Eventual sign coherence
The sign coherence of $c$-vectors is one of the fundamental theorems of cluster algebras with principal coefficients. In 2019, Gekhtman and Nakanishi posed the asymptotic sign coherence conjecture for arbitrary cluster algebras of geometric type, which says sign coherence should eventually hold in any sufficiently generic infinite mutation sequence. We prove that their conjecture holds almost always for skew-symmetric cluster algebras of arbitrary rank. That is, we prove that with probability $1$, the sequence of $c$-vectors obtained by random mutation of an arbitrary quiver eventually becomes sign-coherent. Our results also establish the conjecture in full generality for many families of quivers by studying a new class of brog quivers.
Cluster scattering diagrams via quiver moduli and tight gradings
We study rank-2 cluster scattering diagrams through moduli spaces of quiver representations and a recently developed combinatorial framework of tight gradings. Combining quiver-theoretic and combinatorial methods, we prove and extend a collection of conjectures posed by Elgin--Reading--Stella concerning the structural and enumerative properties of the wall-function coefficients. The tight grading perspective also provides a new proof of the Weyl group symmetry of the scattering diagram.

Positivity of generalized cluster scattering diagrams
We introduce a new class of combinatorial objects, named tight gradings, which are certain nonnegative integer-valued functions on maximal Dyck paths. Using tight gradings, we derive a manifestly positive formula for any wall-function in a rank-2 generalized cluster scattering diagram. We further prove that any consistent rank-2 scattering diagram is positive with respect to the coefficients of initial wall-functions. Moreover, our formula yields explicit expressions for relative Gromov-Witten invariants on weighted projective planes and the Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of framed stable representations on complete bipartite quivers. Finally, by leveraging the rank-2 positivity, we show that any higher-rank generalized cluster scattering diagram has positive wall-functions, which leads to a proof of the positivity of the Laurent phenomenon and the strong positivity of Chekhov-Shapiro's generalized cluster algebras.

Scattering diagrams, tight gradings, and generalized positivity
In 2013, Lee, Li, and Zelevinsky introduced combinatorial objects called compatible pairs to construct the greedy bases for rank-2 cluster algebras, consisting of indecomposable positive elements including the cluster monomials. Subsequently, Rupel extended this construction to the setting of generalized rank-2 cluster algebras by defining compatible gradings. We discover a new class of combinatorial objects which we call tight gradings. Using this, we give a directly computable, manifestly positive, and elementary but highly nontrivial formula describing rank-2 consistent scattering diagrams. This allows us to show that the coefficients of the wall-functions on a generalized cluster scattering diagram of any rank are positive, which implies the Laurent positivity for generalized cluster algebras and the strong positivity of their theta bases.
Higher $q$-Continued Fractions
We introduce a $q$-analog of the higher continued fractions introduced by the last three authors in a previous work (together with Gregg Musiker), which are simultaneously a generalization of the $q$-rational numbers of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko. They are defined as ratios of generating functions for $P$-partitions on certain posets. We give matrix formulas for computing them, which generalize previous results in the $q=1$ case. We also show that certain properties enjoyed by the $q$-rationals are also satisfied by our higher versions.

