour index, eccentric connectivity and total eccentricity polynomials of non-commuting graph on $D_{2n}$. We also find the mean distance of non-commuting graph on $D_{2n}$.

Polynomial to exponential transition in Ramsey theory

Given $s \ge k\ge 3$, let $h^{(k)}(s)$ be the minimum $t$ such that there exist arbitrarily large $k$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ whose independence number is at most polylogarithmic in the number of vertices and in which every $s$ vertices span at most $t$ edges. Erd\H os and Hajnal conjectured (1972) that $h^{(k)}(s)$ can be calculated precisely using a recursive formula and Erd\H os offered \$500 for a proof of this. For $k=3$ this has been settled for many values of $s$ including powers of three but it was not known for any $k\geq 4$ and $s\geq k+2$. Here we settle the conjecture for all $s \ge k \ge 4$. We also answer a question of Bhat and Rödl by constructing, for each $k \ge 4$, a quasirandom sequence of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with positive density and upper density at most $k!/(k^k-k)$. This result is sharp.

From Schritte and Wechsel to Coxeter Groups

The PLR-moves of neo-Riemannian theory, when considered as reflections on the edges of an equilateral triangle, define the Coxeter group $\widetilde S_3$. The elements are in a natural one-to-one correspondence with the triangles in the infinite Tonnetz. The left action of $\widetilde S_3$ on the Tonnetz gives rise to interesting chord sequences. We compare the system of transformations in $\widetilde S_3$ with the system of Schritte and Wechsel introduced by Hugo Riemann in 1880. Finally, we consider the point reflection group as it captures well the transition from Riemann's infinite Tonnetz to the finite Tonnetz of neo-Riemannian theory.

An Exponential Lower Bound on the Sub-Packetization of MSR Codes
An $(n,k,\ell)$-vector MDS code is a $\mathbb{F}$-linear subspace of $(\mathbb{F}^\ell)^n$ (for some field $\mathbb{F}$) of dimension $k\ell$, such that any $k$ (vector) symbols of the codeword suffice to determine the remaining $r=n-k$ (vector) symbols. The length $\ell$ of each codeword symbol is called the sub-packetization of the code. Such a code is called minimum storage regenerating (MSR), if any single symbol of a codeword can be recovered by downloading $\ell/r$ field elements (which is known to be the least possible) from each of the other symbols. MSR codes are attractive for use in distributed storage systems, and by now a variety of ingenious constructions of MSR codes are available. However, they all suffer from exponentially large sub-packetization $\ell \gtrsim r^{k/r}$. Our main result is an almost tight lower bound showing that for an MSR code, one must have $\ell \ge \exp(Ω(k/r))$. This settles a central open question concerning MSR codes that has received much attention. Previously, a lower bound of $\approx \exp(\sqrt{k/r})$, and a tight lower bound for a restricted class of "optimal access" MSR codes, were known.

Deep Holes of Projective Reed-Solomon Codes
Projective Reed-Solomon (PRS) codes are Reed-Solomon codes of the maximum possible length q+1. The classification of deep holes --received words with maximum possible error distance-- for PRS codes is an important and difficult problem. In this paper, we use algebraic methods to explicitly construct three classes of deep holes for PRS codes. We show that these three classes completely classify all deep holes of PRS codes with redundancy at most four. Previously, the deep hole classification was only known for PRS codes with redundancy at most three in work arXiv:1612.05447

A survey of graphs with known or bounded crossing numbers
We present, to the best of the authors' knowledge, all known results for the (planar) crossing numbers of specific graphs and graph families. The results are separated into various categories; specifically, results for general graph families, results for graphs arising from various graph products, and results for recursive graph constructions.

Upper bounds on the sizes of variable strength covering arrays using the Lovász local lemma
Covering arrays are generalizations of orthogonal arrays that have been widely studied and are used in software testing. The probabilistic method has been employed to derive upper bounds on the sizes of minimum covering arrays and give asymptotic upper bounds that are logarithmic on the number of columns of the array. This corresponds to test suites with a desired level of coverage of the parameter space where we guarantee the number of test cases is logarithmic on the number of parameters of the system. In this paper, we study variable strength covering arrays, a generalization of covering arrays that uses a hypergraph to specify the sets of columns where coverage is required; (standard) covering arrays is the special case where coverage is required for all sets of columns of a fixed size $t$, its strength. We use the probabilistic method to obtain upper bounds on the number of rows of a variable strength covering array, given in terms of parameters of the hypergraph. We then compare this upper bound with another one given by a density-based greedy algorithm on different types of hypergraph such as $t$-designs, cyclic consecutive hypergraphs, planar triangulation hypergraphs, and a more specific hypergraph given by a clique of higher strength on top of a "base strength". The conclusions are dependent on the class of hypergraph, and we discuss specific characteristics of the hypergraphs which are more amenable to using different versions of the Lovász local lemma.

