Equiangular lines, Incoherent sets and Quasi-symmetric designs
The absolute upper bound on the number of equiangular lines that can be found in $\mathbf{R}^d$ is $d(d+1)/2$. Examples of sets of lines that saturate this bound are only known to exist in dimensions $d=2,3,7$ or $23$. By considering the additional property of incoherence, we prove that there exists a set of equiangular lines that saturates the absolute bound and the incoherence bound if and only if $d=2,3,7$ or $23$. This allows us classify all tight spherical $5$-designs $X$ in $\mathbf{S}^{d-1}$, the unit sphere, with the property that there exists a set of $d$ points in $X$ whose pairwise inner products are positive. For a given angle $κ$, there exists a relative upper bound on the number of equiangular lines in $\mathbf{R}^d$ with common angle $κ$. We prove that classifying sets of lines that saturate this bound along with the incoherence bound is equivalent to classifying certain quasi-symmetric designs, which are combinatorial designs with two block intersection numbers. Given a further natural assumption, we classify the known sets of lines that saturate these two bounds. This family comprises of the lines mentioned above and the maximal set of $16$ equiangular lines found in $\mathbf{R}^6$. There are infinitely many known sets of lines that saturate the relative bound, so this result is surprising. To shed some light on this, we identify the $E_8$ lattice with the projection onto an $8$-dimensional subspace of a sublattice of the Leech lattice defined by $276$ equiangular lines in $\mathbf{R}^{23}$. This identification leads us to observe a correspondence between sets of equiangular lines in small dimensions and the exceptional curves of del Pezzo surfaces.

On the growth of the Möbius function of permutations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, vol. 169 (2020), 105121 • View Publication • BIB
We study the values of the Möbius function $μ$ of intervals in the containment poset of permutations. We construct a sequence of permutations $π_n$ of size $2n-2$ for which $μ(1,π_n)$ is given by a polynomial in $n$ of degree 7. This construction provides the fastest known growth of $|μ(1,π)|$ in terms of $|π|$, improving a previous quadratic bound by Smith. Our approach is based on a formula expressing the Möbius function of an arbitrary permutation interval $[α,β]$ in terms of the number of embeddings of the elements of the interval into $β$.

New constructions of Hadamard matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we obtain a number of new infinite families of Hadamard matrices. Our constructions are based on four new constructions of difference families with four or eight blocks. By applying the Wallis-Whiteman array or the Kharaghani array to the difference families constructed, we obtain new Hadamard matrices of order $4(uv+1)$ for $u=2$ and $v\in Φ_1\cup Φ_2 \cup Φ_3 \cup Φ_4$; and for $u\in \{3,5\}$ and $v\in Φ_1\cup Φ_2 \cup Φ_3$. Here, $Φ_1=\{q^2:q\equiv 1\pmod{4}\mbox{ is a prime power}\}$, $Φ_2=\{n^4\in \mathbb{N}:n\equiv 1\pmod{2}\} \cup \{9n^4\in \mathbb{N}:n\equiv 1\pmod{2}\}$, $Φ_3=\{5\}$ and $Φ_4=\{13,37\}$. Moreover, our construction also yields new Hadamard matrices of order $8(uv+1)$ for any $u\in Φ_1\cup Φ_2$ and $v\in Φ_1\cup Φ_2 \cup Φ_3$.
Sharp conditions for the existence of an even $[a,b]$-factor in a graph
Let $a$ and $b$ be positive integers. An even $[a,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for every vertex $v \in V(G)$, $d_H(v)$ is even and $a \le d_H(v) \le b$. Matsuda conjectured that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex 2-edge-connected graph such that $n \ge 2a+b+\frac{a^2-3a}b - 2$, $δ(G) \ge a$, and $σ_2(G) \ge \frac{2an}{a+b}$, then $G$ has an even $[a,b]$-factor. In this paper, we provide counterexamples, which are highly connected. Furthermore, we give sharp sufficient conditions for a graph to have an even $[a,b]$-factor. For even $an$, we conjecture a lower bound for $λ_1(G)$ in an $n$-vertex graph to have an $[a,b]$-factor, where $λ_1(G)$ is the largest eigenvalue of $G$.