Broken lines and compatible pairs for rank 2 quantum cluster algebras
There have been several combinatorial constructions of universally positive bases in cluster algebras, and these same combinatorial objects play a crucial role in the known proofs of the famous positivity conjecture for cluster algebras. The greedy basis was constructed in rank $2$ by Lee-Li-Zelevinsky using compatible pairs on Dyck paths. The theta basis, introduced by Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich, has elements expressed as a sum over broken lines on scattering diagrams. It was shown by Cheung-Gross-Muller-Musiker-Rupel-Stella-Williams that these bases coincide in rank $2$ via algebraic methods, and they posed the open problem of giving a combinatorial proof by constructing a (weighted) bijection between compatible pairs and broken lines. We construct a quantum-weighted bijection between compatible pairs and broken lines for the quantum type $A_2$ and the quantum Kronecker cluster algebras. By specializing the quantum parameter, this handles the problem of Cheung et al. for skew-symmetric cluster algebras of finite and affine type. For cluster monomials in skew-symmetric rank-$2$ cluster algebras, we construct a quantum-weighted bijection between positive compatible pairs (which comprise almost all compatible pairs) and broken lines of negative angular momentum.
Quasiperiods of Magic Labeling Quasipolynomials
A magic labeling of a graph is a labeling of the edges by nonnegative integers such that the label sum over the edges incident to every vertex is the same. This common label sum is known as the index. We count magic labelings by maximum edge label, rather than index, using an Ehrhart-theoretic approach. In contrast to Stanley's 1973 work showing that the function counting magic labelings with bounded index is a quasipolynomial with quasiperiod $2$, we show by construction that the minimum quasiperiod of the quasipolynomial counting magic labelings with bounded maximum label can be arbitrarily large, even for planar bipartite graphs. Unfortunately, this rules out a certain Ehrhart-theoretic approach to proving Hartsfield and Ringel's Antimagic Graph Conjecture. However, we show that this quasipolynomial is in fact a polynomial for any bipartite graph with matching preclusion number at most $1$, which includes any bipartite graph with a leaf.

On Faces and Hilbert Bases of Kostka Cones
Kostka coefficients appear in the representation theory of the general linear group and enumerate semistandard Young tableaux of fixed shape and content. The $r$-Kostka cone is the real polyhedral cone generated by pairs of partitions with at most $r$ parts, written as non-increasing $r$-tuples, such that the corresponding Kostka coefficient is nonzero. We provide several results showing that its faces have interesting structural and enumerative properties. We show that the $d$-faces of the $r$-Kostka cone can be determined from those of the $(3d+3)$-Kostka cone, allowing us to characterize its $2$-faces and enumerate its $d$-faces for $d \leq 4$. We provide tight asymptotics for the number of $d$-faces for arbitrary $d$ and determine the maximum number of extremal rays contained in a $d$-face for $d < r$. We then make progress towards a generalization of the Gao-Kiers-Orelowitz-Yong Width Bound on initial entries of partitions $(λ,μ)$ appearing in the Hilbert basis of the $λ_1$-Kostka cone. We show that at least $93.7\%$ of integer pairs $λ_1 \geq μ_1 > 0$ appear as the initial entries of partitions $(λ,μ)$ comprising a Hilbert basis element of the $r$-Kostka cone for every $r > λ_1$. We conclude with a conjecture about a curious $h$-vector phenomenon.
Realizable Standard Young Tableaux
Given two vectors $u$ and $v$, their outer sum is given by the matrix $A$ with entries $A_{ij} = u_{i} + v_{j}$. If the entries of $u$ and $v$ are increasing and sufficiently generic, the total ordering of the entries of the matrix is a standard Young tableau of rectangular shape. We call standard Young tableaux arising in this way realizable. The set of realizable tableaux was defined by Mallows and Vanderbei for studying a deconvolution algorithm, but we show they have appeared in many other contexts including sorting algorithms, quantum computing, random sorting networks, reflection arrangements, fiber polytopes, and Goodman and Pollack's theory of allowable sequences. In our work, we prove tight bounds on the asymptotic number of realizable rectangular tableaux. We also derive tight asymptotics for the number of realizable allowable sequences, which are in bijection with realizable staircase-shaped standard Young tableaux with the notion of realizability coming from the theory of sorting networks. As a consequence, we resolve an open question of Angel, Gorin, and Holroyd from 2012 and improve upon a 1986 result of Goodman and Pollack.

