Proofs and reductions of various conjectured partition identities of Kanade and Russell
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove seven of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities modulo $12$ that were conjectured by Kanade and Russell. Included among these seven are the two original modulo $12$ identities, in which the products have asymmetric congruence conditions, as well as the three symmetric identities related to the principally specialized characters of certain level $2$ modules of $A_9^{(2)}$. We also give reductions of four other conjectures in terms of single-sum basic hypergeometric series.

Hamiltonicity in Convex Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a connected graph, the Hamiltonian cycle (path) is a simple cycle (path) that spans all the vertices in the graph. It is known from \cite{muller,garey} that HAMILTONIAN CYCLE (PATH) are NP-complete in general graphs and chordal bipartite graphs. A convex bipartite graph $G$ with bipartition $(X,Y)$ and an ordering $X=(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$, is a bipartite graph such that for each $y \in Y$, the neighborhood of $y$ in $X$ appears consecutively. $G$ is said to have convexity with respect to $X$. Further, convex bipartite graphs are a subclass of chordal bipartite graphs. In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a Hamiltonian cycle in convex bipartite graphs and further we obtain a linear-time algorithm for this graph class. We also show that Chvatal's necessary condition is sufficient for convex bipartite graphs. The closely related problem is HAMILTONIAN PATH whose complexity is open in convex bipartite graphs. We classify the class of convex bipartite graphs as {\em monotone} and {\em non-monotone} graphs. For monotone convex bipartite graphs, we present a linear-time algorithm to output a Hamiltonian path. We believe that these results can be used to obtain algorithms for Hamiltonian path problem in non-monotone convex bipartite graphs. It is important to highlight (a) in \cite{keil,esha}, it is incorrectly claimed that Hamiltonian path problem in convex bipartite graphs is polynomial-time solvable by referring to \cite{muller} which actually discusses Hamiltonian cycle (b) the algorithm appeared in \cite{esha} for the longest path problem (Hamiltonian path problem) in biconvex and convex bipartite graphs have an error and it does not compute an optimum solution always. We present an infinite set of counterexamples in support of our claim.

Limit shape of minimal difference partitions and fractional statistics
Published in Communications in Mathematical Physics (2019). https://doi.org/10.1007/s00220-019-03513-5 • View Publication • BIB
The class of minimal difference partitions MDP($q$) (with gap $q$) is defined by the condition that successive parts in an integer partition differ from one another by at least $q\ge 0$. In a recent series of papers by A. Comtet and collaborators, the MDP($q$) ensemble with uniform measure was interpreted as a combinatorial model for quantum systems with fractional statistics, that is, interpolating between the classic Bose-Einstein ($q=0$) and Fermi-Dirac ($q=1$) cases. This was done by formally allowing values $q \in (0,1)$ using an analytic continuation of the limit shape of the corresponding Young diagrams calculated for integer $q$. To justify this "replica-trick", we introduce a more general model based on a variable MDP-type condition encoded by an integer sequence $(q_i)$, whereby the (limiting) gap $q$ is naturally interpreted as the Cesàro mean of $(q_i)$. In this model, we find the family of limit shapes parameterized by $q \in [0,\infty)$ confirming the earlier answer, and also obtain the asymptotics of the number of parts.

On the Reconstruction of Static and Dynamic Discrete Structures
Published in In: R. Ramlau and O. Scherzer (Eds.), The Radon Transform: The First 100 Years and Beyond, De Gruyter, (ISBN 978-3-11-056085-5), 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We study inverse problems of reconstructing static and dynamic discrete structures from tomographic data (with a special focus on the `classical' task of reconstructing finite point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$). The main emphasis is on recent mathematical developments and new applications, which emerge in scientific areas such as physics and materials science, but also in inner mathematical fields such as number theory, optimization, and imaging. Along with a concise introduction to the field of discrete tomography, we give pointers to related aspects of computerized tomography in order to contrast the worlds of continuous and discrete inverse problems.

Equitable Partition Theorem of Tensors and Spectrum of Generalized Power Hypergraphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 555(2018) 21-38 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we present an equitable partition theorem of tensors, which gives the relations between $H$-eigenvalues of a tensor and its quotient equitable tensor and extends the equitable partitions of graphs to hypergraphs. Furthermore, with the aid of it, some properties and $H$-eigenvalues of the generalized power hypergraphs are obtained, which extends some known results, including some results of Yuan, Qi and Shao.

