On Distance Magic Harary Graphs
Published in Utilitas Mathematica, Vol. 115, 251-266, 2020 • Search Publication
This paper establishes two techniques to construct larger distance magic and (a, d)-distance antimagic graphs using Harary graphs and provides a solution to the existence of distance magicness of legicographic product and direct product of G with C4, for every non-regular distance magic graph G with maximum degree |V(G)|-1.

On Permutation Weights and $q$-Eulerian Polynomials
Published in Ann. Comb. 24, 363-378 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Weights of permutations were originally introduced by Dugan, Glennon, Gunnells, and Steingrímsson (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 164:24-49, 2019) in their study of the combinatorics of tiered trees. Given a permutation $σ$ viewed as a sequence of integers, computing the weight of $σ$ involves recursively counting descents of certain subpermutations of $σ$. Using this weight function, one can define a $q$-analog $E_n(x,q)$ of the Eulerian polynomials. We prove two main results regarding weights of permutations and the polynomials $E_n(x,q)$. First, we show that the coefficients of $E_n(x, q)$ stabilize as $n$ goes to infinity, which was conjectured by Dugan, Glennon, Gunnells, and Steingrímsson (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 164:24-49, 2019), and enables the definition of the formal power series $W_d(t)$, which has interesting combinatorial properties. Second, we derive a recurrence relation for $E_n(x, q)$, similar to the known recurrence for the classical Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x)$. Finally, we give a recursive formula for the numbers of certain integer partitions and, from this, conjecture a recursive formula for the stabilized coefficients mentioned above.

A new Fibonacci identity and its associated summation identities
We derive a new Fibonacci identity. This single identity subsumes important known identities such as those of Catalan, Ruggles, Halton and others, as well as standard general identities found in the books by Vajda, Koshy and others. We also derive several binomial and ordinary summation identities arising from this identity; in particular we obtain a generalization of Halton's general Fibonacci identity.

General Equitable Decompositions for Graphs with Symmetries
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using the theory of equitable decompositions it is possible to decompose a matrix $M$ appropriately associated with a given graph. The result is a collection of smaller matrices whose collective eigenvalues are the same as the eigenvalues of the original matrix $M$. This is done by decomposing the matrix over a graph symmetry. Previously it was shown that a matrix can be equitably decomposed over any uniform, basic, or separable automorphism. Here we extend this theory to show that it is possible to equitably decompose a matrix over any automorphism of a graph, without restriction. Moreover, we give a step-by-step procedure which can be used to generate such a decomposition. We also prove under mild conditions that if a matrix $M$ is equitably decomposed the resulting divisor matrix, which is the divisor matrix of the associated equitable partition, will have the same spectral radius as the original matrix $M$.

The Kirchhoff Index of Enhanced Hypercubes
Let $\{e_{1},\ldots,e_{n}\}$ be the standard basis of abelian group $Z_{2}^{n}$, which can be also viewed as a linear space of dimension $n$ over the Galois filed $F_{2}$, and $ε_{k}=e_k+e_{k+1}+\cdots+e_n$ for some $1\le k\le n-1$. It is well known that the so called enhanced hypercube $Q_{n, k}(1\le k \le n-1)$ is just the Cayley graph $Cay(Z_{2}^{n},S)$ where $S=\{e_{1},\ldots, e_{n},ε_{k}\}$. In this paper, we obtain the spectrum of $Q_{n, k}$, from which we give an exact formula of the Kirchhoff index of the enhanced hypercube $Q_{n, k}$. Furthermore, we prove that, for a given $n$, $Kf(Q_{n, k})$ is increased with the increase of $k$. Finally, we get $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}\frac{Kf(Q_{n, k})}{\frac{2^{2n}}{n+1}}=1$.

On generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constants of $C_n^r$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group with exponent $\exp(G)=m$. For any positive integer $k$, the $k$-th generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant $\mathsf s_{km}(G)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $t$ such that every sequence $S$ in $G$ of length at least $t$ has a zero-sum subsequence of length $km$. It is easy to see that $\mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^r)\ge(k+r)n-r$ where $n,r\in\mathbb N$. Kubertin conjectured that the equality holds for any $k\ge r$. In this paper, we mainly prove the following results: (1) For every positive integer $k\ge 6$, we have $$\mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^3)=(k+3)n+O(\frac{n}{\ln n}).$$ (2) For every positive integer $k\ge 18$, we have $$\mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^4)=(k+4)n+O(\frac{n}{\ln n}).$$ (3) For $n\in \mathbb N$, assume that the largest prime power divisor of $n$ is $p^a$ for some $a\in\mathbb N$. For any fixed $r\ge 5$, if $p^t\ge r$ for some $t\in\mathbb N$, then for any $k\in\mathbb N$ we have $$\mathsf s_{kp^tn}(C_n^r)\le(kp^t+r)n+c_r\frac{n}{\ln n},$$ where $c_r$ is a constant depends on $r$. Note that the main terms in our results are consistent with the conjectural values proposed by Kubertin.