On Dyck Path Expansion Formulas for Rank 2 Cluster Variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we simplify and generalize formulas for the expansion of rank 2 cluster variables. In particular, we prove an equivalent, but simpler, description of the colored Dyck subpaths framework introduced by Lee and Schiffler. We then prove the conjectured bijectivity of a map constructed by Feiyang Lin between collections of colored Dyck subpaths and compatible pairs, objects introduced by Lee, Li, and Zelevinsky to study the greedy basis. We use this bijection along with Rupel's expansion formula for quantum greedy basis elements, which sums over compatible pairs, to provide a quantum generalization of Lee and Schiffler's colored Dyck subpaths formula.

Near Classification of Compact Hyperbolic Coxeter $d$-Polytopes with $d+4$ Facets and Related Dimension Bounds
Published • View PublicationBIB
We complete the classification of compact hyperbolic Coxeter $d$-polytopes with $d+4$ facets for $d=4$ and $5$. By previous work of Felikson and Tumarkin, the only remaining dimension where new polytopes may arise is $d=6$. We derive a new method for generating the combinatorial type of these polytopes via the classification of point set order types. In dimensions $4$ and $5$, there are $348$ and $51$ polytopes, respectively, yielding many new examples for further study. We furthermore provide new upper bounds on the dimension $d$ of compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytopes with $d+k$ facets for $k \leq 10$. It was shown by Vinberg in 1985 that for any $k$, we have $d \leq 29$, and no better bounds have previously been published for $k \geq 5$. As a consequence of our bounds, we prove that a compact hyperbolic Coxeter $29$-polytope has at least $40$ facets.

Unimodality and monotonic portions of certain domination polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a simple graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, a subset of vertices $U \subseteq V(G)$ is dominating if every vertex of $V(G)$ is either in $U$ or adjacent to a vertex of $U$. The domination polynomial of $G$ is the generating function whose coefficients are the number of dominating sets of a given size. We show that the domination polynomial is unimodal, i.e., the coefficients are non-decreasing and then non-increasing, for several well-known families of graphs. In particular, we prove unimodality for spider graphs with at most $400$ legs (of arbitrary length), lollipop graphs, arbitrary direct products of complete graphs, and Cartesian products of two complete graphs. We show that for every graph, a portion of the coefficients are non-increasing, where the size of the portion depends on the upper domination number, and in certain cases this is sufficient to prove unimodality. Furthermore, we study graphs with $m$ universal vertices, i.e., vertices adjacent to every other vertex, and show that the last $(\frac{1}{2} - \frac{1}{2^{m+1}}) n$ coefficients of their domination polynomial are non-increasing.

Tightness of Paired and Upper Domination Inequalities for Direct Product Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set $D$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is called dominating if every vertex of $G$ is either in $D$ or adjacent to a vertex of $D$. The paired domination number $γ_{\mathrm{pr}}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum size of a dominating set whose induced subgraph admits a perfect matching, and the upper domination number $Γ(G)$ is the maximum size of a minimal dominating set. In this paper, we investigate the sharpness of two multiplicative inequalities for these domination parameters, where the graph product is the direct product $\times$. We show that for every positive constant $c$, there exist graphs $G$ and $H$ of arbitrarily large diameter such that $γ_{\mathrm{pr}}(G \times H) \leq cγ_{\mathrm{pr}}(G)γ_{\mathrm{pr}}(H)$, thus answering a question of Rall as well as two questions of Paulraja and Sampath Kumar. We then study when this inequality holds with $c = \frac{1}{2}$, in particular proving that it holds whenever $G$ and $H$ are trees. Finally, we demonstrate that the inequality $Γ(G \times H) \geq Γ(G) Γ(H)$, due to Brešar, Klavžar, and Rall, is tight.

Sets Arising as Minimal Additive Complements in the Integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
A subset $C$ of an abelian group $G$ is a minimal additive complement to $W \subseteq G$ if $C + W = G$ and if $C' + W \neq G$ for any proper subset $C' \subset C$. In this paper, we study which sets of integers arise as minimal additive complements. We confirm a conjecture of Kwon, showing that bounded-below sets with arbitrarily large gaps arise as minimal additive complements. Moreover, our construction shows that any such set belongs to a co-minimal pair, strengthening a result of Biswas and Saha for lacunary sequences. We bound the upper and lower Banach density of syndetic sets that arise as minimal additive complements to finite sets. We provide some necessary conditions for an eventually periodic set to arise as a minimal additive complement and demonstrate that these necessary conditions are also sufficient for certain classes of eventually periodic sets. We conclude with several conjectures and questions concerning the structure of minimal additive complements.