Signed magic rectangles with two filled cells in each column
A signed magic rectangle $SMR(m,n;r, s)$ is an $m \times n$ array with entries from $X$, where $X=\{0,\pm1,\pm2,\ldots, $ $\pm (ms-1)/2\}$ if $mr$ is odd and $X = \{\pm1,\pm2,\ldots,\pm mr/2\}$ if $mr$ is even, such that precisely $r$ cells in every row and $s$ cells in every column are filled, every integer from set $X$ appears exactly once in the array and the sum of each row and of each column is zero. In this paper we prove that a signed magic rectangle $SMR(m,n;r, 2)$ exists if and only if either $m=2$ and $n=r\equiv 0,3 \pmod 4$ or $m,r\geq 3$ and $mr=2n$.

Complete intersection Calabi--Yau threefolds in Hibi toric varieties and their smoothing
In this article, we summarize combinatorial description of complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds in Hibi toric varieties. Such Calabi-Yau threefolds have at worst conifold singularities, and are often smoothable to non-singular Calabi-Yau threefolds. We focus on such non-singular Calabi-Yau threefolds of Picard number one, and illustrate the calculation of topological invariants, using new motivating examples.

Set-Codes with Small Intersections and Small Discrepancies
We are concerned with the problem of designing large families of subsets over a common labeled ground set that have small pairwise intersections and the property that the maximum discrepancy of the label values within each of the sets is less than or equal to one. Our results, based on transversal designs, factorizations of packings and Latin rectangles, show that by jointly constructing the sets and labeling scheme, one can achieve optimal family sizes for many parameter choices. Probabilistic arguments akin to those used for pseudorandom generators lead to significantly suboptimal results when compared to the proposed combinatorial methods. The design problem considered is motivated by applications in molecular data storage and theoretical computer science.

Some Linear Recurrences Motivated by Stern's Diatomic Array
We define a triangular array closely related to Stern's diatomic array and show that for a fixed integer $r\geq 1$, the sum $u_r(n)$ of the $r$th powers of the entries in row $n$ satisfy a linear recurrence with constant coefficients. The proof technique yields a vast generalization. In certain cases we can be more explicit about the resulting linear recurrence.
On Extremal Graphs of Weighted Szeged Index
An extension of the well-known Szeged index was introduced recently, named as weighted Szeged index ($\textrm{sz}(G)$). This paper is devoted to characterizing the extremal trees and graphs of this new topological invariant. In particular, we proved that the star is a tree having the maximal $\textrm{sz}(G)$. Finding a tree with the minimal $\textrm{sz}(G)$ is not an easy task to be done. Here, we present the minimal trees up to 25 vertices obtained by computer and describe the regularities which retain in them. Our preliminary computer tests suggest that a tree with the minimal $\textrm{sz}(G)$ is also the connected graph of the given order that attains the minimal weighted Szeged index. Additionally, it is proven that among the bipartite connected graphs the complete balanced bipartite graph $K_{\left\lfloor n/2\right\rfloor\left\lceil n/2 \right\rceil}$ attains the maximal $\textrm{sz}(G)$\,. We believe that the $K_{\left\lfloor n/2\right\rfloor\left\lceil n/2 \right\rceil}$ is a connected graph of given order that attains the maximum $\textrm{sz}(G)$.

Star-critical Ramsey numbers for cycles versus the complete graph on 5 vertices
Let $G$, $H$ and $K$ represent three graphs without loops or parallel edges and $n$ represent an integer. Given any red blue coloring of the edges of $G$, we say that $K \rightarrow (G,H)$, if there exists red copy of $G$ in $K$ or a blue copy of $H$ in $K$. Let $K_n$ represent a complete graph on $n$ vertices, $C_n$ a cycle on $n$ vertices and $S_n=K_{1,n}$ a star on $n+1$ vertices. The Ramsey number $r(G, H)$ is defined as $\min\{n \mid K_n\rightarrow (G,H)\}$. Likewise, the star-critical Ramsey number $r_*(H, G)$ is defined $\min\{k \mid K_{r(G,H)-1} \sqcup K_{1,k} \rightarrow (H, G) \}$. When $n >3$, in this paper we show that $r_*(C_n,K_5)=3n-1$ except $r_*(C_4,K_5)=13$. We also characterize all Ramsey critical $r(C_n,K_5)$ graphs.