The degrees, number of edges, spectral radius and weakly Hamilton-connectedness of bipartite graphs
A path of a graph $G$ is called a Hamilton path if it passes through all the vertices of $G$. A graph is Hamilton-connected if any two vertices are connected by a Hamilton path. Note that any bipartite graph is not Hamilton-connected. We consider the weak version of Hamilton-connected property among bipartite graphs. A weakly Hamilton-connected graph is a balanced bipartite graph $G=(X,Y,E)$ that there is a Hamilton path between any vertex $x\in X$ and $y\in Y$. In this paper, we present some degrees, number of edges, and spectral radius conditions for a simple balanced bipartite graph to be weakly Hamilton-connected.

Dushnik-Miller dimension of d-dimensional tilings with boxes
Planar graphs are the graphs with Dushnik-Miller dimension at most three (W. Schnyder, Planar graphs and poset dimension, Order 5, 323-343, 1989). Consider the intersection graph of interior disjoint axis parallel rectangles in the plane. It is known that if at most three rectangles intersect on a point, then this intersection graph is planar, that is it has Dushnik-Miller dimension at most three. This paper aims at generalizing this from the plane to $R^d$ by considering tilings of $R^d$ with axis parallel boxes, where at most $d+1$ boxes intersect on a point. Such tilings induce simplicial complexes and we will show that those simplicial complexes have Dushnik-Miller dimension at most $d+1$.

Not all partial cubes are $Θ$-graceful
It is shown that the graph obtained by merging two vertices of two 4-cycles is not a $Θ$-graceful partial cube, thus answering in the negative a question by Brešar and Klavžar from [1], who asked whether every partial cube is $Θ$-graceful.

Regularity, matchings and Cameron-Walker graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph and let $ν(G)$ be the matching number of $G$. It is well-known that $\reg I(G) \leqslant ν(G)+1$. In this paper we show that $\reg I(G) = ν(G)+1$ if and only if every connected component of $G$ is either a pentagon or a Cameron-Walker graph.

Fractional coloring of planar graphs of girth five
A graph G is (a:b)-colorable if there exists an assignment of b-element subsets of {1,...,a} to vertices of G such that sets assigned to adjacent vertices are disjoint. We first show that for every triangle-free planar graph G and a vertex x of G, the graph G has a set coloring phi by subsets of {1,...,6} such that |phi(v)|>=2 for each vertex v of G and |phi(x)|=3. As a corollary, every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices is (6n:2n+1)-colorable. We further use this result to prove that for every Delta, there exists a constant M_Delta such that every planar graph G of girth at least five and maximum degree Delta is (6M_Delta:2M_Delta+1)-colorable. Consequently, planar graphs of girth at least five with bounded maximum degree Delta have fractional chromatic number at most 3-3/(2M_Delta+1).

Reconfiguration of graphs with connectivity constraints
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ realizes the degree sequence $S$ if the degrees of its vertices is $S$. Hakimi gave a necessary and sufficient condition to guarantee that there exists a connected multigraph realizing $S$. Taylor later proved that any connected multigraph can be transformed into any other via a sequence of flips (maintaining connectivity at any step). A flip consists in replacing two edges $ab$ and $cd$ by the diagonals $ac$ and $bd$. In this paper, we study a generalization of this problem. A set of subsets of vertices $\mathcal{CC}$ is \emph{nested} if for every $C,C' \in \mathcal{CC}$ either $C \cap C' = \emptyset$ or one is included in the other. We are interested in multigraphs realizing a degree sequence $S$ and such that all the sets of a nested collection $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Such constraints naturally appear in tandem mass spectrometry. We show that it is possible to decide in polynomial if there exists a graph realizing $S$ where all the sets in $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Moreover, we prove that all such graphs can be obtained via a sequence of flips such that all the intermediate graphs also realize $S$ and where all the sets of $\mathcal{CC}$ induce connected subgraphs. Our proof is algorithmic and provides a polynomial time approximation algorithm on the shortest sequence of flips between two graphs whose ratio depends on the depth of the nested partition.

Spectrum of complex networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
The study of complex networks has been one of the most active fields in science in recent decades. Spectral properties of networks (or graphs that represent them) are of fundamental importance. Researchers have been investigating these properties for many years, and, based on numerical data, have raised a number of questions about the distribution of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. In this paper, we give the solution to some of these questions. In particular, we determine the limiting distribution of (the bulk of) the spectrum as the size of the network grows to infinity and show that the leading eigenvectors are strongly localized. We focus on the preferential attachment graph, which is the most popular mathematical model for growing complex networks. Our analysis is, on the other hand, general and can be applied to other models.