Unicyclic signed graphs with maximal energy
Let $x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n$ be the eigenvalues of a signed graph $Γ$ of order $n$. The energy of $Γ$ is defined as $E(Γ)=\sum^{n}_{j=1}|x_j|.$ Let $\mathcal{P}_n^4$ be obtained by connecting a vertex of the negative circle $(C_4,{\overlineσ})$ with a terminal vertex of the path $P_{n-4}$. In this paper, we show that for $n=4,6$ and $n \geq 8,$ $\mathcal{P}_n^4$ has the maximal energy among all connected unicyclic $n$-vertex signed graphs, except the cycles $C_5^+, C_7^+.$

Binary Proportional Pairing Functions
A pairing function for the non-negative integers is said to be binary perfect if the binary representation of the output is of length 2k or less whenever each input has length k or less. Pairing functions with square shells, such as the Rosenberg-Strong pairing function, are binary perfect. Many well-known discrete space-filling curves, including the discrete Hilbert curve, are also binary perfect. The concept of a binary proportional pairing function generalizes the concept of a binary perfect pairing function. Binary proportional pairing functions may be useful in applications where a pairing function is used, and where the function's inputs have lengths differing by a fixed proportion. In this article, a general technique for constructing a pairing function from any non-decreasing unbounded function is described. This technique is used to construct a binary proportional pairing function and its inverse.

Low-degree planar polynomials over finite fields of characteristic two
Published • View Publication • BIB
Planar functions are mappings from a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ to itself with an extremal differential property. Such functions give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. There is a subtle difference between the definitions of these functions depending on the parity of $q$ and we consider the case that $q$ is even. We classify polynomials of degree at most $q^{1/4}$ that induce planar functions on $\mathbb{F}_q$, by showing that such polynomials are precisely those in which the degree of every monomial is a power of two. As a corollary we obtain a complete classification of exceptional planar polynomials, namely polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q$ that induce planar functions on infinitely many extensions of~$\mathbb{F}_q$. The proof strategy is to study the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points of an algebraic curve attached to a putative planar function.~Our methods also give a simple proof of a new partial result for the classification of almost perfect nonlinear~functions.

On the geometry of strongly flat semigroups and their generalizations
Our goal is to convince the readers that the theory of complex normal surface singularities can be a powerful tool in the study of numerical semigroups, and, in the same time, a very rich source of interesting affine and numerical semigroups. More precisely, we prove that the strongly flat semigroups, which satisfy the maximality property with respect to the Diophantine Frobenius problem, are exactly the numerical semigroups associated with negative definite Seifert homology spheres via the possible 'weights' of the generic $S^1$-orbit. Furthermore, we consider their generalization to the Seifert rational homology sphere case and prove an explicit (up to a Laufer computation sequence) formula for their Frobenius number. The singularities behind are the weighted homogeneous ones, whose several topological and analytical properties are exploited.

Hypergraph expanders of all uniformities from Cayley graphs
Published in Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 121(5): 1311--1336 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Hypergraph expanders are hypergraphs with surprising, non-intuitive expansion properties. In a recent paper, the first author gave a simple construction, which can be randomized, of $3$-uniform hypergraph expanders with polylogarithmic degree. We generalize this construction, giving a simple construction of $r$-uniform hypergraph expanders for all $r \geq 3$.
The Best-or-Worst and the Postdoc problems with random number of candidates
In this paper we consider two variants of the Secretary problem: The Best-or-Worst and the Postdoc problems. We extend previous work by considering that the number of objects is not known and follows either a discrete Uniform distribution $\mathcal{U}[1,n]$ or a Poisson distribution $\mathcal{P}(λ)$. We show that in any case the optimal strategy is a threshold strategy, we provide the optimal cutoff values and the asymptotic probabilities of success. We also put our results in relation with closely related work.

A Rainbow Dirac's Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A famous theorem of Dirac states that any graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n/2$ has a Hamilton cycle. Such graphs are called Dirac graphs. Strengthening this result, we show the existence of rainbow Hamilton cycles in $μn$-bounded colourings of Dirac graphs for sufficiently small $μ>0$.

The Double Star Sequences and the General Second Zagreb Index
Published in Matematychni Studii, Vol. 51, No.2, 2019, 115-123 • View Publication • BIB
For a simple graph we introduce notions of the double star sequence, the double star frequently sequence and prove that these sequences are inverses of each other. As a consequence, we express the general second Zagreb index in terms of the double star sequence. Also, we calculate the ordinary generating function and a linear recurrence relation for the sequence of the general second Zagreb indexes.
The Hrushovski property for hypertournaments and profinite topologies
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the problem of extending partial isomorphisms for hypertournaments, which are relational structures generalizing tournaments. This is a generalized version of an old question of Herwig and Lascar. We show that the generalized problem has a negative answer, and we provide a positive answer in a special case. As a corollary, we show that the extension property holds for tournaments in case the partial isomorphisms have pairwise disjoint ranges and pairwise disjoint domains.

