Dense free subgroups of automorphism groups of homogeneous partially ordered sets
Published in Forum Mathematicum, 31 (2019), 215-240 • View Publication • BIB
A countable poset is ultrahomogeneous if every isomorphism between its finite subposets can be extended to an automorphism. The groups $\operatorname{Aut}(A)$ of such posets $A$ have a natural topology in which $\operatorname{Aut}(A)$ are Polish topological groups. We consider the problem whether $\operatorname{Aut}(A)$ contains a dense free subgroup of two generators. We show that if $A$ is ultrahomogeneous, then $\operatorname{Aut}(A)$ contains such subgroup. Moreover, we characterize whose countable ultrahomogeneous posets $A$ such that for each natural $m$, the set of all cyclically dense elements $\bar{g}\in\operatorname{Aut}(A)^m$ for the diagonal action is comeager in $\operatorname{Aut}(A)^m$. In our considerations we strongly use the result of Schmerl which says that there are essentially four types of countably infinite ultrahomogeneous posets.

On the extremal Betti numbers of the binomial edge ideal of closed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the equality of the extremal Betti numbers of the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ and those of its initial ideal ${\rm in}(J_G)$ of a closed graph $G$. We prove that in some cases there is an unique extremal Betti number for ${\rm in}(J_G)$ and as a consequence there is an unique extremal Betti number for $J_G$ and these extremal Betti numbers are equal

Null Decomposition of Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $T$ be a tree, we show that the null space of the adjacency matrix of $T$ has relevant information about the structure of $T$. We introduce the Null Decomposition of trees, and use it in order to get formulas for independence number and matching number of a tree. We also prove that the number of maximum matchings in a tree is related to the null decomposition.
A Note on Upper Bounds for Some Generalized Folkman Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present some new constructive upper bounds based on product graphs for generalized vertex Folkman numbers. They lead to new upper bounds for some special cases of generalized edge Folkman numbers, including $F_e(K_3,K_4-e; K_5) \leq 27$ and $F_e(K_4-e,K_4-e; K_5) \leq 51$. The latter bound follows from a construction of a $K_5$-free graph on 51 vertices, for which every coloring of its edges with two colors contains a monochromatic $K_4-e$.

On A Conjecture Regarding Permutations Which Destroy Arithmetic Progressions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hegarty conjectured for $n\neq 2, 3, 5, 7$ that $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ has a permutation which destroys all arithmetic progressions mod $n$. For $n\ge n_0$, Hegarty and Martinsson demonstrated that $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ has an arithmetic-progression destroying permutation. However $n_0\approx 1.4\times 10^{14}$ and thus resolving the conjecture in full remained out of reach of any computational techniques. However, this paper using constructions modeled after those used by Elkies and Swaminathan for the case of $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ with $p$ being prime, establish the conjecture in full. Furthermore our results do not rely on the fact that it suffices to study when $n<n_0$ and thus our results completely independent of the proof given by Hegarty and Martinsson.

Some new sufficient conditions for $2p$-Hamilton-biconnectedness of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A balanced bipartite graph $G$ is said to be $2p$-Hamilton-biconnected if for any balanced subset $W$ of size $2p$ of $V(G)$, the subgraph induced by $V(G)\backslash W$ is Hamilton-biconnected. In this paper, we prove that "Let $p\geq0$ and $G$ be a balanced bipartite graph of order $2n$ with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq k$, where $n\geq 2k-p+2$ and $k\geq p$. If the number of edges $ e(G)>n(n-k+p-1)+(k+2)(k-p+1), $ then $G$ is $2p$-Hamilton-biconnected except some exceptions." Furthermore, this result is used to present two new spectral conditions for a graph to $2p$-Hamilton-biconnected. Moreover, the similar results are also presented for nearly balanced bipartite graphs.

Locating any two vertices on Hamiltonian cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we give a proof of Enomoto's conjecture for graphs of sufficiently large order. Enomoto's conjecture states that, if $G$ is a graph of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq \frac{n}{2}+1$, then for any pair of vertices $x$, $y$ in $G$, there is a Hamiltonian cycle $C$ of $G$ such that $d_C(x,y)=\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor$. The main tools of our proof are Regularity Lemma of Szemerédi and Blow-up Lemma of Komlós et al.