An upper bound on the number of perfect quadratic forms
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a recent preprint on arXiv Roland Bacher showed that the number $p_d$ of non-similar perfect $d$-dimensional quadratic forms satisfies $e^{Ω(d)} < p_d < e^{O(d^3\log(d))}$. We improve the upper bound to $e^{O(d^2\log(d))}$ by a volumetric argument based on Voronoi's first reduction theory.
Semi-Grundy function, an hereditary approach to Grundy function
Grundy functions have found many applications in a wide variety of games, in solving relevant problems in Game Theory. Many authors have been working on this topic for over many years. Since the existence of a Grundy function on a digraph implies that it must have a kernel, the problem of deciding if a digraph has a Grundy function is NP-complete, and how to calculate one is not clearly answered. In this paper, we introduce the concept: Semi-Grundy function, which arises naturally from the connection between kernel and semi-kernel and the connection between kernel and Grundy function. We explore the relationship of this concept with the Grundy function, proving that for digraphs with a defining hereditary property is sufficient to get a semi-grundy function to obtain a Grundy function. Then we prove sufficient and necessary conditions for some products of digraphs to have a semi-Grundy function. Also, it is shown a relationship between the size of the semi-Grundy function obtained for the Cartesian Product and the size of the semi-Grundy functions of the factors. This size is an upper bound of the chromatic number. We present a family of digraphs with the following property: for each natural number $n\geq 2$, there is a digraph $R_n$ that has two Grundy functions such that the difference between their maximum values is equal to n. Then it is important to have bounds for the Grundy or semi-Grundy functions.

Linear inequalities in primes
In this paper we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions in prime numbers to systems of simultaneous linear inequalities with algebraic coefficients. For $m$ simultaneous inequalities we require at least $m+2$ variables, improving upon existing methods, which generically require at least $2m+1$ variables. Our result also generalises the theorem of Green-Tao-Ziegler on linear equations in primes. Many of the methods presented apply for arbitrary coefficients, not just for algebraic coefficients, and we formulate a conjecture concerning the pseudorandomness of sieve weights which, if resolved, would remove the algebraicity assumption entirely.
Introducing Fairness and Diversification in WTA and ATP Tennis Tournaments Generation
Published in Ann Oper Res (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Single-elimination tournaments are the standard paradigm both for the main tennis professional associations. Schedules are generated by allocating first seeded and then unseeded players with seeds prevented from encountering each other early in the competition. Besides, the distribution of pairings in the first round between unseeded players and seeds for a yearly season may be strongly unbalanced. This provides often a great disadvantage to some "unlucky" unseeded players in terms of money prizes. Also, a fair distribution of matches during a season would benefit from limiting in first rounds the presence of Head-to-Head (H2H) matches between players that met in the recent past. We propose a tournament generation approach in order to reduce in the first round "unlucky" pairings and replay of H2H matches. The approach consists in a clustering optimization problem inducing a consequent draw within each cluster. A Non-Linear Mathematical Programming (NLMP) model is proposed for the clustering problem so as to reach a fair schedule. The solution reached by a commercial NLMP solver on the model is compared to the one reached by a faster hybrid algorithm based on multi-start local search. The approach is successfully tested on historical records from the recent Grand Slams tournaments.

The $cd$-Index: A Survey
This is a survey of the $cd$-index of Eulerian partially ordered sets. The $cd$-index is an encoding of the numbers of chains, specified by ranks, in the poset. It is the most efficient such encoding, incorporating all the affine relations on the flag numbers of Eulerian posets. Eulerian posets include the face posets of regular CW spheres (in particular, of convex polytopes), intervals in the Bruhat order on Coxeter groups, and the lattices of regions of oriented matroids. The paper discusses inequalities on the $cd$-index, connections with other combinatorial parameters, computation, and algebraic approaches.

Deformed Fourier matrices in bistochastic form
Many interesting examples of complex Hadamard matrices $H\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ can be put, up to the standard equivalence relation for such matrices, in bistochastic form. We discuss here this phenomenon, with a number of computations for some of the most basic such matrices, namely the deformations of the Fourier matrix $F_N\in M_N(\mathbb C)$.

Existence of cube terms in finite algebras
We study the problem of whether a given finite algebra with finitely many basic operations contains a cube term; we give both structural and algorithmic results. We show that if such an algebra has a cube term then it has a cube term of dimension at most $N$, where the number $N$ depends on the arities of basic operations of the algebra and the size of the basic set. For finite idempotent algebras we give a tight bound on $N$ that, in the special case of algebras with more than $\binom{|A|}2$ basic operations, improves an earlier result of K. Kearnes and A. Szendrei. On the algorithmic side, we show that deciding the existence of cube terms is in P for idempotent algebras and in EXPTIME in general. Since an algebra contains a $k$-ary near unanimity operation if and only if it contains a $k$-dimensional cube term and generates a congruence distributive variety, our algorithm also lets us decide whether a given finite algebra has a near unanimity operation.