Packing colorings of subcubic outerplanar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$ and a nondecreasing sequence $S=(s_1,\ldots,s_k)$ of positive integers, the mapping $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is called an $S$-packing coloring of $G$ if for any two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $c^{-1}(i)$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is greater than $s_i$. The smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $(1,2,\ldots,k)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted $χ_ρ(G)$. The question of boundedness of the packing chromatic number in the class of subcubic (planar) graphs was investigated in several earlier papers; recently it was established that the invariant is unbounded in the class of all subcubic graphs. In this paper, we prove that the packing chromatic number of any 2-connected bipartite subcubic outerplanar graph is bounded by $7$. Furthermore, we prove that every subcubic triangle-free outerplanar graph has a $(1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring, and that there exists a subcubic outerplanar graph with a triangle that does not admit a $(1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring. In addition, there exists a subcubic triangle-free outerplanar graph that does not admit a $(1,2,2,3)$-packing coloring. A similar dichotomy is shown for bipartite outerplanar graphs: every such graph admits an $S$-packing coloring for $S=(1,3,\ldots,3)$, where $3$ appears $Δ$ times ($Δ$ being the maximum degree of vertices), and this property does not hold if one of the integers $3$ is replaced by $4$ in the sequence $S$.

On prime order automorphisms of generalized quadrangles
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study prime order automorphisms of generalized quadrangles. We show that, if $\mathcal{Q}$ is a thick generalized quadrangle of order $(s,t)$, where $s > t$ and $s+1$ is prime, and $\mathcal{Q}$ has an automorphism of order $s+1$, then \[ s \left\lceil \left\lceil \frac{t^2}{s+1}\right\rceil\left(\frac{s+1}{t} \right) \right\rceil \le t(s+t),\] with a similar inequality holding in the dual case when $t > s$, $t+1$ is prime, and $\mathcal{Q}$ is a thick generalized quadrangle of order $(s,t)$ with an automorphism of order $t+1$. In particular, if $s+1$ is prime and if there exists a natural number $n$ such that \[ \frac{t^2}{n+1} + t \le s + 1 < \frac{t^2}{n},\] then a thick generalized quadrangle $\mathcal{Q}$ cannot have an automorphism of order $s+1$, and hence the automorphism group of $\mathcal{Q}$ cannot be transitive on points. These results apply to numerous potential orders for which it is still unknown whether or not generalized quadrangles exist, showing that any examples would necessarily be somewhat asymmetric. Finally, we are able to use the theory we have built up about prime order automorphisms of generalized quadrangles to show that the automorphism group of a potential generalized quadrangle of order $(4,12)$ must necessarily be intransitive on both points and lines.

Towards the linear arboricity conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
The linear arboricity of a graph $G$, denoted by $\text{la}(G)$, is the minimum number of edge-disjoint linear forests (i.e. forests in which every connected component is a path) in $G$ whose union covers all the edges of $G$. A famous conjecture due to Akiyama, Exoo, and Harary from 1980 asserts that $\text{la}(G)\leq \lceil (Δ(G)+1)/2 \rceil$, where $Δ(G)$ denotes the maximum degree of $G$. This conjectured upper bound would be best possible, as is easily seen by taking $G$ to be a regular graph. In this paper, we show that for every graph $G$, $\text{la}(G)\leq \fracΔ{2}+O(Δ^{2/3-α})$ for some $α> 0$, thereby improving the previously best known bound due to Alon and Spencer from 1992. For graphs which are sufficiently good spectral expanders, we give even better bounds. Our proofs of these results further give probabilistic polynomial time algorithms for finding such decompositions into linear forests.