Exhaustive search of convex pentagons which tile the plane
We present an exhaustive search of all families of convex pentagons which tile the plane. This research shows that there are no more than the already 15 known families. In particular, this implies that there is no convex polygon which allows only non-periodic tilings.
On the density of sets avoiding parallelohedron distance 1
Published • View Publication • BIB
The maximal density of a measurable subset of R^n avoiding Euclidean distance1 is unknown except in the trivial case of dimension 1. In this paper, we consider thecase of a distance associated to a polytope that tiles space, where it is likely that the setsavoiding distance 1 are of maximal density 2^-n, as conjectured by Bachoc and Robins. We prove that this is true for n = 2, and for the Voronoï regions of the lattices An, n >= 2.
A tanglegram Kuratowski theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A tanglegram consists of two rooted binary plane trees with the same number of leaves and a perfect matching between the two leaf sets. Tanglegrams are drawn with the leaves on two parallel lines, the trees on either side of the strip created by these lines, and the perfect matching inside the strip. If this can be done without any edges crossing, a tanglegram is called planar. We show that every non-planar tanglegram contains one of two non-planar 4-leaf tanglegrams as induced subtanglegram, which parallels Kuratowski's Theorem.

Exceptional Scattered Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $f$ be an $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear function over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$. If the $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U= \{ (x^{q^t}, f(x)) : x\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n} \}$ defines a maximum scattered linear set, then we call $f$ a scattered polynomial of index $t$. As these polynomials appear to be very rare, it is natural to look for some classification of them. We say a function $f$ is an exceptional scattered polynomial of index $t$ if the subspace $U$ associated with $f$ defines a maximum scattered linear set in $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^{mn})$ for infinitely many $m$. Our main results are the complete classifications of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $0$ (for $q>5$) and of index $1$. The strategy applied here is to convert the original question into a special type of algebraic curves and then to use the intersection theory and the Hasse-Weil theorem to derive contradictions.

On the $E$-polynomial of parabolic $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-character varieties
We find the $E$-polynomials of a family of parabolic $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-character varieties $\mathcal{M}^ξ_{n}$ of Riemann surfaces by constructing a stratification, proving that each stratum has polynomial count, applying a result of Katz regarding the counting functions, and finally adding up the resulting $E$-polynomials of the strata. To count the number of $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-points of the strata, we invoke a formula due to Frobenius. Our calculation make use of a formula for the evaluation of characters on semisimple elements coming from Deligne-Lusztig theory, applied to the character theory of $\mathrm{Sp}{\left(2n,\mathbb{F}_{q}\right)}$, and Möbius inversion on the poset of set-partitions. We compute the Euler characteristic of the $\mathcal{M}^ξ_{n}$ with these polynomials, and show they are connected.

Self-avoiding walk on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with Yang-Baxter weights: universality of critical fugacity and 2-point function
Published in Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. 56(4): 2281-2300 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We consider a self-avoiding walk model (SAW) on the faces of the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. This walk can traverse the same face twice, but crosses any edge at most once. The weight of a walk is a product of local weights: each square visited by the walk yields a weight that depends on the way the walk passes through it. The local weights are parametrised by angles $θ\in[\fracπ{3},\frac{2π}{3}]$ and satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation. The self-avoiding walk is embedded in the plane by replacing the square faces of the grid with rhombi with corresponding angles. By means of the Yang-Baxter transformation, we show that the 2-point function of the walk in the half-plane does not depend on the rhombic tiling (i.e. on the angles chosen). In particular, this statistic coincides with that of the self-avoiding walk on the hexagonal lattice. Indeed, the latter can be obtained by choosing all angles $θ$ equal to $\fracπ{3}$. For the hexagonal lattice, the critical fugacity of SAW was recently proved to be equal to $1+\sqrt{2}$. We show that the same is true for any choice of angles. In doing so, we also give a new short proof to the fact that the partition function of self-avoiding bridges in a strip of the hexagonal lattice tends to 0 as the width of the strip tends to infinity. This proof also yields a quantitative bound on the convergence.