On the abelian complexity of generalized Thue-Morse sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the abelian complexity $ρ_n^{ab}(\mathbf{t}^{(k)})$ of generalized Thue-Morse sequences $\mathbf{t}^{(k)}$. We obtain the exact value of $ρ_n^{ab}(\mathbf{t}^{(k)})$ for every integer $n\geq k$. Consequently, $ρ_n^{ab}(\mathbf{t}^{(k)})$ is ultimately periodic with the period $k$. Moreover, we show that the abelian complexities of a class of infinite sequences are $k$-automatic.

Towards a symbolic summation theory for unspecified sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
The article addresses the problem whether indefinite double sums involving a generic sequence can be simplified in terms of indefinite single sums. Depending on the structure of the double sum, the proposed summation machinery may provide such a simplification without exceptions. If it fails, it may suggest a more advanced simplification introducing in addition a single nested sum where the summand has to satisfy a particular constraint. More precisely, an explicitly given parameterized telescoping equation must hold. Restricting to the case that the arising unspecified sequences are specialized to the class of indefinite nested sums defined over hypergeometric, multi-basic or mixed hypergeometric products, it can be shown that this constraint is not only sufficient but also necessary.

Optimal strategies for patrolling fences
A classical multi-agent fence patrolling problem asks: What is the maximum length $L$ of a line that $k$ agents with maximum speeds $v_1,\ldots,v_k$ can patrol if each point on the line needs to be visited at least once every unit of time. It is easy to see that $L = α\sum_{i=1}^k v_i$ for some efficiency $α\in [\frac{1}{2},1)$. After a series of works giving better and better efficiencies, it was conjectured that the best possible efficiency approaches $\frac{2}{3}$. No upper bounds on the efficiency below $1$ were known. We prove the first such upper bounds and tightly bound the optimal efficiency in terms of the minimum ratio of speeds $s = {v_{\max}}/{v_{\min}}$ and the number of agents $k$. Guided by our upper bounds, we construct a scheme whose efficiency approaches $1$, disproving the conjecture of Kawamura and Soejima. Our scheme asymptotically matches our upper bounds in terms of the maximal speed difference and the number of agents used, proving them to be asymptotically tight. A variation of the fence patrolling problem considers a circular fence instead and asks for its circumference to be maximized. We consider the unidirectional case of this variation, where all agents are only allowed to move in one direction, say clockwise. At first, a strategy yielding $L = \max_{r \in [k]} r \cdot v_r$ where $v_1 \geq v_2 \geq \dots \geq v_k$ was conjectured to be optimal by Czyzowicz et al. This was proven not to be the case by giving constructions for only specific numbers of agents with marginal improvements of $L$. We give a general construction that yields $L = \frac{1}{33 \log_e\log_2(k)} \sum_{i=1}^k v_i$ for any set of agents, which in particular for the case $1, 1/2, \dots, 1/k$ diverges as $k \rightarrow \infty$, thus resolving a conjecture by Kawamura and Soejima affirmatively.

On the combinatorics of last passage percolation in a quarter square and $\mathrm{GOE}^2$ fluctuations
In this note we give a(nother) combinatorial proof of an old result of Baik--Rains: that for appropriately considered independent geometric weights, the generating series for last passage percolation polymers in a $2n \times n \times n$ quarter square (point-to-half-line-reflected geometry) splits as the product of two simpler generating series---that for last passage percolation polymers in a point-to-line geometry and that for last passage percolation in a point-to-point-reflected (half-space) geometry, the latter both in an $n \times n \times n$ triangle. As a corollary, for iid geometric random variables---of parameter $q$ off-diagonal and parameter $\sqrt{q}$ on the diagonal---we see that the last passage percolation time in said quarter square obeys Tracy--Widom $\mathrm{GOE}^2$ fluctuations in the large $n$ limit as both the point-to-line and the point-to-point-reflected geometries have known GOE fluctuations. This is a discrete analogue of a celebrated Baik--Rains theorem (the limit $q \to 0$) and more recently of results from Bisi's PhD thesis (the limit $q \to 1$).