Pattern-Avoiding Permutation Powers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Bóna and Smith defined strong pattern avoidance, saying that a permutation $π$ strongly avoids a pattern $τ$ if $π$ and $π^2$ both avoid $τ$. They conjectured that for every positive integer $k$, there is a permutation in $S_{k^3}$ that strongly avoids $123\cdots (k+1)$. We use the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence to settle this conjecture, showing that the number of such permutations is at least $k^{k^3/2+O(k^3/\log k)}$ and at most $k^{2k^3+O(k^3/\log k)}$. We enumerate $231$-avoiding permutations of order $3$, and we give two further enumerative results concerning strong pattern avoidance. We also consider permutations whose powers all avoid a pattern $τ$. Finally, we study subgroups of symmetric groups whose elements all avoid certain patterns. This leads to several new open problems connecting the group structures of symmetric groups with pattern avoidance.

Generalized Lyndon Factorizations of Infinite Words
A generalized lexicographic order on words is a lexicographic order where the total order of the alphabet depends on the position of the comparison. A generalized Lyndon word is a finite word which is strictly smallest among its class of rotations with respect to a generalized lexicographic order. This notion can be extended to infinite words: an infinite generalized Lyndon word is an infinite word which is strictly smallest among its class of suffixes. We prove a conjecture of Dolce, Restivo, and Reutenauer: every infinite word has a unique nonincreasing factorization into finite and infinite generalized Lyndon words. When this factorization has finitely many terms, we characterize the last term of the factorization. Our methods also show that the infinite generalized Lyndon words are precisely the words with infinitely many generalized Lyndon prefixes.

Domination Parameters of the Unitary Cayley Graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The unitary Cayley graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, denoted $X_n$, is the graph on $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$ where vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $\gcd(a-b,n) = 1$. We answer a question of Defant and Iyer by constructing a family of infinitely many integers $n$ such that $γ_t(X_n) \leq g(n) - 2$, where $γ_t$ denotes the total domination number and $g$ denotes the Jacobsthal function. We determine the irredundance number, domination number, and lower independence number of certain direct products of complete graphs and give bounds for these parameters for any direct product of complete graphs. We provide upper bounds on the size of irredundant sets in direct products of balanced, complete multipartite graphs which are asymptotically correct for the unitary Cayley graphs of integers with a bounded smallest prime factor.

$(k,λ)$-Anti-Powers and Other Patterns in Words
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 25:4 (2018) #P4.41 • View PublicationBIB
Given a word, we are interested in the structure of its contiguous subwords split into $k$ blocks of equal length, especially in the homogeneous and anti-homogeneous cases. We introduce the notion of $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns, words of the form $w = w_1\cdots w_k$ where, when $\{w_1,\dots,w_k\}$ is partitioned via equality, there are $μ_s$ sets of size $s$ for each $s \in \{1,\dots,k\}$. This is a generalization of the well-studied $k$-powers and the $k$-anti-powers recently introduced by Fici, Restivo, Silva, and Zamboni, as well as a refinement of the $(k,λ)$-anti-powers introduced by Defant. We generalize the anti-Ramsey-type results of Fici et al. to $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns and improve their bounds on $N_α(k,k)$, the minimum length such that every word of length $N_α(k,k)$ on an alphabet of size $α$ contains a $k$-power or $k$-anti-power. We also generalize their results on infinite words avoiding $k$-anti-powers to the case of $(k,λ)$-anti-powers. We provide a few results on the relation between $α$ and $N_α(k,k)$ and find the expected number of $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns in a word of length $n$.