Classification of lattice polytopes with small volumes
Published in Journal of Combinatorics 11 (2020), 495--509 • View Publication • BIB
In the frame of a classification of general square systems of polynomial equations solvable by radicals, Esterov and Gusev succeeded in classifying all spanning lattice polytopes whose normalized volumes are at most $4$. In the present paper, we complete to classify all lattice polytopes whose normalized volumes are at most $4$ based on the known classification of their $δ$-polynomials.
Domination and fractional domination in digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we investigate the relation between the (fractional) domination number of a digraph $G$ and the independence number of its underlying graph, denoted by $α(G)$. More precisely, we prove that every digraph $G$ has fractional domination number at most $2α(G)$, and every directed triangle-free digraph $G$ has domination number at most $α(G)\cdot α(G)!$. The first bound is sharp.

Nonbipartite Dulmage-Mendelsohn Decomposition for Berge Duality
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Dulmage-Mendelsohn decomposition is a classical canonical decomposition in matching theory applicable for bipartite graphs, and is famous not only for its application in the field of matrix computation, but also for providing a prototypal structure in matroidal optimization theory. The Dulmage-Mendelsohn decomposition is stated and proved using the two color classes, and therefore generalizing this decomposition for nonbipartite graphs has been a difficult task. In this paper, we obtain a new canonical decomposition that is a generalization of the Dulmage-Mendelsohn decomposition for arbitrary graphs, using a recently introduced tool in matching theory, the basilica decomposition. Our result enables us to understand all known canonical decompositions in a unified way. Furthermore, we apply our result to derive a new theorem regarding barriers. The duality theorem for the maximum matching problem is the celebrated Berge formula, in which dual optimizers are known as barriers. Several results regarding maximal barriers have been derived by known canonical decompositions, however no characterization has been known for general graphs. In this paper, we provide a characterization of the family of maximal barriers in general graphs, in which the known results are developed and unified.
From Dyck paths to standard Young tableaux
Published in Ann. Comb. 24 (2020), no. 1, 69-93 • View Publication • BIB
We present nine bijections between classes of Dyck paths and classes of standard Young tableaux (SYT). In particular, we consider SYT of flag and rectangular shapes, we give Dyck path descriptions for certain SYT of height at most 3, and we introduce a special class of labeled Dyck paths of semilength $n$ that is shown to be in bijection with the set of all SYT with $n$ boxes. In addition, we present bijections from certain classes of Motzkin paths to SYT. As a natural framework for some of our bijections, we introduce a class of set partitions which in some sense is dual to the known class of noncrossing partitions.
Minimal Sum Labeling of Graphs
A graph $G$ is called a sum graph if there is a so-called sum labeling of $G$, i.e. an injective function $\ell: V(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ such that for every $u,v\in V(G)$ it holds that $uv\in E(G)$ if and only if there exists a vertex $w\in V(G)$ such that $\ell(u)+\ell(v) = \ell(w)$. We say that sum labeling $\ell$ is minimal if there is a vertex $u\in V(G)$ such that $\ell(u)=1$. In this paper, we show that if we relax the conditions (either allow non-injective labelings or consider graphs with loops) then there are sum graphs without a minimal labeling, which partially answers the question posed by Miller, Ryan and Smyth in 1998.

The Undirected Optical Indices of Complete $m$-ary Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
The routing and wavelength assignment problem arises from the investigation of optimal wavelength allocation in an optical network that employs Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). Consider an optical network that is represented by a connected, simple graph $G$. An all-to-all routing $R$ in $G$ is a set of paths connecting all pairs of vertices of $G$. The undirected optical index of $G$ is the minimum integer $k$ to guarantee the existence of a mapping $φ:R\to\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$, such that $φ(P)\neqφ(P')$ if $P$ and $P'$ have common edge(s), over all possible routings $R$. A natural lower bound of the undirected optical index of $G$ is the (undirected) edge-forwarding index, which is defined to be the minimum of the maximum edge-load over all possible all-to-all routings. In this paper, we first derive the exact value of the optical index of the complete $m$-ary trees, and then investigate the gap between undirected optical and edge-forwarding indices.

Complexities of Erez self-dual normal bases
The complexities of self-dual normal bases, which are candidates for the lowest complexity basis of some defined extensions, are determined with the help of the number of all but the simple points in well chosen minimal Besicovitch arrangements. In this article, these values are first compared with the expected value of the number of all but the simple points in a minimal randomly selected Besicovitch arrangement in F d 2 for the first 370 prime numbers d. Then, particular minimal Besicovitch arrangements which share several geometrical properties with the arrangements considered to determine the complexity will be considered in two distinct cases.