A new lower bound on Hadwiger-Debrunner numbers in the plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family of sets $F$ is said to satisfy the $(p,q)$ property if among any $p$ sets in $F$, some $q$ have a non-empty intersection. Hadwiger and Debrunner (1957) conjectured that for any $p \geq q \geq d+1$ there exists $c=c_d(p,q)$, such that any family of compact convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that satisfies the $(p,q)$ property, can be pierced by at most $c$ points. In a celebrated result from 1992, Alon and Kleitman proved the conjecture. However, obtaining sharp bounds on $c_d(p,q)$, called `the Hadwiger-Debrunner numbers', is still a major open problem in discrete and computational geometry. The best currently known lower bound on the Hadwiger-Debrunner numbers in the plane is $c_2(p,q) = Ω( \frac{p}{q}\log(\frac{p}{q}))$ while the best known upper bound is $O(p^{(1.5+δ)(1+\frac{1}{q-2})})$. In this paper we improve the lower bound significantly by showing that $c_2(p,q) \geq p^{1+Ω(1/q)}$. Furthermore, the bound is obtained by a family of lines, and is tight for all families that have a bounded VC-dimension. Unlike previous bounds on the Hadwiger-Debrunner numbers which mainly used the weak epsilon-net theorem, our bound stems from a surprising connection of the $(p,q)$ problem to an old problem of Erdős on points in general position in the plane. We use a novel construction for the Erdős' problem, obtained recently by Balogh and Solymosi using the hypergraph container method, to get the lower bound on $c_2(p,3)$. We then generalize the bound to $c_2(p,q)$ for any $q \geq 3$.
Finitely forcible graphons with an almost arbitrary structure
Published in Version published by Discrete Analysis 2020:9 • View Publication • BIB
Graphons are analytic objects representing convergent sequences of large graphs. A graphon is said to be finitely forcible if it is determined by finitely many subgraph densities, i.e., if the asymptotic structure of graphs represented by such a graphon depends only on finitely many density constraints. Such graphons appear in various scenarios, particularly in extremal combinatorics. Lovasz and Szegedy conjectured that all finitely forcible graphons possess a simple structure. This was disproved in a strong sense by Cooper, Kral and Martins, who showed that any graphon is a subgraphon of a finitely forcible graphon. We strenghten this result by showing for every $\varepsilon>0$ that any graphon spans a $1-\varepsilon$ proportion of a finitely forcible graphon.

The extremal function for $K_9^=$ minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove the extremal function for $K_9^=$ minors, where $K_9^=$ denotes the complete graph $K_9$ with two edges removed. In particular, we show that any graph with $n$ vertices and at least $6n - 20$ edges either contains a $K_9^=$ minor or is isomorphic to a graph obtained from disjoint copies of $K_8$ and $K_{2, 2, 2, 2, 2}$ by identifying cliques of size 5. We utilize computer assistance to prove one of our lemmas.

Graphs with no $K_9^=$ minor are 10-colorable
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hadwiger's conjecture claims that any graph with no $K_t$ minor is $(t - 1)$-colorable. This has been proved for $t \le 6$, but remains open for $t \ge 7$. As a variant of this conjecture, graphs with no $K_t^=$ minor have been considered, where $K_t^=$ denotes the complete graph with two edges removed. It has been shown that graphs with no $K_t^=$ minor are $(2t - 8)$-colorable for $t \in \{7, 8\}$. In this paper, we extend this result to the case $t = 9$ and show that graphs with no $K_9^=$ minor are $10$-colorable.

A sharp threshold of propagation connectivity for mixed random hypergraphs
This paper studies the propagation connectivity of a random hypergraph $\mathbb{G}$ containing both 2-edges and 3-hyperedges. We find an exact threshold of the propagation connectivity of $\mathbb{G}$: If $I_{ε,r}<-1$, then $\mathbb{G}$ is not propagation connected with high probability; while if $I_{ε,r}>-1$, then $\mathbb{G}$ is propagation connected with high probability, where $I_{ε,r}$ is a constant dependent on the parameters of 2 and 3-edge probabilities.

Aspects of the topology and combinatorics of Higgs bundle moduli spaces
Published in SIGMA 14 (2018), 129, 18 pages • View Publication • BIB
This survey provides an introduction to basic questions and techniques surrounding the topology of the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface. Through examples, we demonstrate how the structure of the cohomology ring of the moduli space leads to interesting questions of a combinatorial nature.