Singularity of random symmetric matrices -- a combinatorial approach to improved bounds
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, vol. 7, e22, 29 pages (2019) • View Publication • BIB
Let $M_n$ denote a random symmetric $n \times n$ matrix whose upper diagonal entries are independent and identically distributed Bernoulli random variables (which take values $1$ and $-1$ with probability $1/2$ each). It is widely conjectured that $M_n$ is singular with probability at most $(2+o(1))^{-n}$. On the other hand, the best known upper bound on the singularity probability of $M_n$, due to Vershynin (2011), is $2^{-n^c}$, for some unspecified small constant $c > 0$. This improves on a polynomial singularity bound due to Costello, Tao, and Vu (2005), and a bound of Nguyen (2011) showing that the singularity probability decays faster than any polynomial. In this paper, improving on all previous results, we show that the probability of singularity of $M_n$ is at most $2^{-n^{1/4}\sqrt{\log{n}}/1000}$ for all sufficiently large $n$. The proof utilizes and extends a novel combinatorial approach to discrete random matrix theory, which has been recently introduced by the authors together with Luh and Samotij.
Text-based Passwords Generated From Topological Graphic Passwords
Topological graphic passwords (Topsnut-gpws) are one of graph-type passwords, but differ from the existing graphical passwords, since Topsnut-gpws are saved in computer by algebraic matrices. We focus on the transformation between text-based passwords (TB-paws) and Topsnut-gpws in this article. Several methods for generating TB-paws from Topsnut-gpws are introduced; these methods are based on topological structures and graph coloring/labellings, such that authentications must have two steps: one is topological structure authentication, and another is text-based authentication. Four basic topological structure authentications are introduced and many text-based authentications follow Topsnut-gpws. Our methods are based on algebraic, number theory and graph theory, many of them can be transformed into polynomial algorithms. A new type of matrices for describing Topsnut-gpws is created here, and such matrices can produce TB-paws in complex forms and longer bytes. Estimating the space of TB-paws made by Topsnut-gpws is very important for application. We propose to encrypt dynamic networks and try to face: (1) thousands of nodes and links of dynamic networks; (2) large numbers of Topsnut-gpws generated by machines rather than human's hands. As a try, we apply spanning trees of dynamic networks and graphic groups (Topsnut-groups) to approximate the solutions of these two problems. We present some unknown problems in the end of the article for further research.

Domination Parameters of the Unitary Cayley Graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The unitary Cayley graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, denoted $X_n$, is the graph on $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$ where vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $\gcd(a-b,n) = 1$. We answer a question of Defant and Iyer by constructing a family of infinitely many integers $n$ such that $γ_t(X_n) \leq g(n) - 2$, where $γ_t$ denotes the total domination number and $g$ denotes the Jacobsthal function. We determine the irredundance number, domination number, and lower independence number of certain direct products of complete graphs and give bounds for these parameters for any direct product of complete graphs. We provide upper bounds on the size of irredundant sets in direct products of balanced, complete multipartite graphs which are asymptotically correct for the unitary Cayley graphs of integers with a bounded smallest prime factor.
Multi-Dimensional Spatially-Coupled Code Design Through Informed Relocation of Circulants
Published • View Publication • BIB
A circulant-based spatially-coupled (SC) code is constructed by partitioning the circulants of an underlying block code into a number of components, and then coupling copies of these components together. By connecting (coupling) several SC codes, multi-dimensional SC (MD-SC) codes are constructed. In this paper, we present a systematic framework for constructing MD-SC codes with notably better girth properties than their 1D-SC counterparts. In our framework, informed multi-dimensional coupling is performed via an optimal relocation and an (optional) power adjustment of problematic circulants in the constituent SC codes. Compared to the 1D-SC codes, our MD-SC codes are demonstrated to have up to 85% reduction in the population of the smallest cycle, and up to 3.8 orders of magnitude BER improvement in the early error floor region. The results of this work can be particularly beneficial in data storage systems, e.g., 2D magnetic recording and 3D Flash systems, as high-performance MD-SC codes are robust against various channel impairments and non-uniformity.

Mahler's method in several variables I: The theory of regular singular systems
This is the first part of a work devoted to the study of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence. We prove two main results concerning systems that are regular singular at the origin. Our interest in Mahler's method comes from the possible applications of these results to old problems involving automata theory and which concern the expansion of both natural numbers and real numbers in integer bases. In particular, problems which involve finite automata and base change. Such applications are studied in Part II of this work.

Mahler's method in several variables II: Applications to base change problems and finite automata
This is the second part of a work devoted to the study of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence. From the lifting theorem obtained in the first part, we first derive a general result, showing that Mahler functions in several variables, associated with transformations having multiplicatively dependent spectral radii, take algebraic independent values at algebraic points provided that these points are sufficiently independent. Then, we focus on applications of this result and of the two main results of Part I of this work. Our main application concerns problems about the representation of natural and real numbers in integer bases involving automata theory. These can be translated in terms of algebraic relations over $\overline{\mathbb Q}$ between values of Mahler functions in one variable. We also apply our results to the algebraic independence of Mahler functions and their specializations, and to the study of the values of Hecke-Mahler series.