Optimal lower bounds for multiple recurrence

Let $(X, \mathcal{B},μ,T)$ be an ergodic measure preserving system, $A \in \mathcal{B}$ and $ε>0$. We study the largeness of sets of the form \begin{equation*} \begin{split} S = \left\{ n\in\mathbb{N}\colonμ(A\cap T^{-f_1(n)}A\cap T^{-f_2(n)}A\cap\ldots\cap T^{-f_k(n)}A)> μ(A)^{k+1} - ε\right\} \end{split} \end{equation*} for various families $\{f_1,\dots,f_k\}$ of sequences $f_i\colon \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$. For $k \leq 3$ and $f_{i}(n)=i f(n)$, we show that $S$ has positive density if $f(n)=q(p_n)$ where $q \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ satisfies $q(1)$ or $q(-1) =0$ and $p_n$ denotes the $n$-th prime; or when $f$ is a certain Hardy field sequence. If $T^q$ is ergodic for some $q \in \mathbb{N}$, then for all $r \in \mathbb{Z}$, $S$ is syndetic if $f(n) = qn + r$. For $f_{i}(n)=a_{i}n$, where $a_{i}$ are distinct integers, we show that $S$ can be empty for $k\geq 4$, and for $k = 3$ we found an interesting relation between the largeness of $S$ and the abundance of solutions to certain linear equations in sparse sets of integers. We also provide some partial results when the $f_{i}$ are distinct polynomials.

Non-intersecting Ryser hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A famous conjecture of Ryser states that every $r$-partite hypergraph has vertex cover number at most $r - 1$ times the matching number. In recent years, hypergraphs meeting this conjectured bound, known as $r$-Ryser hypergraphs, have been studied extensively. It was recently proved by Haxell, Narins and Szabó that all $3$-Ryser hypergraphs with matching number $ν> 1$ are essentially obtained by taking $ν$ disjoint copies of intersecting $3$-Ryser hypergraphs. Abu-Khazneh showed that such a characterisation is false for $r = 4$ by giving a computer generated example of a $4$-Ryser hypergraph with $ν= 2$ whose vertex set cannot be partitioned into two sets such that we have an intersecting $4$-Ryser hypergraph on each of these parts. Here we construct new infinite families of $r$-Ryser hypergraphs, for any given matching number $ν> 1$, that do not contain two vertex disjoint intersecting $r$-Ryser subhypergraphs.

Categories of Two-Colored Pair Partitions, Part I: Categories Indexed by Cyclic Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify certain categories of partitions of finite sets subject to specific rules on the colorization of points and the sizes of blocks. More precisely, we consider pair partitions such that each block contains exactly one white and one black point when rotated to one line; however crossings are allowed. There are two families of such categories, the first of which is indexed by cyclic groups and is covered in the present article; the second family will be the content of a follow-up article. Via a Tannaka-Krein result, the categories in the two families correspond to easy quantum groups interpolating the classical unitary group and Wang's free unitary quantum group. In fact, they are all half-liberated in some sense and our results imply that there are many more half-liberation procedures than previously expected. However, we focus on a purely combinatorial approach leaving quantum group aspects aside.
Finding cliques using few probes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider algorithms with unbounded computation time that probe the entries of the adjacency matrix of an $n$ vertex graph, and need to output a clique. We show that if the input graph is drawn at random from $G_{n,\frac{1}{2}}$ (and hence is likely to have a clique of size roughly $2\log n$), then for every $δ< 2$ and constant $\ell$, there is an $α< 2$ (that may depend on $δ$ and $\ell$) such that no algorithm that makes $n^δ$ probes in $\ell$ rounds is likely (over the choice of the random graph) to output a clique of size larger than $α\log n$.

Infinite classes of strongly regular graphs derived from $GL(n,F_2)$
It is known that the automorphism group of the elementary abelian $2$-group $Z_2^n$ is isomorphic to the general linear group $GL(n,F_2)$ of degree $n$ over $F_2$. Let $W$ be the collection of permutation matrices of order $n$. It is clear that $W\le GL(n,F_2)$. In virtue of this, we consider the Cayley graph $Cay(Z_2^n,S)$, where $S$ is the union of some orbits under the action of $W$. We call such graphs the orbit Cayley graphs over $Z_2^n$. In this paper, we give eight infinite families of strongly regular graphs among orbit Cayley graphs over $Z_2^n$, in which six families are new as we know. By the way, we formulate the spectra of orbit Cayley graphs as well.
